5 out of 5 stars "I weighed my life and it's got me old fool gold.".......2007-06-13

Although The Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine deservedly enjoy the accolades accompanying their respective positions as pioneers of the shoegazer genre pervasive in the late 1980s, the JMC's fellow Scots, Cocteau Twins, can be identified as a crucial component in the (semi-) popularisation of the style.

Following the departure of bassist and founding member Will Heggie, Head Over Heels relies almost exclusively on the Twins' two strongest suits: Robin Guthrie's often-abstruse guitar production, and Elizabeth Fraser's wraithlike vocals (which she lent most famously to the 1998 Massive Attack single 'Teardrop') and indiscernible lyrics.

The result is something of a synthesis of the trite precepts of punk, rock, dream pop and new wave combined to otherworldly effect. Although far removed from it's ominous predecessor Garlands (1982), Head Over Heels paradoxically both maintained the (considerable) critical and (modest) commercial appreciation the band had previously garnered, and signalled the dawning of a band honing their influential sound.

A central ambivalence in the album's sound is that although Fraser's iridescent vocals could pass as lullaby ('Sugar Hiccup'), Guthrie's coextensive opaque guitar layerings and vapourous arpeggios ('Glass Candle Grenades') are often their very antithesis. The variance works however, as the album sweeps effortlessly from would-be requiem (the dirge-like 'The Tinderbox (of a heart)' and would-be jazz ('Multifoiled') to would-be U2 ('My Love Paramour') and back again.

Indeed, Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and The Edge (U2) are as present in Guthrie's guitar as Will Reid and Kevin Shields (The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine respectively).

Fraser's voice is the central attraction however, with a transcendent quality that can be deciphered in the work of vocalists as diverse as Jeff Buckley (with whom she was romantically involved), Bjork, Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and Chino Moreno (Deftones).

3 out of 5 stars Okay. Bad remastering........2006-11-10

The songs on this album are good. Unfortuneatly, I learned that the remastering left something to be desired in the mid-range of most of the album. I do not own a copy of the original, however, I would purchase that instead.

5 out of 5 stars Leave Siouxie out of this!.......2006-08-20

Ignore the whiny naysayer that cried a river because the Cocteau Twins "weren't anything like Siouxie & The Banshees"...By the end of the CT's career they were better than they ever were, whilst S&TB were pop-encrusted shadows of their former selves and glory.

This is one of their top three albums (if not their best, competeing with the PINK OPAQUE and THE MOON & THE MELODIES). Still can't stand the track "Sugar Hiccup", though...definitely the least favourable on the album.

1 out of 5 stars I know it is 23 years old maybe that is why it stinks.......2006-06-22

I am always up for a change and a chance offering. When I heard that the "twins" were compared to Siouxsie and the Banshees, well I thought it deserved a hear-see. This is echo chamber crud. Voices that are incoherent and music that sounds as if play in a trash can (appropriate place to place this CD) Sorry, Siouxsie could expell better music and sounds through their intestinals track better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Head Over Heels - Remastered........2005-03-14

Most albums feature music which reveals the era in which they were recorded. But "Head Over Heels" by Scotland's Cocteau Twins doesn't sound like it belongs to ANY era, even though it was released in 1983. A beautiful rush of etheral magic, "Head Over Heels" stands in a class of its own. The slow-moving opener "When Mama Was Moth" has vocalist Liz Frazer delivering hypnotic (yet incoherent) chants, while the brooding "The Tinderbox (of a Heart)" marches along in all its dark glory. Things get upbeat in "In Our Angelhood" with great melange of guitars, and the single "Sugar Hiccup" holds up well. I've owned this CD since my days in college, and I like it more with each listen. The melodies these guys craft are some of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Mainstream listeners may not realize it, but the Cocteau Twins are among the most influential acts of the last 25 years, developing a unique and distinguished sound that would inspire later genres known as trip hop and ambient. Indie label 4AD re-released "Head Over Heels" with remastered sound supervised by Robin Guthrie. At first, I was reluctant to buy this CD, which, after all, was already reissued by Capitol in 1991. But the sound quality of the new 4AD release is a definite imporvement over the original, featuring a full-bodied sound that projects much better than Capitol's edition. So, even if you already have the Capitol release (or if you have no copy of "Head Over Heels" at all), you should make the upgrade and buy this great album reissued by 4AD.

4 out of 5 stars best so far`.......2006-04-23

this album, i thought was the best she put out, dont get me wrong i love paula's music and everyone laughs at me, im sure im not the only one. i just love the more grown-up sound it vibes out to us. if virgin records would or gave the album it's credit, there would be four or five top ten singles..my love is for real it's real fresh nothing out there now could put that song to the test..crazy cool i thought was outstanding if it was released at a remix if i were your girl absoulty would made a great single.. i really do think that everyone has this impression that paula bombed out for four years and never gave her the credit she should get, maybe if her fans put out a voice the album could be remixed and be re-released and put her back on the charts were she belongs

5 out of 5 stars Her Best :-().......2006-02-16

I do love every album of Paula's. I've been a fan of hers from the very start. But this is the best cd to me, because she's a little beyond the pop, and moved in a more funky direction here. The songs are amazing and really cool. If I Were Your Girl, My Love Is For Real and Crazy Cool are the best best songs here, but really they are all good. She has kept her unique voice throughout the years, but the music has progressed and if she was great at the start, - just imagine how excellent she is now. I really wish her new music (which has been promised) would take a front seat and she'd get on with recording a new cd for all her die-hard fans (especially if it's this kind of quality).

5 out of 5 stars Paula's best work.......2005-02-19

I guess you can't please everyone all the time. It seems that by the time this record dropped in 1995, Paula wasn't really welcomed back to the pop fold with open arms. And while clearly this is Paula's best work, from reading others reviews...most people thought her first two records were better than this.

I have to say that Paula began to continue what she started on "Spellbound". Creating a record that could not only produce radio ready singles, but also have album material that could hold its own next to the singles as well. Here, with "Head Over Heels" Paula accomplishes this.

The record literally pulsates with groove ready tracks. The funk play of "Crazy Cool" (which is even better in its single version) is slick, hip, & well...refreshing. The music on this record unlike her first two doesn't automatically date itself, which is why this record can be spun today & be seen as more than a nostalgia trip.

Songs such as the Middle Eastern tinged "My Love Is For Real" (possibly Paula's best single?) featuring vocals by the late Ofra Haza & the Motown pizazz of "Ain't Never Gonna give You Up" with an irresistable horn hook smoulder, & clearly outshine most of the pop songs on the radio today.

No, Paula isn't a diva like singer. But with each recording Paula's voice has gotten stronger, & her charisma shines through every song & she carries a tune very well.

Many fans complained that while there was good material here, there was far too much filler. For me, there were about only two tracks that could've been left off. That said the songs here are just simply better than most of the filler on her first two records, & with each spin the album tracks get better.

In short I recommend that if you are starting off as a Paula fan, this is a good record to start with. While (criminally) no longer in print, this is a record you can find in most second hand used music stores today, & I advise you to pick up probably one of the most underrated pop records of the 1990's.

5 out of 5 stars HEAD OVER HEELS...GREAT HIP-HOP-JAZZ-FUNK.......2004-03-03

Abdul never expected that her comeback as a judge in American Idol will revive her long hybernating famous status, indeed miss Abdul do knows what it is to be at top, and then flop, and get back on your feet, Paula's last effort in music is an impressive mature album that didn't got the attention it deserve mainly for two reasons, first: she got out of the music for far too much time(between Spellbound and Head...4 years), second: the face of music has change, POP had to survive been less POP more R&B, to compete against a more angry rock radio audience hypnotized by VH1's favorites like Morissette, Jewel, Merchant, etc. Paula didn't stick to the formula of those days, "the result a commercial flop", but not artisticaly, the proof is the leading single "My Love Is For Real" an exquisitte pop-r&b masterpiece, with such an enchanting sound, driven by an midestearn sound, and featuring world wide known singer Ofra Haza, this is a song that preceeded many songs like Sting "Desert Rose", the message of the song, and the sound of it, makes this a underrated song, that should get some attention because it sounds timeless, "Head Over Heels" begans with "Crazy Cool" the second single produced by the Family Stand, the funkadelic group that produced her previous album Spellbound, the beat constantly wins over the lyrics, a great tune that failed to reached the attention of the radiowaves, that enchantes with the ay ay ay chorus line, although the single version is better, the original version included here has it's worth the listen, "Ain't Never Gonna Give You Up" it's a song that it's old school driven with a lot of funkyness and jazz in it, totally danceable, although the songs stand up for great meaningful lyrics and great music, the inclution of Color Me Badd harmonized voices as an acompanion made this song sound a little bit dated, but still enjoyable, "Love Don't Come Easy" it's a latin flavored song, that tells a story about a latin girl in love, great dance, it reminds you a bit of 40's decade dance song, great production in this one, "If I Were Your Girl" melancolic, sexy song, written by "Wings" star "Crystal Benard", has great lyrics to it, but somehow the song got lost in monotony, although it's worth the listen, specially the part when Paula sings " I keep you up all night...(twice)..." delightful and mature, "Sexy Thoughts" although a favorite at the beginning when I bought this, time pass by, and it's the most dated-sound-alike in the whole album, but if you want to hear the good stuff, well is easy to dance with and amazing mixup vocals, "The Choice Is Yours" the most hiphop flavored song in the whole album produced by "Dallas Austin", intelligent lyrics, great beat, should've been a great single material by those years, "Ho-Down" one of the best songs of the album, funny lyrics, speed singing, Cab Calloway, 40's sounds with Hip Hop, great song....great to dance to(if u can). "Under The Influence" many say this is Paula's rendition to the Beatles 60's sounds, easy to swallow and easy to remember, so I guess they're alright..."I Never Knew It" well I never knew this song sounded so cheesy pop, but after all it works, silly-love song with a easy pop beat that carries the song to the end, "Get Your Groove On" disco-a-like song, mindless lyrics, great beat, a Paula-dance-alike song, great for an upbeat time, "Missing You"....I just love the way Abdul delivers the line "Casablanca and wild orchid I sent to you...." great vocals, one of Paula's best, amazing lyrics in a simple love song..."It's All About Feeling Good", it's an R&B-dance stomper, the title say it all, it's not a love song, it's just a song to feel good, "Cry For Me" well, I have always said that this is one of Abdul less likeable interpreation, but in time I have learned that this song has strong lyrics, and a sincere vocal deliver, if you got the chance to get the Japanese Import, you can get your hands on "Crazy Love" a typical fun Paula joint, infectuous and easy to follow song, great tune, "High School Crush" a story ballad, that not exactly portrait about what the title talks about, it's not a 30 yeard old singing about teenager love, it's about a mature woman singing to her long time lost hughschool crush who returns to her hometown and telling him that this time is not a joke, it's for real...great message, Head Over Heels it's an album that inspire you to dance, to love, and to forget each days problems, it's just an album that deserved better, great LP try it, you won't regret it....amazing album.....and waiting for the next Abdul album after 10 years....

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, Didn't Get The Credit It Deserved.......2004-02-19

This was a very good album that was underrated and didn't get the attention that it deserved because Virgin Records failed to promote it. The album is much better than Spellbound IMO. Paula worked with several producers on this album and it gave her a new, fresh sound. The first single, "My Love Is For Real," is probably one of the best songs on the album. Thick bass backed with a Middle Eastern groove makes this song unlike anything that had been done before in pop/R&B music. Unfortunately, the single didn't catch on and it didn't make the Top 20. My favorite song on the album "The Choice Is Yours," was produced by TLC producer Dallas Austin and the song definitely has a TLC feel to it. "Crazy Cool", "Ain't Never Gonna Give You Up," and "Love Don't Come Easy" are the other top songs on this album. As with just about all albums though, it does have some filler songs. "Missing You," "Sexy Thoughts," and "It's All About Feeling Good" are songs to skip over. But the album is definetly worth buying. I guarantee it's better than the pop and R&B music that you hear today.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Poco.......2006-09-04

Though a tad uneven at times, this album is probably one of the better examples of how versatile Poco could be. The acoustic "Keep on Tryin" features Poco's harmonic sound at its best and was one of the best songs bassist Tim Schmit contributed during his time in the band. "Makin Love" and "Georgia, Bind My Ties" highlight the band's ability to rock and their cover of the obscure Steely Dan song "Dallas" and "Lovin' Arms" pay homage to the band's country-rock roots. This album has some really great moments, but also a couple of weaker spots. All together it stands up as a very nice collection of music, even if it isn't up to the level of some of the other releases by the band during this period.

4 out of 5 stars Head Over Poco.......2006-07-06

This is one Poco's best CDs. The songs are dversified in that they cover country,
rock, and straight forward ballads. The mastering on the CD leaves a lot to be desired.
They should definitely remaster this one. The sound is somewhat low and muffled at
times. The mix boxes in the bass and percussion. Please remaster this one, it deserves it. The standouts are Keep On Tryin', Sittin' On A Fence, Flyng Solo, and I'll Be Back Again. This is a must for any avid Poco fan. Great CD des[pite the technical flaws.

Please keep the old stuff available - I don't even know in this modern day world of Lawyers and such if these Artists can even market their music anymore - hopefully the money goes to them, like it's supposed to!!!!

5 out of 5 stars PROBABLY THE NEXT BEST ALBUM BY POCO.......2005-08-29

I bought this album over a year ago in a record store in good condition that was originally released on ABC RECORDS, a label that sold out to MCA RECORDS. This is when pedal steel guitarist RUSTY YOUNG, makes his debut lead vocal (unless he actually sang on their previous albums) on the mandolin (played by RUSTY)/acoustic ballad US that also features the pipe organ, piano, and harmony vocal by bass guitarist TIM SCHMIT who wrote and sang the quiet acoustical ballad KEEP ON TRYIN'. Why RUSTY did not sing more songs that he wrote on this album and on the earlier POCO albums is a mystery to me because his song would have sound so much better; then again he might have too. Plus, I feel the more singers in a band, the better. The next song LOVIN' ARMS features excellent harmony vocals, drums, violin, banjo, acoustic, dobro, and pedal steel guitar playing. LET ME TURN BACK TO YOU that is written and sung by PAUL COTTON is a great song with his lead guitar playing and RUSTY'S mandolin and pedal steel guitar playing. MAKIN' LOVE is an excellent rock song with the harmony vocals, TIM'S bass guitar playing, GEORGE GRANTHAM'S drumming, PAUL'S guitar playing, RUSTY'S steel guitar playing, and THE BAND'S GARTH HUDSON playing the high-pitch piano, but SITTIN' ON A FENCE that features excellent harmony vocals, RUSTY'S steel guitar riffs, PAUL COTTON'S lead guitar riffs, GEORGE'S drumming, TIM'S bass guitar playing is better. Plus, the whatever type of percusion by VICTOR FELDMAN at the beginning of the song that comes after the excellent sounding bass guitar intro made me think is was either a CARIBBEAN or JAMAICAN song. PAUL'S DOWN BY THE RIVER is a good slow song with the orchestra, (a mellotron would have been better), harmony vocals, lead and pedal steel guitar riffs, and his guitar rockin' GEORGIA BIND MY TIES with the drum playing, bass guitar, harmony vocals, leslie steel and clean lead guitar riffs is excellent. TIM'S FLYIN' SOLO is good, but I do not understand why RUSTY does not play pedal steel guitar or anything on this song. The STEELY DAN written DALLAS that is sung by PAUL is excellent with the harmony vocals, the orchestra, the pedal steel guitar riffs, the drums, and the bass guitar. TIM'S I'LL BE BACK AGAIN is great with the harmony vocals, drums, guitar and bass guitar riffs, although RUSTY should have played more of the pedal steel guitar on this song too. Overall, this is definitely a must for all POCO FANS, especially all country lovin' music fans. More importantly, POCO had a whole lot more country sound to offer than THE EAGLES.

3 out of 5 stars mostly generic country-flavored '70s rock.......2005-06-11

1975's "Head Over Heels" from Poco sounds like a ready-made country-flavored rock album--the performances are ultra-professional and the songwriting is generally serviceable, but it's seriously lacking in excitement and inspiration. Timothy B. Schmit does get the album off to a very fine start with his melodious harmony-fest "Keep On Tryin'", backed only by an acoustic guitar--it really stands out in such a way that it sounds like it's supposed to be on a different album instead. Once that track passes, it's pretty much generic-ville for the rest of the album with track upon track making for respectable background music, but feeling underwritten. Rusty Young's "Makin' Love" and "Sittin' On A Fence" are a pair of startlingly similar-sounding songs, both of which are plastered with white-bread harmony vocals. Schmit co-wrote the bluesy "Flyin' Solo" which is quite good, but his other solo composition, the album-closing "I'll Be Back Again", is disappointingly dull. Paul Cotton's blues-rock styled "Georgia, Bind My Ties" has really bland verses with toothless vocals, though it does grab your attention with its minor-keyed catchiness and strong harmony vocals on the chorus. Cotton's "Down In the Quarter" does have some interesting stuff going on instrumentation-wise with the dreamy mix of vibes and chimes on the intro and some haunting orchestration. There's a cover of the obscure Steely Dan tune "Dallas" which is nicely done and has the catchy hooks missing from so much of the rest of the album. "Head Over Heels" really isn't a bad album at all, and with all but one of the tracks clocking in at under 4 minutes and several less than 3, things keep rolling along. But unless you like things as MOR as possible, you're going to be pretty plain-faced with this album.

Alex Bugnon displays a wide range of creativity through this interesting compilation. Although my favorite tracks are Elis, Head over wheels,. Earth interlude, Missing you and Winnie, I must agree the warmth, ferrous inspiration and denoted style that makes of this album one your favorite ones since the moment you listen it.

Alex Bugnon is the absolute shiznit, every cd has it's own flavor. His cd's are like lay's potato chips you can't buy just one.

3 out of 5 stars "Love Season" extended.......2002-07-10

"Head Over Heels" is very similar to Alex Bugnon's previous release, "Love Season." The album is a bit more jazzy than the R&B-infused "Season," and it has a gospel track at its end, "Human Epilogue." The distinctive Bugnon style is apparent on every track.

There's not as much to love here compared to the sublime "Love Season;" missteps include the title track and "Dance of the Ghosts," both of which try too hard to be funky and fail miserably. The musical gems "Elis," "Missing You," and "No Other Love" make up for the aforementioned bad tracks. Bugnon's uncle, famed trumpeter Donald Byrd, makes an appearance on the standout track "Winnie."

"Head Over Heels" is probably more essential for Bugnon fans than casual listeners. If you fall into the latter category, do yourself a favor and try "Love Season" first.

    5 out of 5 stars A Definite Must-Have for Alex Bugnon fans!.......2000-10-01

This 1990 release cemented Alex's rise to star status. Most of the artists who participated on this project went on to do their own solo projects including Keith Robinson and Vincent Henry. Favorite songs on this cd include the remake of "Any Love" by Luther Vandross featuring Marcus Miller. "Elis" featuring Vincent Henry on alto sax and "Missing You" a song that showcases Mr. Bugnon's keyboard mastery. "Head Over Heels" is guaranteed to keep your toes tapping and head nodding. I highly recommend this cd for fans of Alex Bugnon and smooth jazz in general.

    5 out of 5 stars Selmer Review.......2001-02-04

'Head over Heels' is the most consistent of the earlier Cocteau albums. The import version that includes the 'Sunburst and Snowblind' ep makes sense since they were both recorded during the same sessions. 'Sugar Hiccup' is reprised on the ep, but the three other tracks are the real reason to purchase it. To this day, it amazes me that 'From the Flagstones' and 'Hitherto' weren't included on the original album since they are far more melodic than some of that album's tracks. You can also find both tracks on the import album/compilation 'The Pink Opaque'.(See my review of that album) The final track, 'Because of Whirl Jack' is also a keeper. It is more akin to the almost punkish sounds and tempos of the tracks on their debut, 'Garlands', only again, far more melodic. 'Sunburst and Snowblind' can also be purchased as a part of the limited edition box set that contains all of their ep's. (Essential if you are a diehard) But released in this form as companions, 'Head over Heels/Sunburst and Snowblind' is a "treasure". Similar Artists: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Area, Dead Can Dance.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Cocteau Twins album.......2003-08-07

When I first heard this album I was 19 years old working as an import buyer for Tower records in Portland, Oregon, I am now 39. And after 20 years there still hasn't been a record like it. The year this album came out Michael Jackson's Thriller album was on it's way to becoming the greatest selling album of all time. My main contact at an import distributor company told me of a new album called "Head Over Heels", by a group called Cocteau Twins that was getting rave reviews in Europe. For me personally I was sick to death of the music that was popular at the time and I decided to buy two copies, one for the store and one for me. When I took it home and listened to it I knew I was listening to a kind of music that had never been made before. After doing research, I discovered that this was actually their third recording, after "Garlands", and "Sunburst and Snowblind" and bought copies for me and the store of these records as well, and after this I became their biggest fan. I also found out that it was two 20 year old people, named Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie responsible for all that you hear. Ladies and Gentlemen, this record is a masterpiece. "Head Over Heels" is tied with "Victorialand" as my favorite Cocteau Twins record, but it is my favorite album of all time. From the incredible opening of "When Mama Was Moth", to the orgasmic ending of "Musette and Drums", this album is the best album ever made, in my opinion. Let me review my five favorite songs off of "Head Over Heels". 1)"Musette and Drums". It was after hearing this song for the first time, that I became their greatest fan. It was and still is my favorite song of all time. The last two minutes of this song is the greatest piece of music ever recorded. And understand that everything you are listening to is made by two people. This song is incredible. And after it is over, play it again. 2)"My Love Paramour". The sexiest, and most erotic song they have ever done. Pure genius. 3)"In Our Angelhood". Pure Rock and Roll, Cocteau Twins style. 4)"In The Gold Dust Rush". Angelic and beautiful. There is a part of this song that sounds likes an airplane is about to crash, it is actually the music spinning. Listen to it loud, and you will hear what I mean. Incredible production. 5)"The Tinderbox(of a Heart)". This song makes me feel like I am out looking at the ocean watching the tide roll in. I have this album to thank to having an open mind to listening to music. I learned to have patience and tolerance of all kinds of things because of this record. I rate this album the greatest along with the group that created it.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-06-16

Few words can ever describe that magic that the Cocteau's put down on record and this only continues that. It's not as harsh or a little frightening as Garlands but it makes for great listening. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Genuine soul - beautiful and eerie soundscapes.......2003-04-08

"Head Over Heels" was the second album from Scottish group The Cocteau Twins and marked the beginning of their trademark ethereal "dream-pop" sound. However, to some degree at least, the sound was less atmospheric and more rhythmic than on later releases, especially on the techno-ish "The Tinderbox (Of A Heart)."

Liz Fraser's hymnal vocal style was already at the forefront here, though it is more comprehensible than on their fabled "Victorialand". On the opener "When Mama Was Moth", Fraser's voice was low-key and Guthrie's electronics backed by an oboe took us through a slow, gothic, soundscape, but on the beautiful "Five Ten Fiftyfold", Fraser's voice came into the forefront and her soul-like harmonies and wonderful embellishments to the acoustic guitars. "Five Ten Fiftyfold"'s beautifully spare saxophone just shows the listener how this band could keep continuity with itself on "Victorialand" (compare "Lazy Calm").

"Sugar Hiccup" was a continuation of this, but Fraser's magical singing was even better, whilst the brilliant "In Our Angelhood", with its danceable rhythm, was a highlight of the album, and was the almost-exuberant "In The Gold Dust Rush", and the haunting "Multifoiled". "My Love Paramour" showed Fraser's voice take on a new dimension from traditional folk and soul spirituals with her glossolalial tone in the intro of the song, whilst "Musette and Drums" was the rocking closer that most subsequent Cocteau albums were to have.

An acquired taste like all feminine music, but an essential Cocteau Twins album.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect Music.......2003-02-09

the Cocteau Twins continue making their beautiful music with "Head Over Heels." I can't even pick a favorite track because I love all of them. The songs vary from dreamy (Sugar Hiccup), to eerie (Five Ten Fifty Fold), to even kinda darkly jazzy (Multifoiled). If you liked "Treasure," you'll love "Head over Heels" and you should own it.

    5 out of 5 stars Unrestrained Beauty........2002-10-27

Press "play" and allow the Cocteaus to take you to another world.
