Album Description

The debut album from Cut Chemist, formerly of pioneering underground hip-hop group Jurassic 5, The Audience's Listening is evocative of an era when sound enthusiasts put out records for the adventure of it, not as a vehicle tied to hit singles and booty-shaking videos. Using a turntable, mixer and computer to create the songs, this gifted DJ has conjured an homage to what is possible. Varied, uplifting and unexpected, rooted in hip-hop but leaping into new sonic territory, The Audience's Listening offers musical magic created by the alchemist known as Cut Chemist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent album!.......2007-07-03

I only heard one cut (The Garden) from this album, and only heard it 3 times over the course of about 2 months. Outstanding tune, but I wanted to hear more.

FINALLY the DJ actually said who the artist was, and I bought the album immediately! This was a good decision on my part!

It is an intellegent composition, one that will not yield hits on the radio, but is brilliantly crafted. It requires actually listening to it several times to get into it, but the "effort" is worth it! And you won't get sick of hearing it on the radio every hour like so many albums!

If you have any interest at all in DJ compositions, this one is a must have!

4 out of 5 stars fine turntablism.......2006-11-22

i think the people that bash this album or are dissapointed by it are the ones that expected too much of the album. and that's not the album's fault, that's their own.
let me tell you, i first heard this album performed live by the cut chemist himself. and it got me shakin', same with the whole audience. so if u get a chance to, go see it live... it was awsome.
so therefore i decided to pick up the album on vinyl and compact disc.
its a good album, especially if u like a mix of hip hop, funk and jazz. Djs should respect it because the turntablism aspect of the album is up to par, nothing new or totaly mind blowing, but creative nontheless. if this is your first album listening to cut chemist, its a good one, and i think even for the cut chemist fans, its apreciable work. its fun, creative, and gets you moving. i thought however there lacked a bit of energy from the MC on the track 'whats the altitude' on the CD. however, live, he rocked it.
its a short album, but its fun, and its short enough not to be too redundant, long enough to enjoy.
get a copy, its not a let down... if youre looking for something completely mind blowing, maybe this isnt your pick, but thats why i didnt put five stars. fine album all the way through.

4 out of 5 stars The robots... are coming..........2006-08-28

Sometimes albums are made with groundbreaking new twists and sounds. Sometimes they are made for financial gain, via radio hits and MTV coverage. And then there are some that are really just made for the love of it.

Cut Chemist's "The Audience's Listening" appears to be one of the third category, though the turntablist/DJ/Jurassic 5-er does give electronica and hip-hop some novel twists in his first fully original album. But at the heart of it, it sounds like Chemist is simply dabbling in whatever he enjoys most.

"Start remembering what you hear," says a cheerful interviewer, before a patchwork of samples inform us about the DJs of the future, about music, the first annual DJ convention, and a lot of dogs barking. By the time you're finished with the intro, your brain will be in the right state for what comes next. ("People get ready... the robots are coming!")

He retreads familiar ground in the energetic percussion-heavy "My 1st Big Break," before switching over to a new sound -- bossa nova. Gypsyish guitar playing an energetic live tune, with a sample of Astrud Gilberto playing softly halfway through. It's an exquisite, ethereal tune that shows that Cut Chemist can do all sorts of music.

Lest anyone think that Cut Chemist has lost his edge, he dabbles in some truly weird stuff (a phone conversation done entirely with samples and scratches), sharply surreal hip-hop, and shimmering electronic numbers that sound like an arty sci-fi film. Cut Chemist dips back into bossa nova once before, before finishing up with the dense, catchy hip-hop of "The Audience Is Listening Theme Song."

Cut Chemist has done some pretty brilliant work with remixes and the "Brainfreeze" collaboration with DJ Shadow, so expectations were high for "The Audience's Listening." But the best way to listen is without expectations -- while it's neither groundbreaking nor brilliant, it is a beautiful, funky little album.

One thing it has from the beginning is a relaxed, laid-back feeling feeling. Cut Chemist shows that he can do everything from spare acoustics to dense, intense melodies, dabbling in a little of everything at least twice, and trying new sounds without trying anything too new.

It's not groundbreaking, but from the sound of it, Cut Chemist was just trying out whatever existing sounds he liked rather than striving for something new. The basic melodies are loaded with extra sound: lots of vinyl scratches, odd samples (glass breaking? dogs?), razor-sharp hip-hop beats, and everything from a cowbell to gypsyish guitar to waves of smooth synth.

Hymnal and Thes One make rather surreal cameos on a pair of songs, while Edan and Mr. Lif appear on the frenetic hip-hop "Storm," blurting out a breathless rap that gets stranger with every word.

Cut Chemist may not have broken new ground with "The Audience's Listening," but the result is still a fun, weird, and thoroughly likable album. Definitely worth a listen.

4 out of 5 stars four songs you'll love..........2006-08-25

and the others are good, too. I'm particularly fond of "Spat", which rolls nicely into "What's the altitude". Spoon has a great groove, too. "The Garden" seems to be the song that gets radio air-time around here, so you'll recognize and dig the track.

5 out of 5 stars Cut Chemist.........2006-07-28

As a turntable enthusiast, I can really respect what Cut Chemist does on this album. He really is just having fun with things, with a variety of beats and great samples. One track in particular he simulates a phone conversation with scratching, which blows my mind. Great album.

Pioneers of the London acid jazz scene, the Brand New Heavies translated their love for the funk grooves of the 1970s into a sophisticated sound that carried the torch for classic soul in an era dominated by Hip Hop. Formed in 1985 by drummer/keyboardist Jan Kincaid, guitarist Simon Bartholomew, and bassist/keyboardist Andrew Levy -- longtime school friends from the London suburb of Ealing -- the BNH were originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the rare groove scene in vogue at the moment. World renowned innovator and trendsetter in the turntable world, Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5 steps forward on "The Litmus Test", bringing his unique brand of mixing to an impressive playlist of rare remixes and unreleased tracks. Not to be slept on...

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars stellar remixes (but, yes, sadly overpriced).......2006-11-25

I have to agree with the consensus here: these are absolutely first-rate remixes, showing Cut Chemist at the pinnacle of his powers. However, charging $18 for an EP is the reason many people are stealing music.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but too short.......2005-11-27

When I saw this in a local record store and read the total run time on the back as 28 minutes, I assumed it was an EP of a full album. I figured that I'd buy the full album from amazon. When I got my amazon order, I found out that it was the same EP...at full album price. They really should mark this as an EP as it's only 28 minutes long.

That said, it's a really great 28 minutes that I didn't regret paying the $15 for, but I would've liked it better had I bought it at the local used store for $10.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional......(But oh, so teasingly brief!!!).......2005-03-30

If (like me), you like to listen to some expertly (and deftly chosen) tracks, that have all been sublimely mixed, by some of the finest turntablists out there. One name that should feature on any list should be "Cut Chemist's"....this is a man that although his studio record output is hardly prolific, virtually everything he does put out, is usually of the highest quality. Preferring to concentrate on a broad selection of Old School Hip-Hop, Funk, Rare groove, Instrumental breaks and Rap on his albums. Not only have has he (& Dj Nu-mark) been the beat driving force behind "Jurassic 5", but both are arguably amongst the finest turntablists ever. But for this release, its a 28 min EP, that acts as a prelude for Cut Chemist's forthcoming LP (of yet there appears to be no specific date). For the price being charged for this EP (Which isn't far off the price for a full length CD), is this worth the price outlay??? Well, nobody is going to accuse Cut Chemist of rushing out a poorly devised and mixed EP, as this is a near flawless compilation of unreleased tracks, coupled with a choice selection of remixes of some of the work by the Jurassic 5 Crew (a excellent mix of Rap & Instrumental tracks). Although before the criticisms start flying around, These tracks are not your average remixes. Cut Chemist has obviously put a lot of time & thought into how the mix should sound different from every other Mix album out there, but more impressive is his attention to detail & meticulous fine tuning, until everything sounds just right. And as expected, the mix isn't just purely geared towards Hip-Hop. Cut Chemist's love of Old School Funk & Rare Groove feature throughout (obviously not heavily, as the mix is only 28mins), but a keen ear for Groove and melody, as well as cutting up dialogue, have always earmarked Cut Chemist's mixes, above the usual cut & paste mix albums doing the rounds. A lot of these tracks will be familiar to those that listen to mix albums, or more specially like Cut Chemists work with Jurassic 5. Jurassic 5 Tracks such as "Quality Control", "Jayou", "Thin Line", "Contact", "Swing Set", "Lesson 6" & "Swing Set"...all crop up throughout the mix. And although the set leans towards a sort of remixed compilation of Jurassic 5 / Cut Chemist material, it's the way that Cut Chemist's ability to take previously heard material, and reinvent (or reinterpret) it in such a way, that although not sounding completely new, is a wonderful spin on an existing sound. Obviously the Jurassic material is interspersed with various other tracks (such as a sublime mix of "Gang Starr's - Eye on the Gold Chain"), to prevent this from being overly familiar. But such is the precise and skillful mixing / turntable dynamics on display here, that Cut Chemist rarely has to fall back on turntable trickery to impress. Sure, elements of scratching, beat matching, and sampling are in evidence, but their use is relatively subtle in comparison to similarly styled mix albums. And whatever some peoples misgivings may be with the large amount of existing material used here, few can deny that, Cut Chemists use of sound Collages, beat placement and profound knowledge of what makes a fantastic mix album, arguably makes for an equally sensational recording. And it's all done with such a a tangible playfulness, in its approach, with a knowing nod to the power of the old school DJ, that if the forthcoming LP, can maintain this remarkable standard, it'll rank amongst some of the finest work that Cut Chemist has ever recorded (and that's no mean feat). But the main point of criticism for this release, isn't the material, or the mixing...(both are exceptional), but the fact that this is only 28mins!!???.....now I'm not going to lie to you, when I was listening to this, I found myself getting more & more into it, mentally patting myself on the back for buying this CD. Thinking how amazing this CD was, and how It just couldn't get any better.......and then the CD finished, and I was "Whaaaa the F>>>k!!??, Refund???". (I'm joking about the Refund Bit), but it's true, It really does finish, when you become completely absorbed in it. There can be no doubt that most people will want to run out and buy the (hopefully Substainally longer) LP, when It finally arrives. But what you want to know is "Is this EP worth the cost??".....weeeeell, if your like me, and you consider having to (sometimes) pay over the odds for fantastic music, part & parcel of being a music enthusiast, then you'll find the high asking price easier to shallow. But if price is a consideration here, then I'd have to say to 'Hunt around', and see if you can get it a bit cheaper, as it truly is a remarkable EP, and bodes incredibly well for the fully length. And there's nothing to say that the mix on this EP, is going to feature on the full length. Without seeming like a 'Cop-Out' I'd say, if your a big Cut Chemist fan, then this is worth the money, those that can wait for the Full-length, or just only have a passing interest in Cut Chemist's work should pass. I'm giving the album 5 Stars for the music (which, for me), is what it's really about...if price is a consideration for you, when buying music, then knock a star off the rating.

4 out of 5 stars Great EP, ditto other reviewers.......2005-03-08

Let me just say that I *wish* I had purchased this from Amazon. It's overpriced for an EP at $18, but I paid $25 at Tower before I saw it here. That's almost $1/minute. Eeesh.

4 out of 5 stars great remixes, but ridiculously overpriced.......2004-09-15

I'd just like to echo the sentiments of the reviewer below: 18 bucks is far too much to pay for mere 28 minutes of music, especially when it contains no new tracks. This is still a great CD though (would you expect anything less from Cut?), and I'm looking forward to his full-length release. I just hope that the next CD is a little more reasonably priced.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the underwear.......2006-08-13

My first live Incubus experience came in 2004 when they were out promoting A Crow Left Of The Murder. Incubus has always been my personal favorite band and to see them live and see all the energy they put forth in their performance was something I'll never be able to describe. Such is the case with their 2003 show at Lollapalooza. Of all the bootlegs released (all 4), Live At Lollapalooza 2003 is by far the most straight forward. With 13 tracks and crowd participation kept to a minimum (something that bewilders me still), this plays more as an official live recording than a bootleg. Nevertheless, if you like Incubus at all, you're sure to enjoy this effort.

The song selection is great for a casual fan, and for us diehards, hearing Nebula is reason enough to buy this. Warning seems to me a bit awkward of an opener but serves it's purpose well, other than that, the order seems pretty good, probably would've rather had Are You In? as the last song though. Vitamin deserves some special mention merely because of the out-of-left-field cover of Lionel Richie's Hello, which is played excellent.

I've come to the conclusion that Brandon has two live voices. The first one is the all out, adrenaline laced voice, the one I'm sure everyone prefers. But he also displays a more lazy type of voice sometimes in which he'll just speak the lyrics at times instead of actually singing them. Thankfully though, the latter doesn't seem to happen too terribly often, and not at all on here. As for the rest of the band, top notch as always. No real technical problems seem to plague them, and Kilmore is a fairly pivotal role in this show (finally!) with the great rendition of Battlestar.

I won't say which songs I like best because Incubus performs them all so well, instead I'll say that for the price and with the profits going to a good cause, it's an excellent investment for collectors and listeners alike.

Oh, and since it's not listed, here's the tracklisting:

      Warning
      Nice To Know You
      Make Yourself
      The Warmth
      Stellar

      5 out of 5 stars Incubus is a 5 star band!.......2004-08-19

I'm just looking out for you guys... Why is it out of stock? Because it's sold exclusively at the incubusbootlegs website. It's right under 10 bucks there brand new, and proceeds go toward the Make Yourself Foundation. You shouldn't pay more than what the band would sell it for.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album from a great live band........2004-03-14

Live At Lollapalooza 2003 includes live tracks from S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself and Morning View as well as one track from A Crow Left Of The Murder, and a couple never-before-recorded covers including Lionel Richie's "Hello" (at the end of "Vitmain") and Shudder To Think's "X-French Tee Shirt." Also featured are guest performances from DJ Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark from Jurassic 5.

This is one of the best live albums I have heard. So many bands sound great on record, and when you see the show, they are so bad that you're forced to question whether you're even watching the same band. Incubus, however, has the talent to faithfully reproduce their studio recordings on stage. The sound quality is pristine. When they drop the audience mics, you would think they were in a recording studio. Brandon is in great voice, and Mike's playing is so skilled and versatile I found myself wondering why he doesn't get more solos on the albums.

The only complaint I would have is that they don't list which songs came from which shows in the liner notes. Some fans may be disappointed that there is no pre-S.C.I.E.N.C.E. material on this disc, but overall Live at Lollapalooza is a great live overview of a great live band.

        Amazon.com's Best of 1998

In a year in which DJs asserted that, yes, they too are musicians, it was the duo of Cut Chemist (a turntablist in Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli) and Shortkut (a member, along with DJ Qbert and Mix Master Mike, of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz), spinning live at a San Francisco party that put the proof in the pudding. Mixing albums from across the decades, some familiar and some obscure, the duo create something entirely--and undeniably--their own. --Randy Silver

        Amazon.com

In the beginning, hip-hop was all about the DJ. The DJ rocked the party, keeping the flow going, and to help raise the level of excitement, he--and, back then, it was always he--might employ an MC to shout some catch phrases over the music. But for hip-hop to become pop and rock & roll, a frontman was needed, and the MC became dominant. Not so anymore, as an underground school of self-styled turntablists--DJs with a fancy name for themselves--eschew the MCs and rock the party themselves. Recorded live at San Francisco's Future Primitive Soundsession party, DJs Shortkut (one of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, along with Mix Master Mike) and Cut Chemist (of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli) let loose on this disc: two DJs, five turntables, 70 minutes, and no overdubs. It's an astounding display both of their own technical skills and of their ability to keep a party grooving; it's amazingly danceable but punctuated with moments of jaw-dropping virtuosity. May the party never end. --Randy Silver

        Album Description

This is the one that started it all! The first officially released recordings from the legendary Future Primitive sessions in San Francisco, which later gave birth to 'Brainfreeze' & everything that followed. Here Cut Chemist battles Shortkut in a ferocious non-stop attack of vintage 45 funk, hip hop classics & undiscovered breaks, beats & dialogue (much of which was later to find it's way onto Jurassic 5's early releases via Cut's production, particularly in the monumental 'Lesson 5'). This is a landmark recording in the history of turntablism. 70 minutes, 23 tracks.

Unless you are really into turntablism and samples, don't bother with this album. This album is best for DJ's and music nerds.

I found it a little boring.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet son of a bee sting..........2005-08-11

A truly amazing cd. I have a hip-hop/ turntablism/ soulful jazz/ deep house/ downtempo/ weird foreign stuff radio show and this is my favorite cd. I just start giggling like a little girl when I hear their eclectic selections. They don't let up through this whole cd and other than Q-Bert these guys have some of the best samples around. Hell, I just finished listening to it, straight through and I've had it for years. Worth the price of admission.

        5 out of 5 stars Yup, I was fooled........2003-10-09

This set sounded so perfect that I figured it HAD to be rehearsed. The transitions are too smooth, the mixes too perfect, the skratchin' too ill. But according to another reviewer, these two had never worked together, or even MET, prior to this encounter. That makes it all the sweeter. It's one of the best examples out there of just what DJs can do. Seventy minutes of nonstop scratching, ingenious samples, and unbeatable party beats-- this is the album I always reach for when I'm trying to convince unbelievers of the power of the DJ. And more often than not, they're sold on the idea.

With a little more lift and a little more thrust on the marketing side, this series could have taken off in a big way. As it is, we've got two incredible albums of hip-hop goodness that're going to age incredibly well, no question about it. If you don't have them already, what the hell are you waiting for?

5 out of 5 stars Speechless... after witnessing the birth of a new art form!.......2002-04-03

Okay, everybody, I was skeptical when this CD was put in my hand. I grew up listening to old school rap (Run-DMC, the Beasties, LL,) and thought that DJ-ing was just a beat for the MCs. Then, of course, I was disgusted by Puffy and all that "sampling" of the 90s. I thought to myself before I put this CD on: "Well, this can't possibly be art, or even innovative or interesting. I mean, all the guys are doing is mixing other people's music, just like Puffy... and that stuff was so WEAK."

Let me just say: I was never more wrong.

This CD is a work of genius. I can't believe I am saying that, but truth is truth.

True, these guys are taking music other people made, but they are putting it together in totally new ways. As one reviewer said before-- and he was right on the money-- this is a new form of art much like Jazz. They are using other music as their paint, but making totally new canvasses with it. And, it is listenable, not just academic! This CD is both humbling and inspiring.

        Words fail me.

        Why?

Because my jaw is still dragging on the floor!!

4 out of 5 stars strictly for scratch addicts.......2002-02-17

I was at the 'Bronx To Brixton' event at the Brixton Academy sometime in 98, when some little American dude who had a stall set up pressed this CD on me. [...]. I somehow managed not to lose it that night, took it home, fired up a zoobie and slapped it on. And?...let me first say this is the probably the most innovative mix CD I've ever heard. Chemist and Shortkut throw together such an amazingly diverse mixture of obscure samples, bizzare skits and classic tracks that it's impossible not to be blown away initially. Featuring instrumentals from the likes of Group Home, J5, Beatnuts, KRS, and some cool stuff I've never heard before, this would be the ultimate mix album were it not for one glaring downside...THERE'S TOO MUCH [...] SCRATCHING!.It does not let up ONCE during the entire 70 mins. It gets to the point where you wish they'd give it a rest just so you can enjoy the fantastic tracks they're scratching over. Don't get me wrong, I love scratching, but when you hear it continously for 70 mins you just want to scream and kick your stereo. If Chemist and Shortkut can somehow curb their scratch tendencies, I'd definately buy something else by them, but this is strictly for scratch addicts.

This is old-school DJ Shadow taking on a long DJ set. The flavor of Cut-Chemist is in there too. The mixing is flawless and the production is top-notch. I don't know why this was never released in the States, but if you can find it, GET IT!

This is my favorite ever! The samples are so classic taking me back to being a young pup, bridging synaptic gaps that lay open for decades. The 'Cooking with Gas' commercial samples and the Coca-Cola samples were a great ride back to the seventies. BUT this is not a 70's hits mix of any sort. GET IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!

Cut chemist lays out his breaks on this one. One of my favorite breaks albums. So much soul. Cuttin' Class is a shorter, even more rare version of this double CD. Rare Equations is still around in the corners of the web's online stores. Dig deep, you might be surprised. Good luck.

Cut Chemist maybe be largely known for his work with Golden age Hip-Hop collective "Jurassic 5", but those that have probed a bit further to know more about the unassuming looking man, will be fully aware that he is not only one of the most gifted 'Turntablists' of his generation, but also incredibly knowledgable, when it comes to music that touches upon: Hip-Hop, Funk, Rare Groove, Soul, Funky & instrumental breaks & Beats, with such a deep understanding (and Record Collection) that few some better poised to put together a mix album featuring such material, and it's probably not a massive understatement to say that, such is the exceptionally high quality of his studio albums, that you can pretty much buy anything with his name on it, and it'll be another impeccably turned out effort.

Unsurprisingly, This (relatively) rare Double Cd mix is almost purely focused on delivering a deftly selected, sequenced and (of course) mixed Cd, that largely ignores Hip-Hop completely, and is more in tune with the funky breaks and obscure funk of his "DJ Shadow" Collaborated sublime "Brainfreeze" mix album, and so works more as a compilation of segued-together cuts rather than a stand-alone work itself, and as such remains an amazing display of spontaneous music-making, but with this solo effort Cut Chemist is free to concentrate on his love of Rare Groove, obscure funk & instrumental breaks, and as seems to be the case with Shadow/Cut Chemist mix albums, that seem to surface, is that there is nothing in the way of a tracklisting to identify particular favourtie tracks, with Cut Chemist choosing to largely mix funk rarities...(although choice cuts from James Brown occasionally surface, and there is a truly fantastic instrumental cover version of "Dusty Springfield's - Son of a Preacher man"), but, on the whole, the material here is more than likely extremely rare and generally forgotten 45s that will be unfamiliar to all but the most ardent beat-diggers.

Something to also being in mind is that the tempo for this mix is far more downtempo than what you might be expecting. There's very little in the way of furious Exuberant breaks here, instead the mood is far more subtle, focusing on remarkably good-natured rhythms & complex beats, rather than over the top theatrical Funk. Cut Chemist rarely scratches, or brings any DJ tricks to the table on this mix, it's almost purely designed for a listener experience and there is no-showboating here, just impeccably mixed tracks that aren't here to show trainspotting oneupsmanship, but rather show that mix albums needn't be a case of B-Boy skills. Cut Chemist instead places less emphasis on obscure novelties for a more cohesive and better-sequenced listening experience, and that's without relying on Hip-Hop tracks to pad out the mix (although on occasion Cut Chemist does trick the listener into think that a Hip-Hop track is about to be introduced, by using sampled dialogue, from several Hip-Hop artists), even managing to end the second disk with several minutes of live recording from U.K. Hip-Hop DJ 'Tim Westwood's' Radio Show.

Although almost certainly one of Cut Chemists lesser known albums, and yet it is arguably one of his finest..(I have: "Brianfreeze", "Product Placement", "Live and the Variety Arts Center, the Litmus Test, Live at the Future Primitive Soundsession"), although I won't say that one album is necessary 'Better' than another album (the very different dynamics of the different albums is hard to judge against each other), I will say that this is probably the one that I stick on most frequently, as it's possibly the more accessible of his albums, and is more suited to a broader audience, as opposed to some of the more niche appeal of something like 'Product Placement' (I'm not saying it's better, just equally worthwhile & different). And Cut Chemists unquestionable, peerless ability & uncanny knack for finding old tracks that appeal to anyone bear witness on a (Double) album that is truly stunning on every level (mixing, Track Selection, sequencing, pacing....hell, it even has a (small) sense of humour). And is such a thigh-slappingly brilliant album, that if you like Cut Chemist (even a passing interest) or especially like those Funk/Rare groove compilations that bypass mainstream tracks for undiscovered gems (the "BBE" Barely Breaking Label, for instance), this is without a doubt a absolute must buy (Even if you have to pay a little more for it than you usually do for your albums to get this), and truly is considered essential to anyone with a eclectic record collection.
