Album Description

A superb quartet featuring Jim Taylor and friends on hammered dulcimer, fiddle, banjo and guitar, playing music for square dances, hoe-downs, and minstrel shows; for sitting around the campfire or socializing in the parlor ... With fascinating liner notes telling the story of each tune, this album offers 70+ minutes of music (including Gary Owen, Haste to the Wedding, Arkansas Traveler, Seneca Square Dance, Booth Shot Lincoln) -- a rare treat for lovers of string band music and a treasure trove for students of the War Between the States. The Civil War Collection is a co-production of Gourd Music and Pearl Mae Music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best sounds I have ever heard.......2007-02-13

This music style is great. Unfortunately this music style ( and others) are very rare in Berlin, Germany. Is there more music from Jim Taylor?
I shall buy them.....

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this very much.......2006-05-30

I jam in the mountains with a group that plays both Irish music and what they call "old time music." This collection falls into both categories.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Traditional Tunes.......2005-07-05

When I first heard this, I played it through three times in a row. The hammered dulcimer, the fiddle and the banjo make you travel back in time to music played on the porch or at a dance. They do a great job with these. Very pleasant listening!
You get 74 minutes of lilting music that has you tapping your foot. Even an oldie like "Turkey in the Straw" sounds fresh at the hands of Jim Taylor.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Tunes & Great Liner Notes.......2005-05-09

Playing music was one of the few ways Civil War soldiers had to break the mind-numbing tedium of camp life in the weeks and months between battles. Back home, in civilian life, these tunes would be played at barn dances and hoe-downs, but around the camp fires they became a welcome distraction from the war. The old fiddle tunes in this impressive collection were all current during the 1860s, and would certainly have been in the repertoire of camp fiddlers both North and South. Several of these tunes take their names from incidents in the war, like The Rebel Raid, Bragg's Retreat, or Hell Broke Loose in Georgia.
`The playing on this instrumental collection is first rate; I particularly enjoy the lively fiddling of Bruce Greene. As a fiddler myself, I found the tune arraignments to be simple and straightforward, and was able to add several of these tunes to my own repertoire after repeated listening. The liner notes provided with the CD are outstanding - extensive notes are included for each tune, including Civil War stories and legends that have become part of each tune's lore. This CD is a great addition to any collection of Civil War or old timey music.
It is for reasons of personal taste that I only rated this fine CD as four stars. As a fiddler, I am partial to fiddle music, and almost all of the tunes here are old fiddle tunes. Jim Taylor, however, plays a hammer dulcimer, and plays or shares lead on most of the tunes. Even though Mr. Taylor is a fine player, I find that the dulcimer lacks the power and verve of a fiddle. It is a fine point of taste, but worth noting. Even with this caveat, this is the finest collection of its kind, and I enthusiastically recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent old-timey pickin' and hammerin'.......2002-12-21

It is so rare these days to here a male style hammer dulcimer player, such as Jim Taylor, that is playing with synchopation and a driving rhythm. I suppose that is politically incorrect to say these days. However, this style of dulcimer playing is very different than the harp like exquisite Celtic tunes of a Maggie Sansone. This is one of the few CD's out there that has this rare, near extinct art form. Dulcimers could be backpacked or horse hauled into remote areas, whereas pianos were the luxury of the monied class. While they had their pianos, linens, polished silverware and servants, the people that had the guts to fight the civil war on both sides or be a pioneer in the old west had their music. The only thing that is missing is friends, fellow soliders or family gathered around a camp fire or woodstove. There is also excellent banjo provided by Sheila Adams ( yes, a female banjo player ) and fiddle provided by Bruce Greene. Sheila is providing here a smooth finger style lead and counterpoint banjo. Bruce is using the flatter faced fiddle to its best advantage for its double notes and slides. This provides voice like expressiveness. Several songs have a dulcimer, banjo, fiddle shared lead. The songs themselves are timeless and you keep humming or whistling them long after listening. It is more than just historic value here. If re-issued as simply old time blue grass, it may be closer to the truth and accessible to a wider audience that may still be traumatized by their high school history class. My wish list for future albums is to please include Bodhran ( Irish Drum ), spoons and bones, and/or Octave Mandolin. The Mandolin is a perfect complement to dulcimer.

Since 1975 Motörhead--spearheaded by the grungy, iconic British metalhead Lemmy Kilmister--has been churning out speedy, macho, aggro anthems, including "Ace of Spades," "Killed by Death," and "Eat the Rich." The phrases "trendy" or "critical favorites" have never been attached to the Grammy-nominated band, and Hammered isn't the record to change Motörhead's antiestablishment standing. The 11-song outing (plus two bonus tracks) will, however, satiate longtime fans. The power trio rages--complete with piercing guitar solos and double-bass drums--on the urgent and winning "Brave New World," and is only slightly more mainstream on "Walk a Crooked Mile," which boasts melodic choruses and backup vocals, and crunchy rhythms matched with Lemmy's trademark gruff, guttural talk-singing. Lemmy's no sex symbol, and it's disquieting to hear him sing somewhat romantic lyrics on "Dr. Love" and "Mine All Mine." The songs like "No Remorse" and "Voices from the War" seem more suited to the singer-bassist's brusque persona. In fact, Hammered's most definitive Motörhead-esque cut is probably the bloody "Red Raw," which will give all but the most practiced headbangers whiplash. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Motorhead shines with class again!.......2007-04-06

Lemmy,Mikkey Dee, and Phillip Campbell write and record another excellent album, If your a Motorhead fan you will like this one a lot!!

5 out of 5 stars Another classic Motorhead disk!.......2007-02-14

Another great disk by Lemmy & Co. Always true to their (his) original goal and have never wandered from it. Motorhead seem destined to go on forever!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not great but HEY! Its Motorhead!.......2005-10-09

This album honestly is just not good. Dont get me wrong, motorhead is definaltey one of my top three favorite bands, and ive seen them twice in concert, but this album just doesnt cut it! It is waaaaay too melodic and poetic. I know everyone was waiting for another motorhead album three years ago, but this definatley did not satisfy me. If you are someone new to motorhead, dont get this, get bomber, ace of spades, overkill, and no sleep til' hammersmith first. Bit seriously I am so glad inferno came out, it seriously kicked ass go get that one too.

4 out of 5 stars Motorhead Will Never Die.......2005-07-23

I was really stunned by this album, because it got great peaks in U.K Charts, European Charts, and yet in the U.S. this album almost doesn't exist. This album is really very good, starts off a little rocky but when Brave New World hits, and that impressive solo pulled off by Phil Campbell is really impressive. Voices From The War is a very serious song but is very well done. Shut Your Mouth is a more fun track, sounds like Motorhead really has fun with it. Kill The World has a great bass sound pulled off by Lemmy. No Remorse, not only brings back an old title from Motorhead but a very good song, a slow rough Bass sound and an impressive guitar solo makes the song really good. Also, Red Raw brings back some of the ingredients from Ace Of Spades, but this tune surprisingly moves faster. I forgot the title of the next track, but it is all poetry with Triple H doing a little bit of vocals himself. Very short but very good, Lemmy is extremely awesome. Also, Motorhead's WWE Track The Game, which is not exactly a classic Motorhead song, but definitely a classic for Triple H and WWE, the song is probably the most original entrance song i've ever heard. Overnight Sensation is kind of lousy, doesn't have good sound.

Overall, this album is classic Motorhead, with some new sound in some songs and that Classic Motorhead sound in the rest, this album is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars At last I have found it!.......2005-03-29

(the title= i lost this cd and just found it about an hour ago) I am a young (born in 1992) fat english punk who lives in California. without this band, i might never have been born. My dad before dating someone always used to ask 'what is your goal in life and what is your faverite band?" when my parents met in a pub in london called 'the pheonix and firkin' my mum replied "to be happy, and motorhead." if motorhead wasn't her faverite band they may never have dated. anyway, I love this cd, although i prefer older classics like 'ace of spades' this is wonderful and brilliant. Red Raw is one of my faverite songs. Motorhead is fulfilling the musical needs of my generation and my mums, and hopefully will coninue to for many generations to come.

This two CD set contains a huge variety of hammered dulcimer music, all of it played with taste and great talent. Boulding continues to be one of the finest players out there, playing on instruments he makes himself. Especially wonderful are his versions of "Redwing," "Gary Owens," "Canon in D Major," and "The Theme from Romeo and Juliet." This entire album sparkles. It's a treasure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy Dulcimer!.......2004-12-02

If you enjoy Celtic music and the sounds of the dulcimer, this is a must-own CD. The melodies are all uplifting and joyful and this CD is a great listen whenever tedium strikes. Don't let the low prices fool you- this is a very enjoyable CD and one you will be glad to play over and over for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Dreams -- dreamy!.......2002-10-18

My introduction to O'Carolan - cheerful, beautiful
compositions - I once thought the dulcimer was
uninteresting, but this whole CD is totally addictive,
some soft and mellow, some enchanting and upbeat. I got
Carolan's Cup too and that is also great, but as a
reviewer before me said, different mix of instruments.
Now I've capitulated and ordered Carolan's Cottage.
Joemy Wilson is a wonderful interpreter of O'Carolan.

5 out of 5 stars Hammered Dulcimer & Instrumental Irish Folk at its best!!.......2000-10-14

If you want beautiful, light and happy instrumental Irish folk music, it doesn't get any better than Joemy Wilson and this disc.

I bought this about 11 years ago (before the "celtic craze") and it still uplifts and cheers me. I explored the work of many other Celtic folk artists; but, her work is still the best. Perhaps its most sparkling quality is that fact that it DOES sound so perfectly classic and timeless - this music is the best you would expect of those catchy old Irish ditties (...not to belittle them! Turlough wrote beautiful songs!)

Out of all my CDs, this is the only one I can listen to that can always 100% cure any dull, melancholy mood in no time.

Oh, and not all of her CDs sound the same!! Pay attention to the different instruments and guest musicians (e.g., Anisa) on each for sound clues. This one has no guitar, but there are flutes and other strings here and there flitting about very supportively of her hammered dulcimer. If you prefer the more grounded sound of guitars and less high-frequency buzzing, you may prefer a disc like Joemy's lovely "Carolan's Cottage" instead.

There are some very energetic and bouncy songs on this CD! But, there are some calm ones, too! For example, "The Ash Grove" - a slow, classic tune that anyone could recognize - is performed with its melody nurtured in a beautifully respectful way. I am impressed how Joemy Wilson's music and her independent Californian Dargason Music label has survived amidst the "biggies" for all these years. JUST BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Most beautiful Celtic CD I have heard.......1998-12-14

This is the most beautiful collection of celtic music that I have heard. The combination of flute and hammered dulcimer is wonderful, enchanting, and lightens the heart. I highly recommend it for even the hardest heart.

5 out of 5 stars This is how to begin Christmas.......2002-11-27

I can't give this marvelous album any greater tribute than to say that this is how I begin Christmas: on Christmas Eve, after all the frantic rush of the day, when darkness has come and before I go to church, I light candles and listen to Madeline MacNeil sing "Of the Father's Love Begotten." For weeks before that, we are all inundated with an aural clutter of holiday sounds and noise. Somehow this beautiful album, with its haunting purity of voice and instrument, and especially this ancient and sacred hymn, clears all that away and brings us back to the joy and holiness of the season. Thank you, Madeline MacNeil!

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Soul.......2001-12-19

I have had the absolute joy of owning this since 1983! (in cassette form, mind you!) and played it until the tape wore thin. To own it in CD form is pleasure indeed. Madeline MacNeil's sweet voice is incomparable! The hammer dulcimer rings with great clarity and purity. Christmas music is intended as holy music and this CD represents the true meaning of Christmas - to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. My humble opinion cannot do justice to the beautiful sounds on this cd. Buy it! Play it!

    5 out of 5 stars Heaven's music on Earth!.......1999-11-07

The Holly and the Ivy featuring Madeline MacNeil is truly a work of art. For those who have not had the pleasure of hearing Ms. MacNeil's vocal and dulcimer talent, this CD is a must have purchase. It is Heaven's music on earth.

    Album Description

Turlough O'Carolan, last of the Irish bards, was born in 1670 near Nobber, County Westmeath, but moved with his family to the Roscommon-Leitrim area while very young. His father was employed at an iron foundry operated by the St. George and MacDermott Roe families. Totally blinded in his late teens by smallpox, Turlough O'Carolan was taken in by Mrs. MacDermott Roe at the Alderford house, near Boyle. Here, he studied under a harper for three years. A more creative tale claims that O'Carolan once slept on a fairy rath and forever after heard fairy music to inspire him. "The Harper's Reverie" captures some of O'Carolan's fanciful musings.

At age 21, equipped with a horse, a guide and money, O'Carolan began his career as an itinerant harper although he seldom traveled much beyond the province of Connacht. In the Irish bardic tradition, the harper was popular and held high social status in the "Big Houses," and the tunes composed for his patrons were referred to as "planxties" (musical tributes). Considered as much more than a mere musician or composer, O'Carolan was an honored guest of his patrons and regarded as a sage who articulated eloquence, wit and profundity. And, of course, he kept his patrons informed of the latest gossip collected while traveling the Irish countryside. If, by chance, he encountered a less than hospitable host (as he once did at the house of Jennings of Mayo), O'Carolan might be heard ranting, "Devil take the glass that was meant for a dwarf, and the same for the hand that didn't fill it by half!"

O'Carolan had numerous romantic affections, and some of his compositions were written for his lady loves. Many of his songs addressed to Bridget Cruise, his youthful yet hopeless attachment, have been irretrievably lost.

The influences of Italian composers such as Geminiani and Corelli show in some of O'Carolan's works. The sources for most of the tunes played in this compilation are Edward Bunting's "Ancient Music of Ireland" collections. Bunting transcribed and arranged many of the tunes he heard at the 1792 Belfast Festival of Harpers, a gathering of musicians and musicologists interested in preserving this important heritage. At the Harpers' Festival, Bunting witnessed only one harper still using the old fingernail technique (rather than using the flesh of the finger), and by the 1820s the great school of Irish harp playing had greatly disappeared.

In 1738, O'Carolan died and was buried at the cemetery of the old 6th century O'Duignan Abbey at Kilronan, his grave adjoining the vault of the MacDermotts. In 1990, my wife (also a harpist) and I were fortunate to attend the Turlough O'Carolan Thirteenth International Harp Festival and visited O'Carolan's gravesite. The Festival is held in the picturesque Irish village of Keadue, County Roscommon, at the foot of the Arigna Mountains near the shores of Lough Meelagh in the heart of O'Carolan country.

Near Castlerea, one of O'Carolan's harps can be found at the 45-room Clonalis House, the ancestral home of the Clan O'Conor, who gave 11 high kings to Ireland and 24 kings to Connacht. Another of O'Carolan's harps, a large sycamore instrument with 35 strings, is on exhibit in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin. During his years of itinerant minstrelsy, O'Carolan was said to have composed about 200 pieces of music, although many have been lost.

Join us on a musical journey to shape a portrait of another age, one that displays the joys of life and revelry that marked O'Carolan's day. The Irish simply called it "Luinneach" (merry music). We hope that you'll experience an epiphany from the beauty, color, emotion, gentleness and melodic expression of Turlough O'Carolan's musical compositions. Thank you for your support of this music.

    4 out of 5 stars A Traveler's Dream.......2007-05-20

This is the first CD I have from Maggie Sansone. I saw that she has several out. It is very melodic and rather traditional Celtic music; very enjoyable. I would definately purchase another of her CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, mature and mysterious.......2004-01-02

This recording, subtitled "Celtic Explorations", is a masterpiece of understated intrigue. Ever changing, the moods and styles range from lilting, traditional Celtic and dreamy New Age to shimmering Persian taxims and innovative modern chamber music. Maggie Sansone's original compositions and arrangements are defined by her scintillating playing of the hammered dulcimer and supported by guest instrumentalists who provide gentle, multilayered accompaniments. Featured prominently is Bobby Read, an amazingly versatile musician who seems to play just about every wind, keyboard and percussion instrument under the sun! Also contributing are a host of other artists, many of whom appear as soloists or accompanists on other releases produced by Sansone under the label "Maggie's Music". They are: Al Petteway on guitar; multi-national fiddlers Bonnie Rideout (Scottish), Sara Nisenson (Irish) and Andrea Hoag (Swedish); flutist Aran Olwell; harper David Sheim; Debbie Hunter on viola da gamba; T.J. Johnson on mandolin and cittern; and percussionists Paddy League and Robert Jospe. The dreamy, imaginative wanderings of "A Traveler's Dream" are a treat -- something different and well worth hearing. If you enjoy this sort of music, you may like the innovative Celtic- and Renaissance-inspired work of the "classical" group Ensemble Galilei as well. Try also Maggie Sansone's other solo recordings, and "Celtic Mist: Quiet Moods From Ancient Lands", a sampler album showcasing the gentle elegance of various "Maggie's Music" artists.

5 out of 5 stars It rises from simple folk to highly expressive music..........2001-09-20

The hammered dulcimer is a perfect instrument. It's melodic in a percussive way, perfect for combining with other instruments. With the right musicians, the dulcimer rises from simple folk instrument into a highly expressive, extremely moving one. Maggie Sansone is a worthy musician who has developed a true feel for its capabilities. She wrings every ounce of emotion from it. In her hands, it not only dances, it swings. Her understanding plus her musicianship allows her not just to adapt traditional tunes but also to write pieces suited to it. A Traveler's Dream delves nicely into different cultures while retaining Celtic toots, with Sansone leading the way, assisted by the occasional addition of fiddle, guitar, percussion and more

5 out of 5 stars Mystical Moods of Celtic music and more!.......2000-10-25

Maggie's sixth solo release and it exlores in innovative ways.. music from Ireland, Scoland, Sweden, Cape Breton and the Northumberland region of England. Also are Persian and sufi-influenced compositions by Sansone and sets celebrating the ancient Celtic holiday's of Samhain and Lughnasa. This album is one of the most innovative album featuring hammered dulcimer around with its multi-layer textures and layering of sometimes 3 hammered dulcimer sounds together, plus various tonal qualities are explored with different textures of mallets on the strings and use of other mallet struck instruments and along with complex origianal compositions more like tone poems that takes the listener on a mysterious journey. A visionary meeting of Celtic and world music influences.

4 out of 5 stars A trip, not an adventure.......1999-07-02

Like Maggie Sansone's other recordings, this is tasteful, exquisitely performed, and a pleasure to listen to. The tunes span the Celtic world, and the arrangements enhance the qualities of the acoustic instruments rather than blurring them in an electronic mist. What seems to be missing is guts: the traveler doesn't actually take a journey (and return with blistered feet and a pack full of silk and incense), she just dreams about it! Or, to paraphrase the title of one of her other albums, she dances on the shore rather than diving into the waves. This is possibly my personal taste rather than anything actually "lacking" in the CD. But some tracks (such as the "Dervish" improvisation and the intriguing "Bear Dance") show hints that she's capable of considerably more original and passionate work, and I'd like to hear what would happen if she turned loose the Wild Woman side of her personality!
