weak voices.......2006-01-21
I don,t need to write a book to tell you about this disc.I will leave that to the ones that write as if they are getting paid by the word.
Dont waste your money on this cd. There are a lot of singers on this cd. that dont have the voices and the range and richness to be singing this music. buy one with the best of the singers who sang in the stage productions.
LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST OF IN A SINGLE DISC.......2005-01-07
There are numerous compilations out on the market full of Lloyd Webber's music. As most people know, Lloyd Webber is the most successful musical composer of all time and many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. This is the compilation Lloyd Webber personally supervised and it is the best thing to have if you can't afford his five-CD compilation called "Now and forever", which was selected and supervised by him as well. You should bear in mind, however, that there are two compilations called Gold out there: This one is for the British and the European market. There is another one, issued later and digitally remastered, aimed at the American buyers and although some songs are repeated on both of them, they contain different songs or the same songs sung by different artists. Therefore you should check your favourites and buy accordingly, or, if you can, buy them both.
So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:
1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever.
2. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is beautifully performed by Julie Covington, who was Evita at the 1976 concept album. She sounds like Madonna, only much better and the London philharmonics are the best orchestra ever used in this song. David Essex sings "Oh what a circus" with a strong voice, in my view, much better than Mandy Patinkin.
3. From "Tell me on a Sunday" we have "Take that look of your face" sung by Marti Webb. This studio version blends perfectly Marti's voice and the strong back vocals.
4."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. The one here is from the London cast recording, sung by Elaine Paige. I love Elaine's version very much, but this one is not the definite one. Her best rendition of this song, with the much matured voice, can be heard in "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004.
5. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem". Sarah Brightman is joined by a young boy soprano Paul Miles-Kingston in this solemn deliverance. Very pretty.
6. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs in their single versions. In the song of the same title, we have Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley sounding very appropriate, although my favourite will always be the one with Sarah and Michael Crawford, which can be found on the American version of this compilation. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".
7. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.
8. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Jason Donovan with a youthful warmness. Wonderful pop piece.
9. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this next song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices are a perfect fit. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.
10. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. "The perfect year" is here in its single version, sung splendidly by Dina Carroll, and it sounds much better with this orchestration than in the show on stage.
11. As we approach the end, we have an Academy Award winner, that is, "You must love me" with Madonna, from the 1996 movie version of "Evita". This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.
12. The last two songs are from "Whistle down the wind". The first song has the same title and it's a pop single performed by Tina Arena. She has a really strong voice and the drums and guitars here are a well made combination. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals.
All in all, this CD is a must have for all the Webber fans. It works well as the background music or on the headphones. The booklet contains some pictures and an introductory text. The sound quality is excellent. Every song here really is a pure gold.
Webber's best.......2002-07-05
This CD is subtitled "The Definitive Hit Singles Collection." And that it is. Eighteen tracks include the best known Webber hits. Julie Covington does "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." If you haven't heard the other side of the Evita story, you need to hear David Essex's "Oh What a Circus," an answer to "Don't Cry . . ." Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley do "The Phantom of the Opera," and Michael Crawford does "The Music of the Night." Barbra Streisand does "As if We Never Said Goodbye," Michael Ball does "Love Changes Everything," Marti Webb does "Take That Look Off Your Face," and Madonna does "You Must Love Me." The rest of the album is not filler; is top notch Webber, truly a collection of hit singles.

Album Description
Goodbye Flatland - Track by Track
Ride - This is the kind of song that demands to be put at the front of the line. Hook heavy supercharged mid tempo crunchy rocker with an intriguing cohesion of sonic elements. All the science, art and soul that goes into bringing a rock song to life finds some representation in this mix. It raises the curtain and serves notice that 54 40 is in the house
Animal in Pain - This nugget rockets into outer aural space like a bat out of hell on a particularly hot day. Osborne pushes his upper register to the max and is rewarded for living on the edge. The song kind of demanded it," says Osborne I tried to sing it lower but it just wasn't as alive as the music track was...so I had to push it." It's loud, rowdy and playful. Any song that can work "Bedrock" into the mix more than worthy...hell - proof positive that 54 40 can rock it with the best of them. Note the sampled drum loop that kicks off Animal in Pain and sets the tone for the track. "It's from and old single from 1965, that Allen, our manager had kicking around the studio. The band was called The Grasshoppers and the song was called Mod Socks," says Osborne. " Allen alerted me to it suggesting it would worth considering if we were ever looking for a beat to play around with. Once I heard it - yeah...this is cool."
Take Me Out - What's cool about this track is that it evokes the sweet scent of vintage Euro-pop but without any of the goofy stuff. It rolls as it rocks. Osborne's lead vocal cut like a knife, Johnson' s beat is relentless and everything else just seem to hit all the right notes in this instant classic. A majestic sampled loop of an 19th century spiritual hymn sets the mood and the band takes care of the rest.
Hope The Hell I Haven't Died - The band gets revs up its engine for this four on the floor rocker - churning the sacred power chord into their own groovy brew. Osbornes' ability to infuse irony in his timbre allows him to paint an animated stroke across what is a rather dark lyric. Some nifty production with cascading counter melodies makes it even better.
Not Enough To Make You Happy - The band paints happiness deep black or at least deep blue. A crawling and very eerie guitar line only adds to menace of the driving beat. More sonic strokes of secondary harmony push the groove into a deep dark pocket. Watch your step.
Who Is Sylvia - The acoustic guitar makes it's first headline appearance to help Osborne tell the tale of Sylvia - whoever she is? The implied sense that something bad just happened or is about to happen gives this cut some mojo. A solid album track.
Broken Girl - A sadly beautiful melody that builds into a massive chorus and powerful performance. It's a serious song that demands your attention and heart.
Goodbye Flatland - It begins in a stark barren almost black and white place. A kind of neo folk and thoughtful passage of time vibe that ultimately kicks into wild funhouse ride of pure rock power. It's a surprise and effective.
Secret - The band manages to jangle without needing to jingle on this track which is a nifty trick - very meaty beaty big and bouncy. A tasty keyboard performance gives the mix just enough of twist to keep spinning in the right direction.
Giants - There's a guitar hook on this track that could land Moby Dick. Breezy acoustic treatment lets this track breath easy and achieve a very comfortable cruising altitude - it's a good ride.
Seventeen On - The Chorus treatment showcase the producer vision Osborne brought to the project. He's painting with sound. It's a compelling technique - a very subtle tractor beam that draws you in.
I Wish I Knew This is definitive and classic 54-40 tune. Relentless power and rhythm from drummer Matt Johnson and bassist Brad Merritt, the crafty edge of Phil Comparelli's guitar work and the signature phrasing, timbre and lyrical muse of lead singer Neil Osborne The bands goes out rocking, in balance and
Album Description
Vancouver's 54-40 takes their name from James K. Polk's presidential campaign slogan ''Fifty-Four Forty or Fight,'' which sought to expand the U.S. border northward. 54-40 formed in 1981, and by the time the band's self-titled album in 1986 arrived, their folk/roots approach had earned them favorable comparisons to R.E.M. Subsequent albums found the band moving into harder-edged territory. This is their 2003 album on Smilin' Buddha.
Customer Reviews:
Goodbye Flatland.......2004-03-23
Another amazing release by a talented band. These guys never cease to amaze me with their lyrics, melodies, and sounds. Ok, so they are one of my favorites, but if you have other 54-40 CD's, then you'll know what I mean. I wonder why these guys aren't giants in the industry, but then again, I like them the way they are. This CD features such gems as Giants, Ride, and Seventeen On. Oh ya, Animal In Pain, is a riot! With so much intellegint rock packed into one CD, I feel I've stolen something. Keep up the good work guys!
Canada's version of REM.......2003-09-12
54-40 don't really sound like REM. That is not the point. The point is that for years 54-40 has put out consistantly good music that ranges in style from straight ahead rockers to alt country influenced. Kind of like REM, good music, different styles, etc. But somehow success in the US has eluded 54-40.
All that being said Flatland is a very worthy CD. Some first rate stuff and the only reason it dosen't get 5 is that nothing can compare to their first CD the self titled 54-40. Give the boys from North of the border a listen, you will like what you hear.
54 40 "Goodbye Flatland - Hello More Good Stuff".......2003-08-25
54 40 keeps churning out listener friendly music. Neil Osborne's infectious hooks continue on this album.

best cd single.......2003-07-15
i just love Sclub and they are my Idols mostly Hannah and i'm really upset that they broke up. i mean that's what i heard. but i really recomend this cd.
An awesome song to go out with.......2003-07-01
I have to say that say goodbye is so worth buying. I love it. Also love aint gonna wait for you is a good track. S club have really matured and these two songs are brilliant! The videos rock too.
What a Way to Go Out!.......2003-05-29
Wow. I think that's the only word I could use when I first heard S Club's final single. It made me want to cry. It's really very beautiful. The video is great, too. I really like the transition from the verses to the chorus, the sound between it is cool. And everyone has a part in a verse in this (good, cause I'd be a bit peeved). I'm so upset that they won't be around anymore, but I suggest checking out S Club 8 (formerly S Club Juniors) if you like S Club. They are the perfect replacements for the S Club since they have to go; I just wish S Club weren't finished. But, "Love Ain't Gonna Wait (for You)" is really fun and dancey, so after you're crying over "Say Goodbye," listen to that and it'll perk you right up. When I heard "Love Ain't Gonna Wait (for You)" I thought, "OOH! This so is wicked!" The song makes you want to get up and dance when you hear it. The beat's a little hard to describe though. I suggest anyone who's ever liked S Club to get both "Say Goodbye" singles!!! Even if you haven't it's good, clean, fun pop. Good luck in the future to the S!!!

Say Goodbye to S Club.......2003-08-25
After almost 5 years together S Club go their own ways as Paul has done already.Let's see in 5 years they have made 5 tv series selling in more than 120 countries.A feature lentgh movie.3 great albums, in UK 4.Awesome singles.I'M GONNA CRY!They were my inspiration!Ever since I was in 2nd grade I wanted to be them.Ok, I'll shut up!
Say Goodbye-10/10-I'm gonna cry again! It's so beautiful their last single and ballad and #2.Well, all band members have a part, that would not be fair if not, and it's just amazing. No words just thoughts when you hear it.
Bittersweet-8/10-A nice lil' rap sung by Brad saying love should just be about your feelings and emotions.I really don't think this should be the b-side to their LAST SINGLE!!But all in all it's nice.
Love ain't gonna wait for you-10/10-Strongly upbeat with Jo.This is probably one of the most funky songs that is SO upbeat.I was just thinking, Boy, the S Club still loves to party!Awesome!!
The message-Jo, Jon, and Hannah leave a little goodbye message for you!Get Say Goodbye 1 to hear the other three.
I Just LOVED this single! S Club was my inspiration, and if you mention not a lot of their stuff is in U.S. So I'm just holding on to the few things I have.I'm also trying to get peaks at S Club 8 to see if they are my new inspirations, but oh well.BUY this album. It's worth every penny you've got.
S Club Say Goodbye.......2003-08-10
S Club includes Tina, Jo, Jon, Hannah, Bradley, and Rachel.
To focus on the album their last single Say Goodbye after spliting up for their own reasons, made #2 in UK. With Jo on lead, they make another smash. It's a slow song picking up on chourus.Say Goodbye which is track 1 is awesomly awesome! Bittersweet, track 2 is album version and the same from their album 7.Another slow song but greatly sweet and meaningful. They also have a video for the up beat song Love ain't gonna wait for you. The video moves right along with the song. Greatly powerful! And 3 of the S Clubbers ( I won't name ) leave a goodbye message for you. I REALLY REALLY like this album! You should definatley buy it!!! You are missing out if not!!! 4 awesome tracks you will treasure forever!!

Paulina is a Diva........2003-04-07
Paulina Rubio is one of the biggest singers in the latin market. Her album "Paulina" was nominated for 4 Grammy awards and became multi-platinum in the U.S.
"Border girl" is her latest album and her first in English. The album debuted at #11 in the Hot 200 of Billboard and had good critics. To start this project she released her first English single that became an international hit in English and in Spanish with its version "Si tu te vas". The song is full of energy is a great dance song and Paulina's voice is sexy and that makes a very good mix.
The video of the song was a million dollar budget and was also very good and hot.
Good work Paulina you're one of the best.
I'M IN SHOCKED!.......2002-07-15
Whoa!!
This girl sounds really cool.
I've just loved this song "Don't say goodbye" for the first time i've heard it in tv show.
Suddenly i bought this single, and it's amazing, i also like the spanish version "Si tu te vas" that is included too, and another song called "Fire", in it her voice sounds pretty awesome and really sexy.
I'm almost sure that if you buy this you will love it, you won't regret.
Excellent single..........2002-07-07
What can i say about Paulinas debut English single... Its very upbeat, and after a few listens its really kinda catchy. The video is similar to Kylies video for In Your Eyes. But thats where the similarities end. The video is eye catching, and is a perfect compliment to the song. Seeing as how this track is getting major airplay, video play (MTV), and racing up the Top 100, its a safe bet to say that Paulina has her first English language hit with Dont Say Goodbye.
The Most Unoriginal Singer of the Year.......2002-06-28
Paulina Rubio is not known for the most creative of lyrics, even in her Spanish albums. So when I heard she was crossing over, I did not expect anything groundbreaking (or even Shakira-esque). The video is a direct copy of Willa Ford's "I Wanna Be Bad" and the song sounds like a funked-up, techno'd out cover of something from the eighties.
Paulina mostly tries to be Jennifer Lopez, but the urban qualities that made Jennifer a success make Paulina's attempt laughable. I like her well enough, but Paulina needs to find a true sense of herself in her life and her music.
It's an okay dance track, but this woman's career needs quite a bit of work.
A shameless copy of Madonna's "VOGUE".......2002-06-13
Paulina's new song "Don't Say Goodbye" is a song intended to be a radio hit, but what I do not understand is why she copied Madonna`s style in Vogue?. In her previous album Paulina mixed up rhythms and those fusions made her a star in her own after being trying for several years to succeed. But I think that this song takes her one step back. I'm sure all of you have listened to Madonna's "Vogue" and once you get to listened Paulina's "Don't Say Goodbye" you'll get my point. But I'm sure that for its commercial potencial it'll be a worldwide success.
