Ithaca Times
"The band's sound has evolved from its earlier folkish stylings and headed into more creative up-tempo rhythms. There is an aura beginning to build around the Sim Redmond Band and you can pick up on their rootsy rhythmic vibes."

Product Description

Legendary Dogg Pound member Kurupt brings his Philadelphia to California roots full circle, teaming up with the fast rising 'Philly to Cali' trio Tangled Thoughts to deliver the ground breaking new album entitled appropriately "Philly 2 Cali." Merging the best of the East with the best of the West, the nineteen track full-length features a who's who of CA and PA rappers, including appearances from Freeway, Sen Dog of Cypress Hill and Mellow Man Ace (now collectively known as The Reyes Bros.), Gillie Da Kid, Roscoe, Ab Liva, Gail Gotti and more. Consisting of Tek, Casanova and De, Tangled Thoughts was birthed in early 2000 in the 'City of Brotherly Love.' In Spring 2005, they hooked up with Kurupt. After a few months of working together, Kurupt convinced the trio to take their act to the West Coast. In Fall 2005, that s just what they did. The three packed up their cars and hit the road. With a fresh outlook and new surroundings, Tangled Thoughts got off to quick start in 2006. Casanova landed an on-air job at 103.3 The Vibe in Ventura County, De's has been working with Infamous/G-Unit artist Gail Gotti writing rhymes and Tek has been producing tracks for The Dogg Pound, Jayo Felony and mulit platinum producer Swizz Beats, among others. Jump ahead to 2007, and the boys have focused all their energy and put together one hell of an album. Refreshing and youthful song topics, clever lyrics and tracks full of deep, layered music is what Tangled Thoughts is all about, and their goal is to bring the true essence of Hip Hop back. "Philly to Cali" is the first step in that process.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut from a sensational group!.......2007-06-01

Tangled Thoughts is the next big thing. This, their first nationally released album, showcases their east-to-west coast vibe (They are from Philly and moved to Cali) and reveals great tracks that have great beats and stories to tell. Kurupt has presented Tangled Thoughts, which is Tek (who serves as MC and producer) Cas, and De and joins them, along with guests like Gail Gotti, Freeway, Sen Dog, Ab Liva, and more, to create really first rate hip hop.
I really love "Product Of My Environment"...but every track grooves and hits the mark. Buy this one-you will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Mellow grooves.......2006-12-16

Sim Redmond developed one of the coolest vibes of any live band around. He and the amazing Uniit Carrayo (Sp?) lyrically soar about the typical jam band or hippie band fare. They are more internationally-minded than to be lumped into the jam band mess. I definitely dig them, and older CDs like this are probably the best. The newest album is so forgettable that I already forget it's name, it's OK but doesn't seem as raw and pure as earlier recordings. As the band progressed they became toooooo mellow and tooooo smooth. I am getting worried that they are heading in an "adult contemporary" direction that is the curse of any cool band. Plus, even though they found a great replacement for Uniit on the new album, I think she added something extra to the band. I would still go see them live any chance I get!

1 out of 5 stars Please let it end.......2003-04-04

I hate this music. I'm very tolerant of a lot of things, but I just can't stand it, it makes me want to scratch my ears until they bleed. My roommate loves this *STUFF* and I'm forced to hear it until he moves out. I'd say all these CDs should be made into coasters, but I wouldn't even want to set my drink on one.

5 out of 5 stars tip of an iceberg, but warm.......2001-12-20

The Sim Redmond Band has two other albums. The one before this one is called "The Things We Will Keep" and the latest one is "Life Is Water". "Good Thoughts" represents a transition between the more driving, melodic sound of the first album and the mellower, groove-based sound of the third. As such, it may be the best of both worlds (although each is equally wonderful in its own way).

Generally speaking Sim is the rhythm guitarist and Jordan Aceto is the lead, but when they begin to stretch out and jam (particularly in concert) they start playing twin lead with the melodies intertwining in sometimes arresting ways. I suppose this is the cause of the reference to the Allman Brothers in another review here, but whereas the Allmans were blues-based, SRB draws heavily from the Zairean tradition of the eastern part of Africa,. This includes tuning their guitars in intervals that may be unfamiliar to a lot of people and may be the cause for the comment in another review that the music "all sounds the same after a while".

The overall effect of this music is to make you feel good, but it isn't sentimental. In fact a few of the songs are about not feeling very good at all (especially Uniit Carruyo's "Holes In the Ground"), but the warmth of the music and the sincerity of the vocals leaves you with the feeling that everything is going to be OK, even if everyone is not happy-happy all the time. In sum, this is music with integrity and intelligence but not the least bit angry, which seems to be sorely lacking in a lot of pop music today.

Uniit Carruyo is an important part of the band's sound and seems to be contributing progressively more musically with each album. She has her very own way of phrasing, bending and stretching syllables, adding and subtracting roughness from her voice. She has a solo album that is well worth searching for.

The last word should belong to the rhythm section in this band: Asa Redmond on drums and Dan Merwin on bass. (I guess the presence of Asa may account for the Allman comparisons too.) Asa is nothing short of amazing and has obviously studied African percussion with a certain amount of zeal and reverence. Merwin is just plain locked into the beat.

Buy this album and definitely go see them play live. You will be in a good mood for days.

5 out of 5 stars I love this disc!.......2001-03-01

I got turned on to SRB at last year's GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg. I've been listening to Good Thoughts ever since, and it never gets old. Sort of a cross between Paul Simon's Graceland and Jimmy Cliff, this is the freshest set of feel good grooves I've heard in a long time. The disc is filled with soulful, infectious, world beat-flavored folk rock, featuring rich warm vocals from Sim Redmond and Uniit Carrayo, great writing, and rock-solid instrumentals all the way around. Sim and lead guitarist Jordan Aceto complement each other beautifully, trading tasty licks throughout, and the rhythm section is incredibly tight. My personal favorites are Arms Around the Sun, Trouble's Comin', and Holes in the Ground, but there's not a weak track to be found. The only criticism I have is that the tunes tend to sound a little similar after awhile, but the sound is so pleasant and catchy that it's never tiresome. Listening to this CD gives me a glow like a perfect day at the beach. Having seen them put on a killer show in Rochester just last week, I can attest that this band is a real creative force. Their sparkling jams and memorable tunes will hook you in and keep you dancing. Rock on, SRB!

5 out of 5 stars Stars on the rise.......2000-10-18

This is definitely one of the best albums I heard in a long time. Once it found it's place in my CD player I just couldn't bring myself to taking it out. You can listen to it over and over and over.... These guys could be big, really big. My favorite new band!!

5 out of 5 stars The Streets are Unsafe Again!.......2005-01-22

In a world where everything is polished with syrup and schlock- it's ironic that this caustic, drunken, rural punk is a breath of fresh air. The songs are so damned catchy and direct- The Country Teasers stand to influence a whole generation of musicians like the Pixies of yore. I cannot get enough of the sauntering disregard.
    Go Teasers Go!

    5 out of 5 stars A messy little wonder.......2002-11-05

What do you get when you get a bunch of drunk Scottish guys who rip off riffs from the Fall and Joy Division and throw them into their anti-P.C. country music? You get this masterpiece of drunken hilarity. But besides being funny and offensive, they are actually great songwriters. Saying they are witty is way too much of an understatement. The riffs may not be totally original, but the delivery definitely is. After you've heard it more times and don't focus on the lyrical content and take the songs in as a whole, you will see them for the sloppy wonders that they are.
There really is no other band like the Country Teasers, and you gotta love a band that wants to smash down the P.C. walls and make it okay to make fun of everything again. Everything they have recorded is great, but this is their master work. I can't say enough good things about it.
If you are P.C., like slick productions, and bands who don't miss a note, the Country Teasers are not for you.

4 out of 5 stars tease your country.......2000-02-22

Cynics? Reprobates? All that and ironic too. There is nothing like throwing back a few (hundred) beer and seeing the Teasers live, with the exception of playing poker long into the night with Satan is Real Again cranked. This album has some of the wittiest lyrics ever with a good dose of social commentary thrown in the mix. The music is raw and strangely reminiscent of the Clash running headlong into Hank Williams Sr. while Tom Waits reports the brutal events. Don't even bother if you like Clint Black or Mariah Carey, but if a Whiskey voiced hillbilly punk band from Scotland is what you have in mind, then you should have bought this album years ago.

          Album Description

"No one listens to an Ad Frank CD to hear about him getting lucky," one of his fans was overheard saying. From his past releases people expect Ad Frank to wallow in self-pity and self-loathing, albeit with a sense of black humor. So what's a fan to expect when hearing the lighthearted "Dumb Trilemma" or the upbeat "Girls as Sharp as You are Something Rare" from his third solo album, In Girl Trouble? Don't worry, there's still plenty of melancholy to go around on this follow-up to the acclaimed Mr. Fancypants (the CD is entitled In Girl Trouble after all), but this time Ad's managed to have a little fun too. "When I set out to write the songs for In Girl Trouble, I decided that I wasn't going to make another album that was brooding or self-pitying," says Ad, "I thought I succeeded, but after I first played the songs with my new band, The Fast Easy Women, I stopped for a minute and said, 'These songs aren't dark enough,' the band just burst into laughter." The band can be forgiven for laughing at the fact that songs like "Jet Aircraft" with its lamenting chorus of "I lost my love and no one's going to love me again" or the dour, "I hope for more than I can give back/Something fine in me has died," from the otherwise upbeat "You Have Murdered Something Fine in Me" weren't dark enough. And then there's the opening line from "Goodbye Cruel Girl": "One subway ride and a clearing out of my bank account/I leave all of this and forget what all of the fuss was about." Fans needn't worry that Ad's completely changed his attitude, it's just that now he's a little more well-adjusted.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Number One in a Better World.......2005-11-30

In a perfect world, a world where musical taste ruled and merit, not moolah, drove the pop charts, Ad Frank would be selling out stadiums. He makes fun addictive, pop that is smart but not self-indulgent, complex but not complicated, and generally better than all those sad sacks and neutered punks on your MTV. It's tight four-piece rock with some synths here and there, and gleefully depressing lyrics (just look at the song titles) dished out in Frank's distinctive, articulately barbed voice. This album is his most immediately accessible - both the recent 'world's best ex-boyfriend' and the earlier 'mr. fancypants' are little more jagged and, in the case of the former, a bit downtempo. But don't worry, you'll buy them once you've listened through this album and find yourself needing to know more about this embarassingly clever songwriter.

5 out of 5 stars Shimmering narcissistic pop.......2004-04-07

It's gorgeous, it's silly, it's sweet, and it's got enough crunch to kick a little ass. Sparks, Bryan Ferry, Ad Frank. I just wish I'd seen his live show featuring Jacque Brel tunes.
