Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has made more than 20 seasonal recordings since its first one (for broadcast to U.S. servicemen in Europe and the Pacific on Christmas Day, 1945), but none finer than this one, led by the group's newly appointed music director, Craig Jessop. Featuring lush arrangements by Mack Wilberg and Barlow Bradford, it emphasizes the gentler, more rapturous moods of the holiday, especially in such beautiful settings as Wilberg's of "Whence Is That Goodly Fragrance?" and "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" and Bradford's fantasy on "What Child Is This?" Balancing these are several selections in which the choir's blazing, full-voiced splendor shines forth, including Wilberg's festive arrangements of "Joy to the World" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," as well as Bradford's colorful take on "Pat-a-pan." The choir's singing is magnificent. Listen to the way the men lead off "The First Noel" and to how the full chorus builds the piece to a gorgeous climax, or to the virtuosic job the singers do in the "Carol of the Bells" (with its echoes of Rachmaninoff's The Bells). Impressively backed by the Orchestra at Temple Square, this is a disc to treasure, and a tribute to the admirable work being done in Salt Lake City by maestro Jessop--who now seems poised to inherit the mantle of Robert Shaw. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy or a worthier musician. --Ted Libbey

A Mormon Tabernacle Christmas CD.......2007-01-19
CD arrived in perfect condition; however, the front of the jewel case was cracked.
Is this the best Christmas album ever recorded?.......2005-12-29
There have been so many Christmas albums over the years, when I saw this I thought 'Oh no, not another one?' Then I looked at the track titles and saw that this was something different. Among the traditional carols there were many unfamiliar titles (I say this as a foreigner - some may be better known in the USA than in Australia). I decided to buy the SACD version of this release. What a revelation! Where do I start?
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is famous for producing very enjoyable choral recordings, usually with a religious theme, but frankly, on an international scale, they do not rate with the best (compare them with some of the better UK symphonic choirs, which is how the Tabernacle choir must be categorized, to see what I mean). But on this album, they have placed themselves well and truly in the international arena. Every aspect of their singing is, to me, perfect - diction, phrasing, musical expression, ensemble, and of greatest importance, a total involvement with and perfect expression of the words and the music. They don't sing about Santa Claus; they sing about the true meaning of Christmas, and mean it. And you really hear how well they sing in the few 'a capella' sections - musical moments that are unsurpassed.
Then there are the arrangements. These express everything from the implicit grandeur of God coming down to earth, through to the greatest tenderness of the simplicity of his birth as Jesus. All the orchestrations and choral arrangements are completely fresh and unhackneyed, ranging from the most exquisite harmonies through to extraordinarily bold key changes - the people who did these arrangements are amongst the best in the business.
Then there is the program. This ranges from fresh arrangements of old favourites (sample the fantasy on 'What Child is This?'), to an exploration of the most beautiful unfamiliar songs and carols you will ever hear.
Finally the engineering. Telarc are famous for the audiophile standards of their recordings, and this is one of their best. The SACD fully utilizes the multiple channels, without resorting to gimmickry. If ever there was a 'you-are-there' recording, this is it.
In summation: no matter how many Christmas CDs you own; buy this one too. The CD version works well (and remember, if you buy the SACD version - Telarc SACD-60552 - it will play on an ordinary CD player as well), but if you have the equipment to play the multi-channel SACD, you will get an even more rewarding experience.
All the above may sound over the top, but, as you may have gathered, this release has had a massive impact on me at every level. It is a prize in my collection. The greatest Christmas album ever? Quite possibly.
A Perfect Traditional Christmas Album.......2005-12-28
What Shall We Give to the Babe in the Manger. What an incredible piece, and how well- conducted it is. The music brings tears to my eyes, to be sure. The album is a classic example of how holiday choral music should be performed. This is done with spirit and tenderness.
If only other orchestras, choirs, and arrangements could be performed as well. Some are, but how often do we purchase an album just to find it not what we like? Fortunately, one can listen to clips of each of the pieces, before purchasing.
"What Shall We Bring" is becoming now my fondest Christmas song. The performance by the Mormon Choir and orchestra is incredible, to me. I've found other versions of the song, but this version is the finest, by far.
For those interested about my favorite piece: It is from a traditional Catalonian Carol, translated from Spanish, called, "The Son of Mary."
Stunningly beautiful.......2005-12-14
I have heard and enjoyed many recordings from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir over the years. Then, it happened. I heard Joy to the World from this album on the radio and it sent chills up my spine. That never happened. A thrilling arrangement. The other music equally excellent as described. If you have never been big fan of Christmas music, get this album and surprise yourself.
Beautiful...Intriguing...This is Christmas.......2004-12-09
The Mormon Tabernacle choir is already known for their beautiful voices of praise. When you add the orchestra of temple square and the spirit of christmas, you receive even more. This CD portrays the birth of Christ. It is beautiful!

If Badfinger never quite shook off the mixed-blessings of its early Beatles associations, they at least carved out a comfortable niche for themselves in the early 1970s, largely by carrying on the sterling pop sense of their famous sponsors. Sadly, the Fab Four parallels wouldn't end there; Badfinger, too, ultimately fell victim to recriminations and rapacious record-biz dealings, but with more tragic results. Just months after finishing the December '74 sessions for this last album, band leader Pete Ham committed suicide (bandmate Tom Evans would follow suit eight years later) and its session tapes would eventually vanish into the mists of memory and mystery. Like many an unreleased project, Head First then became something of a lost legend. This double-disc set marks its first release, packaged with a second disc of album demos and outtakes. Though the album finally presented here is a sonically imperfect rough-mix tape, the band's fabled pop genius still shines through, especially on "Lay Me Down," "Keep Believing," and "Turn Around." Still, there's an inescapable sense of bitterness that bubbles to the surface, especially in Evans's rough-hewn "Hey Mr. Manager" and "Rock 'N' Roll Contract." Only drummer Mike Gibbins seems to shake it all off with the good-natured "Moonshine" and "Rockin' Machine." Fans of Ham's demo anthologies on Ryko will find a few more gems on the second disc, though even his normally upbeat demeanor is laced with frustration on "Smokin' Guns," "Nothing to Show," and "I Can't Believe In." A bittersweet epitaph to a great band--and a sobering lesson in the sordid business of pop music. -Jerry McCulley
Album Description
The final studio album by Badfinger before vocalist/guitarist Pete Ham's suicide in April 1975 - is certainly one of the most legendary unreleased albums in rock history. For more than two decades Badfinger fans have waited for this album to be issued. Finally, 25 years after it was recorded, this long - lost album can take it's rightful place alongside Badfinger classics as 'No Dice', 'Straight Up', and 'Wish You Were Here'. Fully titled 'Head First-The Last Sessions'. Disc 2 is a bonus CD of rare demos. Double slimline jewel case housed in a slipcase. 2000 release.
Customer Reviews:
Badfinger's best? .......2006-10-17
Head First was the last Badfinger album by the orginal group. Joey Molland had left the group prior to its recording and because of the conflict with their manager and Warner Brothers, it was wasnt released until 2000. It is clear that this recording was rushed and some of the songs sound like it. It has its moments, Pete's songs,"Lay Me Down" and "Keep Believing" are what you would expect from him. Bob Jackson replaced Joey in the line up and wrote "Turn Around", an excellent song but not the "Badfinger" sound we were accustom to hearing. Tom's "Rock and Roll Contract" is rough and much better on "Say No More". "Hey Mr. Manager" is one of Tom's best songs in a couple of albums. But his composition with Bob Jackson, "Passed Fast", is without a doubt one of the best Badfinger songs ever and the reason to buy this cd. Mike's songs sound rough and unfinshed other than "Moonshine" with features vocals by Tom, Bob and himself. The recording of "Head First" was marked by the sad situation the group was in and the absense of Joey Molland and it shows. The second cd is rough demos and fragments which us fans might appreciate. The overall package is nice but I wish they could have put more effort in the artwork, maybe pictures of the group or use Tom's original vision of the cover art. All said, it just doesnt move like any other Badfinger or Badfinger reunion album. Certainly not their best.
Just think... No Stan Polley..........2005-12-19
Give the band a few more months of rest and this album would have blown away anything in its day. PERIOD. Great album anyways. Puts all of that era's Lennon, Harrison or Starr albums to shame and damn near equals McCartney's.
If only this was the swan song.......2004-06-30
This album was rumored to have been in the works for years when it was finally released, and as expected it was full of great songs that differed slightly from the band's hey-day. I find myself listening to it only occasionally though, unlike it's Apple and Warner Brothers brethren. I think it's the sense of desperation that some of the music seems to have and ultimately the sad end of Pete and Tommy that take away from my ability to enjoy it. 7 Park Avenue and Golders Green give a pretty decent idea of what we might have come to expect had Pete Ham lived, but Tommy had only the two pseudo-Badfinger albums to show us what we missed when we lost him. This is a far better epitaph, despite the undertone of sadness.
Shouldve been one disc (hence the 4 stars).......2004-03-24
The final Badfinger album with Pete Ham is very good. Trying to keep the Wish You Were Here (or as Mike Gibbins called it in the Gary Katz documentary "Wish You Were Where?"). Pete's demo of Lay Me Down is in G, while the offical version is in E. These Apple mixes mixed on Dec 15, 1974 are far better than Warner's mixes produced in Feb 75. The Warner mix of Lay Me Down is in mono and has a tape fault right at the start of the song (although if you have the cassette version of The Best of Volume 2, you can somehow get rid of it by playing it a lot like I did before I got the cd). Rock And Roll Contract shouldve had the little speech more upfront (maybe it was in the Warner mix?). Most of the bonus demos werent recorded during that time (as Mike said in a Dan Matovina interview). Keep Your Country Tidy has a bit of Lay Me Down although Pete didnt know it at the time. Anyway, get this disc now! I found it at Circuit City for 18 bucks and i know ill never see that price again, but do compare prices at all the shops. I never pay more than 20 bucks for a double disc set and neither should you!
Head First Finally Released.......2004-02-10
This was supposed to be Badfinger's 3rd album, but several reasons it was not released until year 2000. But well worth waiting for.
The recordings for Badfinger's third Warner album began at the end of November 1974. You would expect the members of the band at this point to be totally exhausted from touring, financial worries and the departure of Molland; and of course they were. Never the less they were still convinced that they could/had to work their way out of their crisis. For their latest British tour they had recruited Bob Jackson (keyb.), because of a short departure of Pete Ham. This tour had been as a 5-piece and by the end of the tour Molland had left the band. Two you producers were found for the new album; Kenny Kerner and Ritchie Wise - before Badfinger they had produced The Stories.
New songs did not come easily to Pete Ham at this point; he was losing faith in the the whole thing, but he worked hard to come up with more quality material. Of his three contributions for Head First the two of them are among his best ever. The opener "Lay Me Down" is a very catchy and powerful rocker with great commercial potential. "Keep Believing" is a typical Ham ballad; a very beautiful melody. Pete's third track is a short instrumental called "Saville Row". Tom Evans is back as a very important songwriter on the album. He'd written two songs alone and two songs in collaboration with with Mike and Mike/Bob. The first two are angry comments to the music business; both of them very intense; especially Mr. Manager is bound to become an all-time Badfinger favourite. Rock'n Roll Contract was rerecorded for Say No More, but this version is much better - I love the middle part. Passed Fast and Moonshine are well-known from Best of Badfinger Vol 2 - both of them very strong and indicating that this new line-up might have become their most interesting ever. Bob Jackson demonstrates powerful vocals and songwriting abilities on Turn Around; a track that could have been written and sung by Steve Winwood. Mike wrote Back Again and Rocking Machine. Rocking Machine is a charming little tune; I think Mike sounds a lot like George Harrison.
All in all the band play and sing their best on this album that is among Badfinger's strongest. Pete Ham does not sound burdened by having to play all guitars and they all appear extraordinary inspired.
The original master-tapes which have been considered lost seem to have been rediscovered in the vaults of Warner Brothers. This means that they may release the album some time in the future. or maybe license it to another label. Until that may happen luckily we have this Snapper release remastered from Bob Jackson's tape copy of the original Apple mixes.
The bonus tracks are all great songs; some are them are at an early stage and the sound quality is not very good on most of them. Still it's always nice to hear new songs by Pete Ham. I believe his 4 new songs here could have been developed into great Badfinger tracks. "I Can't Believe In" and "Keep Your Country Tidy" are great tunes. Of the other songs I especially like Mike's You Ask Yourself Why
My favourites: Lay Me Down, Mr Manager, Keep Believing, Moonshine, Back Again

Customer Reviews:
Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02
I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

"MUCH BETTER THAN MOST THINK!".......2004-08-17
Simply put, good 80's Hard Rock! If you liked "Abominog", then you'll love this one too. In my opinion, they go together. Both have some killer tracks. For fans of the older stuff, this might be too different for you. I preffer the harder songs from UH but can still appreciate their earlier softer stuff. "The other side of midnight" is one of the best Hard Rock songs ever! That song alone makes this CD worth getting. Cool cover too! Pick it up and judge for yourself.
DID YOU ACTUALLY LISTEN TO IT??? IT'S GOOD!!!.......2004-08-13
The average idiot pops this album in and expects "Demons and Wizards". By 1983, Uriah Heep was vitrually a completely different band than that of the 70's. Only guitarist Mick Box can really be considered a "founding" member on "Head First". But the reality is, if you open your mind to the new sound which Uriah Heep had introduced on their "Abominog" album, you will discover that "Head First" is a damn fine album(despite the contrary whining of 70's Heep purists who never really even LISTENED to this album, they just assumed it was bad). "Head First" is a solid, well produced, early 80's hard rock/metal album, with spacy overtones. Peter Goalby's vocals are excellent, and the songs are easily as catchy as some of the best 70's Heep classics, just in a different way. I worship that which was early-70's Uriah Heep, but as I've grown older(as well as wiser and more open-minded) I've come to appreciate Heep's late-70's and early-80's efforts more and more. Box's guitarwork just kept improving, and while it was true Uriah Heep were not rehashing the classics, they were working much harder than the average band to bring their fans new, fresh, and quality, hard rock albums. Roll a joint, and take a dive "Head First" into this often ignored Heep classic!!!
Err..........2004-03-04
With the exception of "Abominog", the 1980s were unfortunately not a productive decade for Uriah Heep. This is the second-worst album of their career (which, even more unfortunately, was followed by their worst, "Equator"). Mick and the boys fall prey to all the worst tendencies of 80s cheese-rock here, and there's simply no excuse for covering a Bryan Adams song. Avoid this one.
This is not Uriah Heep..........2003-12-06
Uriah Heep was dead with the release of Wonderworld..."Head First" is an abomination
Radio, radio, we wanna radio airplay!!.......2002-12-27
IN this one, Heep gave up writing intelligent hard rock stuff and went for a final assault to America, writing cheesy lyrics and songs all the way. But this line up was so talented thateven this way a lot of the songs sounded good and hard.

Album Details
After Rising from the Ashes with 1982's Abominog Set, Uriah Heep Continued to Pursue a Similar Combination of Hard Rock Firepower and Aor Sleekness with Head First, the Bands Fifteenth Album. The Arrival of the `sequencer' Using a Backing Track of Pre-programmed Synthesized Pulses (An Effect which Dominated ZZ Top's Eliminator Album Two Years Later), Provided a Rich Accompaniment to Mick Box's High Flying Guitar Work and Lee Kerslake's Relentless Double-time Bass Drum Thumping and Enhanced the Album with a Sense of Energy, Complimenting Superbly the Even Balance of Power Chords and Pop Hooks in Tracks Like, `the Other Side of Midnight' and `weekend Warriors'. Like the Previous Years Abominog Album, Uriah Heep Had Delivered an Energetic and Well Crafted Slice of Aor Heaven. This Remastered Issue Contains Alternative Live Versions and an Extended Demo Track Entitled, `searching'.
