Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Worth adding to "Silver Apples" and "Wild Bull".......2003-05-07
There was a time when I first got a couple of CDs of Morton Subotnick's electronic music. One of them has the 2 early masterpieces "Silver Apples of the Moon" and "The Wild Bull." The other had "Touch" and "Jacob's Room." Both on the Wergo label. I've read how "Jacob's Room" stunk before I bought the CD. I was aware of that. I listened to it twice and agree that "Jacob's Room" stunk (is that why it's no longer in stock?). Later, however, I notice this Mode CD containing "Touch" and other electronic works that are NOT "Jacob's Room." It must've gotten on the market shortly after I bough the Wergo CD. So I sold the Wergo CD at an auction (more than what I paid for, and I didn't ask for much) and got this Mode CD when I had a chance. On it, there's "Touch", "A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur" and "Gestures: It Begins With Colors." If you like "Silver Apples" as well as "The Wild Bull" then you may wanna get this Mode CD. This is Volume 1 of his works. I wonder when there'll be volume two...
Oh yes, you may also wanna get the New Albion CD, "The Key To Songs / Return." Another worthy addition of Subotnick's electronic music.

happiness takes place in small piano tunes.......2001-07-24
these short piano pieces are simple, but absolutely not boring. gurdjieff and de hartmann wrote some of the most thoughtful and sincere music you'll ever hear. I found this CD over a year ago and it's one I return to over and over again.
Cacaphonic Harmonious.......2001-07-15
Truly an exposition of beautiful "objective" listening. This music will not put you to sleep. Transitions are abrupt and engaging throughout the score's entirity. I play the music whenever I find myself searching for something to do or am bored. This music will consume all negativity and poke the listner to begin a stirring sensation in their own mentation. The music is not sophisticated or eligant by no means, but has a way about it which will intrige one to listen again and again.

In the House of Williams.......2006-01-23
Ellington -- meets Blakey and his Messengers -- meets the Miles Smiles Quintet -- distilled via the excellent early nineties sextet of the grand eminence and standard bearer of jazz, Mr. Marsalis. Thoroughly satisfying composition and ensemble work throughout, highlighted in my opinion by the Todd Williams penned "In the House of Williams" which would make a dead jazz lover shout!
Mr. Marsalis seems to elicit polar reactions from critics and the public. Musically speaking, Marsalis is the truth. End of discussion.
He's supremely talented. He's done his homework -- and then some. He is the direct linkage to, descendent from, and obvious heir of the most serious, talented and prolific progenitors of this American popular and classical artform.
Marsalis is no gimmick, fad or one trick pony. His vision is wide; his accumulated knowledge and studied understanding of his chosen artform runs deep. He is a preeminent instrumentalist, composer and ensemble leader. He is a musical and cultural intellectual. History will assuredly prove his critics both shortsighted and tasteless.
Armstrong, Ellington, Bird, Monk, Miles, Trane, Marsalis? Who else in the last twenty years has come close to responsibly assuming any part of this mantle?
Better ask somebody, or better yet listen for yourself -- then get on board, or get left behind.
If you haven't already, especially for those who feel Marsalis belabors traditionalism, don't sleep on his Citi Movement or The Marciac Suite.
And, don't be afraid of beauty.
Consistent Swinging Beauty.......2004-05-04
I recently picked up this recording, and already am wondering what took me so long. I have over twenty Marsalis recordings and think I stayed away from his "Soul Gestures" series so long becuase of bad critical reviews that I'd read and been influenced by. Shows what they know because this album is full of startlingly beautiful blues and swing. I can see why someone might dismiss this album after only one listen, which is what I imagine most critics rely on for their views, becuase the album's five tracks have similar tempos and feelings that could cause a casual listener to become bored or disenchanted with the recording. But keep playing this one because its beauty unfolds like the best art does, slowly, improving with each new listen. Some find Marsalis to be a complacent composer, throwing out whatever comes into his head and passing it off for tunes, but they're missing the point entirely. Read the linear notes. Read Marsalis' own books, and for God's sake, listen well to his recordings, and you'll find that he's way too smart and way too talented to release anything that isn't full of structure and careful planning. This, if anything, is the one drawback to some of Wynton's recordings--they're almost too planned out. But that feeling takes a distant back seat to the joy that comes through in his best recordings, of which Levee Low Moan is one.
Marsalis and his partners, including Marcus Robers, piano, Reginad Veal, bass, Herlin Riley, drums, Wess Anderson, alto, and Todd Williams, tenor and soprano, are so locked into the grooves on this five tunes, that it's almost scary. They have such a deep respect for the groove and never try to push these numbers too far for the sake of a cheap thrill or a flurry of notes that they could easily execute but would cheapen the chosen tempos and feelings. Like Stevie Ray Vaughan learned and spoke about, a slow blues is a lot harder to play than a fast one, even though it sounds like the opposite would be true.
Check out the other nice reviews that folks have written about his gem and do what they recommend, pick it up, put it on repeat and relax into this one. Glorious.
An undisputed Masterpiece............2004-01-28
Put on some headphones and set this cd on repeat. I loved Jmood and Black Codes, but this is the Wynton that I love. Easily my favorite album of all time and I love everything from Prince, to Marilyn Manson, to Swedish Komeda, and Miles. I have turned many people onto this disc, especially horn players of all walks who are just blown away by this.
What are you waiting for; find out what it's all about.
Outstanding.......2000-07-07
I purchased this CD largely due to the other Amazon reviews. I own more than ten Marsalis recordings and this is by far the best, probably in my entire music collection. All five songs are excellent. It is the most relaxing, well though-out album ever. Not one musician misses a note, and the balance of the instruments is perfect. It is a better representation of jazz than other Marsalis recordings because the trumpet playing is excellent, yet every other instrument is given just as much time in the songs and is played with just as much skill. 5 stars.
Grossly underrated.......1999-07-06
I never could understand why most critics believe Wynton Marsalis took a huge step back with his "Soul Gestures In Southern Blue" recordings. I am even more baffled on as to why they consider this installment (vol 3) to be the weakest of the series. I personally believe "Levee Low Moan" is one of Wynton's finest, and I think it is a much more solid entry than "Joe Cool's Blues", any of his "Standard Time" recordings, and even "Black Codes".
ALL of the songs on this album are memorable. There is some serious swinging on the title track and a MUCH improved version of "So This Is Jazz, Huh?" Perhaps the crown jewel of this album is "Superb Starling": an odd-metered beauty of a ballad featuring beautiful lyricism and a smoldering saxophone duel that will make you fall in love with jazz all over again. The album overall also includes some beautiful piano work, courtesy of Marcus Roberts.
"Levee Low Moan" is easily Marsalis's most overlooked and most underappreciated album. Give this album a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Another underrated gem.......1999-07-06
Wynton Marsalis's "Soul Gestures in Southern Blue" series has been seen as the dark horse of his discography, and to this day, I'll never understand why.
"Uptown Ruler" opens with a majestic procession that leads into the title track, an odd-metered blues, which is perhaps the high point of the album. The album then sinks into the smoldering world of bluesy ballads before finally building to a climax with "Down Home With Homey". Be sure to check out everyone's solo on this track.
The final song is a grand restatement of the opening theme, this time with all horns proudly playing. You will not be disappointed by this CD, although his quintet on this album does have a distinctly different sound from most of his other groups.
Brilliant!.......1999-03-23
I own many of Marsalis' discs and this one is my fave. It is near perfect if not perfect. "The Burglar" is unbelievable - check it. The beginning and continuing background rythym is superb and matchless. This disc bangs booty.

Slow down for this one.......2003-09-30
I like all three of these albums that came out together - (but Uptown ruler is a little weak). This is a moody set that swings and stretches out.
Give it time and relax into this one. The band is so tight - try to take in all the parts that play off each other and build on top of each other. This is the period when the band was at their best.
After you buy these three disks, check out the uneven but inexpensive live at the Village Vanguard.
Cool and melancholic.......2002-03-24
Two words: great album!
Lay down and relax, it will clear your head, no doubt about it. This is for those hot days or even better hot nights to cool you down. Practically an all-ballad CD, blues influenced and the guys aren't rushing things so it's pretty slow. Hard to pick a favorite, because they're all good. And how can they be not when there's Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Marcus Roberts (piano); Bob Hurst (bass); Elvin Jones, Jeff Watts (drums). Well if a had to pick a favorite I'd say it's `So This Is Jazz. Huh' or `L.C. on the cut'. Wynton Marsalis and the blues.
Good, but not great.......1999-07-06
Although most critics believe Wynton Marsalis's "Thick in the South" is the strongest third of his grossly underrated "Soul Gestures In Southern Blue" series, I must disagree. The band plays well, but the songs just aren't as gripping as the other ones are in volumes 2 and 3 (Uptown Ruler and Levee Low Moan, respectively).
The strongest part of this album is easily the title track. Wynton wastes no time busting into his high-octane solo, which is followed by an equally intense performance by Joe Henderson. The original version of "So This Is Jazz, Huh?" is also a part of this album, but it pales in comparison to the second version on "Levee Low Moan".
Overall, with the exception of the title track, this is only a lukewarm album. If the title track did not exist, then I would not recommend it.
Outstanding!.......1999-03-23
This is one of Marsalis' best and unfortunately gets overlooked too often. It bootysmacks!

Fame, fame, fame ..........1999-12-28
They're known best for "Run, Run, Run," included on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets collection, but The Gestures (known as The Jesters before the guys realized there were a few more garage bands just past the land of 10,000 lakes and half of them had the same moniker aparition) have a bit more to offer than the average cuffed-jeans, mid '60s rockers. Bright, almost-pinched harmonies recall The Zombies or Jan and Dean more than such contemporaries as the Sonics or the Seeds, but The Gestures toss in a few tricks to keep their bubblegum from going stale. Check out Sundazed's reissue if for nothing more than the boppish "It Seems to Me," which is the original B-side to "Run ... " and succinctly self-deprecating in ways modern mopesters could not muster without medication (or lack of).

one of my favorite bands of all time. i think if you dont like them i wouldnt like you and you are a moron. Megalomania is my favorite song ever written, If you are an athiest punkrocker you will love that song and this band. They are a mixter of dash Uk82 with and dash of OI! Just a flat out great punkrock band. in the vien of Blitz, Partisans, Mau Maus.
EXCELLENT OI !/MELODIC 80'S HC PUNK.......2006-07-18
Of a very particular kind. This unique sounding collection features over an hour of the most original and fresh sounding 80's hardcore punk. Massive choruses in atypical non-oi, no-singalong fashion, a lead singer with a gravelly voice, powerful, highly skilled two-guitar arrangements with plenty of metally/rock'n roll solos and machine gun drumming, this collection of the self titled lp + a lot of 7 ''and demos covering the 82 - 98 ! period starts out in what reminds a little of Bad Religion but rapidly develops into a speedy melodic mayhem of unrelentless heaviness. The sound leaves a lot to be wished in the upper treble department but the music more than makes up for it. A CRIMINALLY underrated brit-punk band hailing from the early 80's.
Great British punk.......2005-12-20
Everything you need by The Blood (they became a marginal metal band shortly thereafter). In the same vein as Peter and the Test Tube Babies, these guys were true musicians without losing the manic punk sensibility. Fans of Machine Gun Etiquette Damned will especially love this.
get this record if you like UK punk!.......2005-07-28
This is one of the best UK oi/punk records and maybe the most underated. This album is simply brilliant. These guys knew what they were doing. Its fast, hardcore, and melodic at the same time. If you like oldschool british punk rock this album is a must have.

Album Description
Ann Arbor, Michigan, seems an unlikely site for the establishment of a major avant-garde festival that would shake the new-music community. Tucked away in America's heartland, the city is equally removed from the Eastern metropolises whose artists pride themselves on sensing the pulse of the times, and from the nonconformist West Coast. Yet during the 1960s Ann Arbor played host to one of the most extraordinary adventures in American music history: the annual ONCE Festival and its nexus of related activities.
The primary aim of ONCE's founders--Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda--was to create a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge music. To this end they were phenomenally successful. Performers and composers--whether little-known or renowned--embraced the endeavor, demanding almost nothing in return. Perhaps most important, however, ONCE acted as a creative stimulus for its organizers. Scavarda describes the adventure as an explosion of pent-up energy: "Suddenly we could write anything we wanted and have it heard." And they did. The ONCE composers--and many guest artists--wrote a host of new works, some experimental, others more traditional.
What united the ONCE composers was their exploration of sound, whether through the medium of extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic (or electronically modified) timbres, or the intersection of musical sounds with those of the environment.
A major slice of ONCE's rich musical legacy--35 works constituting six hours of music--is presented here, almost all for the first time. These pieces are as diverse in style as they are compelling in expression. This landmark set, the most comprehensive document ever released of this legendary event, is an opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary music to hear history in the making. Included in the set is a 140-page booklet with a lengthy scholarly essay by musicologist and biographer Leta Miller and numerous rare photos of ONCE personages and performances.
