Since Ella Fitzgerald never produced a songbook of Leonard Cohen songs, Jennifer Warnes's plush 1986 tribute is the next best thing. The sleekly seductive "First We Take Manhattan" is gilded by the guitars of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robben Ford. Warnes doesn't add much to an evergreen like "Bird on a Wire," but she lays claim to the noirish title song with a confidential vocal that complements the chamber-pop arrangement. "Song of Bernadette" is a ripened gem, and the selection where Warnes lets down her refined vocal technique to reveal deep emotions. More often, Warnes is as professionally accomplished on this well-chosen set as her band of studio pros. --John Milward

Album Details

This album's worth of Leonard Cohen tunes was originally released in 1987. It remains as an audiophile's dream, as the recording is generally regarded as one of the best engineered ever. Many cite this disc as a benchmark to really put a stereo system to the test. Not to mention the fact that the performance is brilliant. Features the guitar work of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan & includes the Cohen staples 'Bird on a Wire', 'Joan of Arc (with L.C. on the guest vocal), and seven others.

5 out of 5 stars Why not ask for more?.......2007-06-18

Can you believe this album is twenty years (+) old? I can't at all. In one instant the time passing has seemed interminable, and in another instant it seems to have passed like the blink of an eye. I remember how I heard about this album. I saw Joan Baez perform at Carnegie Hall in the fall of 1987 and she sang "Famous Blue Raincoat" in her concert. I ran to a record store the next day and, appropriately fevered, bought this album. I was excited because I was a fan of Jennifer Warnes from her Arista Records days ("Right Time of the Night" and "I Know a Heartache When I See One"), and while I knew of her connection to Leonard Cohen (she is credited as background singer Jennifer Warren on Cohen's 1973 album "Live Songs"), finding her singing a full album of Leonard Cohen's material was enough to send my young soul into orbit.

My initial impression on first listening was that "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "Joan of Arc" (duet with Leonard Cohen) were the album's peak moments. Time has not diminished that belief. But the program overall is brilliant as are the performances and production. Jennifer Warnes' vocals do these songs justice. But if you listen to any of her earlier albums, you will find that she enhances the quality of all of the songs she sings. This disc is as exciting to listen to twenty years later as it was when it was first released.

P.S.: Just read that an expanded version of this album is to be released in the near future. How fortunate for us!

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best album of the 1980s.......2007-05-16

Forget every bad Jennifer Warnes top ten hit or ill-conceived duet you've ever heard.

I first bought this album, shortly after it came out, because I was a self-styled audiophile-in-training and all the boutique audiophile magazines raved on incessantly about the production quality, Warnes' voice, and only incidentally, Cohen's music and lyrics. As usual, the really astonishing thing was mostly ignored - the odd and indelible combination of Jennifer Warnes' highly accomplished and almost preternaturally controlled voice with the utter weariness and inventiveness of Cohen's lyrics, all of it put to some exquisite, adult pop music.

This album should come with a warning: "Kids, Don't Try This At Home." This really is powerful stuff about grown-up themes, emotions and experiences, told from a jaded but still slightly hopeful, adult point of view. Something uncanny happened when this album was made, a true "synergy" (God I hate that word, but...)that transforms musicians and material into something they'd never been before. Jennifer Warnes became a true artist, and Leonard Cohen became a true human being. Practically everyone I've played this CD for in the ensuing years has gone right out and bought their own copy.

I can say without exaggeration that I still listen to this CD every week, after twenty years, and I can't wear out my enjoyment of it. It still retains some reminder of the "shock of the new", and it really hasn't become dated. I'm still moved by the sweetness and the steel of Warnes' voice, and I still shake my head at the subtlety and richness of the lyrics.

Like Joni Mitchell at her height ("Blue", "For The Roses"), The Roches first two albums, Rickie Lee Jones at her best ("Pirates") and most of everything Shawn Colvin's ever done (except for most of her new album), this is one of those times when you can call popular music "art". It's also a great introduction to Warnes" later, also episodically wonderful albums ("The Hunter", "The Well").

And for those of you whose interest has been piqued, check out her website to see why the fact that this CD is out of print is maybe not such a bad thing.

4 out of 5 stars For the Love of Leonard.......2007-05-07

There are few distinctly individual voices in the realm of Jennifer Warnes,I can hear her from the soul. This oldie but goodie relights my wildsoul and need for truth in everything. Joan of Arc is five layers of love song, everyone of the songs reflect the wonderful hearts and minds of both she and Leonard CohenLoved it.

4 out of 5 stars Get this one while you can! .......2007-03-13

I bought this primarily for one song, the title track, Famous Blue Raincoat, and it is still my favorite cut on the CD. But all of the songs are worth a listen and Leonard Cohen even does a guest turn on Joan of Arc.
For those of you who are used to Cohen's deeper, masculine voice, it may be harder to find Warnes as accessable...but I actually like her rendition of Famous Blue Raincoat as much as the Cohen original. Listen closely and you'll hear how she takes his songs and makes them unique, not just copies of his.

5 out of 5 stars Good music, plain and simple.......2007-03-13

Never heard of this CD, only read reviews about how great the sound is. Wow, I was blown away. Wonderful soundstage and the dynamics are out of this world. I'm not too keen on this genre of music, but this CD is still a must have for any lover of good music.

FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT Is A Gift From Artist To Artist, September 4, 2003
Imagine a CD that combines one of America's greatest living singers with one of America's greatest living songwriters. The results, you would imagine, would be nothing short of brilliant! And, brilliant is the best way to describe the quintesential Jennifer Warnes Album, "FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT-The Songs Of Leonard Cohen". Rarely has there been a finer coupling of artists within the audio medium-Leonard Cohen's words and music seem to have been written specifically with Jennifer Warnes in mind, so perfect is the fit between writer and singer. The CD opens with a punch, with the biting powerhouse "First We Take Manhattan". From this plateau, we are soothed with the classic "Bird On A Wire", an oft-recorded tune from the 1970's, which is given new life and relevance in this interpretation. The title track, "Famous Blue Raincoat" is more confessional than pop song, executed in half-spoken, half-sung tones, and treated with the poetic reverence it so deserves. The two artists combine forces on the album's stand-out cut "Joan of Arc" and the result is nothing less than chilling. "Myself, I long for love and light/ But must it come so cruel/ Must it burn so bright" Cohen and Warnes sing in "Joan of Arc". This is as much the artistic interpretation of St. Joan's last thoughts as it is a treatise on the modern-day human condition. This magnificent combination of music and poetry not only enthralls with its beauty, but makes the listener think. Rounded out by such other works as "Song of Bernadette" and "A Singer Must Die", "FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT" starts out strong and gains momentum as it progresses. Aside from the fact that this recording is so technologically advanced that it set a new standard by which other CD's are now measured, this album is a rare and important work of two artists at the height of their powers. It is a gift from writer to singer, from singer to writer, and we, the listeners, are so much the richer.

    5 out of 5 stars Exquisite interpretations.......2006-02-17

This album was released at a time when Cohen was almost forgotten, about seven years before the tribute albums I'm Your Fan and Tower Of Song would spur renewed interest in his oeuvre. Warnes' interpretations are always graceful and moving. She understands Cohen's music well, having done backing vocals on some of his albums like Various Positions, and she covers his songs with loving dedication. My favorites include Aint No Cure For Love (from Cohen's I'm Your Man), Coming Back To You (from Various Positions), Came So Far For Beauty (from Recent Songs) and of course the formidable Joan Of Arc where Cohen himself sings some of the verses. Her voice is the perfect vehicle for his poetic lyrics of romantic longing and despair, and my only complaint is that I would have loved to hear her interpretations of Suzanne and Sisters Of Mercy too.

4 out of 5 stars Spacious recording, Viennese charm, grand selection.......2004-11-06

Although this disc can in no way compete with the musicianship and the atmospherics on Willi Boskovsky's New Year concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic, it is nonetheless praiseworthy and recommendable. Ondrej Lenard has proved often enough on disc that he is a fine conductor, and whenever one sees 'Festival Orchestra' on a CD label, one knows that the recording was (probably) made using musicians specially selected for this occasion. The thin Naxos booklet gives no details whatsoever, so it is anyone's guess who is really playing here. Nevertheless, the result is good: The recording is a good deal more direct and spacious than on many other early Naxos discs (this one was recorded in January 1988), and the playing (Strauss is taken at a comfortable speed) is rather attractive with a good deal of Viennese charm about it, despite being recorded in Bratislava in Slovakia. And the Waltz selection is grand: here are all those tunes that many of us grew up with and have always loved

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Performances of Delightful Music.......2004-10-16

This bargain-priced CD is a perfectly acceptable recording of Strauss Waltzes, and contains some of the most well-known ones. If you wanted one recording of Strauss Waltzes, this would be an ideal choice.

The parties and popular dance music of the 19th century were different than our own party music, of course. But don't let this throw you off. Classical music, in every category, whether serious or festive, is always beautiful and recommendable. If you are a fan of classical music, and also enjoy partying, Strauss waltzes are always the best medicine. His jovial tunes, charming, endearing, playful and romantic, have captivated people for more than a century now. The greatest and most famous of all Johann Strauss waltzes (Johann II) is his Blue Danube Waltz- used in such films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, and epitomizes the waltz form. Other waltzes that must be heard, for their elegance and their charm, are Roses From The South, the waltz-overture from his operetta Die Fledermaus (Strauss operettas each have at least one waltz or polka, and I highly recommend u listen to them), The Artists' Life, Vienna Blood, Tales From The Vienna Blood, Voices Of Spring and the Emperor's Waltz. This collection has a great variety of Strauss waltzes that are sure to lift your spirits and make you long for long, romantic evenings in old Vienna.

          3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2005-06-05

There are many better renditions of the “Blue Danube” on the market than this rather smooth and uncontured one from Slovakia, so if you are merely looking for this Strauss super-hit, it would be advisable to go elsewhere (try Willy Boskovsky with the Vienna Philharmonic on Decca). But taken as a whole, this is still quite a pleasing disc, the nine numbers here having been, as I can only assume, culled from the Complete Johann Strauss Edition published by Marco Polo at full-price. The CSR Symphony Orchestra, directed by Ondrej Lenard, makes up for the uninspired opening with fair renditions of the “Pizzicato Polka” and the “Tausendundeine Nacht” waltz, followed later by acceptable versions of “Frühlingsstimmen” and the “Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka”. The playing is not always brilliant, but the overall impression is quite good, especially as the recorded sound is better than on a lot of early Naxos discs (the recordings here were made in 1988 and 1989): if you listen at a slightly higher volume than usual, you will notice that there is much detail captured, with some excellent bass, and only occasionally does the empty recording venue lead to that “cavernous” sound that is so often heard on Naxos. One of the most interesting pieces on this disc is the Overture to Strauss’ opera “Indigo und die 40 Räuber”, here played by the CSSR State Philharmonic from Kosice, directed by Alfred Walter. I have had occasion in the past to criticize Kosice recordings for Naxos, but here both the playing and the sound are superior to the Bratislava CSR SO; the Quadrille from “Die Fledermaus” is also given a spirited rendering by the same orchestra, and it is only the waltz “Wo die Citronen blüh’n” which fails to deliver the excitement that one can expect from Strauss. The last piece on the disc, the “Morgenblätter” (morning newspapers!), is here played by the Polish State Philharmonic, directed by Johannes Wildner, in a more than acceptable rendition in an acoustic that is obviously better than at either of the two Slovakian venues. All in all a mixed bag that can give a good deal of pleasure without in any way being ideal.

5 out of 5 stars Strauss with style and grace.......2006-03-01

This CD does not feature a famous orchestra like the Vienna Philharmonic, but it does have great playing with wonderful style and plenty of grace. The music sounds right, every phrase seems just perfect. However, this CD is priced too high. For just 50 cents more, you can get this CD and another one with more great waltzes. It is well worth the extra searching time.
