5 out of 5 stars U have to own one if you were a teenager in 1984.......2001-12-10

This was during Xmas 1984. One lovely girl from Texas brought to Poland (this is where I live) the 10 cassetes pack with "The Best of Billboard - 1984". I still hear this music. Now I can buy a piece of it.

To anyone who was ...teen in 1984: you have to own this one. Don't tell me there is no music you remember from these years. It must be one at least. Remember the first girlfriend. The first kiss maybe? Yes! That's it!.

5 out of 5 stars I want my MTV!.......2000-06-17

This set takes me back to the early days of MTV. Pac-Man fever, Atari and great times in my life. As a child of the 80s it was a special time and special music. This box set helps take you back from time to time!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great collection of the top songs.......1999-09-16

again billboard has done well in putting together a box set of the best songs of this time period. you will appreciate this gathering of the best. every listening minute of this box set is pure elation. not to be passed up.

Album Description

The world's number one chart researcher, Joel Whitburn, selected the recordings for this collection. Joel is the author of the Record Research books which chronicle the artists and the records that hit Billboard's music charts. He hand picked each of the songs in this series according to chart performance and licensing availability. Sounding exactly as they did when first released, these classic recordings have been digitally remastered from original tape sources.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Buy For the Yes Track.......2005-06-07

This a a good selection and, as always with Billboard, the fidelity is first rate.

But don't buy for the Yes track "Owner of a Lonely Heart." Despite the fact that the CD makes the boastful claim that each track is "Sounding exactly as it did when first released," on "Lonely Heart" the crucial upbeat explosion of an ending--the strongest part of the whole track--is cut, entirely, in favor of a boring slow fade of the song's chorus. Since I never owned the track, my knowledge of it is 100% radio based, showing that Billboard is, shall we say, shading the truth a bit in its claims. In addition to on the original Yes album "90125," you can also find the complete version of the track on Vh1's "The Big 80s: Arena Rock," along with a few other interesting tracks.

But for the other tracks (back to the Billboard 84 CD), I don't hear any problems.

Billboard puts out a good product overall, I also recommend the 1979 disco CD if you like that stuff.

5 out of 5 stars 1984 is the best in the series.......2002-08-09

In many ways 1984 was the perfect year. All kinds of pop music were acceptable. Being flashy was cool and still had a few years to grow old, as did Hair Metal (which I still love). I actually think a box set of just '84 hits would do it better justice.

These collections don't have alot of Hard Rock, so Yes' "Owner of A Lonely Heart" is welcome, but it's in a slightly shorter version. Sure it's total pop, but it's harder than most similar stuff. Punk/New Wavers the Romantics mellow out a little with the still rocking "Talking In Your Sleep." Ray Parker's "Ghostbusters" theme was an instance where both the song and the movie were excellent. Denise Williams was a one hit wonder whose infectious dance hit "Let's Hear it for the Boy" can be found here, as well as on the "Footloose" soundtrack. The Pointer Sisters' "Jump for My Love" is close in style. The 3rd female slot here is Tina Turner with her comeback. The somewhat serious "What's love Got to do With It" is another great song. Billy Ocean also has his first hit with the tropical "Caribbean Queen" in a much edited version. The Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now" is a slower pop hit, this album is worth it just for that song.

One nice thing is 2 bands I usually hate have the one song I do like on here. The than seemingly straight George Michael with Wham performed "Wake Me up Before you Go-Go." I feel ridiculous for ever liking it, so it's nice to have it without going through the embarrassment of buying a Wham album. The same can be said for Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon." One of those songs you just kind of sing without even wanting to.

All in all, there's a few missing artists (Cyndi Lauper, Van Halen, Huey Lewis, Springsteen, etc) but what IS here is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars An all around great 80's album!.......2001-05-03

To me, 80's rock is the best music in the world. Billboard Top Hits: 1984 is the third Billboard Top Hits album that I've bought. I also have the 1983 and the 1985 albums and I rank this one second right behind the BTH: 1985 one.

This album has it all! It has upbeat rockers ("Owner of A Lonely Heart"), good ballads ("Hold Me Now"), and some songs that are downright catchy ("Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"). If you like rock 'n roll from the 80's, I definitely recommend picking up this gem.

5 out of 5 stars great CD....but where is Cyndi Lauper???.......2000-12-11

I loved all of the songs on this CD because they bring back great memories from my childhood. My favorite song of that year was "Lets Hear It For The Boy" by Deniece Williams. I also loved Karma Chameleon back then.

My only problem with this CD is that "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was not included!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......1999-07-13

This CD is a great selection of 1984 hits! If you miss 80s music, this CD is a must-have! Buy it!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a purchase I can recommend.......2002-03-04

I bought this CD using the following logic:

I like the music from "Dawn of the Dead" (released as "Zombi" in Italy) but the CD will probably be repeative. I was EXTREMELY pleased with the selections on the first entry in the DRG Goblin anthology/retrospective series, so I'd probably be content with this one, too.

I'm sorry to say that I was wrong. The first disc in the series really DID contain the very best of Goblin's film music. Most of the selections here probably did just fine as support pieces for the movies they were created for, but as independent works they just aren't all that interesting.

The "Buio Omega" cuts are drab--think Jean-Michele Jarre on a bad day--and mostly repeated from the first Goblin disc.

The "Tenebre" remix is cool and rocky in the way the "Zombi" tracks are, and is one of the CDs high points. It's definately one of the better efforts from Gobin. It's a nice revamping of the "Tenebre" theme from the first volume.

The three selections from "Phenomena" are also mostly regrettable; Jennifer is just dull, and the alternate version of the Phenomena theme is a repeat from the first Goblin disc. (A really cool track--very much classic Italian film music and a nice instrumental piece to boot--but it's already been presented in the series!) Sleepwalking is the only worthwhile cut of the trio.

The "Mark the Coakroach" cuts are so-so pieces and I once again think they probably worked in the context of the film, but they come across as weak jazz/rock fuzion pieces here. Not really bad, but not rising above the level of background noise either. (The Dance is the best of the three, but drags on for too long.)

As for what was for me the "main attraction," the Zombi/Dawn of the Dead cuts, they didn't disappoint. I found the two peices I were really looking for--the main title music and the main action music Zaratozom. Unfortunately, they repeated the film's main theme from the first Goblin disc here. So, two out of three tracks I already had... another disappointment.

The "Amo Non Amo" tracks are nice pieces, once again sounding like typical italian film music from the Seventies. They, once again, stand as average Goblin efforts, with "Yell" being the only of the trio that barely manages to rise above background noice status.

I really recommend that you stay away from this disc, unless you're the world's biggest Goblin fan who must own EVERYTHING! It really isn't a good value for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Another Fine Goblin Collection But With More Repetition.......2001-03-26

For those of you who are planning to build your Goblin collection around the four volume DRG Records series (which I did), it can get kinda frustrating with the repeated tracks on some of the CDs. On this the third volume, the first two tracks from Buio Omega are repeated from The Goblin Collection. So are Phenomena (from Phenomena, which is an alternate version, not the album version) and L'alba Dei Morti Viventi (from Zombi). The Tenebre Remix doesn't differ that greatly from the classic title track, either(that might be a good thing). Still, it's another fine collection here, with some rare tracks from the film Amo Non Amo (which, when released in the states, were replaced by Burt Bacharach songs, sheesh!!!!!!!) being the main reason why I bought this CD. It's definitely worth having.

4 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite.......2000-05-04

This CD does not come close to the Zombi anniversary CD, as this only has three tracks from the Dawn of the Dead Soundtrack, but it is a good starter. I had this CD before the Dawn CD, so it was nice to at least have a few good Dawn songs before my Zombi CD arrived. Other tracks are good, but not as memorable as classic Dawn tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent progressive soundtrack music.......1999-10-14

Goblin is an always-excellent Italian band most noted for their film scores. This, DRG's third compilation, would stand better as part of a larger set rather than on its own. While the music contained herein is for the most part very good, it only offers a few glimpses of the many sounds Goblin offered in over a decade of work. There's not a lot of consistancy here in this compilation, but nevertheless it is all uniquely fascinating progressive rock/electronic soundtrack music.

1 out of 5 stars THESE GUYS SUCK, REALLY, REALLY SUCK.......1999-05-22

If I could have given less than 1 star to this I would have. When I first heard them in "Dawn of the Dead" I thought they were a preprogramed track on a keyboard. If you listen to this album, your ears will begin to bleed, your brain will leak out your nose, and may god have mercy on your soul.

4 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper - 'Freedom For Frankenstein:Hits&Pieces,1984-1991' (Raven).......2006-11-07

Good Australian import CD release compilation. This is like my third CD title I've reviewed on the Raven label. One thing I've noticed about Raven CD's,are that whatever the artist, the compilations USUALLY feature songs that one doesn't see on every other comp. available.Total of eighteen tracks, with a running time of over 78 minutes.Wow!That's a long dang CD!I liked, hearing once again "Teenage Frankenstein" (who says that Alice lost his touch in the '80's? No way!), "Freedom", his Spirit cover of "I Got A Line On You", "Hey Stoopid", the eerie "Sick Things" and his stellar cover of Hendrix's "Fire". Comes with a nicely assembled l6-page booklet. Very nice. Recommended. While you're at it, check out other Raven CD releases.

"FREEDOM FOR FRANKENSTEIN: HITS & PIECES 1984-91"

REVIEW:

In the past 15 years, Alice Cooper's mid-to-late 80's/early 90's output has often been peddled out onto "slapped together" compilation albums. However, 'Freedom For Frankenstein' emerges as the best of the bunch. With eighteen tracks that include some of the best of his work during that era also includes rarities and live renditions of some of his 70's classics. And that is where this album becomes essential for the die hard Alice Cooper fan. The live tracks are indeed excellent (especially 'Dwight Fry') and are a massive improvement over both of his 1977 and his 1997 live albums. Those just looking for the "hits" will also be pleased to see the Top 10 hit single "Poison," as well as the mid-level hits like "He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask)," "House of Fire," "Hey Stoopid," and "Feed My Frankenstein" also being included in this package. However, like most compilation albums, fans will always find a song --- or even several songs --- that are not represented but should be. And 'Freedom For Frankenstein' is certainly no different. But as it stands, it is a welcome addition to your Alice Cooper collection.

NOTABLE ARTISTS / MUSICIANS INCLUDED ARE:

Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Slash, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Joe Perry (guitar); among others.

INTERESTING FACTS:

1. Released on May 19th 1998, "Freedom For Frankenstein" is an Australian release only.

2. The track "I Got A Line On You" was only released as a "promo-only" single in the US and as part of an EP in the UK. The track "It Rained All Night" originally appeared on the Japanese version of the greatest hits package "Classicks".

3. The live tracks "Go To Hell" and "Ballad of Dwight Fry" were recorded on March 6th 1987 at the Cincinnati Gardens for the radio program "Superstar Concert Series". "Sick Things" and the medley of "only Women Blood" and "Wind Up Toy" were from the September 1991 Electric Ladyland Studio recordings done for the Album Network.

PACKAGING:

Cool front and back album covers are complimented by an excellent 16 page booklet covering the history of Alice Cooper and the tracks that appear within. It should also be noted that the CD is a picture disk.

APPROX. RUNNING TIME:

78 min. and 25 sec.

FINAL ANALYSIS:

'Freedom For Frankenstein' makes a great companion piece to his 1974 Greatest Hits album while the die hards are treated with some great rarities and live tracks. **** out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2004-04-13

Ignore any reveiws you see from the die hard Alice Cooper fans who have a hard time coming to terms with the Alice Cooper band breaking up and Alice going solo.

This album is a terrific blend of a few of the great hits from his come back album of the late 80's to early 90's material from the albums "Contrictor" "Raise Your Fist" "Trash" "Hey Stoopid" and "The Last Temptation"

Even tho i'd recomend any of those albums over this one. This is an album that is defintly worth purchasing. It has a selected amount of the best from the albums i mentioned, plus it comes with some rarer tracks like "Rained All night" which is a great hard rock song, and was previously only available on the japanese version of Hey Stoopid. Another song is a cover of "got a lien on you" from an old 60's band called Phyche. Alice does a terrific job covering the song and also a great job on Jime Hendrix "Fire" which has been released on random albums from A.C

But what makes this album better then just another collection of greats from Alice's recent years (around the time of this) is the live tracks. A freind of mine had this album, and i bought it recenlty mearly for the fact that it contains great rarer songs, and some of the best live versions of songs ive ever heard from Alice!

Some people might not share my opinion , but I have never heard "Balled Of Dwight Fry" sound so fantastic! Espechelly a live version! The sound is excellent and the backing vocals breath new life into the song. This album is great. Dont be put off by the old Alice Cooper band fanatics who dissmiss this stuff because they cant get over the fact Alice went solo. This is a great album and a must have for any fans of all eras of Alice and who love to hear great LIVE songs.

And yes, I would recomend it as a starter if your thinking about buying any of those albums i mentioned before, which are all great and worthy of buying, if you want to sample what those terrific album had on them, then this is only a taste of the great tunes from those master peices from Alice!

5 out of 5 stars Best 'best of' out there !.......2001-03-29

This CD was put together by some Alice fan in Australia, and you can tell. This isn't just a collection of singles and commerciality. This is a collection of great Alice Cooper songs.

Any true Alice fan knows his most intelligent stuff came later on in his life. Last Temptation and Brutal Planet are far more conceptual and fluent than any of his 70's pieces (except Welcome To My Nightmare), and this collection of his 80's and 90's work reflects that Alice did not 'sell out' during the eighties, in fact he matured. People who accuse him of producing simple radio rock in the eighties are either hypocrits or too blind too overlook that Alice has always been radio. I mean, 'Under My Wheels' from 1972 might as well have been performed by Aerosmith !

Okay, some of this does sound 80's influenced, but most of the stuff here is timeless. There are so many rare gems here; Bed Of Nails is one of his dirtiest, heaviest and most overlooked masterpieces (witha real cool goth intro to boot!). Great b-sides like I Got A Line On You are also included. In terms of Heaviness ? This ain't thrash, but in terms of hard rock, it don't come much harder. Okay so some might say it doesn't include Snakebite and there's not much stuff here from The Last Temptation which is a shame, but there is so much great stuff here, it's much harder to pick faults with than his studio picked 'Greatest Hits' of the 70's. Plus the fact The Last Temptation is such a conceptual album, few songs would feel right without the whole album on there as well !

The live cuts must be heard to be believed. Alice always sounds better live, Go To Hell and Ballad Of Dwight Fry reflect this. Pure metal, start to finish, thats what Alice has always been about. Ballad Of Dwight Fry is a really insane song (literally) and this live version is probably the best around. This is without a doubt the best representation of what Cooper is about.

Okay there's no Schools Out, but this album doesn't need it. This album was designed to prove he did equally as good, if not better stuff in the 80's than when in his original band. Poison eclipses anythin he did in the 70's in terms of pure rock. So called Alice purists can just, as Alice would say, 'Go To Hell'. But this CD if you wanna know what Alice is about, you will NOT regret! I never give 5 stars to any CD unless it truly rocks, this does not dissapoint...

3 out of 5 stars Good but no masterpiece.......2001-01-05

This album is a kind of collection, so it's very uneven in its song selection. I prefer ALICE in the 70's. In this album, he's sounding too much like the awful glam bands of the 80's, like Poison and Motley Crue. ( of course he did that to survive and come back to the rock scenario - and fortunately it suceeded ! ). No big deal this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisinlg Good, Given the Usual Standard of This Series.......2004-03-18

The Entertainment Weekly compilation from the year of "Big Brother" is quite possibly the strongest in the series. Sure, there are the obligatory throwaways that each title always has (in this case Ray Parker Jr's annoying "Ghostbusters" and Bananarama's fluffy "Cruel Summer") but this is more than offset but some real pop nuggets including Culture Club's catchy "Karma Chameleon," The Cars lovely "Drive," Hall and Oates blue-eyed soul gem "Out of Touch" and two absolutely gorgeous songs in Eurythmics' "Here Comes the Rain Again," and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" (the later of which has richly earned its status as a pop standard). All in all a good and concise, if somewhat flawed, time capsule of 1984.

    5 out of 5 stars Their Best.......2005-10-19

This cd is most definately their best album, by far. Pick Up The Phone Master P is funny as heck. MY FAVORITE SONG FOR THE ALBUM IS "Girl, Why'd You Run Away", which is their best song ever by far. My Second Favorite is "Your Boyfriend Hates Me" and third is their cover of Raining Blood by Slayer which is brilliant (**plz note that this is only on the re-release), the re-release of this album is alot better, because it has the Lord Of The Bling Trilogy on it, Fellowship Of The Bling is friggin awesome. Overall, this is an outstanding debut, if only their other albums were this good

    5 out of 5 stars incredible........2005-04-01

this cd is amazing, if you like The Get Up Kids, or practically any pop-punk or emo, this is the cd for you. Great sing-a-long cd. The goofy song interludes get kinda old, but still, this is reggie's best. Don't be fooled by the title, it's not that old. The extra songs rock too! The Slayer cover is hilarious and fun. THIS IS A VERY WORTHY BUY. keyboard-driven awesome.

    5 out of 5 stars Very impressive.......2003-12-13

I saw Reggie and the Full Effect open for Alkaline Trio on the Vagrant Tour in Cleveland..They were impressive. I hadn't heard any of their stuff before seeing their performance, but I was immeditaly hooked. Very catchy tunes, lots of onstage energy, and you could just feel the music. They also covered Raining Blood by Slayer which was really cool. Not only are these guys good musicians, but they're FUNNY as hell too! These guys are definatly worth checking out if you're into punk/emo or you just wanna try something new.

4 out of 5 stars For the long trips.......2002-06-04

I love Reggie and the Full Effect. Could there be a greater collaboration of two bands. This cd is almost a continuation of Promotional Copy, though I felt that Promotional Copy was better. There was more rock out songs and less jokes, though the jokes are quite funny and add a certain uniqueness to the album. Every song is completely different and amazing. It is unlike any punk or emo sound out there, it is more of a pop rock sound with some major emo influence and comedy. This is probably true since the Get Up Kids are part of the collaboration. The songs have completely simple words and music but with an awesome intensity. I recommend this cd for anyone who likes to have a good time with their music. Best songs are #2,4,6,11.

5 out of 5 stars IN F-IN FULL EFFECT... yeah...........2001-12-01

Where to start. The demise of coalesce was a loss, but the gain of Reggie and the Full Effect was well worth it. This is the side project of James Deweez, former coalesce drummer and current keyboardist for the Get Up Kids, and he proves his talent extends far beyond those bands. Fun pop rock songs, skits, and break-beats is what Reggie is known for. Greatest Hits 84-87 is definatly one of my top 10 albums of all time.
