Stephen Holden, The New York Times
Inflects the astringent twang of The Velvet Underground with the drone of R.E.M.
Product Description
The Silos' Hasta La Victoria has been reissued with 4 Bonus Tracks! It was written in a bay window in Hoboken looking across the Hudson River at the piers and skyscrapers of Manhattan, during a voyage across the country that included bat sightings in Texas as well as blackjack in Vegas, and finally in a small office on Hollywood Boulevard looking across at a mural of Bogey, Bette, Marilyn and Gable. It spans broken marriages, revived marriages, lousy love affairs, perfect love affairs, futile attempts at love affairs, futile attempts at auto body repair, the L.A. Riots, the L.A. Smog, the L.A. Transvestites on Santa Monica Boulevard, and ends with an attempt to fuse the Atlantic and the Pacific and "Find A Way" to the next musical horizon.
Originally released in Europe in 1992 and America in 1994, the new version of Hasta La Victoria contains all the blood and drama of the original plus four special song gems added into the soup. It is an eclectic stew of styles and sonic landscapes, most reminiscent of The Silos' first album, About Her Steps. Some tracks swagger with the raw power of cassette 4-track, others bask in the glory of immaculate 24-track with digital enhancement. "Miles Away" and "All Night" groove, "Henrietta" and "All Spring All Summer" rock, "My Big Car" grooves and rocks, "Your Last Life" dreams, and "Sometimes When I Come Over" and "Try Tomorrow" weep.

Customer Reviews:
Strong Country Rock Album.......2003-04-10
Though not quite as strong as the self-titled album, "Victoria" still contains many fine moments. The slowly unfolding opener, "Miles Away," is one of the band's best songs. It is followed by a decent rocker in "All I Know is Your Name." Other highlights include the driving love affair of "My Big Car," the sweet "Nobody but You," "All Night," with backing vocals by Victoria Williams (the Victoria of the title) and the closing "Find a Way." Not every song is a winner, but enough of them are to make this an album well worth owning.
Overall, a fine album from a band that successfully turned its back on the major labels.
None better...........2000-10-10
