This cd has many things working in its favor. Nothing here is overstated, the instrumentation and vocals blend together through 14 tracks fully complementing each other.

I get a feel of Appalachian spaciousness in Drunk's use of accordian, harmonica, violin, cello, guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, drums, bells, and magnus organ(?).

The vocals are never overbearing when revealing these mostly "sad" moody stories...by "sad" I mean the kind of sadness you hear in even those most jaunting Traditional Folk ballads...where a winter follows spring somewheres down the road; or a newborn baby's cribroom festooned with daisies, clouds and cherubs, rather than the ravens, wolves, and dark hollers that lurk outside in the "real" world.

However there always seems to be a sense of "rural hopefulness" in this music, and throughout 'a derby spiritual' you'll be pleasantly surprised by an improptu chorus popping up now and then...giving even the sadder tunes a heavenly (pop) sheen.

This is a very rewarding cd for me, and certainly worth a listen by fans of acoustic folk, Americana and Appalachian music.
