Customer Reviews:
Ecstatic To Find This.......2007-01-06
Yes, they sound alot like early 80s The Cure, but let's get past that :-) This release pairs the bands 3rd and 4th albums from 1988 and 1991 respectively. Compared to their 1985 debut, 'purity', the songwriting is a bit more lush/matured but still keeps the same underpinnings of Cure-based goth/emo music but infused with some extra pop sensibilities that make the songs slightly more catchy/slightly less weighty. The two albums are pretty consistent stylistically, which makes for an enjoyable listen, rather than having a stark style change in the middle of the disc. Songs like 'burned in heaven', 'so gorgeously', and 'separation' can hold their own against any tracks off 'Pornography', while numbers like 'only for you' would fit in with the best tracks from 'head on the door'. If you're the type to get outraged when a band emulates another one, you'll likely dismiss these guys as B-grade Robert Smith fans. But if you just really like this style of music, The Essence will nicely compliment those earlier Cure records on your shelf
Awesome.......2000-12-28
The Essence- Truely Remarkable! Midnight- should rise again and give us more of these "Rare to Find" UK Beauts, such as "Snake Core" and "Sad Lovers and Giants". Find them for us Amazon! We'll love you for it.

If those cd titles mean anything to you(all early cure albums) then run(don't walk) to your nearest really good import store and offer any amount of money that they ask for the Essence albums in stock. Bass line/vocals/ and keyboards(as well as song titles) sound just a tad like the cure. Only for you and one more wasted night are the standout songs. Emotional 80'S kids will enjoy any output from midnight records.
This band Sounds like another band...........1999-04-12
The Essence, though, hard to find on the net (of all things) is very very good. If you like The Cure, a band from the 70's and 80's and now 90's, you will surely be stunned at the likeness in sound and lyric that The Essence portrays. I love all of their music and this album compliments what they are about.
