Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Fourth Dimensional Rocketships Going Up is a first-rate solo debut by veteran rapper Gift of Gab, who is a member of the group Blackalicious and the San Francisco-based association Quannum Projects (DJ Shadow, Latyrx, Lifesavas). There's a strong Seattle flavor here--the album was recorded in Seattle, and produced by two of that city's most established beat architects, Vitamin D and Jake One. This meeting of underground talents results in something truly wonderful: the music is rich with detail, surprises, and suggestions, and the raps are deeply introspective. The ride of your life....Plain and simply put. From this intro track until the last second of the album is pure music. I feel sorry for the people who can't appreciate good music these days. Gift is one of most talented artists in his own way. Very conscious yet laid back. If you down this album you ain't a true head. Real music for real people.

I'm not going to say that Gift of Gab is the best mc, there are many others out there that can lay down better rymes and faster. BUT, gift of gab's lyrics are positive and smooth.

What really makes this cd is the way it flows. I have yet to hear a cd that flows better than this, the beats are perfectly matched to the lyrics and they never really get old (Except for Rat Race which is my least favorite song).

Personally I like this cd than Blackalicious cds, you decide.

GoG is an MC that is not only high skilled and diverse in his spittin (speed, flow) he is intelligent and thoughtful rapping about spirituality, my assumption is that he's studied at least a bit of Zen

This is truly a great and meaningful album. I never heard of Gift of Gab until I got this album and it was well worth it. I think he is one of the illest rappers out there today. His lyrics are on point and fiery. The album is like taking an uplifting journey from the very first song all the way to the end. This is influential rap at its best. What I really enjoy about the cd is the noticeable Seattle flavor and it never gets old. It seems like the more I listen to it the more I like it and thats rare nowadays in any album. I may take some time away from listening to it but I always come back to it and it seems to rejuvenate and uplift me. It is a special cd and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

This album speaks to me.

From the very first track (The Ride of Your Life) to the very last (Just Because) this proves to be a very focused, poignant glimpse into the life of Tim Parker, AKA The Gift of Gab. From the deeply introspective ("In a Minute Doe", "Moonshine"), to the unabashed feel-good jams ("Flashback", "Way of the Light"), to the hardcore battle raps ("Real MCs", "The Writz") and everything inbetween, every song is complete and every song is, plainly, off the freekin' hook. Featuring production that makes my spine tingle combined with lyrics that make you think, smile, laugh, and in some cases re-examine your life (sometimes all at once), 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up is a journey that covers uncharted musical territory.

This is just one of those albums - it gives you an indescribable feeling, starting with the first time you listen to it and never ending. It is in every way a perfect album - that is, every way except one.

It's just too short. I still love the album and I'd give it 6 stars if I could, but it's just too short. Maybe one or two more songs and I would throw away all my other CDs and listen to this one for the rest of my life.

This is the perfect album for somebody who is not afraid of music that demands you sit down and think about it.

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

I received this CD as a gift from an audiophile friend. It hasn't left my CD player since (which, quite honestly, is totally out of character for me). Great writing, wonderful harmonies, terrific hooks -- a masterful blend of simple and complex that just gets better with every listen.

McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."

If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.

Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!

The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.

This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??

Like the quiet guy in the back of the bar who never seems to say or do much but always has a flock of pals about, Bill Staines does not make a quick and flashy impression. The folkie singer-songwriter croons about roads and landscapes, children and waitresses, in a sleepy tenor as he strums familiar chords. You really have to pay attention to appreciate the fresh clarity he brings to these well-worn topics and the low-key warmth he brings to those vocals. If you give Staines's album, Going to the West, the study it deserves, however, you may well end up agreeing with Nanci Griffith's effusive liner notes: "When I grow up," she writes, "I want to be Bill Staines." --Geoffrey Himes

"Child of Mine" is the best song on this CD. I played the song for my son's baptism in 1995. The song says it all.
A lot of other good tunes on this one as well. The only minor criticism is that there is too much orchestration on some of the songs. Staines is strongest when it is just he and his guitar. If you have a chance to see Bill, live, don't pass up the chance. Also check out his new book about life on the road!

Except for 'River' (Band 6), these are all new songs for Bill Statines. For those of us who have heard Bill for many years, the new songs show that he still is one of the finest folk masters in the game. The second cut (Child of Mine) is especially beautiful... A must!! He shows that he still has a wonderful voice and ability to tell beautiful stories. A Staines classic, with an older voice.
