Quaker Oats Instant Metalcore.......2007-07-02
Just Add Water!
Seriously, this is some of the most boring, lifeless music i've ever heard. The vocalist is female, so what? Arch Enemy has one too, and they're 1000 times better. This doesn't change the fact that ITM sound like all the other bands in the sea of metalcore bands that plague the metal world now. More rejected At the Gates riffs, more br00tal breakdowns, a rhythm section that doesn't do anything special, and a singer resembling Amy Lee with laryngitis.
Throw this **** out and get Decapitated's Winds of Creation or Augury's Concealed instead. If you absolutely must have a band in this genre, pick up the Red Chord's Prey For Eyes or Despised Icon's Ills of Modern Man. Anything to not have to hear this again.
Awesome Band!.......2007-05-15
I first heard about them on Myspace & I was only able to hear one song but it got me on Amazon to buy their cd instantly. My favorites are Prayers & Daddy's Falling Angel. Awesome band & a good add to the cd collection
In This Moment.......2007-05-14
This is a great album. At first I was really turned off by the opening track, Maria Brink whispering to a rain background. As the next song started I was happy to find I didn't waste 15 bucks. Maria plays both sides of the vocal gambit; she lets seemingly unbridled anger burst out, and then switches to a softer chorus, reminiscent of Bands like Kittie and Radio Iodine. The Drummer is incredible, and the rest of the band ties together well and keeps there timing with Maria's highs and lows to allow for clear vocals. I `m looking forward to there next album.
breathtaking.......2007-05-11
the drummer is fabbbbulous, this band is meant to be together. they make it sound so easy. her voice gives me chills...........
Must buy!.......2007-04-23
Every song on this album rocks! It is hard to describe the music type... definitely hard core. Maybe Mushroomhead meets Kittie with a little bit of Iron Madenish riffs. If you are like me and like crazy screaming music with a little bit of actual singing you will love it!

An Epic Journey!.......2007-07-03
Thanks to s friend at my college for constantly bugging me to check out Symphony X, I have become a pretty big fan. I was able to get my hands on a copy of what many call their masterpiece "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy!" I'll be honest, this album in my opinion is one of the most epic pieces of art I have ever heard; and for me, ranks right behind "The Odyssey" as my favorite Symphony X album.
1. Of Sins And Shadows - This is just an amazing way to begin an album. Harmonizing vocals of heavy and rough, mixed with a higher tone make for a very melodic feel. The backing choir vocals also give it a very Bohemian feel (very Queen like). Awesome guitar work, tying the whole song together. Amazing! 5/5
2. Sea Of Lies - Keeping right with that feel, this track kicks in and pulls no punches. Again just awesome seemless instrumental work by the band fully harmonizing with the vocals. 5/5
3. Out Of The Ashes - I love this song. To me it seems to have a very deep meaning, but has an upbeat rocking way of making that message prominent. The backing vocals really add the element of having an "epic" feel to it, and again the guitar work is top notch. So far the band keeps the perfect score going! 5/5
4. The Accolade - This is the song that sold me on the album. After hearing part two on "The Odyssey" I knew I had to hear what they called part one. I was not disappointed in the least. Starting off slow and melodic, the song picks up steadily throughout. Awesome vocals and powerful lyrics, mixed with amazing instrumental work, make this song alone a classic! 5/5
5. Pharaoh - This is the first song on the album that took me more than one listen to really get into. A heavy tune to pick up where "The Accolade" leaves off. Heavy riffs and deep vocals make this song very prominent. May take a couple listens to like, but is a very cool song. 4.5/5
6. The Eyes Of Medusa - This track keeps right on pace with "Pharaoh." Heavy riffs mixed with very soft, yet very vibrant instrumentals. A lot of what the band does well is seen in this track. Like the previous track, it may take awhile to get into, but this song rocks. Very heavy and very dark! 5/5
7. The Witching Hour - This song is another very melodic output by the band. However, to me it seems just a bit rushed and cramped with a lot of material. Not a bad song at all, but a bit off kilter with the rest of the album. 4/5
8. The Divine Wings Of Tragedy - Ah, the epic of the album. A song in which the rest of the album was merely prepping you for. This song is a journey all its own! I love the beginning of the song esspecially, it is very different from any music you hear today. Very melodic and somewhat soothing! Than, enter the heavy power of Symphony X! Overall, a seven-part epic that will make you stand at attention and truly appreciate hat a masterpiece this album really is! 5/5
9. Candlelight Fantasia - I would call this a bonus track after the masterpiece beforehand. Again, the band shows no signs of slowing down in terms of having a lsting impact in their music! Love the melody and overall tone this song has, adding to an already steller album! 4.5/5
Overall, this album is a MUST HAVE for any and all fans of both Symphony X and/or Progressive Metal! In my opinion this album is one of those rare masterpieces that come along once every 10-12 years! Just pure brilliance!
This is their masterpiece!.......2007-01-10
Symphony X's finest moment is right here, one of those albums where you press play (or whatever your mp3 player uses as a play button) and let it flow. Even the 20-minute plus title track is excellent, and keeps you interested all the way. I'm a fan of power/prog metal, and I own the catalogues of bands like Dream Theater, Artension, Stratovarius, etc. This is my favorite of the bunch.
Best song: 2. Sea of Lies
Progressive metal you can not live with out.......2006-11-04
Symphony X - simply they rock, and this is a must have disc.
For any review to be honest you have to give the good with the bad, so lets get the bad out of the way first. The guitar tones get on my nerves after a while (borrowed straight from Diamond Dave). There is only so much my ear can take of that extremely heavy tone, it would be nice if it was mixed up a bit. Second - Like most bands they tend to take a rif or two, or an idea that has already been done before and make it theirs, For me not a big deal but worth mentioning in a review.
Now the good - Even with my previous comments I think they deserve a 5 and I believe this CD is a must have for anyone serious about their progressive metal collection.
The Vocals are that perfect blend of hard edge without that stupid (Grover) growl crap. This guy can actually sing. In my opinion he is one of the better metal singers - up there with the likes of Dio and the late Carl Albert (Vicious Rumors).
One of the things that makes this band so great is their compositions, with great use of each instrument, a good balance of going outside of the metal box with their use of symphonic instruments and even a hint or two of some modern Jazz. They are one of the better bands when it comes to mixing the Classical with the Metal (thus their name Symphony X).
This is one of those bands like Dream Theater where each of the musicians are top notch. Once this disc reaches your player it will stay there for a very long time.
Another Winner From Symphony X!.......2006-09-06
I have 4 Symphony X albums, and I believe I have found their best music. Divine Wings of Tragedy is surely one of my favorites of the 4 (Twilight in Olympus, The Odyssey, and V The New Mythology Suite being the other 3). Definitely worth all 5 stars. Symphony X makes lots of amazing music. I heartily recommend all 4 titles that I mentioned. They are all very full and rich, and will engage your brain. Very entertaining.
"On the edge of paradise/Tears of woe fall, cold as ice".......2006-07-25
Thus begins Part I of track 8, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, a 20 minute and 41 second extravaganza that on its own rates five stars. Part I is sang a cappella, with almost a barber shop quartet sound, and is followed by a power metal instrumental, the contrast working very well. Five additional parts complete the track, four of excellent vocals and another instrumental that covers more than six minutes. Normally that long of an instrumental would lose me, but there is so much variation here that the entire section holds my interest. This long track seems a harbinger of their greatest work, V: The New Mythology Suite (one of my top five). In fact, the words "Dies Irae" are printed in the insert at the end of the long instrumental, although I do not hear them voiced at any time. However, "day of wrath" (the translation of dies irae) is sang in the last stanza of the song preceding the long instrumental. As you probably know, these latin words are in the first and 11th song on V. Of Sins and Shadows and especially The Accolade are very good cuts also, but overall I cannot give the Divine Wings CD five stars. I can provide no technical reasons for this. It is simply a matter of after having listened to V, or The Odyssey, I am ready to listen to them again immediately. After listening to Divine Wings, the impression is that I want to listen to it again, but not until later. And basically that is how I decide all my four and five star choices. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

Customer Reviews:
Nice Album, Too Short.......2007-07-13
I gave this a four star rating based on the fact that the album is so short. If it would have just had more verses. A lot of the trax are only a minute and a half and the longest track clocks in just over 3 minutes. Tragedy is on it as far as his verses are concerned. Overall I feel this album just need to be longer. But great release, the beats and the verses are well done.
Tragedy Khadafi - The Death of Tragedy .......2007-06-28
Tragedy Khadafi's (A.K.A. Percy Chapman) latest album is "The Death of Tragedy" (2007) a short seventeen track release which features production from Havoc, Scram Jones, Betrayal, GQ Beats, Now & Laterz, Crack Val, Alchemist & 4th Disciple. The veteran Queensbridge MC provides an album for the streets, often reppin his record label 25 To Life Records. On the album's brief opener "G-Formation", Khadafi reps himself, and talks about the life he has led. Tragedy Khadafi follows it up with the blazing hot "The Truest", delivering some memorable verses backed by some distinct production from Scram Jones. Tragedy then puts his heart out on the introspective "I Am The Streets" recalling his past, this is a gripping track which ends to soon. "Murder by Numbers" is a grimy street story, while "Crime Legacy" is a short interlude. Tragedy rhymes over some familiar production from Scram Jones on "Sole Death Brothers", then talks about the feds and racism on the brief "Militant Mind State". Tragedy's brother Christ Castro drops in for a thugged out track in "Ryder Music", while repping himself on "Emaculate G's". Tragedy Khadafi reps himself painting some real life pictures on "Intimate Vision", which is followed up by one of the album's most creative track's in "Dejavu". Tragedy tells the story of a gun and it's travels, backed by some laidback production from Now & Laterz. Tragedy talks about hardships and betrayl he has faced on another standout in "If You Don't Know". Tragedy reps "25 To Life" on the album's longest track (which is not very long at all). Tragedy delivers some quotables on "Elbouhio of Death", then rhymes over Alchemist's sole contribution to this release "Milk Murder" (Tribute). A 12 second skit leads up the album's closer the solid "Mind State" feat. Killa Sha. I think this release is a step up from some of his mixtape material which has come out in recent years, at the same time I feel the same as the other reviewer, this album could have used more material. Overall "The Death of Tragedy" is a decent release, which should keep Khadafi's fan's satisfied for some time.
Trag, I want more!.......2007-06-24
Tragedy Khadafi's fifth album "The Death of Tragedy" comes a full four years since his last effort (his last three releases, Thug Matrix, Blood Ballads, and Thug Matrix 2 were all mixes/compilations). "The Death of Tragedy" really picks up right where Against All Odds and Still Reportin' left off. I've always found Tragedy Khadafi to be a very engaging MC, because he pours so much passion and emotion into his deep verses. From his days as Intelligent Hoodlum in the Juice Crew to his latter day Queensbridge narratives, he is dramatic and compelling at his best. Trag doesn't really bring much new to the table compared to his last efforts, but hearing more great music from him is certainly refreshing. His stories and narratives have lost none of their luster. The production is also familiar, a distinctly Queensbridge musical sound similar to the style Cormega, Capone-N-Noreaga, and Mobb Deep favor.
The only problem I really have with this album is the lack of material. While there are seventeen tracks, ten of them clock in at two minutes or less. It's an interesting format, and most of these songs are just one verse and out. They can make for quick, to the point, and effective songs, but with so many of them and only six or seven actual full-length songs, I was left gasping for more.
Following a short Havoc-produced intro, "G-Formation," with one dope verse, the album starts with "The Truest." I am really liking Scram Jones's production on this song, the guitars and pounding bass make for a great backdrop over which Tragedy drops some great verses. He raps about his love for rap and contributions to the game despite adversity. "I Am the Streets" is deep and passionate, and I like the production, but at just over a minute, I wish it was much longer. "Murder By Numbers" is a two-minute collabo, fine but a little forgettable. "Crime Legacy" is excellent...for its full 44 seconds. "Sole Dead Brothers" jacks the beat from the Run-DMC classic "Beats to the Rhyme." This song contains one of his finest performances, Tragedy's frenetic getaway tale is gripping. "Militant Mind State" barely clocks in at one minute, with one verse, and precedes "Ryder Musik." I like the tasteful production on this song, it's a solid cut. "Emaculate G's" is an okay collabo, and "Intimate Vision" is another sub-one-minute track with an awesome beat from GQ Beats. Trag's verse here is among the nicest on the album. "Dejavu" is one of the strongest points on the album. On rare ocassions in the past, Trag has shown himself quite capable of putting down a great love song, and this is one of those times. The breezy production is great and his lyrics are personal. The angry "If You Don't Know" is another short track, then comes "25 to Life." This song has a cool electronic styled beat, it's a good posse cut featuring his 25 crew. Haters are shut down on another one-verse track, "Elbouhio of Death," and on "Milk Murder (Tribute)," the Alchemist lends a boring beat for a decent track that's not very memorable. The disc closes on a good note, the Killa Sha collabo "Mind State."
"The Death of Tragedy" doesn't break any new ground for the Foul Mahdi, but it's another solid album of his signature product. I went to four retailers this week, none of which carried this album, until I finally settled with buying it on iTunes. There's no promo behind it, and it really dropped without a whisper, but his small yet dedicated legion of fans are sure to enjoy it just the same.

This album is still good, in spite of missing quality of sound a bit!.......2007-04-12
I would like to purchase the Japanese Edition, because I have the Brazilian (South-American Edition) and the Brazilian booklet is not beautiful as the Japanese. Detached tracks: "Angelique", "Loreleine", "Siren".
Despite the fact that T.O.T is the first band, whose genre is "The Beauty And Beast", the sound is not extremely amazing yet. It still misses something is related to this kind of music.
pure, brilliant, ethereal music!.......2006-10-30
what can i say?...brilliant, beautiful music!. one of the pioneers of the goth metal music scene in northern europe, theatre of tragedy (tot) reached the pinnacle of their career with the release of this album. those who expected a hardcore metal sound will be slightly dissapointed but for the majority of the listeners, i predict "aegis " will become one of the standout albums in their record collection. highlights includes the tracks "cassandra", "lorelei" & the stunning "siren" with only one track that could be called slightly dissapointing (bacchante)...
unlike in the earlier albums, raymond rohonyithe's growls can be heard no more. instead he gives a deliberately low key performance, more talking & whispering instead of growling & grunting, with the spotlight being given to the angelic voice of liv kristine. this album is also unusual in the sense that the lyrics are written in a kind of old english prose. some may find it a bit puzzling to begin with but with repeated listening, the lyrics will soon begin to make sense. ( well, most of them at least:) )
to listen to "aegis" is to listen to tot at their peak. unfortunately the band began to lose their musical bearings with their next albums as they tried to incorporate electronic club music into their releases. with the departure of liv kristine (who is now the lead singer of "leaves eyes" by the way) even tot will now be hard pressed to duplicate a successful musical creation, the kind which can be found in "aegis"...
Stunning!.......2006-09-13
This ablum is absolutely amazing. Liv Kristine has an amazing talent, her voice is flawless. There's not a weak song on this album, and my personal favourites are Siren and Angelique, but it was hard narrowing it down. I adore this ablum, it's a shame their new direction is not quite what I had hoped it would be. ToT is nothing without Liv; Nell does not compare at all. If you like self-titled and Velvet Darkness..., definitely get this album, it's perfect!
Aegis.......2006-09-04
Perhaps it is not necessary to write a review of this album since it has obviously received its fair share of praise, but for some reason I feel as though I should contribute. The music within this cd is perhaps the most beautiful, tragic and ultimately intoxicating thing I have ever heard... It's like listening to the sounds of a lost world, a world where everything was perfect and beautiful. But, you are listening to this through the eyes of a person who lives in a terrible world of chaos and hate, thus the entwined beauty and sadness. I do not find it necessary to outline each members' role in the band, since if you took even one of them away, the effect would be lost (truely a rare thing even in the metal scene). If there is a single complaint about the entire album, the only thing I can think of is that the snare drum is a hair too loud, but that may just be a matter of personal taste anyway. Buy this album. Let yourself be hypnotized by the beauty and sadness of the Theatre of Tragedy.
Beautiful!!.......2006-08-29
If you like your Goth metal with tons of texture and beautiful melodies this is a must have release.
The sound is just awesome and it truly is a wonderful listen!

Hope you are well-versed in your old-English before you listen to this. Actually, I have to say this is probably the most Vampiric album I have ever listened to - straight out of Dracula! The music is Beauty and Beast symphonic metal with similarities to Tristania and Sirenia. Excellent composition -but a little milder. Perfect for dark gloomy evenings! One of my favorite albums!
Velvet Darkness They Fear.......2006-08-02
Never have I tired, of Theatre Of Tragedy! They made the unbelievable dreamscape arura that people feel the need to compare it, and should be praised for what they conveyed not only in the music but the lyrics as well!! The "Shakespearian language". Not a lot of people/bands can put this language into acount and make it work, this band did it in real grace. This was [when liv lead] a very smart, monolithic album that can't be re-produced by any other neo "goth" by-product hot-topic helps put out!! PERIOD. Theatre Of Tragedy came out long before nightwish, get your facts straight!
"And When He Falleth" ~ Gothic Opera For A Post-Christian Age.......2006-03-09
Liv Kristine's angelic soprano voice counterbalanced by the gruff, demonic refrains of Raymond Rohonniy work together perfectly in the Theatre of Tragedy -9 track- CD, 'Velvet Darkness They Fear.' Unlike many other Goth bands that rely too heavily on their female vocalist to keep their audience involved, Raymond somehow manages to bring his discordant vocals into an adversarial, yet complimentary relationship with Liv's ethereal incantations. Truly light and shadow have become one.
Dark, Haunting, Unrelenting, Erotic and Beautiful. Everything you could ask for from a Goth/metal band.
unbelievable.......2005-12-30
This album is truly unique. There is nothing like it, and there will never be anything like it to come. Obviously with such singularity comes much weirdness that may be too much for many of you. Just keep an open mind.
When I first heard the CD, i just laughed. It's really not until the fourth or fifth listens that you really begin appreciating the method behind the apparent madness and start to think that the growling male vocals are actually necessary. This is a crazy parallel to draw, but it's almost like the dance group Aqua (also from Norway) who pair the soprano voice of their female singer with the tenor of a male so that neither voice dominates and you get tired of neither. Obviously the styles couldnt be more different, but the idea is still the same; Raymond is the dark side, Lynn is the light side, and the album is about their beautiful duet, both shadow and light, yin and yang.
now for some less abstract observations... this is one of my favorite gothic metal albums. in my mind, every song is good and i like a different one the best each time i listen. They do a good job of avoiding monotony, changing the speed of the songs from slow to fast, fast to slow quite often. They entertain you with spoken vocal parleys, which are cool but do get annoying after a while. But most importantly all the songs are well constructed, highly melodic and convey a distinct sense of emotion.
It is very difficult to review this CD but those are my thoughts on it. Bottom line: this is an underappreciated but very well constructed gothic metal dreamscape that i would encourage fans of Old Man's Child, Nightwish, and Within Temptation to try.
great contrast with the vocals.......2005-08-03
Lord chimp is as idiotic as his name, the angelic vocals of lev kristen sound great when combined with the harsh growls of death metal vocalists. Her voice sounds great mixed with these guys, great with leaves' eyes but my favorite was when she mixed her vocals with dani filths growls, so check out these other ones as well as buying this c.d. the contrast sounds great!!!!

Solid Second Release.......2006-12-30
The Black Maria have successfully followed up Lead Us To Reason with a solid performance on A Share History In Tragedy. Though vocalist Chris Gray doesn't really vary his voice too much, he still manages a unique sound in comparison to other bands. (One area it would be interesting to hear him explore would be more screaming a la Atreyu's Alex Varkatzas. He lets one scream loose on track 2 that sounds great.) The guitar on this album isn't anything shredtacular but is more used as an instrument of art as many bands don't use it today.
Although all the tracks are pretty solid, the first few times listening to it tracks 1 (The Perilous Curse), 2 (Waking Up With Wolves), 4 (Van Gogh), and 8 (Living Expenses) seemed to stick in my mind clearly. Definitely an album worth buying and if you're looking for a new band that's a mixture of alternative and hardcore The Black Maria is one of your best bets.

Good gothic metal.......2006-02-25
This is TOT in the days before they, like Samael, sucummbed to some weird fascination with electronica and ruined it for everyone. A nice mix of male growls and female soprano vocals over some nice if not overly complex riffs. (I always feel like the focus in these sorts of bands in on the vocals and keys anyway, so impressive guitarwork is almost a bonus.) I don't feel like it is as memorable as some Tristania or Sins of Thy Beloved, but for anyone who has not yet heard TOT or is just looking for another addition to his/her collection of gothic metal, this is a good purchase. By the way, as a side note, I did my phd comps in Renaissance literature, and the lyrics are definitely not in some Shakespearian English, as some reviewers say. It's really pretty much nonsense. So I recommend just sitting back and enjoying the music.

***** - FIVE ROCK SOLID STARS
==============================
WOW. That's really the best word to describe this debut. No question a 5 star effort. I've never really heard music like this before. It's totally unique in every sense of the word....
Call it Folk Death Metal with female overtones, call it true Goth Metal, or call it whatever you think best describes this. One thing is certain, it's a MASTERPIECE OF MUSIC....
There's so much here, you really can't get all of it with one listen, or maybe even a thousand for that matter. There are layers of sound here, and it's a deep sound with some of the heaviest, and spookiest riffs this side of hell...
Liv Kristine, who is now fronting Leaves' Eyes, another highly recommended purchace by the way, is amazing here. This is some of her most beautiful work in my opinion. Her voice always seems to have a sad, yet rather uplifting feel to it. It's a truly incredible mixture of sounds comiing together here, that one must actually hear it to believe it....
I'm a new fan of this kind of music, and I starter out listening to Lacuna Coil. After spinning their CD's a million times over{LOVE THEM}, I needed, and started searching for something similar / different if you know what I mean...
I bought stuff from Nightwish{EHH??}, After Forever{DECENT}, and some Within Temptation{GOOD} in hopes of quenching that Coil thirst, but none of those bands really captured me or my full attention....
Then I found Theatre Of Tragedy. I'm highly satisfied once again. This is their debut, and it's a MUST PURCHACE. Check out Leaves' Eyes while you're at it, you will not be disappointed...
Highly recommended.......2005-05-23
I got this album the other day with Zeromancer's Eurotrash, and both were great, but I find myself listening to this one a bit more, if I must say.
I already purchased Aegis awhile back and was very impressed with that remarkable album. I was no less floored when I popped this disc in. TOT make very beautiful, subtle gothic music, avoiding the overdone vocal sections and relying on gentle melodies that really leave lasting chills. Liv Kristine is my favorite female siren by a mile - and this self-titled debut captures some of her best moments. She sings very high-pitched most of the time (actually, she sings quite differently here than on her most recent album Lovelorn, I'm talking about her other band Leaves' Eyes of course), but her melodies are entrancing, and not too far off from those of new age goddess Enya. Raymond Rohonyi sounds great when growling (I much prefer this voice over his "newfound" English accent) and complements Liv well, as many have mentioned before. Guitars and bass are, well, guitars and bass - but you have to keep in mind that TOT are more vocal-dominated, like most other gothic metal bands, and everything else just sort of complements the singing. Actually, I think the guitars on their more recent industrial efforts sound a tad better, even if hardcore fans will stone me for saying this. The keyboards, courtesy of Lorentz Aspen, have always sounded great, without being too dominant. Some of his best work lies in track 5, "...A Distance There Is..." - the song is layered with many beautiful piano sections and work side-by-side with Liv's angelic singing. My only problem is that the production is a tad thin, but bad production hardly ever lessens the experience when the music is this good - and it is.
Personal highlights for me include the sensational "A Hamlet for a Slothful Vassal", the beautiful "Hollow-Hearted, Heart-Departed", the soothing "...A Distance There Is..." and the closing "Dying - I Only Feel Apathy."
I love all of TOT's work, including what I've heard from Musique and Assembly (although they unfortunately chose a career suicide path when changing their style). The debut is no exception. Recommended to everyone sick of listening to Lacuna Coil's Comalies for the hundredth time.
9.9/10
Better than VDTF.......2004-08-24
Theatre of Tragedy's self-titled is their best work aside from Aegis, in my humble opinion. Anything after Aegis is pure trash, as we all know, and Velvet Darkness They Fear is pretty bland after a few listens. But the band's debut is pretty darn good. The use of cello on a few songs, combined with excellent piano pieces, really adds to the flavor. Theatre of Tragedy never did anything spectacular with their guitars, except distort or downtune the hell out of them to make them sound 'heavy,' but hey it all works out. "Sweet Art Thou" has one of the best intros I've ever heard, and at only 3:58, it should've been a precedent on where TOT and other 'doom' metal bands ended their songs. I hate these nine-minute draggers that have one chord and one riff, and cheesy synth effects (I'm referring to bands like Ashes You Leave and TSOTB, not TOT), so at least Raymond and company knew when to end a song. The growls are good as usual, although a little too heavily distorted. Liv's voice is okay, nothing special. Lyrically it's pretty good, especially if you like Shakespearean poetry. I highly recommend this and Aegis if you want to hear good Theatre of Tragedy. I still think Tristania (at least in the Veland era) is a million times better... sorry TOT worshippers.
Unique mix of death metal and female soprano.......2002-01-21
First off, this is a great CD. I stumbled across it by mistake looking at the Nightwish similar bands page of cdnow.com. I'm very glad I did, because so far, this CD has not left my CD player. It's really that good. I myself go for the more unique sounding bands (meaning I go for stuff made outside the USA), and this has uniqueness in droves. There happens to be two vocalists in this band, each on separate sides ofthe spectrum. One is a female soprano that sounds very angelic, which is very ironic in light of the second vocalist. He just happens to be one of those people who can growl and sing at the same time, and because of these death metal inspired vocals, he starts sounding fairly demonic (not to say that this is a bad thing). Most would think that this would be the equivalent of mixing an acid and a base, but it sounds amazing to hear both of them going off on each other at the same time, both of which ryhming. And just for fun, they use arcaic english that actually seems to make sense, and comes off as if it were written by the great Shakespear himself. One of the most powerful tracks, however, does not feature the demonic vocals or guitar chords, it only features the soothing voice of Liv and an amazing piano player. However, this CD is not for every taste, unfortunatly. Some of my friends refuse to listen to it. But, if you're looking for something unique, pick up this album.

you should buy this..........2006-03-28
i can't stop listening to it. everyone wants to borrow it. i could go on and on about how amazing it is, but that's really not my style. i took a chance from the reviews here and one in blackbookmag and i was blown away.
Unusual, varied, experimental, and delightful........2006-01-05
I first heard of this band upon hearing Baby Boom on XM Radio's XMU station. I enjoyed the humor and the harmony of that song enough to gamble on this CD. It didn't disappoint.
The songs have a sort of unpolished feel to them, which works really well in this case. Each song has a slightly different mood and feeling to it, and the style wanders around a bit from mellow to heavy.
The lyrics are interesting, though not as complex or deep in some songs as in others. The lead singer's voice often dips into a humorous crack at times, as if he is an actor on an after-school special. It somehow works, though, because the album never takes itself too seriously while still presenting some interesting ideas and a variety of music styles.
This is definitely not an album that will have wide appeal. The listener has to be willing to put up with a somewhat experimental style and put aside some traditional expectations. I've had friends describe some of the songs in different ways, from cute, to intelligent, to a little too weird. That suits me just fine.
Already one of my favourite albums.......2005-11-19
In answer to another reviewer, the tracks here are re-recorded versions of those on the LWOA EP and more recent. The band were aiming for a more 'live' feel, I think, and after a few listens I reckon it works well. You're getting three more songs than we are in the UK (Howling at the Moon, The Great Unknown and Here Comes the Suffering), which is why I've ordered from Amazon US.
Short review: fantastic stuff, and well worth importing.
Longer review: the biggest draw of The Crimea for me is Davey's lyrics -- acerbic, witty and pragmatic words set to cheerful indie pop. The most poppy songs here are Girl Just Died (a wonderful guitar-driven tune) and Lottery Winners On Acid, although tracks such as White Russian Galaxy, Baby Boom, Miserabilist Tango and the Beach Boys inspired Bad Vibrations also bounce and glide along smoothly.
It's the recently-written numbers such as Losing My Hair and Gazillions of Miniature Violins that are a particular draw for fans who've been following the band for a few years, though. They stand as evidence that the band have plenty more to give after this album.
One last thing... at the time of writing, the album hasn't been given a label-promoted release (that's due in 2006) so the copy I got from a Marketplace seller is a promotional copy in a card sleeve. If you absolutely can't live without a jewel case, check with the retailer before you order.
You certainly won't be disappointed with the music, though!
Brilliant alt/indie rock.......2005-10-06
After hearing the Lottery Winners On Acid EP, I had to get Tragedy Rocks. Four of the five EP tracks are on this album. Although Tragedy Rocks has a later release date than the EP, I'm guessing the overlapping tracks are older than the EP versions. The production here sounds slightly rawer, not that it really matters. Anyway, I haven't been this excited about a new band in a long time. The rich textures and diverse range of tempos are impressive. There's no gimmick or formula here, just talented musicians making great rock music. I can't wait for more.
