Goddess Blues
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Back in the mid-'80s, Hoboken, New Jersey's Gutbank preceded and predicted such smart, powerful female punks as Hole, Babes In Toyland, and P.J. Harvey, not to mention the riot grrrls. Now, the original trio of Alice Genese, Karyn Kuhl, and Tia Sprocket are back with a new name, Sexpod, a slightly more metallic sound, and a killer debut called Goddess Blues. "Patti Smith meets Soundgarden" is the phrase that's repeated throughout their press kit, and for once, the disc lives up to the hype. Any one of these gals could kick Alanis Morrisette's butt with one hand tied behind her back. Jim Derogatis

Good solid blues from an unlikely source.......2006-02-09
We don't normally assocaite sweden and Northern Europe as a hotbed of blues like Mississippi or Chicago but this is good stuff. Her love of the material shines through, there's a nice mix of covers and originals here, and there;s a fresh approach. A very enjoyable effort.
Louise Plays Blues For Today.......2004-05-01
I love this album for a couple of reasons. 1st is Louise's obvious love of and reverance for true blues music. It comes through on song after song, particularly the covers of such classics as "God Don't Ever Change",and "I Just Wanna Make Love To You". Then there are the tracks on which she infuses her own
brand of modernenity, the opener "Ballad Of Sweet Louise", and "Baby Don't You Tear My Clothes", reminiscent of R.L. Burnside's "Wish I Was In Heaven Sittin' Down".
The other thing I love about this album is that I can see the evolution in her music. You see, I knew Louise when she was an exchange student from Sweden at my brother's high school in Jupiter, FL and lived up the street from me, way back around 1983. At the time Louise gave me a demo of some songs she had recorded with her punk band at the time called "Dysenteri" in Sweden. Even then though, she was blowing her harp in the tradition of the blues masters. I still have that tape.
All in all, if you're a blues fan or just love really great new music, you owe it to yourself to check out this amazing artist.

Solid 2nd CD From Caron!!.......2002-01-13
This IS NOT the Debut CD by Caron Wheeler!! Her 1st (& out of print) CD was 1990's 'UK Blak', but 'Beach Of The War Goddess' is a solid project with a variety of innovative producers. The 1st single from this CD was 'I Adore You' (produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and originally on the 'Mo Money' soundtrack). Caron's vocals are strong, but yet subtle at the same time, and those who loved her Soul II Soul music, will enjoy this effort. This CD was not promoted properly, and that's a shame because Caron is a pioneer of the 'Neo Soul' genre of music (incl.Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, India.Arie, Jill Scott, etc.). All 'Neo Soul' Music lovers should get BOTH of Caron's solo CDs, her Soul II Soul projects, and 'Cookie-The Anthropological Mixtape' by Me'Shell NdeGeOcello (Caron sings on many of the tracks). Highly recommended tracks on 'Beach Of The War Goddess':'I Adore You', 'Soul Street', 'Lite As A Feather', 'Do You Care', 'Father', In Our Love', and MORE!

Good Solid Debut.......2000-04-25
Caron Wheeler is a Very Talented Artist.in Fact Soul 11 Soul wasn't the same after She Left. This Album should have gotten more Props. Her voice sounds So Strong all the way through on here. She deserves More Respect. Her Material is very strong.
An incredible singer matched with incredible production.......2000-03-09
Former Soul II Soul songstress Caron Wheeler gives us a vastly-underrated, incredible second solo album that quietly set the standard for intellectually-minded, truly soul-searching R&B that artists like Erykah Badu, Amel Larrieux and others are mining now. Wheeler has one of the most increible voices and singing styles of any singer out today, and it's a shame more people didn't buy this record when it was out and she could have used the sales. There's a smashing ballad ("Do You Care?"), Jam&Lewis production ("I Adore You", which was the only really good song on the deplorable MO' MONEY soundtrack) and some other great, surprising gifts of vocal agility, grand production and simply good songwriting. The best R&B album you never heard.

Product Description
Nijole (nee-YOH-luh) writes sensual melodic songs with mystical landscapes, exotic twists, and lyrics to uplift and inspire. Accompanying her delicate lead vocals, she performs layers of Lithuanian background vocals, hinting of the choirs she grew up with in Chicago. The production of Fritz Heede features gifted players on ethnic percussion, stringed instruments, flutes, violins, as well as classical cello, electric guitars and synthesizers. Overall, Parallel Universe is a powerful journey for the heart and soul.

I just love this CD....I'm in a sad place now and it smoothed me and made me feel better.I'm telling all my friends about this CD.
Touched Me On All Levels.......2005-12-11
What I love about this CD is that it is great on all levels. The music and production are fabulous, with exotic instrumentation. The vocals are beautiful, they have great tone and depth and the words are meaningful. The notes and melodies are interesting to listen to. Overall the whole CD is passionate and uplifting.
Fabulously Woven Styles.......2005-12-04
What a beautiful, dreamy, exotic, album!
I think I've been waiting a long time to hear this music!
I knew I was going to like it from the first amazing guitar riff
- a cross between Chris Isaac and something Middle Eastern like what Jimmy Page would come up with, set against a backdrop of poignant silence. And then you hear Nijole's voice almost whispering -- You rarely hear a voice so soothing and sensuous, but so expressive - her voice is audibly painting a picture with its subtle shades of emotional expression -- and then the music suddenly sweeps up and out into a lavish chorus of siren
song! And then she transports you to some ancient ancestral place when she suddenly goes Lithuanian on ya...! Good stuff... sent shivers down my back. And the girl's got a range, too - check out the unbelievably high notes in "Rise" - I couldn't tell if it was the flute until I heard it playing alongside her vocal,
except much LOWER!
So I thought, of course the first song is good, the second song is good... but I'm sure all the weak songs are going to be towards the end. Not so!! Every song is wonderful.
Each song is different from each the other - one more pop, one more ethnic, one almost jazzy and the last one is almost classical, though this one is the most unique to me - truly Nijole found a completely unique voice in "Evening Prayer".
But somehow no matter how different each song is from the other, the whole album is held together with Nijole's own unique style. She is continuing the Peter Gabriel tradition -- writing pop songs with a different vocabulary, borrowing from exotic influences but still unmistakably pop (or "art pop", as some like to call it). Great melodies that stick with you -- I'm constantly singing a different song in my head. And the words are speaking to our emotional experiences, as well as offering a positive philosophy. She has a unique insight into our psychology...perhaps into her own soul?
And certainly Nijole has found an equally worthy partner in Fritz Heede who did the production -- very lush, very exotic, walking the fine line between ethereal, airy and otherworldly on the one hand, until he brings you crashing down to earth with some wild guitar riff or pulsing ethnic percussion, carving out a style all his own. Each song is like a dramatic piece with a perfectly meshed musical score underlying the meaning - each like a little movie... The musicians on the album are all
very top-notch - always fresh, always creative, nothing clichéd in any of the musical prases or arrangements, which is certainly welcome in today's musical
environment! All in all, I can't help loving this album,
I really look forward to my drive now, knowing that it's going to be really special
Nijole sparkles!.......2005-11-19
Sparkis' cd is a rare combination of original material using contemporary musical references as well as folk sources. Sparkis combines her diverse influences and sources seamlessly. Highly recommended!
A Parallel Frequency of Sound.......2005-11-17
... At your reach...
Nijole's voice and Lyrics defy category, they send us on a musical ride yet unparalleled! It's a virtual cave where the ethnic meets the electric, where time-space line fades... where all is yet forming before it materializes in the Universe on a Time and Space line. Find out for yourself.

The debut release by Boston band The Silver Lining.
Somewhere along the line, Rock WorldTM went terribly wrong. Vocals became lazy and stylized, rhythm stopped swinging, and writing a vibrant, catchy, and emotionally resonant tune ranked a distant second to winking hipster cache and the guise of experimentalism. As an aesthetic of elitism, snark, and irony replaced high ideals and genuine enthusiasm, rock lost some of its driving populist impact as a cultural force. The Silver Lining are an antidote to this malaise. Their unique lyrics, wedded to idiosyncratic melodies, which are in turn supported by gorgeous male/female harmonies, danceable rhythms, and shifting instrumental textures, create an alternate universe where the bright days of the Summer of Love, Swinging London and the Brill Building come together with the dark nights of the Sunset Strip and Altamont in a fresh sound that should move music fans of any decade, especially those who recognize and revel in the complex core lying beneath the smooth exterior of so many classic pop hits.
Produced by Tony Goddess, Recorded at Revere, MA's Fleetwood Recording Studios, birthplace of the Shaggs' Philosophy of the World, and Goddess' Bang a Sound and mixed at Paul Q. Kolderie's legendary Camp St. Studios.
The Silver Lining is:
Matt Rhodes Vocals/Guitar, Anna Price Vocals, Greg Radawich Bass, Doug Fuller Drums, Ted Collins - Keys

Reviews for "Well Dressed Blues".......2006-06-08
It's rare to hear a debut album that sounds as fully-realized as the the Silver Lining 's note-perfect, Tony Goddess-produced Well Dressed Blues, which already already has folks describing them as the US's answer to Magic Numbers. Fronted by co-singing husband-and-wife team of Anna Price and Matt Rhodes, the group nails joyous '60s pop like no one we've heard in years.
--The Boston Phoenix
Well Dressed Blues, the Silver Lining's self-released full-length debut is, quite simply, unlike anything you're likely to hear from a Boston band this year, or have likely heard from a contemporary band in a very long time. Expertly produced and engineered by Papas Fritas/Rudds member Tony Goddess, Blues is front-loaded with brightly gilded boy-girl harmonies that, yes, hark back to the Airplane, the Mamas and the Papas, and the Association. The group's transistor-radio pop also carries a dash of the Turtles and the Something Else-era Kinks. The month-long Abbey residency begins on June 6 to coincide with the disc's release. What's remarkable about Well Dressed Blues is how fresh it all sounds as an antidote to the troubled, politically divisive times we're living in. The album works as both a balm and an escape.
-- Jonathan Perry, Stuff@Night
The Silver Lining recall those Saturday afternoons driving around in your parents' slant-6 Dodge Dart with that glowing A.M.-radio pop kicking out of the single front speaker. Matt Rhodes' tasteful guitar panache and Brill-bent songwriting prowess, along with Anna Price's harmonies and full-on wails, will propel their forthcoming debut "Well Dressed Blues," produced by Tony Goddess (Rudds, ex-Papas Fritas), to local -- if not national -- breakout status.
--The Boston Metro
"The cuddly lady and long haired lad may bring pop stars The Magic Numbers to mind, but this American act sound far more like the Cali-influences the Numbers purport to have. This demo was recorded in a big studio and the production is pretty nice although indebted to everyone from The Association through to Alice Cooper theres enough of the modern age about this cool harmony rock band to break through. For cats like us though, the songcraft and arrangements of the late 60s are very much in evidence. A little bit rockier than sunshine pop per se with some nice touches. I dig it. "
--Shindig!
"The Silver Lining is not really a subtle band, and Id like to see the technology that could drown out these vocals. Soaring, powerful, turbocharged vocals. The combination of a sweet tenor and a power alto makes for gorgeous harmonies; Im reminded a little of Lennon and McCartney at a couple of points. And when Anna really cuts loose and wails, its glorious. With excellent drumming and bass lines and tastefully flashy guitar solos, there is just absolutely nothing wrong with this set. Im especially impressed with a song called Well Dressed Blues, the lyrics to which seem delightfully dirty when I can make them out. And the last song has a slow, smokey Patti Smith intensity to it."

Painfully Overlooked........2004-04-18
I just ordered this album for about 2 bux and after hearing it i wouldve gladly payed a higher price for this lost treasure. It really is a great album, and shouldve got more recognition than it did. There are few albums that i can actually listen to all the way through and this is one of them! Lot of emotion put into the music here....Very very soulful metal. The guitar work here is awesome to say the least....alot of scorching acid-solo's that make you wonder why Karyn Kuhl isnt at least considered one of the greatest female guitarists today. Just listen to the epic album-closer "waterfall" I mean wow....if Hendrix were still with us today he'd be proud.Karyn is also an amazing vocalist, shes very hypnotic and powerful. The whole band is great! This is a must....pick it up! You wont be sorry!
The greatest band you've never heard of!!!..........2002-03-19
Sexpod never really did achieve any recognition for being one of the best female rock bands of all time, mainly I think because of the short lifespan of the band, and the reclusive personality of the lead singer, songwritter, and guitarist Karyn Kuhl.
From the very first power chords of "Goddess Blues" (the first track), it's apparant that something incredibly amazing is happening here. I've listened to many female guitarists in my time, and none can compare to Karyn's talent or insight. Her playng brings forth images of almost every great rock guitarist I've ever heard...(Hendrix, Clapton, Paige, ect.)... and adds her own fresh smoothe touch to it that makes it unbelievably addictive to listen to. Her talent is not limited to playng power chords either, she can and does play the most phenomenal solos. She can do it all with a guitar, and do it all really well.
Her voice is nothing short of hypnotic. I think what mainly draws me to it is that there's the slightlest hint of unintended desperation in every line. She never wails or screams...rather reflects a quite confidence, intertwined with a hint of despair.
Karyn still plays around New York City with her new "Band of Whores". I got the chance to meet her a couple of times over the past year, and she's really a great person as well as an incredible talent.
If you love ROCK as much as I do(especially girl bands). You owe it to yourself to buy this!!!!!
PLAY IT LOUD!!!!!!!!!
Best female rock group I've ever heard.......1999-04-25
I hear the title track on the radio a couple of years ago and decided to buy the album. I was not disappointed! These girls know how to rock. Nothing sappy or whiny; just straight up metal with awesome bass. Really not a bad song on the whole album.
They're godesses.......1999-02-28
Sexpod was a band that i'd never really heard of. But I saw it used at a store and it was a $1.50 I thought the cover was entertaining, so I decided to get it. That was the best $1.50 i've ever spent. This album is great. I don't really know what to call them, what catagory. Maybe riot grrl I don't know, whatever it was, I love it!

One More Great Percy Faith Twofer by Collectables.......2006-02-12
Two big qualities distinguish the late Percy Faith.
First of all he was an original arranger with all those strings combined as if in a brass section in a unique sound. Second of all, he was a staff arranger for Columbia Records what gave him the opportunity to work on memorable albums by Johnny Mathis and other singers.
This twofer shows two different approaches: the first 12 takes came from his splendid album 'The Love Godessess' full of Mr. Faith's own compositions for films and TV series like 'The Virginian'. They're such inspired songs like the title song and 'Celia's Waltz'.
The second 12 takes came from another album with a miscellaneous movie soundtrack repertoire. They're such great songs by great composers but Mr. Faith's arrangements do not add any special flavor to the originals.
A special note on Collectables Records regarding its extraordinary series of twofers which have finally issued virtually all Percy Faith material.
"Miklos Rozsa epic film scores ~ Percy Faith".......2003-07-04
Every week I would go to the downtown library and check out the latest albums (LP's) ~ my eyes would always look for the Percy Faith releases. One of my favorites was "The Love Goddesses", featuring compositions by Maestro Faith, something about his string arrangements drew me to this album. At that time I had a reel-to-reel recorder/player and cassette recorder, would tape every album by Mr. Faith I could get my hands on. Later I would go to Webster Records the local record store in Old Webster, Mo. and purchase his latest releases.
Entire album is a stand out, but here are some of the highlights ~ "MARILYN", beautiful haunting melody as strings and counter strings open, blending a harp that keeps reoccurring in your head ~ "THE VAMP", solo clarinet with plunking violins, enters the solo violin and full strings answer, simply beautiful ~ "OUR LOVE", is typical Percy Faith with an arrangement to die for ~ "CELIA'S WALTZ", a solo saxophone comes forward with counterpoints from Faith's famous string section, the melody gets under your skin and becomes intoxicating ~ "OBA! (BOSSA NOVA)", what is a Percy Faith album without Latin flavor, and this is what he does best.
Second half of the album is "Hollywood's Great Themes", opening with "EL CID(LOVE THEME), "THEME FROM KING OF KINGS" and "BEN HUR(LOVE THEME)" the legendary Miklos Rozsa could do no wrong when it came to epic films, Faith's brilliant arrangement puts the listener right up there on the big screen ~ "MARIA", the wonderful song from "West Side Story" that will go one forever ~ "THEME FROM LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA", a heart-wrenching film with a light floating melody that lingers on, just take a listen to Faith's strings in top form ~ what a classic arrangement from the git-go!
Total Time: 72:52 on 24 Tracks ~ Collectables 7478 ~ (3/19/2002)
Uneven outing for Faith.......2002-05-20
This twofer, with over 70 minutes of music, provides a showcase for Faith-penned tunes and some lesser known hits from Hollywood. The Love Goddess finds the Faith arrangements full of his trademark strings, but several hits are distinctive in that Faith employs the brassiness of a big band sound, especially on Cheesecake. Keystone Kapers, with whistles and bells, is forgetful, but other selections are an easy listen. Hollywood's Great Themes contains selections that certainly would not make anyone's list of great themes from Hollywood. Would you pick the love theme from Ben Hur, or the theme from Light in the Piazza, or how about Over and Over Again from Jumbo? The only real Hollywood classic here is Moon River, though Faith does add a smattering of Richard Rodgers, with Hart and Hammerstein.

The Love Goddesses from 1964 is a fairely good album by Faith and oneI'm glad to add to my collection. This album is more jazzeier than a lot of Faith's other albums. Some songs are very lush such as Marilyn Our Love,The Monoco Theme,The Love Goddess,Chico Bolero, and Celia's Waltz. The other songs on this album are upbeat with incarnations of jazz especially Cheesecake.Oba is a bossa nova and is pretty good. All songs from the Love Goddesses album was written by Percy Faith himself.Hollywood's Great Themes from 1962 is movie themes and some are very good. This album features light strings with the exception of the last two Theme From The Four Horseman Of The Apocalypse and Theme From Light In The Plazza These two have heavy strings. My favorite is Splendor In The Grass. This album was only available on cassette several years ago beforecollectibles, taragon, good music and ranwood came along with Faith reissiues.Back then only 4 albums were out by Faith and 2 cassettes this one and Deep Purple which were hard to find than.Liner Notes are included for the Love Goddesses but are not included for Hollywoods Great Themes.Another great 2 on 1 album with 2 great albums by Faith.
