Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my daughter loves this!.......2006-07-19

My 7 year old daughter loves this CD! So do all her friends. She listens all the time and it is our favorite sing along for the car. Of course, as an adult I like the real Beatles the best...but I was pleasantly surprised at how good these kids versions are. I don't understand all the "how dare they do this with the Beatles" stuff that some people blabber about. For me it works...my daughter loves it and now seems more interested in my other Beatles CDs, AND I much prefer hearing this over and over again versus some of the other kids music we have.

3 out of 5 stars Not better than The Beatles.......2006-07-14

The songs are supposedly sung by kids, but some of them are sung so similarly to the originals that it's hard to tell. Not that it's BAD that the songs are similar, it's just that, well, it's just not an improvement to the real Beatles, so why not just get a CD of the Beatles. I also bought Beatles 1 at the same time, and my 2 yr old loves listening to it. Get that instead.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Kids Music CD!.......2005-10-13

This is the best kids music CD we own. All three of my kids (ages 1 through 7) love listening to it. The best part of it is that I enjoy it too. Of course I have all the original Beatles records, but this CD does such a great job of introducing the kids to this music that it's fun for me and my husband too. Like another reviewer said, my kids weren't interested in the real Beatles recordings before. But after listening to this for a while, they are starting to enjoy both - The Bingo version and the originals. What a great idea. What a great album. I wish they would do the same with other groups. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

4 out of 5 stars A gateway to the Beatles.......2005-09-11

This cd is a good introduction to the Beatles. While the original recordings of these songs are my preference, that wasn't the case with my two year old. She didn't take to the originals. So these versions provided the necessary gateway to the originals. The songs are recreated very faithfully, but with children singing most of the chorus'. This was what was needed to create the interest for my child. After a few weeks of listening a seamless transition to the "#1's" was accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2005-04-22

I love this album. My kids love to listen to both the original Beatles and these versions. They especially love to listen to other kids singing! These versions seem to be made with the highest quality in mind and with respect for the orignal versions. After we got this album my children were dancing around and singing along. They request it over and over and the nice part is that it is also great for my wife and I to listen to (more so than other kids albums like The Wiggles). I highly recommend this album.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2007-07-05

This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27

The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11

I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11

I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19

Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.

Certainly worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Lucy !.......2004-11-08

I thought this cd was great it brings out the 1940s big band swind ! And Lucille Ball is lovely
as madam Dubarry !!!!

2 out of 5 stars A Casualty of Hollywood Musical Politics.......2004-09-16

I bought the CD to get a hold of Cole Porter's intellegent score. After a few songs in, I realized the movie score wasn't written by Cole, but by a string of Hollywood hacks (the most recognizable of the bunch being Finian Rainbow's Burton Lane)! What a ripoff! And Cole Porter's broadway score is currently not available anywhere. What a waste of resources (mine and Rhino's).

Still...if you want to hear the Tommy Dorsey band at their peak, or hear Red Skelton sing, before his TV tramp days, or Gene Kelly in his prime (Lucille Ball's voice, for the most part, was dubbed by another Hollywood hack, Martha Mears) pick this one up. I figure, when the buying public reads about how the movie moguls handled this project--not giving Ethel Merman the role she originated on Broadway, and replacing Cole's score for a bland, glossy, Hollywood hackjob, this CD will soon go out of print. Nice, bright remastering, though.

My two cents.

You're gonna need a cardiologist after this tasty schmaltz attack on your senses by previously unreleased excerpts from the 1951-1966 Coca-Cola radio show. Mario Lanza's vibrant, satisfying tenor rings thrillingly, but lacks a necessary middle for many of these songs. Still, when the top opens, his sound is obsessively appealing as he scoops unabashedly to get your emotional adrenaline flowing. However, the descending line was not his friend. He's most successful with popular Italian songs and operetta excerpts. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Rough diamond.......2001-08-23

My initial impression on hearing this CD was: fabulous voice; rough performances. That view is essentially unchanged. Lanza fans will adore the heroic singing and sheer bravado of these performances; purists will no doubt find much to criticize in Lanza's unrestrained delivery. In a sense, both sides are right, but there can be no mistaking that this is one of the most exceptional tenor voices on record. The upper register is dazzling and the middle and low registers are rich and satisfying. Lanza's breath control is second to none, and the evenness between his registers shows a technical expertise that is quite astonishing. If that wasn't enough, the singer's way with a song is unique - not a word is neglected as Lanza imparts each number with his trademark commitment and freshness. This is a voice to treasure.

Now the criticism: all of the performances contained here come from Lanza's wildly erratic Coca-Cola Radio Show of 1951-52. To be sure, these weekly performances yielded some amazing results, but sadly only a handful of these are to be found on this disk. (For a much more consistent "Coke" CD, check out the excellent When Day is Done.) The real reason for the inconsistency in performance was lack of time, and often Lanza was not sufficiently familiar with the material. The arrangements certainly didn't help, with the emphasis on big endings and impossibly high keys. Having said that, I doubt that any other tenor in similar circumstances could have produced as many dazzling performances as Lanza achieved.

Duds first: Diane is a dreadful rendition, and let's hope it never resurfaces on any other compendiums. The Neapolitan songs are rough - very rough in the case of Santa Lucia Luntana and Canta Pe Me - and vastly superior performances (and arrangements) of these and others can be found on Lanza's magnificent Mario! Lanza At His Best CD. O Paradiso is a decidedly inferior effort (especially compared to the tenor's rendition in the 1955 movie Serenade) and suffers from appalling orchestral accompaniment. The two songs from The Student Prince (Serenade and Deep in My Heart) suffer badly in comparison with Lanza's magnificent soundtrack, recorded the same year. Here both performances are rushed and unpolished, with a totally unneccesary "scream" on the word "dream" at the conclusion of Deep in My Heart. You'll Never Walk Alone is a ho-hum effort, and there is a far better take of this number to be found on the CD of the same title.

For my money, the CD's strengths are the magnificent Addio Alla Madre (a performance that rivals Lanza's celebrated 1950 recording and has an on-key ending this time!); a sensitive rendition of O Tu Che In Seno Agli Angeli (surely one of the most difficult arias in the repertoire); the beautifully realized Your Eyes Have Told Me So; a cheeky and exciting La Danza; and a far more delicate reading of Parmi Veder Le Lagrime than his 1950 commercial rendition.

The sound is extremely bright (sometimes excessively so) at the expense of Lanza's mellow timbre, but there is a real sense of presence throughout. As one Lanza admirer remarked on first hearing this disk: "This is a fantasy voice." And indeed it is. Buy this disk for its highlights and revel in the tenor's exuberant genius.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Forget Me? How could we Mario?.......2000-06-03

Lyndsay Perigo is spot on. This is the finest compact disc of Lanza's to date. The finest sound quality yet and boy what singing. Try if you dare, not to find "You Are Love" spine tingling and what about the sheer sensational neapolitan beauties. Let's not forget the wonderful arias on the albumn. Lanza had no vocal equal and probably never will. Listen to the disc, just once maybe and you will feel the same as many other fans of the greatest tenor voice EVER.

5 out of 5 stars More Lanza Bonanza.......1999-08-16

The lady is right you will need a cordiologist, but not for the reasons she says. This is Mario Lanza in top flight, every track is a gem. Included on this Cd is a selection from the full Lanza repertoire, opera, operetta, musical comedy and popular songs of the day all sung to perfection as only Mario could sing them. For anyone who is a Lanza fan or for anyone who has only just heard of the Mario Lanza name, this is the Cd for you, but beware once you listen to this you will want them all.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Mario.......1999-08-15

Barbara Eisner Bayer's review is pretentious nonsense. "No middle" for these songs & arias? Mario had a seamless transition from bottom to middle to top register, shown off to great advantage in these selections. Ms Bayer should have her hearing checked for mid-range frequencies. Lanza's performance of Addio Alla Madre on this CD is second to none. One could almost say the same for his 'Forza' recording. And was there ever singing more lush than Mario's Your Eyes Have Told Me So or Some Day I'll Find You? A problem with "descending" Ms Bayer? Listen to the conclusion to the latter, where Mario both descends & ascends with a facility & passion that reveal the moderns - the Three Tenors included - for the dead boring poseurs that they are. Thank goodness Mario Lanza is enjoying the renaissance that he is, so that we may be reminded of what glorious singing is really about, & once was.

4 out of 5 stars Summer Darling: I Know You ~ I Never Knew You (Independent, N/A).......2006-01-07

Brent Heywood, Heather Bray and D. Rossiter hail from the Inland Empire in sunny California. Although most people would equate the Beach Boys and happy sorts of pop music with this scene, Heywood and Bray seem to bend that stereotype and dig a little deeper. Heywood's lyrics are a major force on this disc. They are conflicted, beautiful, poignant, and troubling. His choice to express openness, both in respect to sadness and religion, is beautiful. On top of this, Frank Lenz lends a hand by mixing, recording and playing on the album. If that is not enough, Richard Swift makes an appearance playing keys on "Queen of Pasadena."

"You Always Sleep with Your First Love" opens I Know You ~ I Never Knew You with an alt-country feel and some sprinkles of Rhodes organ. It is a quiet and romantic piece with a touch of Frank Lenz style to it. The lyrics are open and subtly melancholy. Ben Heywood and Heather Bray play off of each other throughout the song. They croon:

      Drink yourself to death
It's the only way to test
      I have this theory
That no one goes quietly into the night
Hold me here whilst I sleep
The blood on my hands runs so deep
      I have this theory
That people give up without much fight
      You are my special one
You always sleep with your first love

It is clear from the very start of the album that Heywood is able to write fantastic lyrics. He paints imagery that is sorrowful and open. "The Painter" is a slow tempo rock song with shimmering guitar and a conversation between Heywood and Bray. It tells a story of lovers dealing with their past baggage and not wanting to let go of one another. The piano in this song is perfect and poignant. "Dressed Up for Funerals" is a beautifully stirring song. It is slow paced with sprinkles of piano and complimentary guitar. It is apparent from the very beginning of this album that Heywood is a profound lyricist who can take cliché topics and turn them into something beautiful and moving. Heywood croons "its not a sin if no one has to know / If you've got the thirst, then drink from me / If your heart is sick, then let it bleed / Hallelujah." "Year of Guilt" is a straightforward rock song with Heywood's innocent sounding vocals. This song shows the deeply conflicted religious dimensions of this album. Honestly, I don't want to impose any interpretation on the content of the song, but I think the listener does get a real sense of confusion and frustration from it. "Guilt" is certainly a brutally open song.

"Queen of Pasadena" begins with light synth and accompanying bass. It is a beautifully catchy song with strings sprinkled in with piano and shakers. Also, a treat for listeners on this song is that Richard Swift plays keys. "Gloria" begins with strong percussion and some sprinkles of guitar. It is another religiously conflicted song. What is really cool about this song is that there are Frank Lenz style BGV's. Again, I feel the need to type out the lyrics. They are beautiful.

      Jesus on Hollywood
I lost my faith to make him stay put
In temples built on saints ashes
      And praises sung by drunks
      Gloria
      Wedding bells above my head
I married rich to keep my stomach fed
      Lets buy it now
      Soon we might be dead
To the praises sung by drunks
The church is filled with paupers
While the streets are lined with kings
Did I really give all that I could?
While holding back all my precious things
      Praise his birth

This is Summer Darling's longest track on the disc and it is worth every second it is played. It is powerful, both lyrically and musically. The end of the song extends into an instrumental type piece that has beautiful piano, synth, strings, sprinkles of guitar, percussion, and many, many touches that feel like Frank Lenz's doing.

"Set Yourself Aflame" begins with a groovy, slightly distorted beat. This song really reminds me of some songs from Death Cab for Cutie or the Postal Service. The guitar work is similar and Heywood's vocals definitely have that boyish feel to them. I don't mean to make that sound like a direct copy of style. I really dig this song. It is well placed on the disc following the extended "Gloria." The strong, driving guitar really brings this song out, especially with the controlled feedback here and there. "Summer Scars" definitely has a classic rock feel to it. It is a strait forward rock song with just the right attitude in the music. There are fuzzy guitars and tambourine in the mix.

"Little Armenia" is a slow ballad with acoustic guitar, sprinkles of piano, fuzz, Lenz BVG's, and fantastic percussion. Again, this song is about love but also has that religious conflict that seems to be a theme throughout the album. "Math is Everywhere" begins with Heywood singing "you came out screaming bloody murder / nothing was so beautiful / Living never seemed so desperate / Growing old so impossible." It is a sad song about things just not adding up in life and dealing with difficulties as they come along. I suppose there could be more than one meaning to the song, but suicide seems to be a central theme. The tune is mid-tempo and the percussion build really accents the desperate nature of the lyrics. Heywood ends the song screaming in desperation "so are you!" It is a perfectly poignant ending to a melancholy album.

Summer Darling's "I Know You ~ I Never Knew You" is a strong first album with great musicianship and fantastic lyrics. It's an album that will move you.
