Product Description
Originally issued as a mid-price album in June 1972, Earthbound consists of highlights from Crimson's US tour from January to March of that year recorded on stereo cassette. Rejected for release by their American record company at the time, (due to poor sound quality) Earthbound was the first 'official bootleg' issued by a major rock group. It must have come as something of a shock for fans of their meticulous studio output to hear such a raw, aggressive sounding band. Declan Colan Music. 2005.

On his fourth release, and first of all-original material, Composer-producer Paul Schwartz explores themes inspired by the night. He generates a lush, dreamy sound that will appeal to fans of Enigma, William Orbit, and Caroline LaVelle. In fact, some of Earthbound echoes the feeling of LaVelle's 1995 album, Spirit, as well as Orbit's work on Madonna's Ray of Light.

Known for placing sampled and re-edited opera classics over orchestrations and dance grooves on the classical crossover hits Aria and Aria 2, Schwartz now invokes different combinations of neoclassical music, dance grooves, and ethereal pop, and he deploys a 30-piece orchestra on many of these new tracks. Vocalist Lisbeth Scott lends her talents to several compositions, including the poppy electronica of "The Dark of the Night" and the heavily orchestrated "Ravens," which features a haunting string melody to match the poignant and morose lyrics. Folk singer Tara MacLean sings on the downtempo pop of the title track, while the composer delivers a solemn piano "Nocturne" to end the album. While Earthbound treads a lot of familiar ground, Schwartz makes his nocturnal musings warm and welcoming. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-02-22

A nice selection of compositions with rich vocals. Different than Aria and State of Grace but equally enjoyable in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic, melodic and haunting.......2004-11-04

Paul Schwartz was new to me when I discovered his State of Grace albums, then realized he also authored the Aria albums. I found I really love his melodies, the pure voices of the female vocals, the arrangements which remind me of Bill Douglas, and the solid piano playing. This is very professional and very satisfying work. I can't recommend it highly enough!
If you are a new romantic this is an album for you. I keep replaying it and joyfully revelling in the lilting melodies. This ia very up-to-date and utterly beautiful music.
Have a listen to State of Grace II as well. You won't believe the beautiful arrangements!

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2004-07-07

While a BIG fan of Aria 2: New Horizons ... I found Earthbound to be bland and was disappointed with the album as a whole. I am new to his music and found some of the past reviews for Earthbound misleading. Overall: more oppresive, less uplifting.

Anyone commenting, please feel free to point us to the more climactic and better written work (I highly recommend Aria 2).

4 out of 5 stars I feel like movin'.......2004-03-18

Music has always "moved" me all my long life. When I heard "Earthbound" I listened over and over, which is unusual for me. I had loaned the cd from our local library and knew I wanted to buy it for my own collection. I'll certainly checked into other material by this artist. My soul absolutely soured when I hear the first selection! Thank you for this creation!

5 out of 5 stars swimming in a river of stars.......2004-01-24

If I had but a handful of CDs to take with me on a deserted island this would be one of them! Paul Schwartz is a remarkable composer for he's succeeded time and time again to broaden the confining barriers of classical music, providing a modern twist that'll appeal to a wider audience, but without taking away from the pureness of the genre either with the common use of too much electronics. His trademark sound of ethereal singing with lush, ambient melodies breathtakingly accenting instruments such as violins, cellos and harps are always unmistakable but 'Aria I' & 'Aria II: New Horizon' chiefly featured the powerful voice of Rebecca Luker, giving popular pieces such as "Ave Maria" and "Ebben" more of an operatic air to them, while here on 'Earthbound' things are toned down a bit with folk singer Tara MacLean lending her gorgeous voice to the amazing, heartrending title track and Lisbeth Scott gracing many of the selections with her pristine beauty that's sure to send shivers (but in a good way) down your spine, as she does me. I also love the magical lyrics which can be heard throughout the album with only three instrumentals: 'I dream a dark caressing ocean shore. The moon has drawn me to its side. I glimpse the shadow of a mystery that floats beyond my fingers as I cry. And the stars shine on the dune. And I see you in the moonlight.' "Nevermore" is probably my favorite piece with the lovely Emily Aylmer and Ruth Cahill on vocals.

One thing I respect about Paul's new direction and apparent growth as a musician in his most recent projects is his ability to conduct and orchestrate original material (with a few exceptions, of course) without excessively borrowing from past repertoires that have been polished countless times over. It's tarnishing originality and I'm frankly becoming bored with most crossover acts these days so, for now, I'll be turning back to this and the rest of his releases instead of buying most of the unnecessary waste that's been coming out lately. Paul is extremely gifted with diverse talents that shine through in his music, which is moving and very awe-inspired and I'd recommend this to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!!!.......2007-04-30

This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Great year one compilation.......2007-01-09

This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.

If you are Space:1999 fan, it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2006-07-27

Talk about bringing back memories. The music is crisp-clear & updated. For the 1999 fans-this is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01

Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.

Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.

Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.

However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09

I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

    4 out of 5 stars give her a chance!!!!!.......2006-10-13

After reading all of the reviews for this album, iam totally shocked. First of all, i think people are expecting an electronic zero 7 sound. Thats what you are not going to get, thank god. Sophie has made a charming organic smooth album. Mostly acoustic guitar with that gorgeous voice is all she needs. Robin guthrie from the cocteau twins adds his atmosperic guitar edge on 4 cuts, which are worth buying the album alone! Sophies biggest mistake on her debut was not letting robin produce the whole thing. His etheriel sound compliments her voice just perfect. But, make no mistake, the rest of the album is worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars it works for me..........2006-03-20

i actually prefer this to the zero 7 albums. i give it 5 stars not because it blows me away but because i can listen to it all the way through. this is PERFECT winter music. 'stop me' and 'start me' would have to be my favorites. i love the dreamy guitars - i think robin guthrie had something to do with it? at any rate, it's a beautiful album and i'd recommend it to almost anyone.

    3 out of 5 stars Mediocre offering.......2006-03-10

I found a few songs on this album charming but overall found it to be a mediocre offering.

5 out of 5 stars this is what you call real music..........2005-12-01

I'm sorry, but most of the other reviewers obviously don't know what real, interesting music is...'Earthbound'. This album is interesting as it is fresh, and PROFESSIONAL reviewers also comment on how amazing this album is.

My advice to those critics slamming this album is don't try and review good music...you're no good at it.

This album is fantastic and a real godsend in the days of trash. Each track is individual and possess the qualities of perfect music. If you're looking for Zero 7, this may not be what you're looking for. But if you want to hear proper music that is actually interesting, I suggest this small investment.

4 out of 5 stars NOT zero 7 BUT shopie barker.......2005-11-09

i don't understand the other reviewers, this is a great album, it's a sohpie barker album, very different & fresh. i recommend it when you're taking a bath after a long work day.
i'm waiting for the new zero 7 album (coming out soon) but this is a great way of waiting it.. not the best of the year but honestly.. very pleasent.

the minimalism is here, simplicity after all. enjoy it.

I first heard Billy on 88.5 here in Philly and just by chance, was able to catch a show at the the Tin Angel. Fell right in his groove but soon lost the cd. 4 years later and I just found him again and purchased another copy. This is a powerful work of art. It's a shame that Billy did not get more coverage. His craft is outstanding. Treat yourself to this cd (if you can still get one....)

    Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars wow.......2003-11-14

I recovered this CD from a pile of my brother's old ones when he moved out. Billy Mann is by far one of the most talented and emotional songwriters and musicians I have ever heard. I can't believe that it's out of print. His self-titled CD is also amazing. I'm particularly fond of "how do I say goodbye," but the entire cd is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums!.......1999-08-29

An absolute success. I saw Billy in concert and bought his album for one reason: he and I share last names. Buying that CD turned out to be one of my best music purchases ever! I am constantly listening to CD, and love every song. You can't help but sing along too, because the lyrics are so real. Grab Billy's CD now--trust me, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe this one got under the radar!.......1999-05-30

How is it that an album with this much depth, fun, and creativity gets unnoticed? I found this purely on accident, and it is still in constant rotation for me. "Beat Myself Up" is a total singalong, and then he switches gears and rips your heart out with "Said It All". If you like good songwriting, and great vocals, grab this now.

5 out of 5 stars Discover this undiscovered talent!.......1999-02-22

I enjoyed Billy Mann's first album tremendously, but he outdid himself with Earthbound. His songwriting got better on Earthbound, and songs as diverse as "How Do I Say Goodbye" and "Make God Laugh" make you want to comfort him and laugh with him at the same time. I tell my friends that if they buy this album and don't like it, I'll refund the money for them. So far, I haven't had any requests for refunds!

3 out of 5 stars too bad about the sound........2007-03-10

This record probably should never have been released because the sound is really bad. Takes away from what is really a set of good performances. It does, however, contain one of the best versions of schizoid man ever caught on tape. Fripp absolutely burns on this one. He had come a long way since 1969. I like the loose jam numbers too. Mel Collins is a great sax player and his work on this record is excellent. Ian Wallace's drumming is good too. A better band musically than the "Islands" record would lead you to think. Be sure to pick up "ladies of the road" for a much better sounding live show from this tour.

3 out of 5 stars This isn't all that bad.......2006-12-15

Yes, it is an official bootleg recording and the sound suffers mostly due to the fact that this was recorded on cassettes straight from the mixing board. I disagree however with the opinion that this sounded worse on record. The original Japan import of this I had years ago on record actually sounded better. Thank you Tower records. I think that this is probably due to the fact since cds have a higher resolution rate they tend to make albums that were subpar recordings sound even more so. The remastering team of Fripp and company did the best they could. If you want a better sounding live album check out King Crimson's official web site and purchase one of the collector's club releases from this time. However, keep in mind that the performances on here are actually pretty good to great. Schizoid Man rocks real hard. Sailor's Tale has some great guitar work by Fripp.Groon show that King Crimson is the "prog rock" British equal to the Grateful Dead.

2 out of 5 stars Good performance, Rough sound.......2006-11-11

My rating must be weighted as thusly:
-Three stars for hardcore Crim-heads, completists or very open minded listeners
-One star for just about anyone else
-so, an everage of 2 stars

Although this CD features somewhat improved sound over the original vinyl (yes, it DID indeed sound worse than this), be warned that this is a bootleg C+ sound quality.

That being said, there is some fairly good music buried under the muddy, oversaturated sound. This is not the tight, focused Crim we've heard before, but a loose (sloppy?) jam version. This reason alone makes it worth a listen for the curious fan. Mel Collins' sax is very up front in the mix, quite different from the studio releases and very jarring on first listen. Fripp's guitar is often buried, Boz Burrell's vocals (which I never liked all that much) are electronically treated (VCS3?) with mixed results. Yet...on the rare occasion I pull this one out to listen to, I find myself enjoying it. I treat it as a stand-alone version of the ever-changing creature that is King Crimson.

There are now better sounding (and performed) recordings of this era and I urge you to serach these out first unless you are a completist or very adventurous.

No words to describe this guy. Unfortunately, he did not record "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" on ths CD. It is the best recording ever. It can be heard on a soundtrack "Forever Mine". The movie is OK, but the acting sucks. Now, the music is something else...

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-06-24

All I can say is that from the moment that I heard this guy in concert, his songs have stuck in my head. He's got such a great voice and the song-writing ability to go with it, I can't believe he's not better known. I love Ordinary People, it's one of my all time favourite tracks, so hauntingly beautiful. One wonders where he is now...

      5 out of 5 stars Conner Carey!!!!.......2004-05-04

Well what can I say? being a huge Mariah Carey Fan I stumbled across The Conner Reeves "Earthbound" song on a British Complimation Cd and OMG I was shocked to hear that such a voice out there exsists. The album is a must buy, there is 10Trks on it and may fave have to be "Earthbound and Ordinary People" can that man sing. On the reflection of album sales Sadly Telstar records dont represent Conner anymore (There lose not his)instead he has recently been writing hits for the likes of Cher and Tina Turner. Hopefully Conner will find the right representation in the future and give us a follow up to his Earthbound Cd.

      Thanks Conner for the Music...

Oh ya and hence why I wrote Conner Carey.. I think a duet with the woman herself would be the bomb

5 out of 5 stars A soul of soothing essence.......2003-07-13

      Captivating, soulful and sincerely soothing.

Conner Reeves has a beautiful voice, which encaptured me because of his ability to sing from the soul, heart and mind.

There are 10 songs on this album and all written or co-written by Reeves. I found the songs either sassy, sultry, soulful, uplifting or entailed with a tantalizing groove.

Highlights include My Father's Son, Earthbound and Ordinary People.

There are also Brooklyn Funk remixes of some songs, but are not included with this CD.

I finally obtained a copy of this CD but it was very difficult as they are no longer available.

Reeves is an exceptional vocalist and truly talented artist.

      5 out of 5 stars 15 out of 10.......2002-02-19

I first listened to the album 'Earthbound' in early 1998. Since then, I've purchased loads of cd's, but very FEW artistes come up to Conner Reeves' standard. His soulful voice, combined with high notes in various songs, and the so-meaningful words in each and every track, is just amazing. His cd is first on my list for a 'fave cd of all time' award. His talent is not appreciated enough, but if he got more exposure, I'm positive he would be a hit, and launch another fabulous cd. God knows how many other great ballads he's got written, just waiting to be shared amongst us.

Many critisize this album for it's sound quality. Well being in a digital age we can be rather cynical, but besides that, I own this on vinyl, original from it's release in 1972 and I think the slightly rough sound add's even more to the raw, powerful music that is known as KING CRIMSON!

"21st Century Schizoid man" clocks in at over 11 minutes long and has a powerful message yet reonating back-garage feel. This song alone live on this album, is one of the best thing's I've heard in terms of jazz, blues, and other elemements of music that make this "prog rock" gem worth a try! To give you a better idea of what this album is about, just look at the track listing below. All in all a great live "prog rock" album that is great for any fan of great guitar and instrumental technics, or just progressive rock in general.

"Peoria" (Boz Burrell, Mel Collins, Fripp, Ian Wallace) - 7:30
Recorded at the Barn, Peoria, USA, March 10, 1972

      "Sailor's Tale (Fripp) - 4:45
Recorded at the Baseball Park, Jacksonville, USA, February 26, 1972

"Earthbound" (Burrell, Collins, Fripp, Wallace) - 7:08
Recorded at Kemp Coliseum, Orlando, USA, February 27, 1972

      "Groon" (Fripp) - 15:30

You'd be a fool to waste your money on this.....regardless of the fact it is a HDCD....it was obviously a poor quality soundboard tape......the vocals are so overdriven....they actually burp.......the music isnt all that bad......for recorded quality......but if you really must buy it....just get a cheap used copy......I spent $5.99 for mine used...and that was even too much.

1 out of 5 stars An Absolute MESSterpiece!!!.......2004-10-04

As a long time King Crimson fan, I have to admit I'm puzzled and troubled by the re-release of Earthbound (outside of the fact it was by huge fan demand). It just goes to show that even the best digital remastering implements can only go so far in cleaning up an inherently bad recording. But what do you expect, it was originally taped on a casssette recorder in pouring rain.

But the sound quality issue nearly pales compared to the performance itself, which in this Owl's opinion was HIDEOUS! What I hear is 3/4 of a functioning band bogged down by one very weak component in the system, namely bassist/singer Boz Burrell, whose vocal ability is rather dodgy at best and his bass skills rather rudimentary (he had NEVER played an instrument prior to coming onboard, Robert Fripp had to teach him by rote how to play). Instead of having a situation where the musicians challenge each other to greater heights, what winds up happening is that the musicians have to play down to that person's weaknesses. The end result, a muddled at times inept version of Crimson that had to resort to 2 or 3 chord jams to fill out things in addition to the composed pieces that Boz had just barely enough competence to play. Try as hard as they did, Fripp, Mel Collins and Ian Wallace just couldn't get the beast to wake up and roar to life. Collins and Fripp sound especially frustrated in their playing (Mel Collins skronking far more than usual). Boz's scat vocals are laughable at best, I actually would've welcomed a guest appearance by William Shatner on some of this just to make it halfway interesting.

Thankfully, this version of KC was short-lived and not long after, Fripp found the players for what would become the most loved version of KC (Wetton, Bruford, Muir, Cross).

Chalk it up to experience, never settle for less.

4 out of 5 stars Complete chaos at its best, stupid scat singing at worst.......2004-09-20

King Crimson's "Earthbound" has a terrible reputation even within Crimheads (which I'm not). I think this album's been brought back from the grave which Robert Fripp consigned it to; the remastering that was done is damn near miraculous. This album had a dubious reputation as having one of the worst official live mixes on vinyl ever, so the sound, while definitely not perfect, is far, far better than the LP. So the band's benefited from this sound improvement. The band here is Robert Fripp on fuzzed-out, waywardly rockin' electric guitar, Mel Collins on careening, shrieking saxes and icy mellotron, Boz Burrell on oily, groove-oriented bass guitar and gritty, occasionally ridiculous vocals (though he's a better singer and bassist than he's usually given credit for), and Ian Wallace on incredibly layered drums and bass drum abuse (to get what I mean, listen to the samples). Hunter MacDonald should be given credit as soundman (not as engineer) and VCS3 synthesizer operator. The VCS3 is responsible for some very interesting moments on the CD, so MacDonald gets some good moments too.
This album's totally atypical within the Crimson catalog - two of the tracks, "Peoria" and "Earthbound", are live, rather funky blues jams that Fripp released as group compositions. The other three tracks are the perennial favorite "21st Century Schizoid Man", the awe-insipiring "The Sailor's Tale", and a very long, extended take on an old B-side called "Groon". All in all, it's a surprise from beginning to end - kind of like King Crimson's "Metallic K.O.". Proceedings blast into the stratosphere immediately with an absolutely brilliant version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" - it's so raw, so witless, yet so virtuosic, and so on the verge of atonal collapse that it truly illustrates the impossible balancing act that Crimson was as a live combo. Most still think they're better live than studio, which I think is true - this album kicks far more ass than "Islands" ever did. Fripp's chainsawing solo and Collins' reed torturing on "Schizoid Man" are truly worth hearing, and Burrell sounds like he's had a ping-pong ball shot through his larynx - I love it! Things immediately deteriorate, though, with "Peoria". Good instrumental playing from everyone here, but Burrell's vocal improvs (I won't deign to call them scats) are so stupid and banal that they nearly ruin the jam for me. I can laugh at him, though, most days of the week. Things pick back up to the same brilliant level with an astounding version of "The Sailor's Tale", with great bass from Burrell, astonishingly violent drumming from Wallace, and Fripp and Collins in startling form - Collins in particular sounds marvelous. It's faded on a Wallace drum solo, and then we get "Earthbound", which is better then "Peoria" because of some cracking funk drumming from Wallace, even if Boz plays a very, um, minimal bass line. "Groon" is a looonnnggg jam on an old B-side. It has "artistic self-indulgence" written all over it, but Collins, Fripp and Wallace sound pretty great (Wallace sounds so cool through the VCS3), and Burrell plays some more good bass. Hey, I think he's a quite good bassist myself, just not exactly as good as King Crimson would demand. And could you exactly blame him for not always sounding so great? He'd only learned how to play bass from Robert Fripp right before recording "Islands"! So, all in all, it's a great album. Get this and "Ladies of the Road" to hear this lineup of Crimson live - you may agree that they sound a lot better live than in the studio.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, and not JUST for collectors!.......2004-09-07

Okay, I'll just say that for an alleged remaster, the sound quality on this album is very rough, being more like a very poor-quality bootleg. Nonetheless, that hardly gets in the way.

Only five songs, this is a definate signature King Crimson live album - it's over 45 minutes long! Hardly overkill, this is what the average Crimso concert must be like.

Boz really shines with his vocals here, and sadly this was his last recorded effort (I think?) with Crimso. Too bad. He was good.

There are many improv moments throughout, especially on "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "Earthbound." The latter track has a crazy, CRAZY drum solo a la the great Ian Wallace. Oh my god, just TRY to listen to this solo and NOT go insane!

This is actually a neat little live album. Get it even if you're not a hardcore Crimso collector like I am (I'm getting every album in chronological order, or by the year a live album was recorded in - right now I'm up to LARK'S TONGUES IN ASPIC). This is a great little glimpse into the crazy world of one of the coolest bands you'll ever hear.

4 out of 5 stars Earthbound gets it's due at last!.......2003-11-18

Earthbound was King Crimson's fifth album. Upon its initial release, it was chainsawed by just about every music critic for it's woeful sound quality and the woeful musicianship that seemed to pervade the album. True, until only a couple of years ago, the only way to even listen to this album was through a bootleg CD of an old LP. Before I bought my compact disc version of Earthbound all I had to listen to was an old Italian import from the late seventies-and boy, was the sound on that woeful! So, on the 30th anniversary edition, the sound quality is nothing short of revelatory. Fripp has done miracles with the songs here; granted, there is still a lot of distortion and fuzz on the opener, 21st Century Schizoid Man, but the bass and sax solos come through very distinctly, whereas before there was only a hint that something other than loud drumming was going on. Boz's distorted vocals are a true marvel of creepiness through that device, the VCS3. That said, the rest of the album you will either love or hate for its jazzy lean. You'll get the picture with the next cut, Peoria, a loose jazz-improv played in the city of its namesake. As one Amazon reviewer pointed out, (and as the liner notes hint at) the rest of band apart from Fripp had further plans after the Crimson tour was to have run out, so the playing seems to have a non-committal feel to it-you just have the feeling that these guys were past the make-the- customer-satisfied point in their tour obligations, which in itself isn't an evil. Collins's sax playing is ferocious. Arguably he's the real star of this album. "Sailor's Tale" seems to be the only other Crimson proper song. It's a great showcase for Fripp's distorted guitar and the ever-pervasive mellotron. Then there's the title track, another original you'll only find on this album. This is probably the funkiest of the songs; once more, Collins's sax playing is ear candy. Boz's vocals, however, should have stayed in the VCS3. This song is interesting, because despite its looseness, there is still a lot of discipline working-I know this sounds stupid, but you get the idea when you put Larks Tongues in Aspic in the player. The Earthbound song sort of predicts the direction Fripp is heading towards. The last song is a reworked blast from their past, Groon, but it's as you've never heard it before, thanks to the sax-propelled funk injected. Here the rhythm section of Wallace/Boz particularly shines and for a brief time Fripp seems to get lost in his own background, until everything just kind of meanders with that overly long drum solo. I also agree with Fripp that this incarnation of Crimson had gone about as far as it could go with the particular musical direction it was pursuing. Thankfully Fripp had the wisdom to move towards more improvised heavy rock-and towards what would be Crimson's Golden Age on Lark's Tongues, Starless and Bible Black, and Red.

      5 out of 5 stars Grooned.......2003-08-07

Not bad, really, at all, and it's nice to know Fripp has found his sense of irony. This particular incarnation of Crimson- -hand-picked by Fripp, of course- -had all but disbanded by the time the tour on which this was recorded had even begun. You can tell. Boz Burrell, Ian Wallace and Mel Collins were headed to join Alexis Korner shortly to record an album as Snape, so they had no worries (Fripp was outnumbered anyway). Most of these tracks were encores, and as the band was nonexistent- -that is, not any longer Fripp's- -the three decided to just have as good a time as possible to get through it all. It seems they succeeded. 'Schizoid Man' is about as intense as things can get (very), and on 'Peoria' and 'Earthbound' you can practically hear Fripp cringing as the rest of the band just says 'what the hey' and does their own thing whether he likes it or not: hence the funky, bluesy extended jams and Burrell's strutting lyrics to 'Peoria', which Fripp no doubt took personally as he guested in his own band. Very interesting. The dodgy sound and weird segues fit perfectly and lend a very appropriately scuzzy aura to the whole affair. Awesome. I like it, you might not.

4 out of 5 stars Naff sound quality = great record.......2003-03-07

A true rock oddity makes a welcome appearence on CD.
The recording quality is admittedly the worst Ive ever heard on an official live album but then again, Earthbound is not about crystal clear sound. Listen to the material - the Crims plough through a succession of low-down-and-dirty blues numbers (Groon, Peoria, Earthbound), with Messrs. Fripp, Burrell, Collins and Wallace laying down the jam like theres no tomorrow full of dark, primal energy (which is what the blues is all about isnt it?). The, erm, unpolished sound quality kind of complements, even enhances, the music. It works for me, anyway. Theres a positively unhinged rendition of 21st Century Schizoid Man with manic vocals/shouting by Boz Burrell (later bassist with Bad Company, fact fans) and a creepy Sailors Tale with a great little sax run by the wonderful sax-player/flautist Mel Collins. To sum up, then, the untidy sound actually adds to the listening experience endowing it with a peculiar atmosphere and dark charm (a King Crimson trademark) - an album that is quite simply greater than the sum of its parts. Great cover too.

5 out of 5 stars The hell of an album.......2002-11-30

At last EARTHBOUND on cd!This LIVE album is incredible and unique. It is not an usual LIVE but jams or pieces of songs-fade in fade out.The sound is very rough, the performances are highlights of King Crimson's songs in a very unusual form, it almost sound like they decided to take the heaviest and most frantic parts of their shows and leave the rest behind-except 21st century which is in its full version.
It is an unrealistic live, sometimes frustrating because you know there was more before and after the fades, but it is also what makes it so brilliant. No waste of time or space.Very different from any other KING CRIMSON live, EARTHBOUND is to me their most powerful, creative and brutal recording.A BLAST!

3 out of 5 stars Earthbound but highly flying.......2002-11-22

If you have followed the history of Fripp's comments on Crim, you know he harboured no great love for this record. Nonetheless it is an important document vindicating that this formation of KC was much better than its reputation.
Considered a sloppy blowing band saddled with naff material, based on the legacy of their studio effort, the Collins, Wallace and Burrell partnership with Fripp is too often skipped over. The joy in this outfit was their playing. Perhaps more Cannonball Adderly than John Coltrane or Ornette Coleman, nonetheless they could swing instrumentally. They had a firm foundation in the blues, as Burrell and Wallace and Collins would demonstrate post-Crim. Burrell, brave soul that he was, gave it his best, but neither his voice nor the loopy lyrics of Sinfield, who was thankfully about to be out of the picture, ever quite matched up in any convincing way.
So the great thing about this CD is that there are precious few vocals. The maddening partof it is the editing. Lord knows why some things fade in, or are edited abruptly. One can readily understand Fripp's frustration with this document.
But for all its warts and blemishes, there is great stuff going on here. At times in the improv, the band is clealry circling the airport, looking for a place to land before it runs out of fuel, but at other times, it seems to leap with total abandon. Fripp once commented that the great thing about an amateur versus a professional was that an amateur, because they do it for the love of doing it, isn't aware of his limitations, and so consequently, frequently exceeds them. That is what you'll find on this disc. There are a lot of reasons to skip it in your collection if you have a fixed notion of Crimson, but if you want to hear a band working without a net, not always to success, this is a brillaint piece of work.
