For songwriters, there is a fine line between being unabashed and being unguarded. The first state intimates awareness: that one knows how she is being perceived and consciously decides to ignore, for better or for worse, any external criticism. The other, more favorable state suggests that the songwriter is not conscious of how people take her work: the songwriter as inert artist, creating for the sake of creation. Though it is indeed a fine distinction, Julie Doiron is clearly in the latter camp. She demonstrates as much on her newest full-length record Goodnight Nobody, recorded with friends Herman Dune and Dave Draves in a few days at various studios in France and Canada.

Described frequently in the press as an "indie-diva" or "chanteuse" of the highest power, founding Eric's Trip member Julie Doiron fits these well-intentioned approbations only in that she is a woman singer comfortable in her own skin. Doiron began her career in 1990s New Brunswick playing bass in Eric's Trip, a folky, psychedelic band that was to become the undisputed underground darling of Canadian music. Eric's Trip was the first of many maritime Canadians signed to Sub Pop and found international recognition, releasing several albums and touring widely. Following 1996's Purple Blue, Eric's Trip announced their breakup and Doiron embarked on her solo career, first releasing songs as Broken Girl and then under her own name. Since then she has worked with a veritable "who's who" of independent rock giants, including Dave Shouse (Grifters), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) and Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie, to name a few.

Including songs from the light hearted and fun to the poignant, this CD is a treasure that should not be missed by those loving the classic Broadway musical sound. Two voices (Karen Ziemba, currently Roxie Hart in Chicago, and David Garrison, currently in Titanic) and a Steinway piano partner in this recording, and the blend of Ziemba's and Garrison's voices is perfect. The versatility of Ziemba's voice throughout this recording is most impressive, In addition to being an extraordinary dancer, Ziemba once again proves herself an exceptional singer. Garrison is terrific as well. If you like "darker" musicals, avoid this. But if you want to hear an up-tempo musical score that will make you tap your toes and if you want to hear two voices that can be listened to again and again with the same initial pleasure, get this recording.

Doiron sounds like a young Cat Power or Scout Niblett with more stripped down, heartfelt pop tunes. Her vocals are downcast and somewhat repetitive over the whole album, and her songs' lack of refinement gives them a genuine melancholic feel.

I have heard this CD many times, it is my favorite Richard Tauber recording because it features the popular music (including operetta) that I love, the selections are all in supurb mono sound and because most of the songs are in English.

My favorites are "Vienna, City of My Dreams", "My Gypsy Dream Girl", Let Me Love You Tonight" and "Lippen Schweigen" (Merry Widow Waltz).

    Momzer has the ability to write lyrics that speak to real life and they resonate with everyone I have played the album for. Their sound rocks - but rocks with lyrics that actually mean something. I think they sound like REM - my husband says they sound like They Might be Giants.

    Either way - this is a band to watch.
