For parents, listening to Dan Zanes provides not only instant Raffi relief, but also the warm sense of belonging to the right crowd. On each disc he trots out a posse of cool friends like Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, and Lou Reed and he delivers his openhearted lyrics with the rare roots-rocker's gift for stirring grace into grit. It would seem that the release of his fourth record, House Party would be ripe for a backlash--how long can the hokey conceit of a bunch of aging groovsters banging out kids' tunes in a Brooklyn basement hang onto its charm? Looks like we'll have to wait and see, because House Party rages on with the same winning, welcome-to-our-homespun-revolution vibe as its predecessors. Deborah Harry takes a twirl on "Waltzing Matilda," Bob Weir fires up the "Wabash Cannonball," and Angelique Kidjo bids "Jamaica Farewell," but the Zanes originals are this record's proving grounds, and they pin the tail on the donkey with bulls-eye precision. Contributions from returning regulars Barbara Brousal and Rankin' Don--the best couple of favors a party could hope for--send Zanes' campaign to become the guy who turned lampshade-wearing into a kindergarten fashion craze soaring. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Dan's first album...Wiggle the Wiggles out of your CD Player.......2007-06-12
You may have seen Dan on various spots on Sesame Street, I first saw him in his yellow suit, singing Jump Up. This album continues the wonderful music that my daughter has turned my wife and my self on to. The beats are there, and the lyrics are very catchy.
So do yourself a favor, swap out Wiggles or Barney for Dan and his Friends, and enjoy kids music once again.
Thank goodness for Dan Zanes!!!!!!.......2007-05-21
Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!
When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.
After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!
My daughters favorite!.......2007-05-14
I bought this CD since Dan Zane is on the Disney Channel. My daughter absolutely loves it! She asks to hear "House Party" all day every day. We dance and sing and it has brought a lot of fun into our house.
Dan is her new best friend.......2007-05-13
We always look for music that is entertaining and enriching for both the toddler and the parent. We had heard Dan sing before on "For the Kids" CD and thought we'd give it a try. We all get down to Dan Zanes House Party! This CD never leaves the car player. The cover is a delightfully drawn board book of Dan & his entorage Whoopin' it up all over town. My 2 year old will "read" the book to me, explaining the pictures and making connections to the music. It's great.
Kids love it.......2007-03-09
My son, aged 6 and my daughter, almost 2 - love to dance to "House Party Time" in the morning. It really gets them going. They are big Dan Zanes fans.

In A Glass House is an experience!.......2007-06-01
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often asked for my views on various rock and roll albums from the 60's and 70's.
When it comes to Gentle Giant it is a pleasure to write about them. I have been collecting every release for over three decades.
"In A Glass House" which could be argued as the best album Gentle Giant recorded was never released on vinyl in America. This hurt the band and let numerous progressive rock fans in the dark about a tremendous effort.
For those of you that have enjoyed the sounds of Gentle Giant over the years but would not consider yourself a true believer you can be convinced with four listenings to I"n A Glass House." On the first one play the CD straight through without any interruption. The sounds of The Runaway, Experience, and the title track will leave you speechless. On the second review listen to the vocals of Derek Shulman. No other singer sounds like him and no other could take his place in the band. For listen number three concentrate on the keyboard-player Kerry Minnear. His brilliance will consume your thoughts and you will be impressed how well he picks his spots to shine. For the forth and final time you open the CD player have the ears focus on the guitar of Gary Green. Another superlative musician that doesn't overplay but can sparkle when the passage calls for it.
They don't make albums like this anymore and we certainly won't see another group like this one. Not only is the music as good as it gets but the fidelity of the recording is worth to be part of the experience.
Be well always,
Craig Fenton

One of the best by Gentle Giant.......2006-10-21
I have to admit, I've been listening to this CD constantly for the past few weeks. It's just that awesome. I'm a newbie to the whole prog rock thing, but man, this CD rocks!

Gentle Giant's 5th release is truly amazing........2006-10-19
Everything about this semi-conceptual album from 1973 is as close to perfect as you're going to find if you're a fan of progressive rock or art rock. Not all of Gentle Giant's albums were conceptual in nature, but this one is, and everything from the original packaging to the lyrics and arrangements tells you without a doubt that you will be taking a close look at the darker side of the human psyche with this music.
The opening salvo of "The Runaway" sounds of breaking glass and is a reference to the old saying that people in Glass Houses should not throw stones. The song itself is a rather heavy tune by Gentle Giant standards, but has some well-placed quieter moments which utilize the band's trademark recorders and flutes. The next track, "An Inmate's Lullaby" is a montage of the thoughts which might run through the mind of someone who has been institutionalized due to a major psychotic break, and you can almost imagine someone's tortured inner child being put to music.
"Way of Life" is a song about introspection and finding answers to one's inner demons, and has a quick tempo but isn't quite as heavy as the opening track. It's more jazzy sounding, and probably the most upbeat song of an otherwise dark album. "Experience" shows off the talent that Gentle Giant had for medieval-sounding arrangements, and is a song about how difficult experiences in one's early life can contribute to further problems as one ages and tries to succeed in the world. The transitions from a 3/4 shuffle to a 4/4 angular rock feel are just flawless, and the arrangements here are just some of the finest the band ever developed.
There is a major shift in mood to the next track, the charming and eloquent "A Reunion". Those of you who are familiar with more recent rock material from the band Pearl Jam should give a listen to the track "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" to get an inkling of what this track is about. While stylistically they are not quite the same, I would not be at all surprised to learn that this Giant tune was the inspiration for the Pearl Jam one, as they both are in reference to a reunion of two people (who perhaps were very much in love with each other so long ago) after a period of many decades. The style of "A Reunion" is very much like a turn-of-the-century (20th, that is) parlor song or waltz, with excellent string arrangements and Phil Shulman's mellow vocals.
The album concludes with the title track, "In a Glass House". The track is over eight minutes long and is a perfect summation of all which came before. Throughout there are masterful time signature transitions as well as breaks between acoustic and electric arrangements, with more of that medieval feel thrown in occasionally for good measure. All of this is presented without any confusion other than the mental torment - and hopeful escape therefrom - which is being conveyed by the feel of the piece. As the track fades to silence, Gentle Giant come back with a quick montage of about 1-2 seconds from each track, followed by one more hit of shattering glass which echoes away to final silence. Perhaps there is no escape from the glass house?
Anyone who is not familiar with the amazing Gentle Giant needs to make this among the first of the band's catalogue that they sample. I guarantee that if you give this chance you will not be disappointed. And, to mark the band's 35's anniversary, the newest reissue of this album includes bonus live material of "The Runaway/Experience" and "In a Glass House". The quality of these recordings is as good as anything live which was released in the early 70's (think Yessongs or ELP's "Welcome Back..." triple album masterpiece). Derek's vocals are very sharp and clear, and the band was in excellent form for these performances.
a near perfect album.......2006-08-14
gentle giant's output can be summarized quite easily: the first three were interesting, but lacked focus. the next five were all amazing. the final three were disappointing (to say the least!) this was their fifth release,so...it rules. not originally available in the US, in a glass house shows GG at the peak of their power. it remains one of the finest examples of seventies progressive rock. it's hard to pick a favorite from the middle five, but if you put a gun to my head, i would pick this one.
Peak Giant.......2006-01-25
This work contains all the best elements of Gentle Giant music as well as representing the band at a very peak period. I cannot imagine what the record company was thinking when this title originally came out in 1973. Not releasing this album in the US was a huge mistake and a great disservice to music fans.
At any rate, we can be thankful it is now available and in a nicely remastered form. This album should be a welcome addition to any Progressive Rock fan's collection, especially those who already find themselves appreciating Gentle Giant's many other excellent offerings.
In a Glass House starts off strong and does not let up until the last sound of crashing glass at the end of track 6. There is a theme running through the compositions which is very nicely summarized in the closing track.
I really like the entire Gentle Giant catalogue; however, with each listen, I find myself thinking that In a Glass House has to be at the very top of their musical accomplishments and that is saying something when you consider the quality of their other efforts.
Highly recommended.

essence of Fellini..........2007-05-09
As evocative as any perfume, this CD brings forth clear images of the films for which this music was written. Makes a charming background for any party, seemingly brainless fun, yet sophisticated and delightful. Also good to cook to...
Excellent!.......2007-04-22
For this release, Silva Screen released their previous disc of Music from Fellini films, along with the best tracks from Nic Raine's 1998 recording of the complete score of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paul Bateman's 2001 Godfather Trilogy disc, along with a few new tracks and other tracks from Silva's back catalog of music.
The last two tracks of the first disc, and the entire second disc is devoted to Fellini Films. All of the Fellini tracks are from 1993's "Music From Fellini Films", with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic (then credited as the Czech Symphony), with the exception of "Toby Dammit" which was recorded for this disc with Mario Klemens conducted.
"The Taming of the Shrew" is from Silva Screen's successful 2001 "Shakespeare at the Movies" set, while Death On The Nile and the Glass Mountain have been newly recorded for this set.
In conclusion, if you had the first disc of Rota/Fellini music then perhaps this would not be worth it, but overall this is a superb collection with that previous release in its entirely (remastered in HDCD surround sound, I might add), along with the best tracks from the Godfather Trilogy and Romeo and Juliet, with some more films sprinkled about, its a must-have, for anyone who wants a taste of Rota for less than $25.
"premier composer of Italy (1911-1979) ~ Nino Rota".......2003-08-26
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the gems by composer Nino Rota, conducted by Derek Wadsworth, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mario Klemens. This latest release "The Essential Nino Rota Film Music Collection", has all the romantic and poetic scores ever conceived. Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbiding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.
Rota has the ability to capture the moments from each cue in his scores with "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", "THE GLASS MOUNTAIN", "LA DOLCE VITA" and "ROMEO & JULIET, the tapestry is fine and the weave is just right. That's just for starters, listen and recall the score from "THE GODFATHER" and "THE GODFATHER II", one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen, the music from Rota was a large part of this. And Disc Two with "THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA", "AMARCORD" and "LA STRADA", can sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail.
Silva Screen Records and James Fitzpatrick (producer), please stand up and take a bow for the well deserved rare gems you've given us. This can only be one of the most sought after collections complete in every detail for any "film-score-buff" worth his salt. As you listen to this CD, you can visualize each scene the cue is recalling. And speaking for one and all movie music collectors----this is a keeper!

The cd is a wonderful complilation. It makes me wonder why it is so hard to find a release from lead singer Ty Hunter titled "Darlin, darin, darlin". I have searched the world over and to no avail no luck. Please help. Otherwise, the artists are to bad for their own good. I have recommended this cd to a few "old school lovers".

A chilling and thrilling Prog. Rock album.......2007-02-22
This was my first look into Gentle Giant's world, and it was a thriller! I saw that this was one of their more popular albums, and even though it was the most expensive, I purchased it. I don't regret it at all, and it was worth every penny. There are many intricate movements, and it is all done with complexity worthy of an essential Progressive Rock album. Yes and ELP fans will be happy with this album, even though it is very different from their material. Overall, it is an essential addition to any Progressive Rock collection.
many fans favorite.......2006-07-21
For fans of the band this album represeted a change in the Giant sound. The production is clinical the sound quite spikey which perfectly complements the six tracks. There is less sax and ensemble string arrangements and gary greens guitar comes more to the fore. The songs are vintage GG with great arrangements. A record of great invention still sounds like it was made yesterday.
Most beloved Gentle Giant album.......2005-04-15
This is a remaster with good sound quality. Like all Gentle Giant albums, there have been several different CD releases of In A Glass House, with varying sound quality. You need to be careful when buying a Gentle Giant CD to ensure you get good quality.
The original album was 37 minutes. This has an additional 20 minutes of bonus live material.
There is a 30th Anniversary version of In A Glass House coming out soon. It will be much cheaper than this CD. I understand that it also has the bonus material, but I haven't been able to confirm that.
This is album that Gentle Giant fans speak most fondly about. I don't know why. Maybe it is the nice cover that had a cel image of the band on top a another image of the band for a "3D" effect. Or maybe it is because the LP was never released in the US, coming out just as the band was starting to gain some popularity (between Octopus and Power and Glory). In spite of being available only as a costly import, it was the third biggest selling Gentle Giant LP in the US. This album kind of got lost in the shuffle as Gentle Giant was moving from Columbia records to Capitol. So, when more fans discovered Gentle Giant when Free Hand was released, those earlier collectors could amaze their friends by pulling out a copy of In A Glass House.
The sound is much different than other Gentle Giant albums. In A Glass House actually describes the music. The album starts out with glass breaking. The music on this entire album has that sharp, shattering sound. Derek Shuman had left the group, so there is very little sax and no flute. There is a lot of high ringing vibes and guitar work.
Gentle Giant's live preformances during this period also had a starker, stripped down sound. At some points in concert, they were much more like a convention rock band.
In the next three ablums after this, Gentle Giant would return to the lusher, more mellow sound.
Delicious.......2005-04-08
This CD has so many tasty snipits in it...I can't get enough of each of them. As I seem to recall, this was the last "version" of the band that I had enjoyed so much. They got much noisier down the road. This is more in line with Octopus, Acquiring the Taste and Three Friends.
Oh God, "In a Glass House" on CD, FINALLY!.......2005-04-04
I just ordered my CD so I can't tell you anything about this remastered version. But I can tell you that this is a superb album, and that this band had a level of invention and musicality that absolutely amazed listeners back in an era when invention was not uncommon. I DID hear Gentle Giant live, and were even better than their basically perfect studio records. I have bought every Gentle Giant CD I have found and I had no clue why this one wasn't out there, since it is among the best albums they have made. I'm SO glad to see it reissued, this one is a real treat.

Revolutionary percussion.......2000-07-10
An excellent showcase for Synergy's talents. This scintillating compilation by a talented percussion band will please their many admirers and make admirers of those unfortunate enough to not have heard them before.
The hard edged percussion in this is combined with innovative pieces. Malachite Green is my favourite but every one of the pieces ( except the rather weak "Minimalism..." ) has its strong points.
Buy beg steal or get via Napster ! Heck, I even enjoyed their Peter Sculthorpe piece ( cant normally stand Sculthorpe, but Synergy do it so very well, that I have even forgiven Peter for existing :-)

Ah, memories.......2003-06-05
This CD remains one of my favorites...not only is the music fantastic, but it brings back great memories of rocking out to these guys at Stebs (RIP) in Cedar Falls Iowa, a club they really adopted as their own.
H.O.L.S. - the best band you've never heard!.......2003-01-28
I'm pretty sure that most people out there don't know much about House of Large Sizes unless you are a resident of a mid-sized Midwestern town who's actually been to one of their shows. This is one of the most talented local bands I've ever heard. Among the best of their albums is the 1997 release "Glass Cockpit." This is one of the few of their releases that feels like it wasn't thrown together at the last minute. W.A.R. records did an excellent job of producing this album and it is definitely worth checking out. "Cranko-American," the first tune on the album, will hook you the first time you hear it. Check out HOLS' other albums if you like Glass Cockpit. Also, check out their new self-titled release in late 2001. It is also quite impressive work! 5 stars
Punk at its finest.......2002-11-20
This CD is absolutely incredible. All the songs have their own originality to them. This is the type of album that you pop in your car and EVERYONE who rides with you asks to borrow the CD. I've owned this CD for five years and it has a permanent home in my top 5 list.
Undiscovered Brilliance.......2002-11-18
Most HOLS fans are resigned to the fact that House will never achieve the fandom and greatness that it truly deserves. This is a mixed blessing for our ranks; on one hand we get to see their killer shows at cozy venues and talk to them after the concert, on the other hand, it's maddening knowing about something so great and not being able to share it with the world.
As an album, Glass Cockpit more or less defines the range and intensity of HOLS. From the frantic and loud headbanger 'Fingernail' to the sweet, childlike vocals of 'Homemade Zodiac', this album is moving and just flat-out impressive. It's production value is the best of all of their albums, including the new self-titled release, and is an excellent starter to the trio.
If you're into good guitar, kicking bass and catchy (and seemingly) nonsensical lyrics, this is your band. I may be resigned to the fact that HOLS will forever remain 'undiscovered', but for those happy few that know them, this is the Great Work. Check it out, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed.
HOLS is the best.......1999-11-17
Great CD! The others have said almost everything. If you have never seen them live you owe it to yourself to see them. Not only do they put on a heck of a show that you will remember for years they are great guys, and girl!
