No stranger to the realm of children's records, They Might Be Giants have seen success with their CD No! and the book-and-CD combo Bed, Bed, Bed. Their latest CD, Here Come the ABCs, offers up 25 alphabetically themed songs. However, as is their charming way, the two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell), use the letters as merely the connective tissue, allowing them to pursuit intriguing flights of fancy that consider everything from the relative power of letters and sounds to animal hijinks. Just as they've always done, there are wistful ballads and high octane rockers. TMBG have always been a family-friendly band, and this disc works just fine for adult fans, who can rightfully consider this simply their newest release. --David Greenberger

Fun for Kids and their Grown-ups!.......2007-06-10
I bought "Here Come the ABC's" for a friend for her birthday after she watched it with my son. She adores the set. They Might Be Giants performs wonderfully catchy songs that are both easy to remember and challenge thinking. My son, who is 2, enjoys the puppets and the vivid and sometimes strange animation sequences. Favorite songs in our household include "Alphabet of Nations" (me), "E Eats Everything" (my son), and "Alphabet Lost and Found" (my husband). This set is one that I would recommend to anyone who interacts with young children learning to play with language. It grabs their attention, and they don't mind at all.

My son has been watching this DVD since he was about 9 months old. He is over a year old now and loves it even more than when we first got it. Its also the only dvd he has that i don't get sick of watching over and over. I can't wait for here come the 123's

FYI, it is a very loud DVD so do not have the volume up too loud. My 2-year-old and I both love this DVD. He sings the songs and is learning to recognize his ABC's. What a fun way to learn. We use the CD in the car and when he is in the bathtub with his floating letters. He is learning to go to the "QU" letters when he hears them in the song. Great Job!
Fun for kids and adults.......2007-04-15
I purchased this CD/DVD combo based on a recommendation in Family Fun Magazine. I have not been disappointed! It is full of catchy songs that my whole family enjoys. This is not another mind-numbing kids CD. Both my husband and I find ourselves singing along with our sons when we play this CD in the van. Well done!

The real arms around me just faded........2006-07-27
Let me first state that I am a Smiths fan in every sense of the word. I wore my Queen Is Dead shirt to school picture day, for God's sake! But this is my honestly analytical opinion on "Strangeways, Here We Come".
The person who got me into The Smiths was my dad, British junkie that he is, and when he found this CD buried in a little indie record store, he was overjoyed and mystified, saying that he'd completely forgotten about this album (hmmm, now what does that tell us). So, I copied it and commenced listening.
1. A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours
Probably the best song on the album, actually. With a mock-ghostly, dramatic beginning, blossoming into a catchy and (I wince to use this word, but I must) bouncy vocal preformance. 5/5 stars
2. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
This song is either about homosexual rape or something beyond the realms of my understanding. And what's with the gutteral growling Morrissey's been toying with? This song actually has a really good beat. 3/5
3. Death of a Disco Dancer
This is an example of what came out of Morrissey's mind late one night after downing just a few too many. A strangely artificial beginning, dry lyrics, not my favorite song on the album. 3/5
4. Girlfriend In A Coma
This one I like, despite the very un-Smiths-like sound to it. Morrissey's characteristically grim humor abounds, if looking through another person's eyes (do you really think he has a GIRLfriend?). 4/5
5. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
A good title, if nothing else! But also a good vocal, good lyrics (when are they not?). But Moz, who is the "shy, bald Buddhist"? 4/5
6. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
This song made me cry the first time I heard it, but through my tears I couldn't help but wonder who the people were, screaming in apparent agony in the backround. Oh, but I love this song. "Last night I felt real arms around me. No hope, no harm, just another false alarm." How true. 5/5
7. Unhappy Birthday
Hilarious like a sledgehammer on your head! With a mock-cocky rhythm, and cheerfully hateful lyrics, I can't help liking this. 4/5
8. Paint A Vulgar Picture
A pretty good idea lyrically, but they carry it on a bit too long. A strong dosage of reality, but not done particularly well, I must say. Except for the "dance my legs down to the knees" bit. 3/5
9. Death At One's Elbow
Oh, Morrissey and Marr, WHY? It's upbeat to the point of painful, the lyrics make little sense, and dear God was that a tambourine??? Goodbye my love indeed. 1/5
10. I Won't Share You
In my father's words, "beautiful". Well, he was never much for analyzing, but indeed it is. An acoustic is always a good way to end an album. Written for Marr, possibly? 5/5
There you are. Rate me, hate me, bless me, help me (wait, who am I talking to) keep scrolling down your computer screen, I don't care. My overall take on Strangeways, Here We Come is 4/5 stars. Cheers.
Worst Smiths Album Ever........2006-06-01
I think the only way you could really consider this a good album is if you are working BACKWARDS through their catalog. I remember as a teenager going to the record store and snatching up all the 12" singles they would release every other month it seemed back in 1984 and 1985. Each one was a gem, musical brilliance. Meat Is Murder is one of the finest pieces of British rock music produced, if not THE best in the 80's. Were it not for a few duds, I would say the same for The Queen is Dead. These are albums that to this day have not been matched in lyrical genius and musical expression.
Then you have this album. Now, I was quite a rabid fan back in the day - until I bought this album. I tried very very hard to like this album. But the dreadful, overproduced music coupled with Morrissey's obvious creative block made for some bad listening. I am thinking right now of the lyrics to "Stop Me.." and how bad they are. They actually make me cringe. Does repeating phrases 3 times in a row, 4 times in a song, compare to "Rusholme Ruffians"?
Like I said, if you are working backwards throught their catalog, you might think of this as a good album. But when I heard it, I knew it was over. I think this could only appeal to fans of Morrisseys solo stuff, which I really really can't stomach.
Call them Genius and be done with it.......2006-03-09
We'll never see their like again in this lifetime. The Beatles of our generation. Pure pop perfection. The entire catalogue. That's the other thing to consider, the amount of material in so little time. Let's call them genius and be done with it.
who cares if it's the worst album?.......2006-02-25
My impression is that the Smiths is one of those bands that has fans that love it/them so much that even their "worst" album is a deep pleasure. I could empathize with someone saying that about Strangeways, but there is still that magic that touches us, that makes us feel there music is more than music to us. I feel this way about R.E.M, up to a point (and I'm sure you know it's a point out of time), Elliott Smith, Radiohead. There are thankfully some recording artists out there who you can depend on never to release total, disappointing crap. The Smiths were one of those artists.

If it makes any difference, in the latest issue of Uncut, take 104, Marr states that the band always thought 'Strangeways' as their strongest record.
I personally think 'Meat is Murder' was best, but I remember listening to Strangeways very heavily in 1987, and having a complete feeling of sadness, because you knew it was over. Not because it was poor in any way, but because the mood of the record was so alone.

Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas Wolk

Absolutely peerless.......2006-11-17
"Porgy and Bess" has just opened (with some controversy) in London's West End, though as a musical and not as an opera as it was originally conceived. Reviews have been promising and I aim to go down and see it soon. I decided to listen to this CD to put myself in the mood. I hadn't listened to it for years and I'd completely forgotten how good it actually is. Ella's voice blends with Louis' perfectly and Russell Garcia's orchestration gives them a dreamy landscape to perform against. I have one or two other CDs by Louis and Ella but this one is by far my favourite. The CD opens with "Overture" and its orchestral performance of classics like "Summertime", "I Wants To Stay Here", "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "It Ain't Neccessarily So" set the tone nicely, leaving one ever so keen for the vocal versions. Louis Armstong has a very rough tone to his voice but the emotion he packs with it is moving, most especially on the mournful "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" And we get all this and Louis' wonderful trumpet playing too?
Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.

Two thousand five hundred musicians have recorded "Summertime" --- it's a classic. (I bet most Americans can name Janis Joplin and no other singer.) As for "Porgy and Bess," the folk opera from which "Summertime" springs, it's such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone ever had a harsh word to say about it.
But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."
A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."
And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."
All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.
"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.
Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.
And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.

The fusion between the great two voices and the orchestra is just brilliant. Very good brass and violins that accompany Fitzeralds and Armstrongs magic voices leaves you with your mouth open.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.
FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16
This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.
It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.
On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.
This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.
Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28
Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.
If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.
Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15
I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.
Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.
Very Functional.......2006-03-19
This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

In 1973, fed up with Bryan Ferry's domineering in Roxy Music, Eno leapt into a solo career that would find him championing the "art" in "artifice." Warm Jets sports a lightheartedness that was a refreshing antidote to the pomposity of Yes and ELP on the dark side of art-rock's spectrum, with nonsensical, sound-based couplets such as "Oh headless chicken / How can those teeth stand so much kicking?" This debut is a milestone not just for Eno, but for all rocking music. Listen to Fripp's furious guitars on "Baby's On Fire" and "Blank Frank." "Tyler B." gets it so wrong it isn't funny. The songs on HCTWJ are quirky, catchy, funny, inventive, and fresh, even after 30 years.
There are more ideas on this album than in most bands' entire body of work. The nice thing, though, is that you can ignore all the word games, genre-jumping, and clever studio tricks. and just rock out.
If you are familiar with Eno's later work, know that his first two solo albums are far from ambient.

Brian Eno - Father of Indie.......2007-04-11
Although this album pretty much started the Indie music genre that we know today, it just really isn't, umm, ANY GOOD! Eno's songs are quirky, musical, and innovative...but they simply aren't very enjoyable.
However, if you ARE into Indie, you will probably like the album...
Just be mindful that Brian Eno is a "musician's musician." (If you've never heard that term before, then you DEFINATELY won't like this album.)
I Just Hope He's Talking About Water.......2007-01-30
This album has a lot in common with the first side of David Bowie's "Low" and also with some of the material on Bowie's "Scary Monsters." There's also a heavy, John Lennon-inspired track called "Driving Me Backwards," which is a little scary. I own the LP and prefer Side B. Side A has two songs that are too long and not so good. "Baby's On Fire" and "Driving Me Backwards" are not at the same level as the rest of the songs.
The music is heavy, flaky and unnerving all at the same time. The cover is all a psych experimenter would need for his/her psych experiment. He/she wouldn't even need to listen to the music. The cadences on "Cindy Tells Me" are very similar to those on "Ashes to Ashes" on Bowie's "Scary Monsters" and those on "Blank Frank" recall "Up the Hill Backwards" on the same record. Eno's stuff is more interesting in some ways though because he stands back from it a little more and so, unlike Bowie's music, it could be the plumber or the mailman on a bit of a demented, avant-garde recording spree. For Eno, it's of interest, but not of that much interest. Bowie's artiface finds everything ironic and lamentable too; it's just that he takes his observer role too seriously. This is necessary for his music to work. Eno, on the other hand, sounds like he'd rather be fishing or forming a Ponzi scheme. The ultimate manipulator has to know how to manipulate (hide) his ego too. Consequently, the rough transitions are much less jarring because the emotions have already been "synthesized" by the artist. It's like the light we see from distant stars: it happened 50 million light-years ago. There is no neurotic need to get our attention: we are not the audience, as we are for most artists. The door to Eno's loony bin has merely been left open. People "come and go" and hide their "madness in a jar." Brian just forgot to close the door, like he always does. This is a most effective approach to New Wave music because it counter-balances the up-in-your-face timeliness of the genre. Absent here is the leering face of Elvis Costello, daring you to question his choice of eyeglass frames. Brian seems ready for that tennis match with the other gay aliens. The Brits have a knack for sanitizing madness.
I didn't know New Wave was around in 1973 but I guess it was. The title could be about being peed on by hobos, which would make for an interesting take on "Driving Me Backwards," not to mention another juicy theme for the BBC. You're left to fend for yourself.
The song "Here Come the Warm Jets" must be heard in its entirety, even though it doesn't have one. So you need to hear the other songs first. The intro contains phantasmagorical bells - very nice. They are joined by a super-charged dynamo of a melody that can't be explained - you have to hear it. It is either just synthesizers or both synthesizers and guitars and the stroke of genius here is that it is a driving, powerful rock song and there are no drums! (You can't have your emotions until Oscar Wilde's incompetent ghost gives the OK, and he's presently tied up.) Just when you think you can't take it anymore, Eno introduces the drums, but they are out of sync with the melody. Pretty soon, they are where they "should" be. The heightened effect of all of this manipulation is like downing one of those Jack Kerouac apple pies with ice cream, along with a big glass of beer and a chick.
A muffled, unintelligible chorus gives the piece an understated, religious quality - like those bluegrass singers who bely the frantic fingerpicking going on around them with their monotonal droning. The contrast between the resigned tone of the voices in the chorus and the energized anticipation in the music captures the piety of true faith, in which salvation occurs when you turn in your ego. You need to listen to the other songs first for this one to work though because, on its own, it sounds kind of flaky and thin.
Eno is great.......2007-01-12
Words won't do Eno justice. Buy this album and and all his ambient work. Now!
Oh, cheeky, cheeky!.......2007-01-05
If you're new to Eno, there's no better album to start with than his first. It's amazingly eclectic both musically and lyrically, simultaneously cerebral and punk. This is Eno the iconoclast, not Eno the knob twister. Give it a listen. "This kind of experience is necessary for [your] learning."

Awesome electro pop. It's edgy, and fun........2007-05-25
I ran into this group on my travels around the world. It's too bad, we here in the states have such little variety to our choice of popular music. We have the pop acts, and the bands who have been cranking out the same balad for at least the past ten years. This album has gone to the gym with me for at least the past 3 months. We're talking 5 times a week, 2 hours a day. I haven't gotten tired of it yet. Plus, when I have it on and have company. Everyone asks about them, cause they are awesome, fun, and have enough variety to keep you interested. Musically, you have electro beats, with perfect rock guitar rifts. With a surprise track being "In Love Again" It's differnt and the reason I bought the album. It was simple, it was cool, it is pop. Bottom line: Electro Pop perfection.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

I know a lot of online reviews accuse this band of not being terribly original, but the fact is that this album is refreshing.
This record clocks in at 40 minutes, the perfect length for an album if you ask me. It doesn't drag on and there's no song that's weak enough to tempt you to hit the "skip" button on your cd player.
The obvious comparison to the Melvins has been done and I disagree with most of the other bands people compare to Big Business. I'll chip in on this one and say that Big Business reminds me of godheadsilo minus the robotic facade.

simply put, AWESOME !!!! and if you have a chance, pick up as well the latest Melvins' release "(A) Senile Animal" with the guys from this band fused with Buzz and Dale to create one of the finest Melvins' masterpieces in years !!!

'Here Come the Waterworks' blew me away, with it's thick bass, sparatic drumming, and deep vocals. Big business create a sound of their own, however you catch familiar influences throughout the cd. Imagine a heavier version of the who/sabbath mixed with some atmospheric pink floyd in some areas. Really it's hard to compare to any other specific band, but anyone who enjoys thick proggy, bass-driven music will enjoy this journey. My only complaint is that, once it grows on you, you find yourself wanting just a little more than 8 tracks. It's really nice to hear a band that brings back alot of what heavy, classic rock/ metal are all about.

Big Business' new full length comes off as a new take on the music that inspired this record. It sounds like the best elements of an unknown independent music scene showing influences instead of copycats. To begin first and foremost the bass and drums stand out like you wouldn't beleive. The opening track begins with a forceful drumbeat and bass sound that makes you want to continue listening. Production on this is fantastic! Every instrument stands out on it's own, which is something that most bands now as of lately can't seem to understand. I wouldn't say the songs are catchy, but they do have an element about them where upon second listen, you'll definetly remember hearing it the first time around. I'm not familiar with this band's first album but I heard so much rave about this album that I felt like I had to hear this for myself and I'm glad I did. So overall, great songs, great production, great musicianship, great album. So far in my top 5 for 2007.

Are you into crushing displays of intense metal riffage supported by substantial amounts of pure drumming insanity, then you should pick this up. Jared Warren and Coady Willis are rewritng the book of intense, purposeful thrash metal. Think if The Melvins and Motorhead had a baby (then these guys would be their own parents. Weird, huh?). Just buy it.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.
And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.
There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.
The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.
And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.
