Strong Album.......2006-06-07
Bought this album at World of Music (aka WOM) in Frankfurt, Germany circa 1990. It's a good mellow, witty album. However, being a guy, it's a bit "girlie" for me to give it 5 stars.
I can recommend this album for the thoughtful, bohemian-type females that like reading and self-introspection.
For us thoughtful guys...I whole-heartedly recommend Ben Watt's "North Marine Drive". It's certainly 5 stars.
Wonderful.......2001-05-29
Some albums you can listen to for a week or two.@A good album can sound fresh for maybe a year, but I`ve been regularly listening to this for the last 17 years. And it still impresses me. So obviously anyone who likes the earlier Everything But the Girl and particularly those who always found Ben Watt a bit irritating should be interested. If you are a real fan you should also check out Tracy`s earlier still incarnation as one of the Marine Girls where you will find some sweet and youthful songs, but nothing quite as splendid as Distant Shore
Tracy before the Girl.......2001-02-19
As one who can appriciate Everything but the Girl pre-Todd Terry mix of "missing," this is a very enjoyable album. As EBTG moves to the icon status of this wonderful female voice behind Ben Watt's beats--constantly challenging the adult-contemporary audience, inspiring the dance/electronic world, as well as my girlfriend's father's (a man in his 50s) ears--it's nice to remember where they came from. Tracy and her guitar, a few vocal layers in the mixing--that's it. this album is beautiful in it's simplicity. Highpoints to enjoy while you relax or immerse in melancholia, is "new opened eyes" and her cover of lou reed's "femme fatale." you'll get this album if you love her mysterious vocals--a bit unrefined, lacking confidence, but wonderful.

Customer Reviews:
A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06
I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."
Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense, for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.
The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.
Purchase the CD for not only your favorites but for the nice variety that Martin put together. You will be surprised that you will love the scores, even of the movies you may not have seen!

The Waterford-born singer Karan Casey has been on a highly personal journey since she left the Irish-American supergroup Solas. Her solo albums, of which this is the third, reveal a questing nature and a deceptively fragile-sounding, vibrato-enhanced soprano. At times, Casey brings the early Dolly Parton to mind, especially when she's essaying modal ballads that recall the Celtic-derived American Appalachian tradition and its tributaries. Her material ranges from Irish and Scottish folkways to modern story songs, many of which deal with immigration and other forms of displacement. The poignant opening tune, composed by British songwriter-activist Billy Bragg, is a meditation about a frightened, uprooted newcomer dealing with homesickness and hostile natives. The sensuous yet coolly ascetic semi-acoustic arrangements feature prominent banjo, fiddle, low whistle, and accordion vamps, plus an atmospheric solo piano. Guest artists Karen Matheson (lead vocals in Capercaillie ), bluegrass singer-mandolinist Tim O'Brien, and American roots player Dirk Powell all make indelible impressions. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic for what it is.......2006-04-30
This CD is really excellent in its genre. Generally, I listen to more mainstream things, though I really enjoy most talented female singers. Karan Casey did not disappoint. I heard her live at an Irish Festival and her haunting vocals, often teamed with gorgeous accompaniments, keep me a big fan. The other reviews have covered her style quite well, so I won't even try to.
If you have an appreciation for talented female singers and enjoy moving, traditional pieces, this CD is absolutely for you. And that's coming from someone who is about to go write reviews for Outkast, Linkin Park and TuPac.
Irish is not "Celtic".......2005-10-03
I'm gradually being driven nuts by the misleading use of the word "Celtic". The Celts are only one influence on Ireland and that applies to music as much as anything else. No-one in Ireland speaks about "Celtic" music so please drop it.
Exquisite and haunting.......2004-09-17
Some years ago, upon the recommendation of another, I picked up the Karan Casey album, Songlines. I enjoyed the album immensely, thought her voice beautiful, lyrical. I've long been a fan of British and Irish folk music and Casey's voice is particularly distinctive. Not to sound trite, her music has an innocent, angelic quality.
On a recent trip to a store specializing in Irish music, I looked up "Karan Casey" in their extensive stacks and came upon this CD. I've now been listening to the album for a couple of weeks and I think it even better, more mature, more emotionally evocative than her earlier work.
Among the most haunting tracks is "Song of Lies," which I play again and again, savoring the poetry of its lyrics, the simplicity and beauty of her interpretation.
If you were to buy one and only one CD this year, you'd not go wrong making this one your choice!
"So full of hope but prone to grief.".......2004-07-29
Karan Casey, with classical training in Irish music and a huge vocal range, sings Irish traditional songs and contemporary ballads with simple accompaniments, often using traditional Irish instruments--the bodhran, the fiddle, the low whistle, and the concertina--and sometimes including instruments from other countries, the bouzouki from Greece and the berimbao from Brazil. With a light, "innocent," and almost whispery soprano, she imbues her often mournful songs with an honest passion that is rare in contemporary folk singing. In the title song, her choice of accompaniments--the low whistle, the electric bass, and drums--creates such an insistent beat and ominous background that when she plaintively sings of being "washed up on a distant shore," the reader's sympathies are fully engaged.
All of the songs here are laments, tragic narratives, or songs of hard work and the hope of survival, and all are in minor keys. Though some songs are in faster tempos and may have syncopations, these are not "uptempo" in mood. Casey stresses the displacement of the Irish, the poverty, and the need to "stay strong." In various songs she emphasizes a life "full of hope but prone to grief," states that "them that works hardest are the least provided," and says, "We won't worry about the government, worry about the way to go." "The Ballad of Tim Evans" tells about a man executed for murdering his wife and child, though he was innocent. "The Four Loom Weaver" tells of having "nowt to eat...I feel in my heart I'll soon starve." And both "Distant Shore" and "Bata is Bothar" deal with the unhappiness of immigration.
Casey's voice is at its most versatile in "Lord MacDonald's," sung in Gaelic, as in rapid tempo her voice lightly dances up and down her range in a song with few pauses, the Gaelic refrain combining with drums for dramatic power. In the unusual love song "Quiet of the Night," a mournful tune with a double bass, she becomes a person who decides to stay strong, a woman who "love[s] you in my heart because you let me be," a particularly affecting concertina solo adding to the drama. This magnificent voice singing heartbreaking songs reflects the Irish melancholia one so often sees in the country's poets. Here Karan Casey becomes a poet in song. Mary Whipple
Karan does it again.......2003-08-26
This is surely as good as folk music gets anywhere. Karan Casey's third solo album since leaving Solas is another of exquisite beauty and fine taste - for those familiar with her fine previous albums, expect the same pleasures here. Songs are from traditional and modern sources, including one written by Karan herself. Scottish band Capercaillie members Donald Shaw, Mike McGoldrick and Ewan Vernal are among the many talented session musicians. The backing is sweet and complementary, precisely matching the rise and fall of Karan's tender poetic voice with keyboards, guitars, fiddle, whistle, concertina, mandolin, banjo, vocals and various types of percussion. There's a variety of lyrical themes throughout the album. Billy Bragg's "Distant Shore" tells of crossing the sea to escape everything except memories, and there are love songs like "The Song of Lies", "The Curra Road" and "Quiet of the Night", as well as ballads like Ewan MacColl's "Ballad of Tim Evans', "The Four-Loom Weaver" and "The Jute Mill Song". Two are sung in Gaelic. Karan has a way of getting deep into the soul of the music which will in turn reach deep into the heart of every listener. Thoroughly captivating. Full marks again.

Distant shore within.......2001-09-21
I was paralyzed when i first heard her deeply melancholic voice in "better things" of Massive attack. This cd has accompanied an important period in my life.
In this cd tracey's soul is accompanied with a solo guitar. She takes you to a 30 min journey down to your deepest chambers of your soul. But this journey in autumn is to a distant shore to which not everyone would dare. This is certainly an excellent album for those who wish to shed light on the dark side of their souls.
No masterpiece, but still worthwhile.......2001-07-03
It's hard not to listen to Ms. Thorn's 1982 EP without thinking of her in Everything But The Girl. In these eight early songs, there are hints of the retro feel of some EBTG music (in her jaunty cover of the VU classic "femme fatale," and in the breezy Bacharachian feel of "Dreamy"). Since it's just Tracey singing with her own guitar as accompaniment, I was also struck by her skills as a guitar player. I already knew she could do more than just sing after seeing EBTG live a few years ago, but her guitar work on this CD is solid throughout. None of these tunes approaches the level of her best work with Ben Watt in EBTG, but some of them are still quite good.
Surprised..........1999-09-07

On this disc, McFarlane, best known for his playing of Renaissance dance music, proves equally adept in a completely different style. These Baroque lute pieces are more serious and perhaps more musically demanding than the Renaissance pieces, but McFarlane takes them in stride. His technique on the Baroque lute is amazingly fluent and secure, and his stylish performances of this music offer great clarity of complex textures and some lovely embellishments. Kellner may be less well known than Bach and Weiss, but his music is comfortable in their company. The arrangement of the music on the disc makes a very good program for continuous listening. This is a thoroughly gratifying and beautifully recorded collection. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:
don't be duped into buying this.......2005-08-24
While this was released by the same company as Fantasy Dreams (Vol. 1.) this is not performed by the same band/person. While Fantasy Dreams (Vol. 1) included wonderful re-arranged renditions on classic film themes performed by Metasonica, this CD is simply compiled by cheezy synthesized tracks from various budget compilations.
