Customer Reviews:
NOT THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS........2006-03-17
First of all, these are not the original recordings. I have the original recordings of the Herman's Hermits songs, The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens, and Tobacco Road by the Nashville Teens. A side-by-side comparison clearly demonstrated to me that the songs on this compilation are NOT the originals.
Some of the tunes on this compilation are done well, for example, the tunes by The Association. But other songs are crusty sounding, murky, and coarse.
A little written message on the package states that the songs were done by the original artists. Perhaps they were. Perhaps they weren't. Perhaps they were done by one member of the original band 25 years after the original recording. What often makes a pop song successful is the producer and sound engineer. Thus, unless you have the original producer and sound engineers, it is unlikely that the remake will be able to capture the original essence, of what made the song a popular one.
The cover of this compilation shows a photograph of a girl in a miniskirt sitting on the hood of an automobile, where the radiator grill has two signs, one reading HAIGHT and the other ASHBURY (referring to territory of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Moby Grape). However, with the exception of the Beau Brummels, none of the bands in this compilation are from San Francisco, and none utilize any discernable "psychedelic" style. Thus, the cover might be a form of misrepresentation. ("Misrepresentation" is a tort, punishable in a court of civil law.) A more accurate cover might feature a stick of bubble gum, since much of what is found on the compilation is in the genre of "bubble gum" rock'n'roll music. What we find is bubble gum music, and not even the original bubble gum recordings.
