On the follow-up to their Grammy-winning album Spirit of the Century, the three gospel-singing septuagenarians celebrate the holy side of secular songs in hopes of connecting with "the generations that are behind us," as founding member Clarence Fountain put it. Always alert to the potent message of God's mightiness, they exuberantly spiritualize the Stevie Wonder title track and Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," as well as choice picks from the songbooks of Prince ("The Cross"), George Clinton ("You and Your Folks," grafted onto the 23rd Psalm!), Ben Harper ("I Shall Not Walk Alone"), and others (Harper guests on three tracks). A few uplifting traditional gospel numbers turn up, too. Throughout the program, Blind Boy Jimmy Carter's stirring tenor voice is a minor miracle. And "sacred steel" guitarist Robert Randolph and his Family Band are important to the success of the album, supplying genuine fervor to grooves that complement the elders' heaven-bound vocals. --Frank-John Hadley

Higher Ground.......2006-12-27
Purchased this CD for my son from his Christmas wish list -- but I also have enjoyed it very much. It was shipped and received exactly as promised with no problems.
Great Album -- not just for Gospel fans! .......2005-02-17
I've been more a blues and rock fan, but after hearing the Blind Boys of Alabama on their "There Will Be a Light" CD with Ben Harper I decided to buy "Higher Ground". What a great CD and what moving music. Every cut is superb. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes great music.
Great Album.......2003-09-24
I love this album! They all have great soulful voices and a really great back-up band. Nice variety of songs from slow ballads to rocking blues.
The other senses do get stronger.......2003-09-07
Glad they weren't the Deaf Boys of Alabama. My first listen was off Peter Gabriel's latest album which features the Blind Boys in a couple tracks. Great harmonies brought me to this album, and after accidentally running into a concert of theirs during the Montreal Jazz Festival a night before I was to see Peter Gabriel in concert, I was only disappointed that they didn't show up to perform at the last concert of Gabriel's tour the next night. However, I was in awe! The presence, the power and they rocked the house. I wished I was able to find a rockin baptist church so I could hear this kind of live musical power on a weekly basis. You won't be disappointed in this CD.
The Blind Boys weave their voices in spiritual fervor.......2003-02-26
Though they have gospel origins, the Blind Boys of Alabama have garnered world-wide secular acclaim with the raw passion of their singing and harmonizing. They've been together for so many decades that they have all blended their vocal skills together to form a spiritual orchestra that moves you through not just spiritual classics but some original versions of popular contemporary hits as well.

She's been eclipsed by a generation of newfangled power divas, but Babs still has it--superior repertoire in the Tin Pan Alley tradition, deep-pile production from the likes of Foster, Mardin and Afanasieff, and those zillion dollar pipes. Cuddlesome James Brolin gets a credit "for giving me the love I sing about" on tunes like "Leading with Your Heart," while the title track, "At the Same Time," and "Everything Must Change" could one day be used in a Broadway musical about pre-millennial spirituality. --Jeff Bateman

Don't Drop Dead.......2007-05-26
When Barbra and I planned this album the day we met in 1068 to express her grief for a then possibly unknown-to-her Virginia, perhaps even the one assured there was a Santa Claus, whose death she had announced the previous year at a free concert, the main source for the subsequent video and audio versions, albums having concepts related to the Beatles were less than a year old. We decided that saying, "Don't drop dead" would be better than saying, "Drop dead" and that that would be the concept/theme/idea/ simplified message of "Higher Ground." Dirt above some corpses is higher than surrounding ground, we knew. I did not know Richard Rodgers's daughter would be quoted in a biography of her father as saying her father was an athiest, when we decided the combination of "I Believe" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" would include a reference to the dialogue of the movie "Miracle on 34th St." This work was released after I had lost most of my hope tht my novel "How Did That Sun Get Out" would be published in my lifetime; I had forgotten we planned it until I had heard it several times. On the way to a second marriage with a man who had worked with her first husband acting for a movie related to the actual landing on the moon about 7 months after an astronaut had come back from the dark side of the moon saying there still was a Santa Claus. this work was released suggesting that I had never even lived.
Deeply Moving.......2007-05-22
I recently purchased this album. I found it to be very soothing and spiritual. It provoked much soul searching and reflection. I love it!
Great touching music.......2006-11-03
This is a second copy I bought for a friend since I loved mine so much. The song "If I could" should be given to every mother with a box of tissues.
Barbara does Inspiration.......2006-09-07
'Higher Ground' by Barbra Streisand is, in many ways, very typical of a long string of Streisand albums done to capitalize on a popular theme or collaborator. That does not make this a weak album. In fact, I consider it one of her stronger albums of the last few years, especially when compared to her recent live issues and treatments of Broadway numbers.
The material does especially well when Streisand overlays her lushly interpretive style over material which has a very traditional feel to it, in spite of the fact that most of the numbers are relatively recent compositions.
Another classic album by the legendary classical Barbra!.......2006-08-06
12 new amazing recordings by this huge voice.
Barbra is really elective on the songs this time. They are all ballads but they're all so different from each other. Her duet with Celine Dion is a love ballad, in fact, it's the only love ballad. All the others are faith and hope ballads.
Barbra sings perfectly at her 55 and also, looks stunning on the photos. You have GOT to buy this album to recognize and admit the worth of this legendary singer and learn to judge the music you hear better, that is, more severely.

Is music for a good cause a good cause for music? Not really, if you expect artistry. But this smorgasbord of popular international musical stars brings together extreme musical genres for an excellent purpose, and is enjoyable enough for almost anyone. Pavarotti's relaxed and buoyant leadership and still gorgeous tenor add beauty to the rock/pop selections. Trisha Yearwood, Celine Dion, and Stevie Wonder impressively hold their own against Opera Spice; but the other artists pale against the master's presence. The Spice Girls will never be confused with Anonymous 4; Zucchero's growling is scary; Florent Pagny exemplifies French rock; and Pino Daniele's breathy tenor is mellow and soothing. Best for those wanting to experience Pavarotti's vocal beauty in a more popular idiom. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
A Superb Collection of Music.......2002-11-14
As a musician, I first ran into this disk as a PBS broadcast. What caught my ear was that every song in the concert has "the groove." Other than a children's choral cut, not a single song in the entire collection has a flaw. You'd think the Spice Girls would be a silly addition to the concert, but they do a tremendous job. Each artist appears twice, usually with Pavaotti in one of their songs, sometimes twice. Vanessa Williams is Hot! and does an incredible dance number. The engineering is excellent, with solid side-to-side separation for a really "big" sound. All in all, this is one of the favorite CDs in my music library.
This is a delightful combination of music talents to enjoy!.......1999-04-01
We first saw Pavarotti and Friends on Public Television as a fundraising event. We found the CD and especially love to listen to this CD in our car which has a great sound system. Each vocalist is so special and you will be singing along with them after a couple of plays!
This will tenderize your heart........1999-03-07
Brilliant talent for needy children, that touches the soul, and sets it on fire. Your tears will soak your socks. James
Phenomenal !! A must have for any music library........1998-12-29
A most wonderful gathering of some of the world's greatest vocalists. Such a unique blend of international Modern & Classical. If one were to put to test the ability of a vocalist to adapt to a variety of melodies, this is it. Grab your lover and take a trip in their arms with this CD!!
Outstanding Music, bringing Pavarotti to new heights........1998-12-06
Easily the best in the Pavarotti & Friends series. Always an artist on the cutting edge, with this album, Pavarotti's work will have great appeal to his fans and to scores of new enthusiasts. His duets with the Spice Girls, Vanessa Williams, Zucchero, and Stevie Wonder make it obvious that his voice has adaptability and a passion that takes it into many musical genres with ease. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Sting once commented that great music occurs in the "synaptic gaps" where many different styles come together - this is an album that epitomizes the concept. Neopolitan music is a folk music in Italy, with overtones of American folk/country/jazz/rock, and Pavarotti is the Neopolitan master. This is a perfect fit of artists and selected titles. Earlier combinations of artists in this series were often much too somber, much less fun. Give this one to your teens or your great grandmother ... they'll find they have more musical tastes in common than they'd have ever imagined.

The lineup of this nationally televised concert, organized by Wynton Marsalis at Jazz at Lincoln Center, ranged from the gospel queen Shirley Caesar to the quiet wunderkind Norah Jones. But the night belonged to the Big Easy's brethren, including the crawfish cadences of Buckwheat Zydeco's "I'm Going to Love You Anyway" and the second line strut of Art and Aaron Neville's "Go to the Mardi Gras." Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield's tearful "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" was dedicated to his missing father. The Jordan family: flutist Kent, violinist Rachel, vocalist Stephanie, and trumpeter Marlon--who was trapped for days on a roof--performed a heartfelt, affirmative rendition of "Here's to Life." Without the Crescent City, American music as we know it does not exist. If enough of you buy this CD, we won't "Know What it Means To Miss New Orleans." --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Another Katrina Relief CD.......2006-03-01
I also really enjoyed this CD from various artists. Anything I can do to help in little ways like this, I am more than happy to do. My heart goes out to everyone still in NO. This CD will be played every Mardi Gras season I am around and maybe even on the off-season, too!
Remembering New Orleans.......2006-02-28
Anybody who loves New Orleans will love this CD. It has many of the hit songs associated with the city performed by stellar
artists and many new interpretations of old favorites as well.
Best of all, buying the CD allows money to go to Hurricane Katrina relief.
top flight.......2006-01-27
ok---I haven't heard the whole cd yet, and I'm sorry to see that others who have reviewed it were disappointed that certain cuts were 'cut'. HOWEVER, I'm about to purchase this cd based solely upon the one cut I heard yesterday on our local music station WWOZ in New Orleans. What I heard was Irvin Mayfield's "Just a Closer Walk With Thee". It's INSANELY GOOD. Being from New Orleans, I've heard this tune done dozens of different ways...and I've heard Irvin Mayfield live dozens of times...but this is beyond amazing. At least try to hear this cut IN FULL. This is a 'turn off the lights and concentrate' sort of offering.
Great Performances/Great Cause.......2006-01-16
You can't listen to this CD without Katrina's aftermath running through your mind. That doesn't make it a sad listening experience, just a very meaningful one beyond just the sounds coming through the speakers.
There's jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues... all the sounds that made New Orleans a music mecca. The performers are the best (Wynton Marsalis, Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, James Taylor, Buckwheat Zydeco and others).
Treat yourself to this stellar collection of artists/songs and do something to benefit New Orleans at the same time.

Album Description
After two solid years of touring with the likes of Flogging Molly, the Vans Warped Tour, The Casualties, Tiger Army, The Adolescents, and several headlining runs, L.A.'s Briggs now deliver their most ambitious album to date with lyrics that are a lot more in-depth than on previous records. While singer Joey LaRocca cites songwriter influences like Billy Bragg, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello, this record still packs plenty of punk rock punch. Produced by Joe Gittleman (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones).

Back To Higher Ground.......2007-05-08
The Briggs-Back To Higher Ground ****
The Larocca brothers Joey and Joason, the heart and soul of The Briggs have brought the band together for their most abitious studio album yet Back To Higher Ground. The album is just as powerful or as strong as any street punk album out today. Joey and Jason aside from playing guitar and singing all the vocals the two brothers also write almost all of the material for the album as well. Loud fast punk rock with socialy concious lyrics are The Briggs' mainstay because why fix what isnt broken right? Chris X is very prominant on this album, more so infact then on the bands pervious recordings. Ryan Roberts is more and more showing himself as one of punk rocks strongest and best bass players to date.
The albums title track opens up the album. 'Back To Higher Ground' is a great song about never backing down and standing your ground. Excellent lyrics and guitar that is played agressively yet melodicly. A wonderful way to start off the album. It really lets you know what you are in for. 'Let Them Know' is just one great vocal performance. Simply fantastic. No punk album is complete these days with out least one song about the powers that be and this is that song. 'Song Of Babylon' doesnt have a very clear message as to what it is about, seems open to inrepretation, but none the less it is a very goood song as well as a very catchy one. 'Common And Unknown' is one of the best songs on the album. Easily the best and strongest lyrics on the album. A great performance. Sure to become a concert favorite. A great song for the common man and the unsung heros. 'Maritime Tragidies' is next. Killer. Amazing chorus and incredible group vocals make this song very powerful. Listeners will be surly singing along with this track. 'Everyones An Actor' is full of wows and woooooows. Very agressive and in your face, which is hard to belieave concidering that the song is relativly slower than the rest of the album. 'Wasting Time' is straight up street punk. Great vocals and decent lyrics make this a great song. But the song does come across as The Briggs were in the studio trying to write a song while they were getting loaded and ended up making a drinking song about wasting time. 'Insane' is the closest to a ballad that the band gets on Back To Higher Ground. It is a nice song that takes the tone of the album down drasticly. 'My Own Enemy' is a insanly good song. There is nothing to say it speaks for itself. You must hear it to understand. It is totally the anti-thesis of punk rock in a punk rock song, so the irony helps to make the song even better. 'Harder To Stand' features some nice guitar playing and has a slight ska feel. Not much of a stand out but still a good song. 'Blacklist' is one of the better songs on the album. Not instantly memorable, it does take a while to grow on you but it is perhaps the best song on the entire album once you give it a chance. Back To Higher Ground closes with 'Dont Care' a song that is slow to start but once it gets some speed it doesnt let up until the end. The perfect closer for the album, though the song would have done just as well opening the album as it does closing. A slight ska bridge in the middle gives the song a nice texture as does the wonderful guitar interplay between Joey and Jason. Chris does a nice job of rythm changes and using odd time signatures in a punk song but it is Ryan that shines the most. His bass playng is the best that he has ever done, it really adds something nice to the song. It leaves you wanting more.
The Briggs are well on their way to becoming one of the great punk bands of all time. They are easily one of the strongest, with their great musical ability and their talent at writing great socialy concious lyrics with ease. Back To Higher Ground is a testement to how good this band is and how far they have come since their debut. As of the last 15 years most punk bands change drasticly after their first album and totally become what they started out against, which is not necessaraley a bad thing, but The Briggs have stuck to their guns and it has paid off in making this the bands best album to date.
Good stuff........2007-05-04
So after missing The Briggs twice this year already (once when they opened for Dropkicks and another time when they opened for Street Dogs), I purchased this album at their merch table the second time I missed them because my friend highly recommened it. I'm glad this person is my friend. This is probably my favorite CD I've bought all year. Every song is listenable, but songs like 'Back to Higher Ground', 'Let Them Know', 'Common & Unknown', 'Maritime Tragedies', 'Don't Care' and 'Blacklist' (my personal favorite) are outstanding.
I swear I'm not gonna miss them for a third time when Warped Tour rolls my way...
Classic punk.......2006-11-13
Really good-quality classic-style punk. Sounds a bit like vintage best-of Clash blended with the best working-class Dropkick Murphys tunes. Great, catchy riffs that don't skimp on the punk attitude. Proof that punk doesn't need to be raw or amateurish to be really damn good music.

Halpern's Best Overall Mix..........2006-08-22
From start to finish, you will go into a relaxed alpha-theta brainwave state, drift-off, and wake up refreshed, clearer-headed, and in better spirits. I own several of his, as well as other meditation and ambient space music....this is among my favorites.
Soothing Enough For A Baby..........2002-07-17
I purchased this to replace my tape that had worn out. One afternoon I put this on as my grandaughter likes music. I now play this while she has her bottle & rocks to sleep for her nap.
TAKES YOU TO HIGHER GROUND............2002-06-20
I recently had my copy on cassette tape break and couldn't wait to receive my new copy of HIGHER GROUND. This is an excellent meditation tape that has taken me into some of the deepest meditations ever. The music is beautiful and very spiritual.
Turn it on and disappear.......2001-03-02
While I am a fan of many of Steven Halpern's work, this one is my personal favorite.I never hear the end of this CD if I play it when I'm tired or before bed. Like the title says, this music truly brings you to higher ground. It enhances and deepens meditation, and is a wonderful accompaniment to massage.

HUGE Chili Pepper Fan.......2006-12-14
I enjoy this album very much. I am a RHCP fanatic although sometimes I am in the mood for light relaxing music and this fits perfectly. So, I get to enjoy the best of both worlds with this excellent tribute to their work. Might I add that Under the Bridge is beautifully composed here, and is my favorite track of all time and on this album as well.
Not-so-loud Chili Peppers' songs.......2006-10-30
First and foremost, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a hard rock band. Nobody is going to buy this album in order to hear the Chili Peppers- that would be stupidity. There are only two reasons anybody would purchase this album:
1. You love the Chili Peppers' music and You want a change of pace.
2. You love listening to string instruments (such as the violin).
Buy this album if you love the Chili Peppers' music and you love strings. That sounds like a no-brainer...
enjoyable.......2005-03-10
I realy happend to enjoy this CD. I just bought it recently and every time i listen to it i feel like its the real thing because its so similar. I Love just relaxing to this cd. I think it is worth hearing.
Just my opinion.........2005-01-19
..but I just feel indifferent about this CD. I bought it thinking it would be an orchestrated-type stuff, which it is but I was hoping for something I could relax to. Whenever I hear the music in this CD, I think of weddings. Don't get me wrong, it's a good CD, but just not what I was expecting (which was a more relaxing kind of orchestration).
oh man.......2004-06-29
i bought this cd when i went looking for the last elusive cd that was missing from my rhcp collection(freaky styley, you should buy that one too)...i ended up walking out with this one as well and i rocked it all the way home with my windows open. this isn't an orchestral arrangement, it is a true to the original quartet: every solo, (almost) every fill, and every vocal que is present. The basslines jump from Persiani's prodigious upright (bass) and u can almost picture flea bouncing around. this work brought a whole new breadth and life to th emusic that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end; and for that, i applaud the string quartet.

Country-bwai Dwight "Bushman" Duncan had to hitchhike to Kingston to jump into the dancehall scene and get his career started properly. But when he finally got going--whoa! Higher Ground follows two critically acclaimed albums (including an "essential" recommendation from Reggae Rough Guide authors Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton for his debut, Nyah Man Chant) and reveals a continuing debt to classic crooners like Dennis Brown, Garnet Silk, and Johnny Clarke. Bushman has been compared to fellow country transplant Luciano, and indeed, his golden baritone and conscious lyrics seem kindred in spirit to that new-rootsman. But don't confuse the stylistic similarities with a lack of originality. Songs like "Your Love," "On the Road," and "Love of the Heart" boast beautiful melodies, inspired singing, and magnificent arrangements. King Jammy's spacious riddims allow Bushman's voice to soar and float like his messages. Higher Ground is Bushman's most confident and accomplished set to date, yet another gem in a career of jewels. --Jeff Chang
Customer Reviews:
Way to Step It Up!.......2004-11-22
One of the single most satisfying things about listening to a lot of music is that you are constantly exposed to a wide variety of different artists. While I certainly wouldn't call Bushman "NEW" to me, (I've known of him just about the time he started seriously recording) 2004 was the first year that I actually started really listening to the artist, and I've been deeply impressed from the start.
Higher ground was one of his excellent albums on the Greensleeves label and it took me 3 years to actually get it, but it was worth the 'wait'. Higher Ground is amazing from start to finish. Bushman's style falls smack right in the middle of such singers as Luciano and Prince Malachi, where he differs from those artists, however, is his style of writing. Bushman writes 100% about the things that he sees, Luciano is so adept at writing songs that he can write a 7 minute boom tune about a thought he once had one day 20 years ago! And Malachi came up in that Xterminator camp (as did Luciano actually) where everyone there seemingly devotes every waking second to writing lyrics.
The best tune here is probably Yaad Away Home, the opener, however, I have a hard time deciding between that one and Robbery Aggravation, Robbery Aggravation is massive! Also really really love Your Love, Fire Pon a Deadas, Make a Change, Blood Out and Love of the Heart, but like I said, this one is a real winner, one of the very few albums that I own (and I own literally thousands of reggae albums) which can be enjoyed from beginning to end while extending its 16 tracks over an hour+.
Overall, Higher Ground is not as risk-taking as a lot of other roots reggae albums, its pretty straight forwards. Bushman is singing about topics which can generally effect everyone, dismiss Higher Ground a a project from just another Rasta Man singer and you'll never forgive yourself. Higher Ground is amazing!
