DJ Shadow, a.k.a. Josh Davis, could be credited with bringing newfound introspection to the gloating sounds of hip-hop. Condensed with urban oscillations and scatological beats, Endtroducing shutters with eclectic samples and aural montages that reach beyond the constraints of hip-hop style. Enhancing the mix with fundamentals of rock, soul, funk, ambient, and jazz, the modern fusions fail to go unnoticed, even by the casual listener. While most of the tracks are compiled by layering samples from vinyl treasures found in used-record bins, the production quality of the mosaic is unmatched. Darkened melodies carry throughout the album with its eye on the end of the tunnel. The narration samples come from numerous sources and keep the listener involved and waiting for resolution. With a message as fragmentary as an overheard conversation, Endtroducing conveys no apparent conclusion, but begs the mind, body, and soul for some rewind. --Lucas Hilbert

"The Music Comes Through Me...".......2007-07-06
Listening to this now sounds pretty much like it did listening to it when it was first released. And that will be over ten years ago.
I try to avoid cliches but sometimes they are exactly that for a particular reason. In other words they're right. Okay, this still sounds like music beamed down from above. It sounds other-worldly, it sounds elsewhere...very, very different.
One of my friends is almost exclusively into dance music, has seen DJ Shadow live, and yet still can't quite get into this. My own take on it is that it's a DJ album you can't actually dance to. I mean you could if you wanted to but that's not quite the point. It's far more important than that.
It's just the sound of it all. And this is bass-heavy sampled heaven. 'Building Steam With A Grain Of Sand' builds to a scenario where it sounds like the tinkling ivories are battling the angels of heaven or your imagination whereas 'The Number Song' sounds simultaneously like it's old school excitement, something approaching the here and now, and the very future. Scratching and the skattering, clattering drums. Just excitement. And things like trying to remember that this is all sampled music. It is not live. Just very much alive. 'Changeling' has swampy drums drowned in some muddy production before it takes off and that scratching arrives followed by that bass and then...
Listening to this now I'm struck by how fearless it is, how it taps into a neglected part of you. How it just is. How I struggle sometimes to believe there could actually be a mass market for this. For something this challenging.
You may want stand out tracks but if that's the case, i think I'm struggling. Music this spontaneous (and yes, I know it isn't and there's the trick, the very height of the artistry here...)washes over you as a whole. You feel it or you don't but you hardly worry about which track you're listening to.
Having said that though, if you did want moments, that tension in music when things just work, then you might, just might go for 'Stem/Long Stem'. It soothes and then it builds and then...
'Midnight In A Perfect World' is possibly the most perfect song title ever but i'm still stunned that the song itself doesn't disappoint. A most mellow start until the drums arrive but then keyboards soothe and soulful vocals double that effect. An undercurrent of scratching and repeated mantra-like vocals. Midnight. Midnight. Midnight.
I'm probably more stunned though by 'Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain'. That bass. That bass...And then those drums. And the spectral keyboards at the end. Where does he get all this stuff from? And what happens next? And it goes without saying that we will never have an inkling as to how he then does what he does and makes it all fit together.
'What Does Your Soul Look Like' is definitely the most perfect song title ever and as a song surfaces twice here. You decide which version you prefer.
When people talk about an album being groundbreaking they usually mean 'worthy' and not necessarily something you'll want to listen to over and over again. This though is groundbreaking in the real, the true sense of the word...things beyond. Just listen and expect to be swept away.
The beginning and the end of something not yet heard.
In Car Freestyle Session Instrumentals (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-05-20
What I like about DJ Shadow's album "Entroducing..." is that his music blends in the music of jazz & hip hop. It seems like everytime I'm listening to this album, I'm always driving, stuck in traffic on I-75/85. So to help pass the time, I always drop a rhyme to some of the beats on here. And I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I'm pretty good at it. For all you rappers/lyricists out there, don't tell me "Why Hip Hop Sucks in '96" doesn't make you start flowing. "What Does Your Soul Look Like" is another song to get at.
DJ Shadow really shows the art of turntablism and blending vinyl records and sampling (and I mean at it's best). You really have to understand the type of sound that he is trying to create on every track, and it flows real nice. Most of the track vibe real well, something that a lot of instrumental tracks don't have that much, if at all. "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt" is one of the tracks that flow so easily
There were some tracks that I weren't feeling too much. "The Number Song" really didn't stand out to me because of it's high energy and high live sounding effect. Also, I personally thought some of the songs were a minute too long (mostly those two song in one track songs). At a point, I was like, "Damn, how long is this song???". Also I'm mad that "Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96" is only 35 seconds long. In my opinion, that is one of the best beats on the album. But thats all the bad things I can think of.
"Entroducing..." is one of the best instrumental tracks you'll hear. At a time in '96 when hip hop was changing, this would have been a breath of fresh air to hear (espically when people were starting to loose their origonality). This album blows The Outsider as well as Funky Skunk away. There are no vocals on here, except for the samples. This is just pure music to vibe to real easily. Whether if you're driving in traffic, or chillin' in your bed, or if your preference is jazz, or hip hop, this is one album that you will enjoy. Peace.

I wish that I could have sampled this selection prior to it's purchase. There may be some entries that might be good for sampling, but I got no goosebumps listening to it. DJ Shadow has some wonderfully creative grooves out there.....just not on this disc.
An Outstanding Album!.......2006-10-05
I got this album about 2 years ago at a mall. What made me get this great album was after hering a song of a music channel playing a song titled:"Building Steam With A Grain of Salt". After hearing that awesome song, I instantly knew I had to get the cd. I listen to every song on the cd and all are very goog indeed. Right now, "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt", "What Does Your Soul Look Like" (Part 4), and "Midnight In A Perfect World". Im sure I left out a couple, but still, all of them are great. Recommendeed to anyone. Enjoy this great artifact.
Sonic Alchemy .......2006-09-01
This record is a perfect example of how a sampler can be used as a instrument to make a album. Midnight In A Perfect world is my favorite track on this album and is probably one of the 25 best songs written or composed in the 20th century. If you see this record missing from someone's collection or know someone who hasn't listened to it , you need to step up and turn them on to it.

The sequel to 2002's Verve Remixed follows and improves upon the original's formula; take material from the storied vaults at Verve Records and let top DJs of the modern era have at them. Featuring an impressive roster of dance artists like Miguel Migs, Koop, and Fila Brazillia, the trick is matching DJ with jazz standard in a way that compliments both. It's a tough chore, given the classics involved and the need to do them justice. On Sarah Vaughan's "Whatever Lola Wants," Gotan Project manage the task with distinction, filtering rustic and romantic accordions through the song's lusty machinations. Astute choices are required, like Mondo Grosso's decision to build a solid thump out of just the central melody of Archie Shepp's "Blues For Brother George Jackson." Sometimes, the best thing to do is get out of the way; Mr. Scruff's Soul Party Mix of "Do What You Wanna" only adds some background party noise to Ramsey Lewis' ripping keyboard solo. VR2 doesn't hit the mark every time, but the combinations that work accomplish what only the best dance music does--they crumble the walls between genres and encourage us all to get down together. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
Five stars for one song.......2007-07-04
this CD is hit or miss. Mostly miss for me. However there is a big but in here. Big enough to give it five stars. If you are an Ella fan you have to part with the cash to hear what has been done with Slap that Bass. That one song is worth the price of admission
Volume 2.......2007-04-10
The first "Verve/Remixed" focused on Divas, mostly those of the Jazz genre. This disc deviates from that enjoyable formula by expanding to female pop singers, male vocalists, and instrumentalists.
VERVE/REMIXED 2 consists of 14 newly remixed songs. Disc packaged in clear jewel case; total running time: 72:08. Booklet does not include information about the original recordings (not even songwriting credits).
There are once again two remixes of Nina Simone recordings. There are also two Ella Fitzgerald recordings remixed. Several instrumental tracks are remixed - I don't get the point of that, but they are included here.
This sequel is not nearly as good as the original.
THE Verve.......2007-02-07
overall great album, my favorite of the series...
just the right tempo and selection of artists make this a perfect album for a chillout but up-beat enough session without falling asleep
Another good package.......2005-12-21
This is the second remixed CD from the Verve Remixed series. These tracks are still well mixed but I do find a few tracks which are quite noisy (a bit over-the-top). Still, I think there are enough good dance tracks to keep this CD in your stereo for sometime. If you are asking for more, then try getting the 'Complete Verve Remixed Box-Set' which comes in a package of four (3 + 1) CDs.
Yes!.......2005-11-06
So I don't listen to this kind of music very often, and I apologise if I'm being naiive or ignorant, but this is an extremely good CD. The first 5 songs are some of the best music I've heard in a long time, and I will definitely be picking up Remixed 3 after hearing this.

To remain relevant after a decade in the music industry is rare indeed; for a dance act, it's virtually unique. Singles 93-03 ably demonstrates how the Chemical Brothers have managed it. Having first carved a reputation as DJs the Dust Brothers in the early 1990s, the two history graduates narrowly avoided calling themselves the London Dust Explosion before spearheading big beat, becoming a huge live draw, collaborating with Noel Gallagher and having Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis play "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" at his wedding. It's been 10 years of fun, frolics, and gigantean left-field beats for Ed Simmons and Tom Rowland and, as this faultless singles collection testifies, continual reinvention.
From the seething siren, pounding breaks, breathy vocals and spellbinding post-acid electronica of album opener "Song to the Siren" to the ingenious collaboration with the Flaming Lips, "The Golden Path," Tom 'n' Ed have somehow managed to carve tracks that appeal equally to radio, clubs, and the live arena. Alongside the cement-cracking bass of "Leave Home" and "Block Rockin' Beats" comes the high-inducing sonic debauchery of "The Private Psychedelic Reel" and dancefloor filler "Star Guitar," to name but a few of the many highlights. Ingenious, boundary-baffling stuff, this compilation offers a hypnotic historical tour of one of the most creative careers in dance music. --Christopher Barrett

Prime Compilation.......2006-07-13
A great starting point for anyone looking to discover the Chemical Brothers. Nearly all tracks succeed at rounding out this retrospective of the Brothers' body of work from the 90s. The one or two that do not reach the energy or wow of the remaining cuts do so marginally at most, and bear in mind this is my subjective take. Still this is a great compilation; after listening to this stellar package, the CB's "Push the Button" is that much more enjoyable.
Great delivery great product.......2006-03-02
Good CD for the price. Did not have all the singles I was hoping for, but can't beat the price.
More than Just a Dance Band.......2005-09-24
Sure, these guys have pumped out many a dance floor filler. This collection of incredible singles is an undeniable testament to that. Buy this one for the singles, and the extra disc of rare-ish material. Then prepare to fall in love with Chemical Brothers, one of the most brilliant duos in popular music. Hopefully this "Best Of" will only be a jumping off point for the curious. Digging a little deeper into their albums you will find bits of heady psychedelia, rushes of shimmering electronica, tough slabs of hip hop, moody ballds, guest vocalists galore, and more than just a few curveballs thrown your way.
Get it while you can!!.......2005-01-06
Ok. The songs included in this compilation are the most know ones. The unmissable ones. What I liked a lot about this album was that they sort of made special edits to the song, which doesn't meant they cut parts or something. I loved how they selected them and put them together. It is perfect. Plus, this singles collection has 2 new tracks: The Golden Path (can be funny and beautiful at the same time) and Get Yourself High (a very distorted and electric hiphop-like song). The real reason why I got this Cd was because of the bonus album. It has 2 live tracks (so incredible because they are amazing and very original when they go live), some unreleased tunes and mixes, and includes other tracks that were singles. It's a wonderful tracklisting. If you have liked what the Chems have done in the past, you're gonna be happy with this cd, just like me. I am a fan, and I'm satisfied with this singles album.
I'd never heard of the Chemical Brothers.......2004-10-20
A friend recounted that he was searching through the personals one day when he came across the ad of a woman who claimed to be a Chemical Bros. fan. He was thrilled and I was mystified -- who are the Chemical Brothers?
And now it's love.
For casual listeners of electronica/dance music, there is plenty in this compilation to make it worth the price. Star Guitar is the kind of music you want to play when you're racing down a dark highway on your way into the city, Get Yourself High is head-bop fantastic and both Loops of Fury and Chemical Beats sounds like they should have made it onto a Matrix soundtrack.
In short, this is a great compilation for the Johnny-come-lately Chemical Brothers fan.

Customer Reviews:
A little disappointed.......2007-04-25
I am giving it three stars, not because it is a bad mix, the mixing is very good however based on what I usually buy I was a little disappointed. The first CD I listened to just once and will be dated very fast as you know the originals of the songs and well I was tired of hearing the pop versions anyway. The second cd is the better one in my opinion. I did not care too much for the opening tracks but it eventually gets into a nice groove but with only 12 tracks I was left wanting for more. A decent purchase for those getting into this type of music but I have strayed away from the heavy vocal tracks as I am a passive listener (in my car, on airplanes, waiting in the bank, etc) and have been spoiled on Tiesto and Armin. I am not regretting this purchase but it would not be on heavy rotation on my ipod or CD player.
Thrive Mix 03 vs. Ultra Dance 8.......2007-04-06
Ultra Records used to be my pinnacle of Dance Music. I found myself always waiting for the next Ultra Weekend and Ultra Dance. Since ThriveDance has come to the table I am excited to say I have found a new love! ThriveMix03 was the best dance compilation I've heard in a long time. As I am a huge fan of POP music I was excited to see my favorite artists mixed with underground artists like Peter Lutz and September. Since my first Thrive purchase of ThriveMix03, I have since gone out to purchase the rest of the ThriveMix catalog and I have to say I am yet to be disappointed. Good Work Thrive! I am ready and waiting for your next release!!!!
SO MUCH FUN & SUPERIOR TO ULTRA DANCE 08.......2007-02-07
If you are looking for a great album to work out to, to listen before heading out to the club, or to throw on at a party, this is the perfect CD for you. And if you are a fan of both dance and rhythmic pop music like me, then you'll definitely fall in love with this CD.
I've been a long time buyer of the Ultra Dance series, and I also now have all three ThriveMix CD's in my collection. Overall, I have to say that the ThriveMix discs have stronger tracklists (thrivemix 2 had near identical pop hits as the ultra weekend 2 CD, but I felt that the more `underground' dance songs on thrivemix 2 were stronger and mixed much more nicely), and the thrivemix CDs are sequenced and mixed better. Thank god that Ultra Dance 08 and thrivemix 3 don't have near identical tracklists like thrivemix2 and ultra weekend 2 did. I own Ultra Dance 08 and I have to say that thrivemix 3 has logged in more time in my stereo- it's just a much stronger CD in terms of track selection, sequencing and flow.
My favorite tracks on ThriveMix03 are Cassie, Nelly Furtado, Jewel, September, Brooke Hogan, Basement Jaxx, Gabriel & Dresden, Supafly, Inc., Fatboy Slim, and Oakenfold. I had never heard those remixes of Cassie, Nelly Furtado, Brooke Hogan, and Fatboy Slim before...great choices. The rest of the songs I hadn't heard period, but I am so glad to discover them. That Gabriel & Dresden track is awesome, and I love the Phil Collins sample in Supafly,Inc.
On a side note: others here have complained that Disc 1 isn't mixed well, and I have to say that as a person who mixes himself, it is because there are so many pop/rock hits that have been included on disc one, and these songs can be impossible to mix together seamlessly like you can with two more traditional dance songs (like Tali & Meth and Reina on Disc 2).
Overall, just a really fun CD all the way through and a superior album compared to Ultra Dance 08

still shadow..........2007-07-08
all of you that think Shadow "sold out" or made a terrible album, you are obviously not listening to the actual music contained within this disc; you are just paying attention to the lyrical content. Shadow is a producer, not a rapper. keep this in mind and actually listen to the production on this album: it's sick. nobody can touch him when it comes to production, digging, sampling, arrangement, etc. if you aren't a fan of Shadow anymore because you don't like this album, then good riddance, we don't need people like you in the Shadow fan base anyway. also keep in mind that these are his roots and he wanted to make an album focused on Hyphie. i don't really care for this genre of music, but i can still appreciate this album for the masterful piece of work that it is.
A surprise on many levels.......2007-05-21
Okay first things first if you do not like hip hop/rap and you are looking for something reminiscent of Endtroducing or Private Press stop reading and move on.
I am a DJ Shadow/UNKLE fan. I have all of the albums and enjoy them all in their own ways. Now if you are looking for a an album that has a little hip hop/rap and is broad in the genres it delves into then perhaps this album is for you.
Musically, for the most part, this album will remind you that you are listening to DJ Shadow. It is a well balanced album which encompasses rock, blues, hip hop/rap and down tempo electronica. I will say that if when you hear hip hop/rap you think of MCs like Mos Def or Talib Kweli then this might not be for you. It is a bit closer to people like Trick Trick or the Eminem tracks where he collaborates with other hip hop artists.
Fo DJ Shadow fans this album, I think, is a must. This will help you gain a more understanding of what DJ Shadow is about musically. Touching into all of the styles that he seems to be influenced from and listens to. Which brings me to the order of the CD. The transitions overall are good. They lead you right into the next track.
In short DJ Shadow will surprise you with this album. He will bring on a roller coaster of sound which will leave you wanting to go again. Sure this is not your typical DJ Shadow. I like to think it is a bit more evolved. A blend of music bridging many genres and tempos. Dj Shadow and music fans apply within.
DJ Shadow went Hyphy........2007-03-30
Please understand that as far as Hyphy music goes, this is probably AMAZING. I just hate Hyphy. In fact, it's a furthering of the cheerleader rap that was made popular by people like 50 Cent who learned that it's easier to make money with somewhat simple beats, even simpler rhymes, and a "ghetto image" than it is to go with hard hitting quality rhymes (like he used to come with back in the day).
Respectfully, I understand why Shadow would go there with this album. He IS from the Bay Area, and this IS the type of music that has been coming out of the bay recently. Yes, you could say he was trying to make the best Hyphy album ever, and who am I to say this isn't it? The point I would make is that as opposed to following trends, historically, Shadow has CREATED them. Seriously. Endtroducing was GROUNDBREAKING. It was amazing, expansive, and an amazing composition. Does this album have issues because of that? Absolutely. Why? Because when you make something that can be considered "the standard" for music to come in your first album, then you're setting yourself up for failure in your sophomore set.
There are some good tracks on this album. I really liked "Backstage Girl" featuring Phonte of Little Brother, and the "instrumental" tracks had some serious promise, but Hyphy is not my gig and about 70% of this album is "hyphy" by definition. If that's your thing, then my opinion means nothing to you, and you should buy this album. If you're hoping for Endtroducing II (I wasn't even hoping for that, to tell the truth, but respectfully, that album's greatness makes this album seem horrible to me in comparison), then you're going to have to look somewhere else, cause that just isn't here. (Hell, you're better off with any of the RJD2 albums instead if you're looking for anything like that and I wouldn't even put them on that level, either)...
So I guess the bottom line is that I didn't like this album. I wouldn't recommend it unless I knew your tastes were based along the "hyphy" trend...
Ouch...........2007-02-24
I just wrote a great review for this album, but my computer decided to quit unexpectedly so I'll make this short. Find a way (legally ;) to only acquire these tracks- 2, 8, 9, 12-15. They're great and reminiscent of his deep moods and tastes for the ethereal. However, if you're unfortunate enought to hear any of the others, you'll want to have your brain whiped clean of any memory of it.
Basically DJ Shadow, who I used to never be able to shut up about, now has a bunch of parasites (sadly, even one is named "Droop-E," weak) clinging to him and begging him for exposure. Somehow legend Q-Tip wanted to involve himself, which I'll never understand. So anyway, since DJ Shadow is a nice guy, he took 15 minutes to make tracks for them to rap over. This explains the rest of the album. So you have my advice, and I hope your curiousity or disbelief will not lead you to explore beyond the tracks I've listed, as you may fall off a cliff and into the dark endless chasm of wasted talent (although you can say hello to dj shadow, I hear he's down there somewhere trying to climb back out).
DJ Shhhh... Who is this?.......2007-02-18
The intro gives an ominous prelude, interesting even if it was a bit long but written instead of sampled. Good examples might be Crystal Method (Dark Crystal) or Dieselboy (Ghost in the Machine) or umm.... all of Endtroducing by someone this guy should listen to. What happened next was all over the map. Maybe he wanted to do something totally different with collaborations? The raps are tired and churned out. The few instrumentals are slow and boring, no where near as developed as one can expect from a DJ such as Shadow. Then a few background indie singing mellow tracks. Nothing memorable. Seconds after I listened to the third track I wanted my money back. I gave it a little more time and was mildly rewarded with filler that isn't too bad. But filler shouldn't be a reward. All I can say is you can impress some of the people all the time, all of the people some of the time but you can't venture so far out from what is your creative genius and expect anyone to follow with great praise. Oh yeah, he calls this album The Outsider, should've paid more attention to metaphors.

Customer Reviews:
Better than the originals .......2007-01-29
I own several DJ Krush albums and love his dark, brooding, trip-hop influenced style. But with Stepping Stones, I found the perfect DJ Krush listening experience. This album is darker and more sinister than his original work. The first CD, Lyricism, is essentially a hip-hop/trip-hop album featuring a number of guest vocalists, including The Roots, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, Anticon, and others. The overall quality of CD #1 is so good that it's hard for me to name any favorite tracks, but #8 and #11 just blow me away. The second CD, Soundscapes, features haunting instrumental remixes of some of Krush's best originals. Again, the overall quality is great, so I won't name any favorite tracks. With this double-CD album, you get two distinctly different listening experiences. Call it hard/soft, active/passive, whatever. The first CD kicks you in the teeth, the second hypnotizes you.
One CD hot, the other not as much........2007-01-23
First, I am a HUGE Krush fan, and have all of his other works (less some singles and foreign releases).
This is a double CD, which is always a plus.
- First CD is LYRICISM, as the name suggests, all the tracks are lyrics, mostly rap/hip-hop. The music is decent, but not up to my expectation of Krush. The remixes of wonderful songs from other CD's (the originals) are not nearly as good, if not lame. I was a little disappointed with this CD. Tracks range from 'meh' to OK.
- Second is SOUNDSCAPES, as the name suggests, this is ambient/chill. In my opinion, this is WAY better than the first CD. Great music (track 12 annoys me, though) overall. If you have a very, very good 2-channel system (not computer speakers, not an iPod dock, but a proper 2-channel audio system), the last track on this CD is a blast (lots of distorted, warped, and bizarre sounds that are a blast to hear).
I hold Krush to a very high, if not unfair, standard (one he has earned by making what I consider some of the best music out there) - and this album falls just a little short. Not bad, but certainly not his best.
I would only recommend this CD to a Krush fan who already has most or all of his other works (DO NOT FORGET TO GET 'Cold Krush Cuts'!!!) and wants more - it satisfies this need perfectly, but certainly should not be someones first experience to DJ Krush.
From the master of the wheels of steel...........2007-01-16
A collection of his best works on 2 discs, remixed, touched up...plenty of outstanding hip hop and dnb beats, with jazz, scratches, cuts and breaks sprinkled throughout, reflecting the wide array of Krush's skills and progression as a musical artist. disc 1 has rappers performing on each track, underground performers that aren't pop but loaded with talent, krush using his skills to bring the best from each. disc 2 are his tracks, the stellar diversity showing whatever interests held krush at that time of creation, destroying any myths of typecasting.
the cd case is well designed, almost entirely black, including the cd's. very understated and subtle overall, sending a message of mystery and strength. removing the cd cover, the booklet unfolds to reveal lyrics for all the tracks off disc 1, a nice treat...this item is very difficult to by in store (i went to virgin megastore) so buy online if possible.
Cold Krushin' ; DJ Krush has arived!.......2006-12-28
Underground legend DJ Krush delivers on this self-mixed compilation of some of his finest work. Divided into two perfectly cohesive cd's, this collection gives us a sampling of his stellar career. Whether you are just becomming familiar with Krush, or down since day one, this is a must purchase for any fan.
Unreal.......2006-09-14
I'm a huge Krush fan & this is definitely his best work in years. This album is ridiculous in its atmosphere. I was a bit disappointed with his last couple of albums, but this more than makes up for it...I think it's his best since Kakusei.
If you are a fan at all, pick this up...you're in for a real treat.

Album Description
Looping and multi-tracking his voice onstage to create his own live backing tracks, Kid Beyond layers his transcendent singing voice over his own beatboxing and vocal instrumentation. The result is a riveting brew of pop-electronica that has drawn comparisons to Gorillaz, Moby, Fatboy Slim, Thievery Corporation and M.I.A. His live show has been called "Amazing
truly impressive" (Keyboard Magazine); "Deep, powerful
" (SF Weekly); "Fiercely charismatic
truly mesmerizing" (East Bay Express); "Kid Beyond's mouth is something you must hear." (Remix Magazine).
Kid Beyond's diverse vocal talents converge on his debut EP, Amplivate. Produced by alt-hip-hop wizard Alias (Anticon Records), San Francisco's The Rondo Brothers (Dan the Automator) and LA's Gabriel Mann, Amplivate casts Kid Beyond's soulful singing voice and conscious lyrics in a sea of crunchy break-beats, dubby bass-lines, wobbly turntables, swirling strings, bleepy bloops, distorted guitars
all produced from his mouth.
Kid Beyond's career has exploded in the past year. An endorsement video for Ableton Live (the leading music-looping computer software) - of Kid Beyond demonstrating his live-looping techniques in his kitchen - became one of the Web's most viral videos of 2005. Director JJ Abrams (Alias/Lost) requested a Kid Beyond version of the Mission Impossible theme for the MI:3 DVD. VH1 brought him onto their reality show "Supergroup" to fill in for Jason Bonham as a human drum kit, appearing alongside Ted Nugent, Skid Row's Sebastian Bach and Anthrax's Scott Ian. A profile on Kid Beyond landed in heavy rotation on Al Gore's Current TV cable channel. Electronica pioneer BT flew him to LA to collaborate on an all-vocal dance track. Hip-hop / spoken-word legend Sage Francis put one of Amplivate's tracks (the Buddhist-blues anthem "I Shall Be Free") on an upcoming compilation CD.
Having shared the stage with Keane, Lyrics Born, The Coup, Michael Franti & Spearhead, String Cheese Incident, Amon Tobin, KRS-One, Buckethead, The Wailers and Particle, Kid Beyond has attracted an intensely loyal following of techno-Burners, hip-hop heads, jam-band fans, MySpace kids and bloggers worldwide. This "underground legend" is not going to stay underground for long.
Customer Reviews:
Fresn.......2007-01-09
An intresting new direction for music from a very talented artist. Kid beyond provides four exellent tracks. the only failing is that there are only four songs on this disc. I was very hungry for more
Phenomenal!.......2006-12-21
I also just saw Kid Beyond open for Imogen Heap in Milwaukee, and even though she's incredible herself I half expected the openers to be lame. I missed the first one (Levi Weaver) but walked in to Kid Beyond... his incredible beats and twists are completely breathtaking. He has this astounding power on stage that you can't stop watching. The way he uses his hands is brilliant, and makes you want to jump up on stage with him. He assisted in a number of songs for Imogen Heap with background effects, and the raw talent of this guy was not lost in the wave of adoration for Immi - another impressive attribute. Although it's definitely a must have cd, it's no lie that you have to see him live to get the full effect. I give this guy 5 stars!
I Second That!.......2006-12-19
I also just saw Kid B open for Imogen in Milwaukee - WOW! I swear, the whole crowd had their mouths hanging open in awe and amazement at this dude's raw talent! Cool cd, especially once you realize that he's making every sound from his own mouth. Definitely take the opportunity to see this guy live for the ultimate experience of a lifetime! I'm in love!
Amazing!.......2006-11-23
I just got back from seeing Kid Beyond open for Imogen Heap. This dude blew my mind. I've never seen something so amazing in my life! The album captures his beautiful voice and delicious beats but you have to see him live to get the whole experience. I swear to you, every sound that you hear on this record came out of his mouth. It's just this amazing man and his looping machine. Buy the CD and find out when he is coming to your town. Do not miss it! I promise you won't be disappointed.

Impulsive! Reworked Review.......2006-07-04
Some excellently remastered and remixed Jazz Tunes. Good for chilling on a summers day or for MP3 listening. Some tunes however are a little hazy and 'out there'. Definately worth a purchase if you are into something out of the mainstream!
Excellent.......2006-06-07
This album takes jazz standards and does a masterful job of remixing them in a contemporary style. If you are a fan of either jazz or electronica, you can't go wrong with this. Highly recommended.
Excellent and You Get Exactly What the Title of the CD Promises.......2006-02-02
This CD might disappoint those who have the Verve Unmixed series since those CD's are more pop/accessible and they make for a cool, hip party CD - old favorites that everyone already knows merely updated to the 21st century.
This is not really that kind of a party CD unless most of your parties are of the revolutionary kind :-)
These tracks are less pop/standard jazz that was already revolutionary and a bit belligerent in its day - though of course - cool and hip it its own right ... now updated to the 21st century with trip hop beats, they still stand the test of time. The tracks are all interesting, intriguing and still sound un-compromised and unbending to the whims of music fashion.
This CD is not for everyone but if you like your jazz with an unvarnished edge, and updated with splashes of trip hop and acid jazz - then you're in for a treat.
About the only disappointment is the low number of tracks.
Just plain fun. .......2006-01-04
Came across this disc tonight in a local record shop and popped it in my CD player. I actually took the long way home because I couldn't get enough of the first two tracks. Let's hope there are subsequent releases! Fans of Verve and Saint Germain (and I know many) will be pleased...
reworked but not revolutionary..........2005-11-20
oh boy, why do I keep buying these things. You'd think I would have learned my lesson after three volumes of Verve Remixed. But no, I keep thinking somehow there will be a great Jazz/Electronica remix album and that this might be it. With originals by Mingus, Gillespie, Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Yusef Lateef, etc. how could anyone go wrong? Well unfortunately most of these tracks become the usual monotonous drum-machine driven loop tracks that outstay their welcome after a couple minutes. It's all certainly listenable Starbucks background music I guess... but all of the original tracks are so much more interesting, so why bother? (It's interesting that they sell the "Unmixed" collections for about $5.00 while these "Remixes" are $15+... hey if this gets people to check out the originals, that is a worthy result I guess.) The one rather nice thing is the string-y rework of Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" -- but I'd still take the CLASSIC original tune any day. Am I just becoming an old crumudgeon or is this stuff just not very interesting? Heck, I liked the Motown: Remixed album for the most part... Reich: Remixed was great too (but GlassCuts: Philip Glass Remixed was terrible...) Maybe Jazz just isn't suited for this kind of thing after all? but the Photek sampling of Pharoah's "Astral Traveling" for the track "Rings Around Saturn" is way groovier (in a groovy robot way) than this attempt... hmmmm (Also... the Coltrane "poetry reading" at the end is a bit embarrasing.... I don't think John would have approved of this one... bad call, Ravi...)

Customer Reviews:
Good Annual! .......2006-08-18
The Annual 2004 is really good (better than the 2005, IMO) Right from the start you get into action with the EuroDance/Trance of Disc 1...From "Love Me Right" all the way to Steve Muranos "Passion" the disc has an exceptional flow of good songs...then it kinda loosens but not drastically...
Disc 2 is great as well...Milk & Sugar's "Let the Sun Shine" starts the party and the disc keeps up the good flow of songs pretty much untilt the end of the compilation...
ofcourse some great songs are missing (IMO) like Paul van Dyk's "Nothing But You" and Tiesto's "Traffic"...and others...but this Annual is still pretty strong.
I'm Lovin' It.......2004-11-17
I bought this 3 CD set when I was in Scotland in January, and I has not come out of my CD rotation yet! The sheer volume of songs here has something for everyone's ear. I also purchased Clubber's Guide 2004 & 21st Century Disco, both of which I recommend. If you are looking for something similar to this set, but a little more compressed, go with the Clubber's Guide 2004 set - it has a lot of the same songs.
Good effort........2004-08-16
I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to Ministry of Sound releases, I only have 10 of their compilations - But this is one of the best of them, especially for someone new. The main reason I buy comps is to have the 'best' songs, so I can discover new artists then buy their own albums/singles. The highlights are Junior Jack's 'Da Hype' (Although it's the dub version with no lyrics - I highly recommend that single in addition - the singer is no other than Robert Smith of The Cure...) 'Cry Little Sister' by the Lost Brothers, 'Lonliness' and 'Wilderness' are also great tracks. 'Deepest Blue' is a highlight of disc 2, and disc 3 is made entirely of material from older annuals - Sort of a cash-in, but if you can get this set cheap enough, it's a cool bonus. However, Even in the limited amount of MOS CDs I have, there's alot of duplicates... But if you're just starting out, this is a great choice. However, if I was able to notice alot of recycled material, I'm sure people that have been buying these compilations for years will be even more annoyed. Other than that, though, this is a good mix - Highly recommended.
Awesome CD for people who like Dance.......2004-06-16
I've been impressed with the things MOS have put out. Granted this is not exactly the best album I have recieved from them, it's pretty damn good! If you like a good dance CD to add to your collection I would say this is a good start.
