Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another winner from Naxos.......2007-02-21

This is another winning compilation from Naxos. My only comment is to provide a heads-up regarding the track list in the booklet. CD 1 puts the Leonin "Viderunt Omnes" on six tracks, while the booklet leaves room for only one. Thus, add five to booklet tracks five through 21 for CD1 to get them to match. (I.e., where the booklet says tracks 15 and 16 are two versions of Josquin's "El Grillo," your CD player will show them to be tracks 20 and 21.) With luck this will be corrected in later printings.

Also, I would have liked the booklet to include the words, but perhaps that is an inducement to get particular CDs from Naxos.

As for the music itself--breadth of selection, musicianship, sound quality, all are excellent. A great collection!

5 out of 5 stars awesome value -- 5+ stars.......2006-07-15

I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.

The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries.

But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about early music, and I've spent a few dozen dollars buying books. If the booklet were separated from the CDs, it alone would be worth more than $10.

In short, if you're interested in exploring early music, this really is one of the best places to start; the best place that I know of. I'm sure, at any rate, that you can't beat the value.

Nothing says "surf's up" or "convertible tops down" like a Pernice Brothers record that hits the streets in early summer, and no one can breath breezy, sun-splashed melodies into three-minute fits of aggravation and despair quite like songwriting maestro Joe Pernice. On this fifth album (and as he with his previous band, the The Scud Mountain Boys), Pernice masks his sardonic report on a hypocritical, fearful, dumbed-down world with hooks and choruses you'll remember after three listens. Whether he's poeticizing about Gotham City ("Say Goodnight to the Lady"), overdosing on Chet Baker ("There Goes the Sun") or dreaming of a better life with browbeaten urgency ("Amazing Glow"), Pernice dresses up his dreams in music that will make your smile. And when he ruminates in "Saddest Quo" about train wrecks, plane crashes and the suffocation from tabloid TV ("It's a sad status quotient/Waiting for the sky to fall"), you can sing along, but you can't help but feel Pernice "choking on a blind faith far from broken." Brilliant stuff. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pernice Brothers - Where have you been all my life?.......2007-06-15

I am very impressed with the Pernice Brothers - their music is layered and their lyrics are intelligent and pleasant. Their albums are some of the few in which 9 out of 10 songs are great. I'd put them up there with the magnificent Belle & Sebastian, Beck, Kings of Convenience - the highest compliment I can offer! Their music makes for lush background tunes as well as nice music to sit and contemplate. Why aren't these guys very, very famous? Is it the name?

3 out of 5 stars better than the last..........2007-02-25

While I like many of the Pernice Brothers' songs, I think Joe Pernice likes to listen to himself sing a bit too much. He often tends to regurgitate the same basic melodies and vocal voicings, which is too bad, because a lot of the songs could be so much better. That said, he does take a little bit of a side road on many of the "Discover..." songs. I especially like the first three numbers, the title track, "Amazing Glow" and "Red Desert". The drum machine is a real negative here, though.

4 out of 5 stars Back in the saddle.......2005-12-08

I, for one, was not a fan of Y,M&O...I felt that Joe's songwriting muse had failed him for that one. Too studiedly literate song lyrics that sounded like an overcaffeinated grad student trying overly hard to impress his advisor...the melodies, too, were too overwrought, crossing the line from melodic into syrup-y.

But here, Joe gets his mojo back quite a bit. He's reined the lyrics and melodies in, to the point where they're merely catchy, not gloopy...

Oddly enough though, I think my favorite track is the instrumental...go figure.

Having said all the above, this still ranks behind their best "Overcome by happiness" and "World without end" (numbers 1 and 2, in terms of quality for me, respectively).

4 out of 5 stars A Lovelier You, Indeed!.......2005-08-24

With their 4th studio release "Discover A Lovelier You" [13 tracks/39 min], The Pernice Brothers deliver yet another batch of songs full of melodic charms.

Amoung the highlights are the catchy opener "There Goes The Sun"(an obvious choice for a single), "My So Called Celibate Life", "Amazing Glow", and the almost Iron And Wine sounding "Pisshole In The Snow".

Another interesting song is the album's title track, an instrumental (which they are not known for), that might be one of the more memorable recent pop instrumentals I've heard.

One criticism (a minor one) is that there are no lyrics incluced, and not much as far as liner notes go, just a brief listing of personnel. The artwork is good, as usual.

All in all, this is likely to please most fans of the Pernice Brothers previous work. If you are a curious fan, and are looking for a good entry point into their catalog, you can't go wrong here.

Highly Recommended!

2 out of 5 stars They Mailed This One In.......2005-08-14

Located right in the heart of this CD are two songs that epitomize the problem. They are the the throwaway song snippet "Dumb It Down" and the very dispensable instrumental "Discover A Lovelier You". The rest of the CD more or less follows a similar pattern of presenting some interesting ideas that are not fleshed-out into real songs. There are actually only three songs here that measure up to the Pernice Brothers' songwriting of their previous releases. Two of them, "Saddest Quo" and "Snow" as well as the passable lead track "There Goes The Sun" appearing as the first three cuts had me enthused that this was another stellar release. However, my disappointment quickly set in with "Sell Your Hair" which sounds like a Simon and Garfunkel B-Side and the ponderous "My So Called Celibate Life". After what I would rate as three great five-star studio releases, this one is really disappointing.

excellent overview of contemporaneous classic music.

Should be continued, plenty more 20th-century composers to be discovered.

5 out of 5 stars For the price you can't lose.......2007-02-21

This 2 cd set consists of, as the title indicates, various 20c pieces or movements from the Naxos catalog. Sound quality is uniformly high, although for some such as Stockhausen's it's not clear if that's good or bad. What is excellent is the variety of the collection--some familiar (Debussy), others not, some pretty, others intentionally weird. Few will find every piece to his or her taste, but many listeners who do not spend much time on 20c music will find something to like. Overall, a great introduction to a period of much off-putting, yes, but also much compelling music.

5 out of 5 stars RBBS...what more can I say?.......2005-03-07

Just saw the man last night live and WOW! Not only is he a great performer with a voice that tells many tales of lost love and lessons learned, but the man is quite a character. Funny, honest, and most of all HUMAN. I've been wanting to see him perform live and finally got the chance last night. I've been listening to his music since "Time to Discover" came out. His blend of the blues, R&B, soul and rock makes for a night of good music. His band was simply the best too.

Buy all of Robert Bradley's releases and listen...really listen. He is awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, it is time.......2004-11-03

This album not only features Detroit's own Kid Rock it contains Pride and Love for the city. With 6 discs in my cd player, this one was getting the most air time. I listen to a very ecclectic array of music and enjoy opening others to new music. Time to Discover is among a favorite of everyone. This is a must for any self-proclaimed music afficienado. I have seen them perform many of these songs with Kid and I may say I am better for it. Get this album. The first one is very good too.

5 out of 5 stars incredible.......2003-02-22

listen and listen well. I have found quite possibly the single best artist of the 21st century. Robert Bradley is a blind southerner who sings the raspy blues of women, life, and love. I ran across his song "Baby" on a live compilation CD of a bunch of bands from some concert in San Francisco. In the song, the basic idea is that he is trying to get laid. "Baby, its alright. Maybe, you could stay here tonight." I was so engulfed with his heart-felt honesty that I bought 2 of his full length CD's. On the indredible rhapsody "Exist for Love", he becomes a little political with his lyrics: "I don't know why a woman would want to act like a man. But I say go ahead. 'Cause I exist for love." He is not following Platonian dialectical philosophy, nor is he right-wingedly condemning society. He is an old-town soothsayer who is reminiscent of a man with a cob pipe sitting in a rocking chair at the general store. His time-worn voice and forced rhymes give him a human imperfection that is refreshing in today's media mogul society. I cannot stress how much I endorse this man, his music, and the lessons we can all learn from his simplistic doctrine.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect make-out record.......2002-05-15

Every man has had this dilemma. You go on a date, it's goes well, and somehow, through some Divine miracle, the fine young lady you've taken out agrees to come back to your place. So you escort her into your bachelor pad, light some candles, find the two leftover microbrews still in your fridge (next to all the malt liquor and leftover chow fun), and prepare to make your move.

But what music do you play? Do you bust out the old copy of Master of Puppets? Bad idea. Marley? Yeah, it's good, but everybody makes out to Bob Marley. Even your parents have, and that's a horrifying thought. Do you play easy listening, like Kenny G? No, because no man would be caught dead with garbage like that in his CD collection. How about Radiohead? That would probably make her jump out the window. You could do the Stones, but you may want to save that in case you make some real progress.

So that leaves you with two options. You can play Lenny Kravitz, which is just fine. But really, what you want to play is a little Blackwater Surprise. Time to Discover is a perfect record for seduction. It's not too loud, not boring, and everyone who hears it likes it. The first two songs, "Higher," and "Ride," are hard edged blues that keep the atmosphere lively (so you can finish a drink, or six). But by the third track "Baby," the album practically cues you to start your romancin'. The album stays mellow and warm from that point on, and suddenly you've become a regular casanova.

And here's the best part. While you're scoring some liplocks, she'll pipe up and ask, "Hey, what's this?" Then you tell her what it is, and she'll say, "Hey, it's pretty good." Congrats. You're officially a good kisser AND you have good taste. It works like a charm, every time. Don't forget to thank the band for a successful evening, you lady-killer, you.

5 out of 5 stars TIME IS JUST WHAT WE NEED.......2002-04-19

THIS ALBUM IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. BRADLEYS VOCALS AND SONG WRITING ARE SUPERB. THE BAND ARE ALSO FINE MUSICIANS. STAND OUT TRACKS ARE BABY, TRAMP 2, ULTIMATE SACRIFICE, BUT ALMOST ALL THE THE SONGS ARE STRONG. THIS IS THE KIND OF MUSIC THAT SORELEY MISSED IN TODAYS SAPPY POP RADIO. TOO BAD HE IS NOT MORE WELL KNOWN. IF YOU LIKE ROCK/BLUES/ACOUSTIC SOUNDS BLENDED WITH A GREAT VOCALIST YOU WILL ENJOY THIS ONE. RBBS FAN

Album Description

The Jezebels were always attuned to the darker side of romance and sex, unlike the shiny, neutered pop yearnings of their contemporaries. Like most early 80's bands, they'd been weaned on glam rock, but it was the underground that was receptive to their punk-funk undertones and vision. Fronted by androgynous twins Jay and Michael Aston and featuring an evolving cast of musicians, the early recordings had an experimental edge that has kept the music fresh. Long unavailable, this classic catalog is finally re-issued in double disc packaging. "Discover" CD 1: a Top 40 UK chart entry, this was the album that got the band signed to Geffen in the US and introduced the classic line up. CD 2: this bonus disc includes some tracks never before issued on vinyl, let alone CD, which were only available on cassingle.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band!!!.......2007-05-21

Gene Loves Jezebel is definitely a great band! They are among the best bands from the 90's. All GLJ albuns I listened to so far are good. Highly recommended. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for G.L.J. fans!.......2006-03-11

I have been a Gene Loves Jezebel fan since the eighties, however I have lost touch of them in recent years. I recently purchased the two-cd editions of Discover, Immigrant, and Promise, and have been delighted with my purchases. The second cd for each one has brought back the reason I liked the band in the first place, containing plenty of rarities and songs previously unavailable on cd. They also include new photos, lyrics, and stories from members of the band. If you have been a fan of this G.L.J. era then you will be very pleased!!! Hope they re-release House of Dolls with extras!!!

1 out of 5 stars Excellent music, but.............2005-12-07

As my headline says, the music really is excellent, BUT -

someone please tell the kid to not sing any more!
UGH! He sounds like he's crying out for help (which I think he is). When the dude should be wailing, he croons and tries to pass his dull voice as cuteness, and comes off completely uncomplementary to some of the tunes.

Don't get me wrong - the music is beautiful, catchy, and can stand on their own without the singing, it's that good. But the singing let me down.......

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album.......2005-06-10

This has to be one of the best albums of 2005. Each track has clearly been written with gteat detail and clarity. This should be on the radio across america!

5 out of 5 stars Coolness.......2005-05-18

I picked this album up on a whim noticing the twothirtyeight affiliation. It's a very fresh, vibrant album that has a lot of fun. Highly recommended if you like cool original rock.
Great job

5 out of 5 stars A worthy successor.......2005-05-04

Chris Staples keeps up the quality with his new band, Discover America. The sound is closer his solo album, Blackest Hair, Bluest Eyes, than to his previous band, twothirtyeight. Fans of twothirtyeight should definitely check out both the solo album and this (which moves even further to the "indie" side of indie rock than twothirtyeight, though with more rock than the solo album).

The standout tracks are "From the 100th Floor," "Green Eyes" and "The Halves That Make Us Whole," but the whole album is solid.

I can't praise Psychology as quite highly as the transcendently awesome You Should Be Living, but it's fresh and well-produced and original and exciting and beautiful and the lyrics, as always with Mr. Staples, have so many snatches of brilliance that even the artsy poet types should be satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Still Puttin' It Down.......2005-05-03

Chris Staples is my favorite artist to date and though he's no longer with Twothirtyeight he's still puttin' it down. Personally "Green Eyes" and "Halves That Make Us Whole" have to be the best songs on the album. "Call It In The Air" is the A-side of "Psychology" while the rest have the 'Heart on his sleeve' feel. Overall I would say the entire album is a great listen from begining to end. Now all I need is a show date here in Seattle.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Van Dyke Parks Is a Master.......2007-01-15

This album is simply amazing. I have this one and 'Song Cycle,' and it is my favorite of the two. His creativity is golden. The composition and arrangements are first class. I do not get tired of listening to this over and over.

5 out of 5 stars ...they look nice from far, but they're far from nice!.......2006-06-03

After reading reviews for other Van Dyke Parks albums on this site, I'm amazed at how easily this one gets overlooked; Mr. Parks certainly has many strong albums which deserve heaping amounts of credit (Song Cycle and Jump! come to mind first), but to me this one is the perfect blend of the artistic sensibilities of "Song Cycle" and the listenability and pop/catchiness of "Clang of the Yankee Reaper" (The albums released just before and after "Discover America"). To my ears, this one has just the right combination of elements from both albums, and has proven to be the one I come back to listen to the most. Some people may gripe that there are a number of covers on this album (as another reviewer mentioned, "Roosevelt in Trinidad" contains a number of the original versions): But this is where Park's talent for instrumentation, arranging and personalizing material shines through. This album swells and swoons in all the right places; it is a funky feverish haze with exquisite instrumentation, arrangements, and just the right mix of artistic pretention and outright feelgood funkiness. A tropical cocktail that'll shake you!

3 out of 5 stars Three stars for Mr. Van Dyke Parks.......2005-01-05

This is another strange album by Van Dyke Parks. It features a storyline, of sorts, about the history of popular music and Trinidad. The music is played Caribbean style. Not as good as Parks' collaborations with Brian Wilson, but it's pleasant enough.

4 out of 5 stars cool album........2003-12-06

i bought it on cassette for like $2. it is weird but that is what is so cool about it. the arrangements are very interesting. the production is a lo-fi. but it is melodic and has a cool version of 'sailin shoes', which was done in a better known version by little feat later on. i would say it was definitely a good purchase

5 out of 5 stars You gotta hear this album!.......2002-06-05

While this is without a doubt one of the most bizarre albums of all time, it is also one of the best. Themes of 20th Century Americana (FDR, the Mills Brothers, Bela Lugosi, Mae West, Bing Crosby, etc.) rolled up in Trinidadian rhythms. Who could pass that up? You can't help but enjoy this one!

Recommendation: if you like "Discover America", be sure to check out the CD "Roosevelt In Trinidad: Calypsos of Events, Places and Personalities, 1933-1939" also available via Amazon. Aside from featuring the original versions of the title track and "The Four Mills Brothers", "Roosevelt in Trinidad" and "Bing Crosby", it contains some (older) calypsos you're liable to not hear anywhere else.

The sound quality is excellent, easy to listen to. There is definitely a "lite" feel about the CD on the whole, pleasantly upbeat.
