Customer Reviews:
This will make a classical listener out of a hillbillie.......2007-06-02
I sort of think of myself as a Viginia Hillbillie... educated however. I am not into classical music either. There is, however, something about Pachelbel's Canon that does something miraculous to my mind. The music is beautiful... very very beautiful. I put the CD in my car, roll the windows up and turn up the sound and listen to it end-to-end over and over again. It is so soothing... causing a rush of seratonin in your brain making the world seeming all part of your euphoria.
Even if you aren't into classical... buy this one and you will impress your friends with your new found sophistication... and you won't have to fake it either!!!
Repetitivley Wonderful.......2007-05-08
I was in an art gallery when I heard this playing in the background, I asked the sales associate what this was and she told me. I especially love number 4 "Cannon of the three Stars" by "The Plasma Symphony Orchestra". The new age sound was very lovely. You will love this album.
Best versions of The Canon!.......2007-03-28
This cd contains every version of Pachelbel's Canon that you can imagine from a piece like this. Each version proves that the song sounds incredible no matter which instrument(s) it is played with.
A DEFINITE MUST-HAVE for anyone that likes this song! (Perfect for the wedding also!)
Amazing.......2005-12-20
What a great CD. I can't even put into words how relaxing it is to listen to this after a long day. Just sort of puts you at ease with the world in a time when serenity is so often torn from our hands.
Absolutely outstanding compilation!.......2005-07-27
I truly find this compilation of fifteen different arrangements consisting of piano, orchestra, flute, guitar, vocal, etc. to be of absolute profound quality. This is a brilliant and creative assortment and it magnifies my appreciation for the Cannon in D. The listener is provided with over an hour of exquisite, listening pleasure and it is most enjoyable. I have much admiration for the various symphonic orchestras and I also enjoy listening to the flute played by James Galway on track two, the piano duo on track three, and the shakuhachi and koto quintet on track eight. My only suggestion is that the appearance of the Cd should reflect the professional quality of the music contained therein. The animal drawings just may not appeal to some buyers.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Latino Velvet's Best.......2004-01-25
Velvetism is for all the real homies that judge music based on quality and stay away from all that commercial garbage. Every song is tight. I've been following Latino Velvet a long time and, song for song, this the their best album. It's not nearly as hardcore as Baby Beesh in Dopehouse but the beats are 95% better than most rappers. This is an album for anyone who grew up on Frost and love that pimp mode, player style.
Best album of 2002!!!.......2003-09-23
Jay Tee of N2DEEP and Baby Beesh of Potna Deuce come together and again produce a classic album. Top notch production and features make this album one of if not the best album of 2002. She Was A Hustler is a tight track featuring Mr. Kee and Merciless shines on Vamanos while What's Goin' On? should have been a certified radio hit.
You can't pass this one up.......2003-04-11
This is one of the most sickest heated laced up albums Beesh and Jay Tee have done so far, the lyrics were too tight, and the beats were off the hook, no b.s. this album is the fire. If you ain't feeling it, all I can say is you must be a square that don't deserve to have the album in the first place. Get this asap homies, alrato
West Coast Masterpiece.......2002-09-11
This is quality hip hop form start to finish, the beats are mind blowing, and the lyrics represent good west coast rap.
I am gonna be bumping this cd for a long time, it is a perfect album to bump in your ride.
COP this album it is hot u will not be dissappointed

Album Description
Gene McDaniels had a brief but successful career as a pop singer in the early 60's when Gene signed a contract with Liberty Records and worked with producer Tommy ''Snuff'' Garrett, who supplied Gene with songs written by the Brill Building stable of songwriters. In all he had six top forty hits, all in 1961 and 1962. Later, he began to go by the name Eugene McDaniels and recorded some soul-styled social consciousness records for Atlantic in the early 70's. He also wrote a number of songs as Eugene McDaniels, including 'Feel Like Makin' Love', which was a number one hit for Roberta Flack in 1974. Here we have Gene's second UK Liberty Records album coupled with a 1962 US compilation featuring songs such as 'Green Door', 'Tower of Strength' & his first, biggest hit 'A Hundred Pounds Of Clay'. Digitally remastered, slip-cased with new notes. BGO. 2005.

Customer Reviews:
I'm very happy with Gene.......2006-08-01
At last the Cd version of one of Gene McDaniels best albums: SOmetimes I'm happy.....The orchestrations are wonderful (Gerald Wilson f.i.) I like Green Door, In a Sentimental Mood.
But why combine with the Hit after Hit album? There's a much better Spanish Lace or the Wonderful world of ...album. It seems to be impossible to left out 110 Pounds of Clay.
And Surprise, Surprise!. There are 31 songs on the CD. The Inlay mentioned only 30 songs!

Album Description
It's been said that Memphis is mentioned in more song titles than any other city. On In The Mood For Memphis you'll hear a diverse musical testimonial from some of Memphis' most dynamic voices. For the first time ever, a CD has been compiled celebrating the rock and blues Mecca of the world with 16 songs, each with Memphis in the title. From the mainstream "Walking In Memphis" performed by Eddie Harrison to the underground sounds of Mud Boy & the Neutrons' "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," In The Mood For Memphis is filled with soul-pleasing, groove-controlling, guaranteed satisfaction.
Powerful and charismatic singers Gary Johns and Susan Marshall each perform different versions of the title track. Don McMinn's funky "Memphis In May" sets the mood for an exquisite rendition of "Memphis In June" by jazz diva Joyce Cobb. With Delbert McClinton on harmonica, Dan Penn's "Memphis Women and Chicken" is smooth, Southern and irresistible. You'll also hear Holly Shelton's sultry interpretation of W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues" (followed by a haunting instrumental with The W.C. Handy Preservation Band). Songwriter Bob Cheevers adds his irresistible "Memphis Till Monday" exclaiming the virtues of good ole Memphis barbecue and fun. Gusto jumps in with a lively version of Lyle Lovett's "I've Been To Memphis." Other highlights include Daddy Mack Orr and Billy Gibson on the Chuck Berry/Johnny Rivers classic "Memphis," the soulful sounds of the Memphis All-Stars on their feel-good original "Lovely Memphis Day," and The McCarty-Hite Project's "Memphis Town." Cult rockers The Delta Queens include their raw, but fiercely independent "Memphis (Highway 72)," as the almost final track.
Patrick Dodd concludes the CD in a reflective tone with "Memphis Keeps Rolling On," a gospel-tinged pop ballad that examines the struggles and triumphs of Memphis and its legacy.
Since 1992, Inside Sounds has focused on producing the best of Memphis, from blues to alternative rock, and is the parent company of the critically acclaimed Memphis Archives label.

Memphis moods.......2004-02-18
16 songs of and about Memphis - in fact, Memphis is in the title of each and every song.
I was a wary of this album at first but the more I thought about it, the more I understood it. Memphis' diverse musical situation needs to be celebrated and Dattel has compiled a carefully conceived and varied selection here.
Some songs will be recognized, some won't. Some were done in Memphis (most of them) and some in other places. Some songs are old, some songs are new, but for the most part it's a blues album, and since it's from Memphis, even the weak cuts are strong.
Susan Marshall's "In the Mood for Memphis" begins the album and seven songs later, we hear vocalist Gary Johns' version of the same song. Longtime player Don McMinn tells about "Memphis in May" and Joyce Cobb tells us all about "Memphis in June" in her unique.
Two songs jumped out at me and made the album worth the time - Jim Dickinson's Mud Boy and the Neutrons hammering out his friend Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again). " It's done with verve and vigor and I've always liked Jim's voice.
Eddie Harrison's version of "Walking in Memphis" is the best version of that Grammy-winning song I've ever heard. I remember seeing and hearing Eddie Harrison and the ShortCuts 35 years ago and thought they were great, and he's an even better singer now.
From beginning to end, the musicianship quality is top-notch and Dattel and company have an excellent CD here. If you're already from Memphis, go get this CD and celebrate your town. If you're not from Memphis, come on down! There's magic here.

Poor and Weird.......2006-06-01
That song is worth one star. After that, the songs are very derivative, very dumb, and very boring. If anybody wants to know what this sounds like, think of the Addicts. That's it. Not that I don't like the Addicts, but I personally feel that the Addicts should play the Addicts, and the briefs should play the Briefs. I mean, everything I hear from these guys, right down to the singer, sounds exactly like the Addicts. Except, they've taken the formula, and dulled it down. So in closing, treat this album as you would an Addicts B-side comp: great if your a collector, terrible for everyone else.
best cd ever.......2005-11-18
this is by far the very best cd i have ever heard. "poor and wierd", "run the other way", "silver bullet" it just gets better and better. I like run the other way the best but all the songs on here are amazing. and to top it off, the briefs are the coolest nicest people ever. buy this now!
dope punk record.......2005-11-10
i got this when i saw the queers tour with these dudes like foru uears back... they played a dope live show and then gave me the cd for only four dollars cause its all i had... now the music...
the briefs have a hilarious sense of humor and while they play a super energetic fun punk, the sense of humor carries their releases... hit after hit has the ironic cover art, and then the songs are good... this is a great energetic punk album with both pop and street punk influences...

Wakka Wakka!.......2004-05-09
This CD is great! it's the kind of cd that you don't have to waste your time finding certain tracks because all the songs are awesome. I saw them with the real mcKenzies less than a month ago and after seeing them live, which was awesome, I knew i had to buy the record. If you see them live, they're energy flows to the audience and most bands don't have that quality. This is a good buy.
Was this recorded in 1977 during the first punk wave?.......2003-04-17
LOVE this band!! I saw them open for the Damned about two years ago and have been a fan ever since. If you are looking for old school punk (spiky hair, skinny ties, pogoing & spit) and don't mind a record that has a shoestring production type sound... dude are you in for a treat!!
Highlights include "Poor & Wierd", "Rotten Love", "New Pair of Shoes" and "Dolly Parton".... but in reality the whole thing is a real kick in the pants begining to end!
I like it like babies on speed........2003-03-18
This band, at a whopping 5 stars, sound like a mix of the dickies and j. thunders with a little speacail ingrediant of their own. They made love with my ears. I like to see them live. The boys make goodness with my dancing feet.
buy this now!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-01-25
i saw this band live not too long ago and i must say they blew me away and played such an awsome show. i have not been that impressed in a really long time. every song on album is great. they are so fun. i hope they come back to detroit soon. you won't regret buying this!
I don't usually do this sort of thing.............2001-08-09
But, this is just a great record that deserves more attention than it is getting. These guys are a very tight band that have a fun and obnoxious vibe surrounding them. The songs are up-front, catchy, and well, brief. This album sounds like a throwback to early eighties and late seventies Punk, with some social satire thrown in (cf., "New Shoes"). ... That is all.

Customer Reviews:
Very Cool!.......2007-03-29
Was looking for Spike Jones' Nutcracker and ended up with alot more at one decent price.
Delightful!.......2007-01-04
From the clever series title (so-and-so's greatest hit) to the lighthearted artwork by "Mutts" creator Patrick McDonnell, this CD will delight everyone who has an ear for good music and well-recorded sound, and who appreciates musical humor.
The disc leads off with a lush "straight" reading of the suite by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, recorded in 1972.
Then the Modern Mandolin Quartet has a crack at it. You'll like the harmonious and percussive sounds of the plucked mandolins along with the creative orchestrations and ornamentations. Recorded in 1991.
For the piece de resistance, we hear Spike Jones and his City Slickers (plus a supplementary chorus) perform their recited/sung/played version, recorded in 1945. The music is well performed (as are all of Jones recordings), with tasteful (?) and sparingly applied (for this group) sound effects. The rhythmically delivered lyrics are suggestive of Vachel Lindsay, or perhaps Gilbert and Sullivan. Be warned - the emotional impact is cumulative. If you try to resist, you may suddenly find yourself on the living room floor kicking and gasping for breath.
Last we hear two movements by the First Piano Quartet (four pianos, that is) recorded in 1950. The mood here is redolent of the novelty piano genre -elaborate piano arrangements played with elegance, flair, and rich chordings.
Do your music-loving friends a favor. Next Christmas, buy a copy of this modestly-priced CD for each of their stockings.
Not what I was expecting.......2004-12-13
With its whimsical artwork on the cover, and release date of October 2004, I was expecting a 21st century recording of the music of that perennial Christmas Favorite Ballet, The Nutcracker. Instead, some of the recordings date back to 1945 (according to the liner notes), and sound it.
This CD can be viewed as four different versions of the SAME songs:
Version 1 consists of songs Songs 1 - 8, by the Philadelphia Orchestra with Eugene Ormandy conducting, was essentially what I was expecting, even though it was recorded in 1972.
Version 2 consists of Songs 9 - 16, by the Modern Mandolin Quartet, are Nutcracker songs played presumably on four Mandolins.
Version 3 consists of songs 17 - 22, were recorded in 1945 and sound it. They contain words, and are by Spike Jones, who is known for his novelty song "Der Fuhrer's Face." These songs likewise essentially are novelty songs.
Version 4 consists of songs 23 and 24. Their instrumentation is piano only. Unfortunately they were recorded in 1947 and sound it, which means that even on my $50 walkman they sound like a 78-RPM record. Version 4 was the most disappointing Version.
Overall I give this two stars. Version 1 is four star, which may say more about my lack of knowledge of classical music and recordings than its true quality. Version 4 is zero stars. Version 2 depends on whether one likes the Mandolin Quartet interpretation, and Version 3 depends on how much you like a slapstick novelty interpretation.
