4 out of 5 stars Down to earth space jamming.......2007-03-22

Arguably Steve Hillage at his best. Known for his work with Kahn and Gong, Steve Hillage (not to be confused with Steve Howe or Steve Hackett) should be ranked right up there with the best of the prog rock guitar wizards. Not as spacey as his work with Gong. Includes some straight ahead hard rock mixed with that european eclectic jazz flow thanks to help from his Gong band mates. Don't waste time on the cheap copies, go for the remaster. I had this album going back 25 years and I wore it out. Extras are a curiosity at best and the remaster does capture the spirit of the original but still could use some help on the high end of the spectrum, otherwise would have given it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars "The Greatest Psychedelic Jam Recording Ever" just got better! .......2007-02-06

I know there's some competition for that title, but this would AT LEAST be in the top 5! It's certainly one of the most psychedelic AND most virtuosic performances you are ever likely to hear.

Steve Hillage spews one face-melting solo after another, Dave Stewart (one of the greatest rock keyboardists ever) goes toe-to-toe with him in Mahavishnuesque style, over Pierre Moerlen's pummelling jazz-rock drums and Mike Howlett's hypnotic bass lines--while the rest of the Gong crew and some special guests (e.g. Lindsay Cooper on bassoon!) add to the thick swirling stew of psychedelia.

The only point of reference is Gong's "You", but this time in the service of Hillage's pleasant hippy vibe. It's more accessible than Gong, since Daevid Allen's whimsical weirdness is absent. All in all a dreamy cocktail of licks, spaced out melodies, and effects, not like any other album you have ever heard, unless of course you are a Gong fan already. And certainly Hillage's greatest album ever.

The remaster is very well done, and sounds much better than the previous CD release--and better than the original vinyl release as well. Some subtle noise reduction must have been used, because all earlier versions had a disturbing amount of tape hiss. The EQ is just right, the guitar licks are clean, and the sonic power of the mix is about as good as I imagine you could get from the somewhat limited source tape. The packaging is as lovingly executed as the music deserves. I'm a little disappointed in the "Pentagramaspin" bonus track, because I had the "V" sampler on vinyl back in the day, and thought the original mix was just fine--unlike SH, who remixed it with too much reverb (IMHO) for this release. The "power trio" mix of "Aftaglid", however, is pretty damned cool, I must admit. All in all a deluxe package at a very reasonable price.

Please take note: This album is ESSENTIAL for any fan of psychedelic guitar!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

5 out of 5 stars Long-lost prog gem!.......2006-04-19

This is one of those guys who probably had a bigger influence on prog-rock and electronica than most other 70's artists...and yet he is somewhat forgotten these days. His first solo album (after teaming with Gong for the Radio Gnome trilogy) is truly a progressive rock gem. Firmly rooted in the jazz-rock Canterbury style, this album features some sweet glissando guitarwork, excellent experiments with delay, and of course, the masterpiece 'Solar Musick Suite', a 17-minute structured work with several different parts and some top-notch jamming (one of the jam-ees is Dave Stewart, of Hatfield & the North, as well as Egg, fame). Hillage is a great guitarist, with a very unique playing style, and this disc gives him plenty of room to show off. Most of the musicians here are Gong alums, with Pierre Moerlen on the kit, sounding as good as ever, Mike Howlett on bass, as well as Didier Malherbe on sax and flute. Miquette Giraudy (his wife and future partner with System 7) is here too on synths. Great disc. Recommended for Gong fans or fans of guitar-dominated progressive rock.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Hillage - 'Fish Rising' (Caroline).......2005-06-30

Originally released in 1975,this was Hillage's first solo outing.Nicely done progressive tripper,if I do say so myself. What makes 'Fish Rising' a should-have is the fact that Hillage gets help on this disc from several fellow Gongsters, like bassist Mike Howlett, drummer Pierre Moerlen(R.I.P.)and sax player Didier Malherbe.Best cuts are the rather pretentious seventeen-minute "Solar Musick Suite" and "The Salmon Song".One COULD say this is a 'Gong' album minus Daevid Allen.Nice to own a copy of.

4 out of 5 stars Snarling, twisted sonic forays.......2005-05-05

Several other reviewers here have expertly covered the history, background, and features of this recording (much more thoroughly than I could have). So I would like to expand a bit on the experience of hearing "Fish Rising."

It took me a few listens to tamp down my inner voice that kept compelled me to compare this vintage session with more modern works and to instead appreciate this work for its own merits.

Steve Hillage sears the aural landscape, having great fun with effects, rifts, and melodies. His guitar playing is inspired and the musicians on board with him are clearly in synch. It's fun to hear some of the odd arrangements and combinations (love the bassoon!), and on the instrumental segments clearly dominate.

If there is a weakness here, it's the lyrics and vocals. A concept album about fish is a bit strange, and some of lyrics at times may elicit a groan or nod signifying "wonder what they were smoking?"

Regardless, play this CD loud for full effect and enjoy Mr. Hillage and company's snarling, twisted sonic forays!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Psychedelic Jam Recording Ever?.......2005-04-21

I know there's some competition for that title, but this would AT LEAST be in the top 5! It's certainly one of the most psychedelic AND most virtuosic performances you are ever likely to hear.

5 out of 5 stars White Hot Inspiration.......2003-12-23

What I have to add, beyond my full agreement with the other reviewers, is how inspired all these gifted musicians were in the studio. If you want to hear studio jams that cook to the point of nova-like intensity, there can be no better album. Just listen to the "horn" section ( probably Gong's Dieder Maherbe and Lindsay Cooper of Henry Cow on saxes and bassoon, repsectively) near the end of "The Salmon Song". What is even more remarkable is that the recording "smokes" even though much of the time all you are listening to is multi-layered Hillage.
Anyway, "Salmon" is hot from the get-go, "Solar Musik Suite" builds to a tremendous, shattering climax and "Aftaglid" has to be heard to be believed. All preferably LOUD.
This is the real deal. Probably explains its obscurity. None of the standard issue guitar gods (Clapton, Hendrix) EVER issued anything like this. And the only other thing I heard that was close was labeled "jazz" (LArry Coryell, Live at the Village Gate-its Coryell's ultimate psychrock jam and sadly forgotten now.)

5 out of 5 stars The best psychedelic-prog album ever made.......2006-07-27

After years of being out-of-print on Amazon (the last time I saw it listed was 2001, I think!), it looks like this major gem is finally available again, albeit still as an unremastered import. Steve Hillage's debut solo album, "Fish Rising" did respectable business in the UK and was the beginning of a top 10 solo career. He made the work while still the primary guitarist in Gong, just after the acrimonious departure of founding member and guitarist Daevid Allen (whose early solo work is also worth checking out). The album features every member of Gong except Allen and his loopy girlfriend-singer Shakti Yoni, so it is really an ersatz Gong LP which sounds extremely similar to their peak "Angel's Egg"/"You" period, with perhaps slightly less humor and more focus on the guitarwork (both solos and soundscapes).

The results are absolutely stunning, and make for what is perhaps the finest psychedelic prog album bar none, including all Gong albums (and the copycat band Ozric Tentacles that came after them). The first and longest cut, "Solar Musick Suite", begins as a gentle, dreamy singalong which reminds one of early/mid-70s Floyd, before mutating into an incredible keyboard jam courtesy of guest organist Dave Stewart (of Hatfield And The North), before finally climaxing in a series of Mahavishnu-Orchestra instrumental pyrotechnics that has to be heard to be believed, before a reprise of the opening song. And this may be the *worst* cut on the disc (only the vocals themselves slightly disappoint)!

Next comes "Fish", a short one-minute jazzy interlude heavy on the sound effects of water splashing, before seguing into the sublime "Meditation Of The Snake", a guitar/synth duet that reaches for the stars.

Side two opened with "Salmon Song", perhaps the highlight of the work, with a *killer* psychedelic guitar riff full of the glissando technique patented by Daevid Allen. The singalong verses lead into a dreamy, almost underwater section in which Hillage's guitar mimics the serene sounds of a school of fish, before bursting into an insane solo full of wah-wah effects and
some superb synth backing (similar to the synthwork on Gong's "You" album). The whole thing implodes on itself, from which the opening oriental sounds of "Aftaglid" come in. The gentle chimes soon give way to the apocalyptic sounds of a tsunami, wave after wave of sublime feedback issuing from the guitar, before settling down again into a lengthy, meditative section of repetitive, highly reverbed acoustic guitar droning and ethereal female backing vocals. Once again, the track climaxes with an over-the-top solo, Hillage proving that virtuosic, five-minute wanking on the fretboard can indeed sound cathartic when handled correctly...he manages to invoke Hendrix at his very peak. Never again would the artist manage to sound this dense or underground, as each successive album would be a little more commercial than the last--nonetheless, every album up to and including 1979's double live disc is worth owning and playing many, many, times. Long live the fish.
