It's been a long wait for the solo debut from Irish icon Dolores O'Riordan. After all, the Cranberries issued their swan song in 2001. After their break up, O'Riordan collaborated with Germany's Jam and Spoon, Italy's Zucchero, and David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti. She also appeared, as herself, in the 2006 comedy Click. All the while, she toiled away on her first solo effort. Fortunately, good things come to those who wait. Co-produced by Youth (the Verve, U2), Are You Listening? is a throwback to 1980s-era Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sinead O'Connor--sweeping keyboards, forceful drumming, and muscular guitar work. It may seem like a melodramatic move, but the music never overwhelms the slight yet steely figure at the center of the maelstrom, particularly on the lilting "Ordinary Day" and haunting "Black Widow." Cranberries fans expecting something more demure may be taken aback, but O'Riordan's supple voice should win over most skeptics. And lyrically, she compensates with tender words inspired by her husband ("Apple of My Eye"), the death of her mother-in-law ("Black Widow"), and the birth of her youngest child ("Ordinary Day"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

EVEN without the Cranberries, this album is so rich who needs them!? I also love her as always unique voice that can easily be recognized! EVERY SONG ON THIS ALBUM IS GREAT! That is a rarity these days!

5 out of 5 stars Good Cd!.......2007-07-06

It arrived in less than a week and in good condition. The music is a bit different than that of the Cranberries but to me it still does it. Dolores is a very talented artist and any real fan should have in their collection this cd!

What an amazing album. A great effort from the unique Limrick girl. I did like the Cranberries to some extent but this is much more a mture and outstanding effort.
The music is catchy and clean at the same time. My favorites are "Ordinary day", A beautifully written piece of art with tender words oozing with honesty. Rich melodies and easy flowing arrangements. The absolute stunner on the album is "Ecstasy", Once again beautifully written and produced. The lyrics are controversial but I'm sure one can understand what the lass is talking about! and the music is absolutely devine. I think this is the best song she has ever written! I'm hooked!!

The great thing about the album is that there isn't a bad song on it and you can listen to the whole album without skipping tracks, something very hard to find nowadays. I wish Dolores would be more widely promoted as the world deserves to know of her talent which is genuine and generous but unfortunately it's the manufactured Irish boy band Westlife with all their repititious hollow songs that are more clever with promotion and playing on a sickly boring image that seem to be the better sellers but then again, so are the likes of Britney and Crazy Frog!!!. Never mind Dolores, you have your loyal fan base and most of all, you know you're true to yourself. Both thumbs up!!

5 out of 5 stars DOLORES HOW I WORSHIP THEE!!!!!!.......2007-06-29

GOD I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!

She IS my favorite artist of all time. Of course I purchased her solo cd without having heard one song on it. Her first solo cd "ARE YOU LISTENING" is amazing. The cd is definitely Dolores throughout since she wrote every song. There's rock, alt rock, ballad, love songs -- something for everyone. Not to be crude, but Dolores could poop on a pancake, call it a cd, and I would buy it.

The cd starts out with "Ordinary Day" reminescent of her old Cranberrie days. Then you notice the change or "the growth" as she calls it.

"When We Were Young" is straight forward rock. I like that she's utilizing synthesizer now. Then the love song to her daughter "In The Garden" which has a harder, darker edge. Next, "Human Spirit" which I love because it's such an odd rendering. I believe she's added violins and a piccolo along with old fashioned tambourine. It is a likeable, odd kind of alt-rock song with almost a hint of Middle East to it.

Next, and OH MY GAWD comes my favorite song on her cd. It is the hard rocking and VERY, VERY catchy song, "Loser." Here she shows she still has that biting sarcastic sense of humor: "You think you're clever, but you haven't got a clue. A two watt light bulb is brighter than you." It is a great, straight-forward rock song. The next rock style song is "October." All of her up-tempo songs have strong catchy riffs, great production sound.

The other songs on the cd are mid-to-low tempo songs. The lyrics of these songs sometimes convey a sense of pain or loss -- probably due to events she's endured the last couple of years (multiple deaths of those close to her). The lyrics also convey at times her inner struggle with coping and accepting loss (if you're gone, why are you still here? Don't come near, I don't want to cry any more. Memories, illusion versus reality)

I've read some reviews that suggest Dolores' vocals can be annoying. But one of the things I like most about this woman is that she does NOT have tremendous vocal ability and she doesn't seek to hide that fact. Many of her songs rely on straight-forward vocal/falsetto/vocal/falsetto. Which gives her that unique lilting sound.

She has a new band behind her but she, as always, plays piano and guitar (so very, very well).

There are only 3 women in this world I have ever idolized or worshipped. First is Patti Smith, next Princess Diana (deceased), and Dolores O'Riordan. I will never forget the first time I saw Dolores on stage. A diminuitive elf of a creature playing a big guitar that made such a big, incredible sound, and then there's that unique voice.

I wish this cd was getting air play. I hope it does and that it is a successful solo venture for her so that she will continue to create music.

My world is truly such a better place because of this lovely little Irish musician/singer. I think if you bought the cd, you might just feel the same.

Kelly Clarkson, kindly step aside: the title "Because of You" now belongs to Ne-Yo, who has done things with it no one with a pair of hands to clap will soon forget. And not just on the phenomenally appealing first single. Throughout Because of You, the sophomore disc by the songwriter responsible for such monster hits as Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable" and Rihanna's "Unfaithful," a flutter-voiced fluidity--the kind seldom heard since Michael Jackson's Off the Wall days--reigns. Jay-Z makes room to let it rip on "Crazy," and Jennifer Hudson wraps herself around it with restraint on "Leaving Tonight," a lovers' quarrel that could hold its own against anything Marilyn McCoo & Billy David Jr. cared to toss off in their heyday. If it's MJ who's lingered in Ne-Yo's ear longest, Prince hasn't gone silent, either: echoes poke up on the far-out "Sex with My Ex." Elsewhere, shades of contemporaries such as Nelly and Diddy show through. Overall, though, Ne-Yo's flammable hooks, flirty vibe, and flawless vocals reveal an R&B genius in the making. If the talent bar for up-and-comers is set impossibly high in the coming years, chances are it will be all because of him. --Tammy La Gorce

I'm just saying you should check out what other reviews have been written from a reviewer before you let it pursued you for or against a release because it may influence how much credit you give their review.
This sophomore release by Neo shows maturity, growth and solidifies his presence in the R & B genre. Because of You, Crazy minus J-Z intro., Do You, Leaving Tonight, Aint Thinking About You, Make it Work, Tell Me, are most noteable. Which is quite a number of tracks, practically the whole CD. Each track flows into the next, you can really just press play and relax, let the music work it's magic.

4. Do You
6. Leaving Tonight
11. Say It

I recommend this CD to listeners who prefer a CD that isn't filled with featured rappers!

5 out of 5 stars "say it".......2007-07-10

if "say it" were the ONLY song on the album, i still would've gotten my money's worth. i also love "do you", "because of you", and "can we chill". all in all i like about the same amount of songs on this album as i did on the other one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sophomore Album!.......2007-07-07

I am always wary of sophomore efforts from singers, but I really loved Ne-Yo's first CD, and I love the fact that he's a songwriter -- his songs usually make sense -- so I went ahead and picked it up even though I had only heard snippets of "Because of You" (the title track) and no other song. I'm glad I did. I really love this CD from start to finish -- the tracks are smooth and you can definitely see the influence from different artists on the CD. It's a "chill on a Saturday afternoon" CD (and that's exactly what I am doing right now), and I like it better than his first CD.

My favorite songs on the album: "Crazy" (featuring Jay-Z, it's well written and a really smooth entry on the CD); "Can We Chill" (smooth dance track about being in a club, which I usually hate, but this one is pretty well written as well and I love the beat and melody), "Addicted" (the premise is funny, and if you can laugh good-naturedly at Ne-Yo's grandstanding in the CD -- it's a great song), "Leaving Tonight" (I love Jennifer Hudson, she sounds like a goddess on this CD, American Idol shouldn't have cut her and I hope she comes out with a CD ASAP!) and "Sex With My Ex" (Prince fans should flock to this one, it sounds like something The Artist would've sung.)

5 out of 5 stars Best.......2007-07-06

Neyo has come with his sophomore album STRONG. This is a play right through CD. All of the songs are HOT!

Wish You Were Here is a song cycle dedicated to Pink Floyd's original frontman, Syd Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the music business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend. The real star of the show, though, is the production: sparkling, convoluted, designed to sound deeply oh-wow under the influence--and pretty great sober too--with David Gilmour getting lots of space for his most lyrical guitar playing ever. And, though the album is big and ambitious, even bombastic, it somehow dodges being pretentious--the Barrett tributes are honest and heartfelt, beneath all the grand gestures and stereophonic trickery. --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the many reasons I love Pink Floyd.......2007-06-13

For Pink Floyd, making a follow up album to 'Dark Side of the Moon' must have seemed an extremely daunting task. However with 'Wish You Were Here' they succeeded admirably. In his biography of the band, Nick Mason stated that they wanted to avoid simply making a sequel to the hugely successful predecessor and that they wanted to start afresh in a new musical direction. This decision resulted in a creation of true musical beauty.

The long, ambling and elegant opening track 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' was a new step even for Floyd. Both parts of this track have a relaxed yet compelling beauty that puts it right up there with the best the band has produced.

After the ethereal beauty of the opening track, the following two bring a far more sombre mood to proceedings. 'Welcome to the Machine' is a disgruntled sideswipe at the human condition which is somewhat reminiscent in lyrical content, of the track 'Time' on 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Hot on the heels of this is 'Have A Cigar', a pessimistic jibe at the music industry creeps that came out of the woodwork after their sudden shot to international success. Although these two tracks are far more downbeat, they are executed with a Floydian bite that makes them quality tracks.

Along with 'The Wall' and 'Dark Side of the Moon', this was one of the albums that defined Floyd and simply demands to be listened to.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......2007-06-10

This is a good, but not a great album. Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, and Have a Cigar are all classic cuts and never get old. The Syd Barrett tribute songs Shine on You Crazy Diamond are a little weaker. Over all it's worth a tumble, but it's no Dark Side Of The Moon.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must.......2007-05-29

Probably the best Floyd CD. I had an earlier (non-digitally remastered) version of this album and found that this version is really a treat in comparison. As far as the music itself, every track is a classic and a must for any classic rock fan. If you don't own a good version this album, you need look no further.

4 out of 5 stars Wish it was a little less drab.......2007-05-27

So Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is probably considered their third greatest album in the normal consensus behind Dark Side and The Wall. It's not "Animals" and "Obscured by Clouds" are better than this album but this one is still a fine one despite being only five songs long.

This one starts out with a classic of a song in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Beautiful, epic, pick your favorite cliche and use it here because this song has it all, even a saxophone solo at the end. It is later reprised at the end of the album this the first one is far superior. This song along with Wish You Were Here were written for former frontman Syd Barrett who even visited them in the studio during the recording, small world isn't it. Speaking of the title track it is an amazing song. But one thing it does that I love is that it is simple. Accoustic guitar with some great lyrics provides a nice sendoff to Mr. Barrett.

The one problem this album has is the two music industry rants from Roger Waters. "Welcome to the Machine" is atrocious and overlong. "Have A Cigar" is better but it's not even sung by a member of Pink Floyd.

Other than the rants this is a fine album. And for once a Pink Floyd album that seems to express hope, nostalgia and something more than just being depressed which is always a nice change of pace.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Discovered Sooner.......2007-05-27

Wish You Were Here is equally as superb as Dark Side of the Moon and serves as a sequel with an emotional feel and blues-based, melodic background centered by outstanding guitars. The use of sound effects that the band incorporated two years prior are as involved again and help to enhance the mood and vibrational feel of the music. With having to fulfill mammoth expectations in 1975 after an phenomenal album like Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd only broadened their musical horizons but played with the same passion to create another album that offers proof as to why they were, and still are, so highly regarded as innovators in rock music.

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

What you see is rarely what you get with Jimmy Buffett. While he may contend that he is the king of slackers, a modern day Dean Martin whipping up fizzy rum drinks under the palm trees in a silk Hawaiian shirt, this best-selling author and raconteur is actually the thinking man's party animal. His deceptively breezy lyrics and lazy charm belie a shrewd social commentator and a man not at peace with his world or his own mortality--taking well-aimed potshots at everything from cell phone culture to ancient Greek history to the threat of terrorism, as on the sharply ironic "Party at the End of the World." But having said that, all the unrest exhibited in these 14 songs makes for a far more interesting album than he's made in over two decades. Reflective, unstinting, and often nostalgic, the musician changes the tempo and the subject matter, swapping his usual languid island exhortations of alcohol and brief bikini tops for the fascinating emotional ambiguity of "Whoop De Doo," or the simple charm of "Nothing but a Breeze," which seems so autobiographical it's hard to believe that Buffett didn't write it. But the standout track is his chilling cover of Mary Gauthier's "Wheel Inside the Wheel," revealing exactly what kind of demons have been residing under the singer's ever-present baseball cap. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Best Buffett CD in a Decade!!.......2007-06-29

After the commercially successful (but disappointing to me) "License To Chill" I was afraid Jimmy may continue down the "generic, glossed up country" road. I wasn't all that excited about this CD coming out due to that reasaon but to my surprise he has released his best and most consistent CD since "Banana Wind". Alot of good stuff on here including some excellent cover tunes ("Weather With You", "Nothing But a Breeze", "Whoop De Do"). "Bama Breeze" has a country feel to it but the CD never crosses into the "mainstream Nashville" sound that "License" did. Even my wife who isn't a Buffett fan loves "Weather With You". Excellent cover of the Crowded House tune. If you are like me and didn't care much for "License To Chill" give this one a chance. Yeah it's not "A1A" or "Changes In Latitude" or "Havana Daydreamin'" (what I consider Buffett's holy trinity) but it's a solid enjoyable CD.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD that Buffett fans will enjoy.......2007-05-17

This is another excellent CD by Jimmy Buffett. The CD starts with a great song, "Bama Breeze" and rolls right along with great songs such as "Take the Weather with You" and "Party at the End of the World." A really interesting song is "Whoop De Doo" that features Mark Knopfler on guitar and every song will have you singing along and wishing you were somewhere in the Caribbean or on a beach somewhere away from the daily grind.

One song, "Breathe in, Breathe out, Move on" is a insightful song about Hurricane Katrina. The lyrics are great and really struck a chord when I listened to it the first time.

This CD is definitely worth adding to anyone's collection!

5 out of 5 stars Another Good One!.......2007-05-13

Just another one of Buffett's great albums! It's a bit different than Cheeseburger in Paradise or Fins but it's good just the same! If you like Jimmy than you'll like this!

4 out of 5 stars New JB CD.......2007-05-08

After listening to the album once and then attending his Frisco concert, I have really grown to like this album immensely. I really like Take the Weather With You and Party at the End of the World. I think we will hear these two songs for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Best in Years.......2007-05-01

Jimmy is an odd sort. While many country stars imitate his music style now (Alan Jackson's 5 o'clock, Kenny Chesney's last CD) Jimmy is still going the other direction trying to break into country music. 'Take the Weather...' is his latest attempt to get back into the genre. While this to me is an odd move, I think this is his best effort in the last 10 years. Bama Breeze, Weather with you and Dukes on Sunday are wonderful songs both in composition and style. And while he didn't actually write many of the songs, there is a definite Jimmy feel and vibe through the CD. This CD has become one of my favorites in our Buffett library. Album Description

With his latest studio album Close As You Get, Gary Moore continues in a direction not too dissimilar from his 2006 studio release Old, New, Ballads, Blues. Mixing original tunes with some interesting Blues covers that Gary has rediscovered, Close As You Get showcases Moore's exceptional talent as a guitarist and is destined to be one of the finest blues and guitar albums released this year.

Gary Moore is acknowledged as one of the finest musicians that the British Isles has ever produced. In a career that dates back to the 1960s, there are few musical genres that he has not turned his adroit musical hand to, and has graced the line-ups of several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and Skid Row to name but three.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREAT MR. MOORE.......2007-07-01

one reviewer said the Gary never made it on RS's 2003 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. I would have been more shocked if he did make it as that rag is extremely overrated and not nearly as hip as they think they are. That rag isn't worth the paper it's printed on and the only way I'd like it is if I was 12 years old and clueless.
Anyone with 50% hearing in their ears can tell that Gary is one of the best to pick the six strings. What attracted me to Gary way back in the day was that his licks were full of fire and passion, he played like he meant it. I love his hard rock work and I very much enjoy his blues playing.
For some odd and unexplainable reason he never caught fire here in the states and that is a damn shame. In his prime he could wipe the floor with the pretty boy posers that some people seem to drool over. Get this disc along with some of his older work and bask in the light of one of the great guitarists ever.

Some say Gary is overlooked and underrated. Perhaps they are right, for he didn't even make it into RS's 2003 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. But that's just fine with me. Over the last many years I have become jealous for Gary; go find your own guitar god. Just keep reading and believing your rags about great guitarists and you will miss the best.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the last one.......2007-06-15

While I think the blues venture is getting a little redundant for Gary, I was pleasantly surprised. There is enough difference here from his recent albums to make this a great release. Alot better than Old New Ballads Blues. However, hopefully he'll try something new next time.

5 out of 5 stars Rock & Blues Legend Delivers Again.......2007-06-08

It's a great CD. Each one since the Scars CD seems to get better and better. Gary continues to place more effort on his vocals and is nearly back to the Still Got The Blues and After Hours era when considering the smoothness, dynamics and overall tone of his voice.

The order of the songs is mid/up tempo followed by a ballad. This pattern repeats throughout the entire CD.

If The Devil Made Whisky - A mid tempo, growling tune with a slightly abrasive guitar riff. Nice slide guitar work (which is always a treat for me). It's a great lead off track.

Trouble At Home - Slow bluesy ballad with an organ backing up the melody. Very dark and moody solo.

Thirty Days - Up tempo number with an infectious groove. The solo fits the song perfectly (you'll "whoo" right along with Gary). Fun.

Hard Times - Mid tempo shuffle with harmonica coloring the song throughout. The guitar solo is played with alot of passion and energy. You can almost see Gary making the faces. Great song.

Have You Heard - Back to the ballad, and again with organ backing. The solo is more passionate in this one than Trouble At Home. Nice.

Eyesight To The Blind - A recognizable cover tune. Gary's take is fairly predictable, but engaging. The organ is present, but a bit more in the background as Gary's guitar volume donimates it. Very good solo helps make the song distinctly Gary's.

Evenin' - Another ballad. Starts out with just a percussion beat, then the rest of the band joins in. This one probably has Gary's most vunerable vocal and delicate solo. Dreamy.

Nowhere Fast - Slow tempo song that is essentially a ballad I suppose. Not as delicate as Evenin', but not as dark and moody as Trouble At Home. Here is where I'm beginning to think that this is not the "back to the rock blues" everyone had thought this CD would be. Ha!

Checkin' Up On My Baby - Harmonica driven mid tempo. The harmonica tone is devastating. Gary's extended guitar solo becomes an extention of the harmonica tone and comes on very smoothly. Harmonica comes back together with the guitar for the outro. This would be a great song to see live. Awesome.

I Had A Dream - Very slow tempo ballad with a soaring vocal for the chorus. My buddy always comments on songs like this one. He compares the depression and despair in Gary's voice during the verses to "wanting to slit his wrists". Passionate.

Sundown - A rare treat! This one is an acoustic resonator slide guitar number that is just Gary and his guitar. It is a unique and perfect way to close the CD.

The CD runs just over 51 minutes, which is nearly identical to the last CD, and 10 minutes longer than the "way too short" Power Of The Blues. If you've loved the best of Gary's previous blues work, I have no doubt that you'll love this one too.

From Amazon.ca

Finger Eleven's career shifted suddenly and significantly when their 2003 emo-hit "One Thing" turned the band's career on its axis. At that point, they went from being known as 'the boys from Burlington who used to call themselves the Rainbow Butt Monkeys' to a group whose anthemic slow rock song went Platinum in Canada and Gold in America. So how does a band respond after its widespread fame is the result of just one song? In the case of Them Vs. You Vs. Me, Finger Eleven have consciously stayed away from anything remotely resembling their past and put the focus on the straight-ahead alt-rock formula that they've consistently excelled at. There are certain old-school rock influences that bleed clearly through their music, from Rush-isms in the form of frenetic time changes ("Sense of a Spark") to "Talking to the Walls" and "Lost My Way" which evoke Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. Frontman Scott Anderson's voice is impressive throughout, but when he sings ballads, especially "Window Song" and "Easy Life," something enables him to appeal to a whole different audience than traditional alt-rock fans. There is no 'one thing' on this disc that will allow them to reach the heights of their self-titled CD, just a consistency that will provide longtime fans reason to appreciate the band even more. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected!.......2007-07-13

After seeing lukewarm reviews, I went into this with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised! The songs were not all "One Thing" imitations, but rather the band has gone in a different directly with their music. Two of the songs even have a slight 'twang' to them, and while I despise country music, the 'twang' works well on this CD.
Ironically, Amazon has paired this with Chevelle's latest, and those two CD's are currently my top two.

5 out of 5 stars notice a pattern here?.......2007-07-09

notice how everyone who says this is my first time hearing F11 i love it and they give it 5 stars? yea..cuz its a good album..all you 1 star guys own greyest of blue skies and your wanting a repeat...well f11 dosent do that... thats like watching and loving super troupers then renting their 1st release called puddle cruisers and hating it because you wanted another super troupers out of it....but would you have liked the movie if youd never seen super troupers?..most likely....NEVER judge someone on their other works. and you won't ruin the music for yourself.... if them vs you vs me was released my ohh say...some band called cheetah lol and you heard paralyzer...youd prob like the album...

5 out of 5 stars What a great new concept album!.......2007-07-08

I'm a new fan and picked this one up the day it came out because of Paralyzer. I listened for a couple weeks and liked it a lot, then I put it away so I didn't get burned out on it.

I listened again today driving from Philly to DC and really paid attention. Aside from the myriad classic rock influences that can be heard and the solid musicianship, this disc is quite the concept album. Best one I've heard in a long time and I'm very, very rarely impressed by new musical offerings. I understand that this may not be the same sound as their previous offerings but I really don't care. This is good music.

5 stars!

2 out of 5 stars No more paralyzers?.......2007-07-08

I love Paralyzer.. it has a harder sound to it which I was hoping to hear on the rest of the album. Unfortunately, I only liked the first track and found the rest to be a bit of a disappointment. Seems like "Paralyzer" should have been done by Disturbed. The only reason I gave the album a 2 was because it has one song I can't get enough of. Otherwise, it's a zero. Generic and poor lyrics = radio friendly. Not what I'm looking for.

5 out of 5 stars It's Awesome.......2007-06-02

I got into Finger Eleven for their track 'One Thing'. That was a really good song, excellently composed but it did not make a serious fan out of me. That is until the new album 'Them-Vs-You-Vs-Me'.

I find Soctt Andersons vocals consistent throughout the entire album. Yes it is more alternative rock but don't be put off by being classified as a label when it comes to what you listen to. This is a very enjoyable cd.
The tracks, Paraylzed, Falling On, and Taking To The Walls are outstanding in terms of more of the rocking type tracks.

However, this is only a treat before we get some real amazing vocals on some of the more acoustic type tracks.
Real bonus to the CD are the following:

* I'll Keep Your Memory Vague. 5/5
"This won't break your heart, But I just think it could, coz I haven't tried as hard as I should..to..to seperate you from everything I do...but I would never wanna come between us 2" - This entire line is the best vocal I've heard this year for an intro.

* Window Song 5/5
"All The Windows are playing their game...we won't see outisde again...til I ride all the fog away...I'm putting words in their place...but all of the fog is erased & I write all the words I never said"

* Talking To The Walls
-Excellent Intro & again great lyrics. i.e. "Look at the shape I'm in, talking to the walls again'

They have staying power, for the people that have mocked this album, it's been unfair, bands need to evolve.

I would definitely like to extend my gratitude of thanks to Finger Eleven, they put out an album I can really relate to.

Come tour in Auckland, NZ some time.

Amazon.com essential recording

As emblematic of its time as of its sorcerer-like creator, 1967's Are You Experienced unleashed Jimi Hendrix onto a world in the midst of such cultural and musical shakeups that it really didn't seem as "far out" as it actually was. It wasn't just Hendrix's virtuosic skill as a pure player that was so impressive; it was, even more, the range and scope of sheer sound that he coaxed, cajoled, and ripped out of his instrument. "Purple Haze," "Manic Depression," and "I Don't Live Today" filled ears with indelible sonic images, and songs like "Foxey Lady" and "Fire" pointed the way toward a new brand of rock-charged soul music. And how about a hand for drummer Mitch Mitchell? --Billy Altman

This is probally the best JHE album ever relesed this is when they were at their prime its truly pure gold its a great classic album a true acid rock album that rocks! this album came out with some of jimi hendrixs best songs,

5 out of 5 stars divine inspiration.......2007-05-18

listening to 'hey joe' for the first time was a major milestone in my decidely short-lived musical career. When I attended the Berklee college of music, I cited this as a huge contributing factor to the genesis of my passion for music and the audio genre. I still listen to this from time to time and and become giddy at the unashamed, unstoppable vision of a very special man. This is considered one of the greatest albums of all time for reason folks. get it. listen to the genius and the pure art.

5 out of 5 stars The Jimi album.......2007-05-15

This recording laid it down for Jimi Hendrix and in his short life in the spotlight, he never recorded a better album. I believe that he might have at least given this a run for the money down the road had he lived, but that's all speculation at this point.
The hits are here and there is surprisingly no filler. Even though it came out during the zenith of the psychedelic craze, it is far less trippy than Electric Ladyland two years later. The focus of this record is thoroughly blues, r'n'b, and rock based. Even Third Stone From The Sun has enough of a point and vibe to not succumb to the obvious psychedelic theme. The additional tracks mostly lifted from Smash Hits are a nice bonus, especially Red House, one of his greatest songs.
This is the definitive Hendrix album and one of the most important rock records because it introduced this phenomenal artist and his shocking and spectacular guitar brilliance which continues to provide inspiration for guitarists today. Without Hedrix, you can write off dozens of famous guitarists to come in his wake who tried to recreate just some of his magic. If there is one necessary Hendrix album (and there are only a few in total), this is it.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Now Experienced. Are You?.......2007-04-13

Today I was going through my dad's old LPs and Are You Experienced caught my eye, before this I had only heard the biggest cover songs(Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Fire etc.) When I brought it up to him and told him I had never heard it he gave a shocked expression, as our record player no longer works I had to go out and buy the C.D. Afterwards my dad went into a whole story on how he went to see The Experience at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and afterwards he got to shake Mitch Mitchell's hand.( Our last name is Mitchell so that's kinda cool) Some of tthe best guitar riffs i've ever heard are on this album. I also enjoyed the balance of different music styles in the album, Hard Rock( Fire, Manic Depression, Foxey Lady, Purple Haze), Blues( Red House)and Ballads( The Wind Cries Mary). In conclusion I reccomend to anyone who appreciates REAL music not the new fake s*** they put on MTV.

Also reccomended: Band of Gypsys, later work of Hendrix if you don't have the means of finding the album at least download Machine Gun.

Cheers

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut, Excellent Re-issue.......2007-03-12

This album was originally released in 1967, yet its still brimming with raw vitality and brilliance. This edition was released in 1997, and its still a shining example of how to do a re-issue.

First off, the music itself is timeless. Who hasn't heard "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe" or "Purple Haze"? Tracks 1-11 represent the breadth of what was the original US LP version of the album. And man, is it great. There's variety galore in this. From the tender approach on "The Wind Cries Mary" to the psychedelic jazz-like excursion of "Third Stone From The Sun," there are plenty of avenues that this album embarks on. This ain't no blues rock plodfest. This is an experience in and of itself.

But wait, there's more!

Tracks 12-17 are the 1997 bonus tracks; some were originally on the UK but not US version of the album, while others stem from other sources. But, unlike some bonus tracks that only sully the content of the album, these go along quite well with the first 11 songs. Certain songs, like "Stone Free," are bursting with energy. Others have a bluesier vibe but its actually rather refreshing to hear that after the mindblowing nature of the album.

And the packaging itself is quite commendable. Long (albeit tremendously sycophantic) liner notes, lyrics and release dates for the songs. Well done!

Is there anything bad? Well, if psychedelic rock isn't your thing, you might not particularly like the album anyway.

Overall, this is a great example of a re-issue. They restore the album, add bonus material that compliments the original work and give us the best liner notes possible. Oh, and the CD itself has a groovy design as well.

A must-have!

There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion.

Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley

Every song is magical and he is truely wonderful. Have since purchased all his work and have also had the priviledge of seeing him live in concert in Glasgow/Scotland and was amazed. such a talented young man with a truely magical voice

5 out of 5 stars Floodgates of the Heart.......2007-06-05

This CD played almost constantly in my wife's car for several years. Josh Groban's voice is so gentle and can go from gentleness to anthematic, almost operatic, textures. He sings in Italian effortlessly. The orchestration on "Cinema Paradiso" is enthralling with its emotional reach, powerful even with lyrics beyond my understanding. "To Where You Are" is one of the most gorgeous songs. Knowing how it moved my wife in the years before breast cancer proved stronger than her body, it touches me now, "Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star I wish upon tonight to see you smile, if only for awhile to know you're there; a breath a ways to where you are." The song opens the floodgates of my heart. The Corrs were on Groban's 143 label when this release came out in 2001 and join him on the upbeat "Canto Alla Vita." Groban makes an interesting selection with Don McLean's "Vincent," polishing the melody to a fine sheen in ways that surpassed the original. Listening to Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is like being in a sonic cathedral with Groban's voice matching the grandeur of the music. With Charlotte Church on "The Prayer," Groban concludes the set with the Carole Bayer Sager/David Foster composition that makes one contemplate the eternal, "Lead us to a place, find us with your grace, give us faith so we'll be safe." Groban's first CD enhances with repeated listening by virtue of the depth of musicianship and performance. I listen to it now hearing the music that moved the one I love to tears. It does the same for me. I hope it touches you too. Bravo!

East Tennessee singer-songwriter Rodney Atkins scored a chart-topper with the title track of this second release, reframing the Irish drinking toast ("May you be in heaven five minutes before the devil knows you're dead") in a modern context and tying it all up in a Celtic/banjo wrapping fit for Keith Urban. It's a solid effort, and performed with unusual aplomb for a newcomer. But as the rest of the album shows, Atkins seems torn between being a thoughtful, poetic craftsman ("Angel's Hands," "Invisibly Shaken," "A Man on a Tractor") and a hero for redneck simpletons. On the opening "These Are My People," he works the family-values-and-small-town stereotypes to death, continuing with "About the South," a Charlie-Daniels-as-God number on which he's backed by an irritating group of chorines that sound suspiciously like the Hee Haw Hunnies. Which path will Atkins ultimately choose, NPR or Wal-Mart? His second single, "Watching You"--a doing-everything-like-Daddy paean--probably tells the tale. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars RODNEY ROCKS!!!.......2007-07-08

Rodney Atkins is an AWESOME singer. The Title, "If You're Going Through Hell" is a fabulous song for which Rodney sang to a little girl that passed away from bone cancer in my native state of Michigan. Shows what kind of character Rodney has when he heard that was her favorite song... Besides the fact that he is talented and has true compassion for his fans, this CD is EXCELLENT. I can't stop listening to every single song.

5 out of 5 stars This CD ROCKS!!!.......2007-07-07

Rodney Atkins is AWESOME!!!...You can listen to all the songs over and over in one day and the next day you will want to do it all over again. He has a awesome voice and his songs can relate to alot of people....like the song "Going Through Hell" there is not one person that has not had one of those days that they "feel like there is a sign there on their back that says 'i dont mind if you kick me' it seems like every body has things go from bad to worse and you think they cant get worse then that and then they do"....and yeah thats some of the song :)...I recommended Rodney to ALL of my friends and I think if you listen to the CD you will feel like Rodney has touched you like he has touched all of his fans!!!!
