I've been listening to Trower for almost 40 years ...
he was once as good as any rock/blues guitarist going ...
this is THAT guy!!!!
this is neither sappy or layed back ... this is not merely a job ... this has that fire in the belly passion he was always known for.
You will not be disappointed.

Robin Trower's Live Out Of Time harkens back to the hey day of the 70's when Trower would stroll on stage, throw his head back and rock the stadium. Age has taken nothing away from Trower and with Davey Pattison at the helm for the vocals he has found a blues singer that can deliver. The opening song begins a hot set of live performed music that every Trower fan mst see. If you are looking for a DVD of an excellent live performance, then this is a must have DVD of one of the world's greatest unsung heroes of rock/blues.

I don't write many reviews. For this DVD, I thought I would. This is a tremendous showcase of one of the underrated guitar gods out there. He showcases about five new songs which are all fantastic. I've followed Trower's career since around 1976. These new songs are as good as rockers I have heard anytime. He starts with Too Rolling Stoned and finishes with the Little Bit of Sympathy. In between alot of great rock and electric blues. I never had the chance to see this guy live and I was blown away. It looks like only about 100 people or so are at this gig. Actually, the crowd is not very enthusiastic. They should have been. The sound quality is amazing and the focus is on Trower's playing mostly. His lead singer sounds eerily close to James Dewar. I thought the guy did a great job. I don't want to ramble but if you are a Trower fan, this is a must. I thought the new songs, again, were fantastic and enough classics like Bridges of Sighs and Day of the Eagle sprinkled in to keep it going. A must buy.......

I was sorely disappointed...the entire CD is littered with commentary about the music by the English horn player. While the information she provides is potentially interesting to some listeners, I was wanting a music selection of dedicated English horn music. I found the (lengthy) verbal excerpts distracting and irritating to the point that I never listened to the CD again after it's initial run.

The music is great, though, when it's actually playing, despite the fact that you don't get the entire piece...

5 out of 5 stars Get the 4-disc set.......2005-11-24

Yep, this one cd will wet your appetite for the wizardry of Charlie, but I think you'd be better off getting the 4-disc set. I've been studying his solos since the 70's, and I still find him refreshing. The fact that he died at 23 makes me think of him as another Jimi Hendrix (without the self-destructive tendencies). If you are a guitar player or a just a fan of this musical era, you won't be disappointed. My goal is to get everything he ever recorded. Make sure you get Swing to Bop.

I knew that CHARLIE CHRISTIAN was among the first to play the electric guitar,but i had never heard him play before i bought this cd.The talent was there to be sure and god knows where it could have brought him if death had not reclamed him at such an early age.Liner notes here are excellent because they explain well the context of those recordings.You'll enjoy hearing about this guy from LES PAUL who knew him.Who can talk about a musician better than another musician?Considering the age of those recordings,the sound is quite good.If you think that BOY MEETS GOY is a boogie-woogie,you just might be not far from the truth.

When I listen to this CD, I can't decide if I'm listening with a Jazz musician's ear or if I'm listening for simple sheer enjoyment of the tunes. The tunes as well as the solos are blistering yet catchy. A showcase for virtuosos who don't forget they're creating music with other people. It's wonderful.

Unfortunately, the CD is VERY short. And like ALL of Christian's recordings, even though I love the entire Benny Goodman band, I never feel like there's enough Charlie Christian.

The sound recording is as good as you'll get for the 40's. It doesn't get better than this. You'll be amazed at how good the quality is.

This CD is definitely worthy of a space in your collection.

The wonderful remastering makes for great clarity, and CC's playing has influenced guitarists worldwide for generations. But as a sampler from the new Columbia box set, this CD is simply too short -- less than 25 minutes long. Why not put out a "best of" selection filling an entire CD? If you're looking for a one-disk volume of CC, you may not find better sound than this, but you can certainly find a more generous helping of his musical genius.

This is a one-disk teaser for the newly-released box set and, at the same time, a brief but effective introduction to an innovative and influential musician. The remastered sound is excellent for 60-plus-year-old recordings and the peformances are, of course, outstanding. My only quibble is that, since Christian earned his fame with the commercially-released recordings of these songs, why does this CD feature so many alternate versions? This is one of those releases that can't decide if it is targeting beginners or collectors. Can't fault the music, though.

    A delightful carillon recording, although I think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew some of the British folk tunes played. The CD is made interesting by including five different British carillons and five carillonneurs, the best being Trevor Workman. Also included is a track of domestic clocks playing the familiar "Westminster" chimes, and the very unfamiliar "Cambridge" chimes, plus a cuckoo clock!

        I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.

        I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.

        2 out of 5 stars It's No Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic... But it's ok.......2003-12-07

        Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).

        So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.

        Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.
