5 out of 5 stars Early Obituary: Shane MacGowan, Celtic Shaman.......2007-07-13

I am writing this review in the form of an early obituary for Pogues frontman and main songwriter Shane MacGowan, since he is one of those people everyone expects to hear is dead any day now. Shane was one of those rare souls who followed what I call the Shaman's Path, one that was trod before him by Arthur Rimbaud, Aleister Crowley, and Jim Morrison, among others. The Shaman's Path leads first to brilliant actualization of the self but finally to misery, madness, and frequently early death.

The album "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" is the Pogues' most fully realized work with MacGowan, and most of the tracks are classic pieces of Irish folk fusion. Stand-outs are the title track, a fatalistic lyric on mortal and spiritual peril laid over a rollicking rhythm and pipe arrangement; and "Fairy Tale of New York", a kind of vulgar, piano-driven Christmas carol about failed expectations in the New World, on which MacGowan duets with Kirsty MacColl.

But nothing on this album changes the fact that the Pogues' legacy, like the Doors' before them, was built on their singer's slow suicide by drink as he followed the Shaman's Path to its ultimate destination in an untimely grave.

Rest in peace, Shane, and I doubt you ever fell from grace.

Still their best album.
Good bonus tracks!
These guys rock harder at age 50 than I've ever rocked in my life.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff Either Way You Slice It!.......2007-03-14

The Pogues "If I Should Fall From Grace with God" is a masterpiece of its kind. Can not go wrong with this one. I feel a little sad that this band could not stand the test of time but I do realize that true genius is unpredictable at best and you can tell that the lead vocals is one of the type of genius that anything can happen. This is a tight band with that special flavor that comes from their side of he world. No weakness here, when these guides get going all hell breaks loose and I am looking to get drunk and buy a pack of Marlboro Reds and maybe take away the filters, that's how rowdy the s..t gets. A true pleasure to own. Ownership satisfaction do not get any better than this, can get to be the same but not better. This album stays in my world till I kick, and everytime I throw a party it definitely enters the rotation but right around the time when the party has heated up. This is no lukewarm affair and should not be considered as such. Get the Babes happy and drunk, get the dudes saturated with some high quality tap beer or whatever, really, and let loose the whole album. Stick with friends when playing the Pogues at least this way the fighting that might ensue will be in good cheer and later friendly hugs! 5 stars for the Pogues "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" What a Title, What a Record! Stay down with your bad selves, Pogues!!! Go Go Go!

5 out of 5 stars In the all-time top twenty 'rock' albums.......2007-01-30

When they first appeared, people referred to the Pogues as an 'Irish punk' outfit. Since then, I've heard them recategorized half a dozen times, but nomenclature aside, there's no disputing what the Pogues brought to music in the eighties and nineties.

Few artists communicate as effectively as Shane MacGowan, few voices in music are as immediately recognizeable as his. His lyrical gifts outpace even our most prolific songwriters. When MacGowan writes for himself, he ultimately writes for all of us.

I'm not one of those hyphenated Americans that need go back eight generations for an identity, but when I hear this music, it awakens something inside of me, something I suspect not even Ellis island can erase.

5 out of 5 stars I've Fallen, And I Can't Get Up!.......2007-01-20

The world is better place since "If I should Fall from the Grace With God" has been re-mastered and re-issued -- this is the Pogues at their roarin' best! In fact, with this re-issue you won't care if you've fallen and can't get back up-- you'll be havin' too much fun listenin' to this classic disc that has been out of circulation and missing too long on the out print lists. Fall out with this one for best of class good sounds!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Album- Eclectic and Original.......2007-06-17

Shane MacGowan's voice cuts through the title track and sets up what is a fabulous collection of songs that range from rollicking Irish/Punk to folksy ballads. Not a bad cut and just an all around great recording. The Pogues are the real deal and this is one of their best.

5 out of 5 stars Need a pick-me-up? Buy this album........2007-04-22

I don't usually review classics- works of literature or music whose greatness is so self-evident and widely acknowledged as to render any acclaim of mine as superfluous, unnecessary and probably inadequate. I mean, what could I possibly say about "The Oresteia" or "Der Ring des Nibelungen" that hasn't been said before and that would do it justice or add to the general enlightenment? Anyway, I usually find that there are more than enough people on amazon.com who feel the need to tell the world that Shakespeare is "a great writer" or that Mozart's tunes are "awesome". Such is how I viewed "If I Should Fall From Grace of God" until I surfed onto the product overview at amazon and saw that only a measly 13 people had seen fit to praise this extraordinary album. So in the interest of promoting incredible music, let me just say that this album is one of the classics. I've seen it on more than one published list of "Greatest albums of the 80s" or "Desert Island albums". This is one of those albums which make you sit up and say "Wow- I've never heard anything like this before", which is what I said when I first heard it in the early 90s. Raucous, poetic, funny, head banging, joyful, beautiful- it is the Pogues' best album and one of the all-time greats.

5 out of 5 stars Just a great damn CD and remastering!.......2007-04-13

I've loved this CD since I bought the original relase around 1990, and decided to pay some more money for the remastered version. Wow, what a job the studio did remastering it! A lot of care seems to have gone into the process, and the sound is almost three dimensional: the clarity of each instrument, the separation, the pounding bass... The highpoint for me on this CD is "Thousands are Sailing," and it's an absolute pleasure to hear it remastered.

If you love the Pogues, but already own the original release of this CD, consider repurchasing the remastered version; you'll be very pleased you did.

5 out of 5 stars This Great Band's Greatest Album.......2006-12-23

Every Shane MacGowan Pogues' album was terrific, but this one stands apart from the others. Some of their biggest hits and some of their rocking best. Not one track that falls below the category of great. I defy anybody to say one bad thing about this album. "I am Francico Vasquez Garcia..."

5 out of 5 stars No Falling From Grace, Here.......2006-09-14

I love this album! A former co-worker of mine turned me onto it in the early 90's and I will be forever grateful to him for it.
There is not one bad cut, but I especially like the title cut, Fiesta, Medley, and Turkish Song of the Damned.
One song, however, stands out above the rest - fans know what song that is - Fairytale of New York. Kirsty MacColl - I am still sad to hear of her passing a number of years back - duets with Shane MacGowan on this beautiful Christmas story tune, one that creates instant visualization in one's mind. It's an absolute favorite.
This music is a blast to listen to - upbeat, punk, rock, Irish, pub - a mix of so many different styles that it is hard to decribe. But, it gets your heart beating.
If you have never heard The Pogues before, Shane's vocals may initially catch you off guard. But, give him (and the band) a chance.
Truly different, and truly amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Sir Noel Coward is KING!.......2007-01-09

Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Caberet at its Best.......2006-07-11

This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.

5 out of 5 stars witty, classic genius.......2005-12-13

My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

    5 out of 5 stars A marvelous interpretation!.......2005-07-05

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

After three releases that fused Clash-like punk and Celtic folk, the Pogues stretch their boundaries with If I Should Fall from Grace with God. Produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Psychedelic Furs), Grace flirts with jazz, world music and even norteno--the gloriously romp-y "Fiesta" sounds as if whiskey-parched vocalist Shane MacGowan hooked up with East LA's Los Lobos. Nonetheless, this is still the Pogues, meaning that when the day is done, Grace still feels as if it was born out of the bottom of a pint of Guinness. It's gritty, wildly spirited and, in the case of the ballad "Fairytale in New York" (a duet featuring Kirsty MacColl), heartbreakingly beautiful. Another great record by one of the '80's more iconoclastic bands. --Neal Weiss

    5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2005-01-05

Though I prefer the American cover, I have to admit the European cover says it all. The Pogues. If I Should Fall from Grace with God. Spelled out in a classic font. Black and red text like a Bible. On the left, we have Spider Stacy with his western string tie, his slicked back gangster hair, and his Generation whistle. These and his direct, Clint Eastwood stare look exactly like his whistle sounds: a reverb drenched keen over Finer's spaghetti western scores. Next to him stands Andrew Ranken, looking like the displaced R&B drummer he is. He doesn't get to showoff until the next album, Peace and Love, but a close listen reveals how much of the band's energy comes from his simple floor tom and snare parts. Bottom left, Daryl Hunt and his hair. Hey, Pogues or not, it was the eighties, and his hair was nothing compared to Cait's. Phillip Chevron. The odd man out even in a group of odd men. One of the two in the band with a genuine lilt, but his with strange Broadway squeal that somehow managed to harmonize with MacGowan when it was needed. And Shane in the middle, holding himself up (we won't speculate why as some are prone to) with a bodhran. It strikes me now, in 2005, how young he looked back then, beardless and broad-eared. This well-read man had a genuine gift early, which is rare for literary talents. To his right, Terry Woods with his first full-length appearance. Founding member of Sweeny's Men, who managed to beat even Fairport into the Celtic folk-rock scene. Guitar abandoned, he grips his cittern as if it and his tux are the only things separating him from these ruffians. On bended knee, Jem "Country" Finer. You can take a boy out of the country, but I doubt anyone would tell you to take the country out of Irish music after Jem made it work. He was no Earl Scruggs, but I get the feeling even Shane learned something about songwriting from this plaid-shirt wearing former computer science teacher. And last but not least, James "Maestro" Fearnley, his beautiful Hohner stretched out. Piano accordion may be a bad choice for Irish melodies, but James had something grander in mind and, by gob, he made it lilt and bounce somehow and lifted the music higher, no matter what Shane says in hindsight.

And then the album itself. Some say it's overproduced, that Lillywhite ruined The Pogues. I don't know what I can say except listen to the first eight notes of "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" and see if you can stop there and not finish the next eight or the whole song or the whole album. I couldn't. That's how I got hooked. This is the first album I heard by The Pogues, and I have only the fondest memories for it. In other words, I'm obviously biased. With little serious competition, I claim this as my favorite album of all time. Having played celtic music for 10 years now myself, I'm still amazed to find I can learn from it in composing, arranging, and engineering to this day. Pure art. A masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars One of the true classics of the 80s... .......2004-12-04

The Bosstones, Dropkick Murphys, Black 47, Flogging Molly, and countless other bands since have been influenced by the madness of The Pogues. The lead singer Shane MacGowan's notorious reputation for drinking and drug use and actually making it through a set has overshadowed the musicians, who are as confrontational as any punk rock band. I'd put this up against London Calling and Joshua Tree (U2's producer also worked on this one) easily because it still sounds as fresh as it did over 15 years ago.

The result is classic. It's got a great beat. The title track is a punk meets Celtic explosion. Turkish Song of the Damned gives it a middle-eastern flavor. The "Fairytale of New York" is the most known off of this, with Kirsty MacColl duetting with Shane on one of the greatest Xmas songs ever written. Any song that starts off with "It was Xmas Eve babe, in the drunk tank" HAS to be good. But it's a catchy song that you will have a hard time getting out of your head for weeks. "Metropolis" is an instrumental, and "Fiesta" is an insane punk mariachi celtic clash. Irish coffee with tequila.

The Medley and Worms are the more traditional songs but done Pogues style, and "Broad Majestic Shannon" round this one out.

Not a bad song in the bunch. Not a dull moment, and this one competes with "Rum.."as greats.

5 out of 5 stars Thousands Are Sailing... to the Pogues.......2004-11-16

Shane McGowan's vocals can be an assault on the unappreciative ear, like they were on my own. But I listened closer, thank the lord. Some may compare them to other Irish/punk outfits, but who might they be? The Pogues are a mainstay, a unique and fresh(even now)Perspective on classic rock, punk, and rooted Irish songwriting. They bridged the gap between my parents' taditional Irish tunes, and my own rock prefernces, and brought a better understanding of both. I used to hate the old Irish songs, now I devour the trad. bands, Lunasa, Altan, and Dervish. I'm drawn in to my own American tastes with better perspective, and my best band, Irish as well, U2 has remained the same, yet widened my appreciation of all music. They will always be the best.

Yet through it all, the Pogues are more like the Ramones than the Chieftans(or is it the other way around?). They are more like the Bothy Band than the Clash(or is that the other way around?) Comparisons are worthless here. There are no other Pogues(although I do recomend Shane McGowan and the Popes CD "The Snake"). The tempo is strong and aggressive. "Bottle of Smoke" is an insane whirly-gig of a drunken horse bet. "Fairytale of New York" is glorious, and pitiful, a great dancing lament. "Medley" will be the most recognised, another Irish music purist called it the "heart" of the record. The heart of the record, for me, is "Thousands Are Sailing." This is an emmigrant's song, really, a thrusting and angry ballad with soul. The Brendan Behan referance is perfect. The Pogues are Irish Music Rebels.

"Essential" Pogues is more rare, but the best introduction and compilation of great Pogues songs. If you can find it, grab it!

5 out of 5 stars NEW FAN OF SHANE MACGOWAN AND THE POGUES.......2004-09-20

although i buy many things from amazon-books, movies, games for my grandson this is the first review that i have written. not because the things i bought weren't wonderful but because i think shane macgowan and the pogues are important to our culture. i just recently discovered this album which has led me to buy more albums. this is a wonderful introduction to celtic punk music and the genius of shane macgowan's writing. this album combines both "drinking" Irish songs along with very haunting Irish songs with Fairytale of New York and If I should Fall from Grace With God being my favorites. my only complaint is that i did not discover this group until now. when things were not especially good between the Irish and the English this group of young men have a place in history because they took their Irish Punk Band into Enland and gave the Irish people a reason to be proud. they are responsible for influencing a whole new wave of celtic punk music. this album is just an absolute must for any Irish-American. don't expect traditional Danny Boy-shane and the pogues come at you with hard-driving lyrics along with hard-driving banjo, mandolin, accordian, guitar, tin whistle and whatever else they could find i imagine. i never thought i would become fond of the tin whistle-mainly because i had never even heard of a tin whistle.

i feel so strongly about their influence that i have been buying albums for friends and relatives. i can now even understand every word they sing which took a little bit of patience to understand the heavy brogue!

    buy the album and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Then we raised a glass to JFK and a dozen more besides........2004-08-02

Every year around December, among the truly great Christmas songs I hear -- White Christmas and The Christmas Song, for example -- one song is always missing. In order to hear "Fairytale of New York," I have to play this CD. This, of course, is no problem. This is a terrific CD with excellent songs throughout. Highlights include "If I Should Fall from the Grace With God," the bittersweet "Thousands Are Sailing," "Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six," "Lullaby of London," and the rousing instrumental tracks. Shane MacGowan is an amazing songwriter, but even when he hasn't penned the track, his delivery carries such an amazing weight and sincerity (excellently displayed on the bands previous effort: Rum, Sodomy and the Lash's "Dirty Old Town" and "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.") It's on "Fairytale of New York" where MacGowan's writing and delivery come together perfectly. A duet with Kirsty MacColl, this song is too good not to be heard by a wider audience and not just in Irish pubs when the temperature drops. I can hardly listen to it with having a tear form in my eye and a lump in my throat. I know its been said before in the reviews, but this masterpiece of a song is alone worth the purchase of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Baroque collection - everyone should have this!.......2002-06-18

This is a remarkable collection of Baroque music. I've heard a lot of Baroque music and I am very discriminating about performance and sound quality. This set is a winner and a fantastic bargain... Somehow they've managed to choose what is truly "best" from the period (for example I've always felt Bach's Brandenburg Concertos # 2, 3, 5 were the best of the six, while 1,4,6 were relatively weaker - and lo and behold this collection includes 2,3,and 5) while missing very little if anything that "should have" been here (of course a 10 or 12 CD collection would have been even better, but you have to stop somewhere).

The performances here are excellent, and the recording quality is very high. I disagree with the person who claims this isn't "audiophile quality", because I don't think it could get much better unless it were on another medium such as SACD. I didn't particularly notice coughing on Handel's "Messiah" but Messiah fans would likely prefer a complete performance of that particular work anyway (the excerpts from Messiah here are complete pieces, but this set doesn't include the entire 2 hour or whatever Messiah). These do not sound like "outtakes", what kind of a comment is that? Somebody worked very hard to put this collection together, and they did a fantastic job (and I have zero affiliation with this, I just feel the truth as I see it should be told).

Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is presented in it's entirety (ok, it's not the entire Vivaldi Opus 8, but it is the entire Four Seasons as normally found on any "Four Seasons" CD). There are so many great works here, which a lot of people will recognize even if they didn't know the actual piece or composer (or even that it was from the Baroque era). There's even the Mouret fanfare made famous as the "Masterpiece Theater" theme music. Yes this is a great "introduction" at a great price - which might get people to explore Baroque music further, but it's also a fairly complete collection which will suit a lot of people as such (i.e. for everyone who appreciates most any type of music these works should be "essential", but also the 4 CD collection might be all that a casual listener would "need" from the Baroque era). I feel that most people would be thrilled with this set; about the only way it might have been better would be to include information about each piece and about the Baroque era in general (there is no "text" at all with this set).

2 out of 5 stars Entry level baroque.......2001-01-11

Nice cheap way to get into Baroque music. Unfortunately it's not the best recording you can get but it should be adequate enough for a non-audiophile. I've been unable to bring myself to listening to it again since I noticed that someone coughs in the background (very noticeably) during Handel's Messiah. Wonder if this is an outtakes CD.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Original East Coast Hardcore.......2006-11-26

i reviewed this earlier, and i dont want someone to miss out or not read it but BUY THIS ASAP. Cost should NOT be a issue. This is one of the most original hardcore bands out Baltimore in the 90's and does not dissappoint. Every track is incredible and different from the last. Be sure to check out former members current bands, Unyoung Heroes, Hell to Pay, and Charm City Saints. You wont be disappointed..........
