5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-04-05

The pipes, like a few other things, are something you either love or hate. If you are not a Scot, they may sound like someone is scalding cats. If you are Scot, or even partly so, they will make your blood boil. This album certanily does that. It has a mix of traditional and more upbeat music. The traditional "Amazing Grace" is fantastic and the last selection is an upbeat Caribbean rendition that is great.

3 out of 5 stars Not just pipes.......2007-02-12

I purchased this CD looking for bagpipe tracks to listen to. The recording of Amazing Grace is flawless, and inspiring. However - much of this CD is the entire band playing more modern music (of course this album was recorded in the 70's). The pipe playing is excellent, but this is not really a bagpipe CD.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Found It!!.......2005-08-03

I have been searching for a CD of this recording for ages! In 1971, when it was originally released, I was 10 years old and couldn't appreciate the album that my brother played endlessly. As I got older I started to miss it. I found a cassette copy several years ago, but am afraid to use it anymore for fear of it breaking. My brother told me he had found a copy of the CD at his local Borders, and since I don't have one in my neighborhood I checked good old Amazon!! I have just ordered and I am looking forward to receiving it. I'm not a music critic, but after hearing many pipe and drum recordings, this has got to be the best I've ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars A thousand horse cavalry charge!.......2005-06-11

I judge bagpipes by Scotland the Brave. This is magnificant; like a thousand horse cavalry charge. The only problem is that, at 45 seconds, it is too short.

It would have been far better if it had been played once on pipes alone and then again with the brass dropped in behind the pipes. A thousand highlanders screaming across the battlefield, followed by the thousand horse cavalry charge. Just thinking about it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand and my blood pressure go through the roof.

This album is magnificent, but it could have been awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Updated Amazing Grace.......2003-05-09

Having reviewed the original "Amazing Grace" recording by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from 1971 it seems that Amazon.com now offers a series of recordings that the bands released in the late 70 and 1980s under the same title. The first half of this CD contains tracks from a 1976 release of the bands entitled "The Lengendary Amazing Grace" In addition to a fine updated version of the now famous tune four years after its original world wide hit, this part of the CD contains some interesting selections for band and pipes. "Una Palma Blanca" is a true example of how the RSDG bands went to great lengths to explore the full combined sound. The regimental band supports the pipes with a variety of modern sounds including an electronic bass guitar which many military bands in fact use for concert purposes today providing as it does a useful Continuo bass line for a military band. "Theme in Glory" and "Turn on the Sun" are additional examples of just how good the RSDG bands had mastered the concept of combing their resources. These are truly exciting pieces to listen too. The regimental band shows its stuff with "Rockout" an arrangement of classic old rock music themes. The pipes and drums provide three medleys and are simply surperb. One can hear that a distinctive change had taken place in the ensemble sound of the pipe band since 1971. The RSDG drummers have incorporated the use of their tenor drums to creat an amazing drummers' accompaniment to the pipes. This innovation would become standard in the piping world, but it owes its origins largely to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards pipes and drums. Listen to how magificent the pipe band sounds when they first enter to the 6/8 medley starting with "Macneils of Ugdale". You won't find a better sound even today. The Retreat medley starting with "Lochanside" is also amazing. Its worth getting the CD just for those tracks as well as the others. Perhaps the most haunting combined tune is an arrangment of Handel's "Largo" with the solo pipes doubling for the voice parts. Truly beautiful and moving.

The second part of the CD contains recordings of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from the later 1970s. The listener will note that there is a subtle, but different recorded sound to the bands. They don't come across quite as clear as in the first 12 tracks on the CD. Again, there is the same rich selection of music with imaginative arrangements and unusual sounds. The regimental band gets highlighted more in these remaining tracks and the same versatility is still there. The "Slave Chorus" from Verdi's "Nabucco Opera" gets an interesting modern treatment. "Moonliner Rock March" is another great arrangement of rock tunes that gets the special Royal Scots Dragoon Guards touch. The pipes and drums are back with several combined medley's as well as two solo displays. The drummers show their stuff in "Drummer's Salute" displaying their modern percussion techniques that are still inspiring today for the pipe band world. All in all a worthy continuation of the "Amazing Grace" tradition that was started in 1971 and carred on since then. It's good to see that some of the many recordings the bands made through the years are now on CD. Enjoy the unique sound of the bands of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who did a lot to popularize Scottish and military band music in general around the world. Truly a legend of "Amazing Grace"

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away.......2006-01-05

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

4 out of 5 stars Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

5 out of 5 stars Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

I loved the music more than the movie. This is truly an add for any collection of Movie Soundtracks or the like. Excellent blend of two cultures in a musical spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning... a disc that will get repeated plays.......2007-01-19

I don't usually listen to soundtracks as they are usually just a grab bag of unrelated songs that don't work so well together as a CD and therefore don't sustain my attention for very long. Some of the exceptions would be Samsara, Himalaya (a stunning CD), Baraka, 1 Giant Leap... and now Nowhere in Africa. There's beautiful symphonies, chanting, drumming, occasional bird sounds, native Africans and other effects that evoke whole range of moods and emotions over this powerful, inspiring and uplifting one hour journey. This academy award winning film really touched my heart and I think a good part of it was the beautiful score that accompanied it.

This is first class music that you will play again and again. If you enjoyed the film, be sure to pick up the soundtrack to Nowhere in Africa. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars JohnnyReviews [Starred-Review].......2003-07-06

>Nowhere In Africa was a breath-taking movie with music that can take you away. This is definately a must-see film. UNBELIVABLE! Now let's get down to the music here, since the product is the soundtack that is being sold here. They have this one voice that sings a song that they play multiple times during the movie. It is made to sound like a child. It goes...

Eee-OOO Ah.
Eee-OOO Ah.
Eee-OOO Aaaaahhhhh.

The sound is just so beautiful. This is the kind of music that is so soothing it could put you right to sleep. But the music is strong and has a message hear of what this family had to go through to survive and what they had lost when their families died when they refused to leave their Nazi Death Chamber. Sad but a must see (and listen)!

5 out of 5 stars "Magnificent score reflects the country ~ Niki Reiser".......2003-05-07

Best Foreign Language Film winner of 2002 from the Academy Award people and nominated by the Golden Globe is "Nowhere in Africa", from director Caroline Link ~ is captivating to say the least. From Nazi Germany one family escapes in 1938 to a new beginning in Kenya ~ from the autobiographical book by Stefanie Zweig is truly an amazing story ~ but wait it only gets better with an award winning score by Niki Reiser, the Swiss Composer who leads the Baset Symphony Orchestra inclusive of sweeping strings and native chants. Very short (less than a minute) tracks of a child singing with harp accompaniment is haunting.

Highlights ~ "NOWHERE IN AFRICA", rhythmic percussion interwoven with the string section, wind instruments join the pulse sating journey ~ "LOVE SCENE", piano solo as strings close in with solace and meditation ~ "JOURNEY THROUGH KENYA", opening sounds of a hoe-down and chants blend within each passage and counter drum beats within the percussion section.

Hats off to Higher Octave Music for sharing this wonderful soundtrack with all the "film-score-buffs" who look forward to unique and global world scores ~ this album will sit on my top shelf for continual enjoyment in the next days and weeks forthcoming.

5 out of 5 stars Home of the Brave.......2002-11-27

This is one of my favorite CD's and I play it over and over. I like the Black Rose song and I also like track # 3. What is it called "Losing It" I think. It also has "It's time to go" which was sung by the old band member, Chris Byrne. This CD is a very good choice. Black Monday is great also.

5 out of 5 stars Before Teenage angst, there was being Irish.......2002-05-18

What happens when some New York City Irish American firefighters feel more like playing Rock n' Roll? You get songs about immirgation at home, oppression back in the old country, lost romances and nights of drinkin' and fightin'. This is a good introduction to the New York-centric music of 'Black 47'. Track 4 is a long overdue musical tribute to the late great Paul Robeson, "The great are only great because we're down on our knees/rise my brothers and sisters/we were born to be free!" You'll find yourself replaying again and again the plantive wail from Track 6, "My black Rose he don't own you, so stay with me tonight...." Track 9 boasts a radio-playable (but don't hold your breath) steady beat and quirky lyrics while Track 12 is a rousing, radical, rebellious rap anthem of a generation fed up.

5 out of 5 stars The Thinking Man/Woman's Punk/Rap/Whatever.......2000-12-07

Not being a punk or rap fan usually, I came to this band reluctantly, lured by the Irish connection and the first number, Big Fella. However, I found myself fascinated by the passion and intelligence of all the offerings. This is not just superficial noise--these songs are articulate, stirring (see Big Fella), very funny (Different Drummer) and perceptive. This is an excellent CD and could make a convert of you as it did of me.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Hip Hop?.......2000-11-30

An excellent album from an excellent band. This is the first Black 47 album I bought and it made me a fan. Mixing a wide variety of styles, from Celtic to Hip-Hop, Black 47 combines a dazzling potpourri of sound with a thoughtful angry punk mentality. The lyrics are also excellent, telling tales both of average people and historical figures. All the tracks are good, standouts are "Big Fella" "Paul Robeson" and "Who Killed Bobby Fuller". One cannot help being moved by the heartfelt Lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......1999-10-06

It's anecdotal and musical. This band puts so much heart in these songs. This CD is terrific!

2 out of 5 stars Not much to it........2007-07-03

THIS CD IS ONLY 34 MINUTES LONG. The track "Radar" is just an annoying bit of noise. That leaves about 32 minutes of actual music. It is hardly worth the price.

Released in 1986, this is from the movie "Home of the Brave" which was a collection of performances. Much of that had been covered on other Anderson CD releases. So, she wasn't left with much more to release. Like almost all of Anderson's CD's the sound quality is very good.

The CD starts out very good. Smoke Rings is an amusing piece with some excellent music backing it up. The CD continues with more bits of some very good music.

The problem is that some of the tracks sound like snippets taken from larger pieces. So the whole CD does not play very well.

The version of Sharkey's Night is also not very good.

So, if you start with a 34 minute CD, throw out 2 and a half minutes of noise (Radar) and some of the little snippets of music hear and there and an inferior Sharkey's Night, you end up with about 25 minutes of good music.

There's not much to it, but I really, really like the good parts. Some parts rate up there with the best of Anderson. It's just that there isn't much of it.

2 out of 5 stars Avoid the CD!.......2006-10-12

OK, I figure if you're looking at this CD, you're a Laurie Anderson fan and can recall at least twice you've seen her great concert movie, likely at a midnight showing back in the 80's. Well, if you're that person, avoid the utter heartbreak which is this CD. I counted 18 tracks from my old VHS copy of this concert, while only 8 made it to the CD. The banter between tracks is omitted entirely. The tracks are out of order (OK, small nitpick), and it's certainly not worth the effort. I'm sorry, Laurie, but Warner scr-wed you hard on this one.

On the up side, the sound quality is good, certainly better than my VHS. But hey, this is a concert film soundtrack, but apparently they forgot to include the second disk. Laurie fans will be livid. (Others merely confused! :)

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATS.......2006-07-17

What an utterly charming and delightful film! This is Laurie Anderson at her peak. At this time, her emerging visions in her music, her performance art, and her perspective on pop culture all came together to form a Laurie-world that is engrossing, rich, quirky, and bound to make you smile. I think that OUR world has lost something since then. It is hard to imagine "Home of the Brave" being made in todays jaded, degraded, and "extreme" culture. I also love this film because it happened in an era when new musics were emerging from grass roots sources, and the record companies had to adapt themselves to these new movements. That may have been the last time that such a thing will happen in this manufactured-to-sell musical environment. This film NEEDS to go to DVD, as it is one of the five essential concert films of this wonderful time in music. The others are:
Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads
Big Time by Tom Waits
Judgement Day by Diamanda Galas
Blazing Away by Marianne Faithful

3 out of 5 stars One of Anderson's best.......2005-12-08

Mister Heartbreak is Laurie Anderson'e best release, closely followed by Home of the Brave , and then Big Science. On HOTB it is Late Show's blend of rhythm, synth and sax which really shines, though Language is a Virus is very good- with very funny poke at 'tv people'.

I have never seen the movie , and IT IS A CRYING SHAME THAT NO DVD OF HOME OF THE BRAVE IS AVAILABLE -SO COME ON WARNER BROTHERS! GET IT SORTED!

5 out of 5 stars "And the florist says...'white lily'".......2004-09-04

this is definitely my favorite Laurie album ever. It contains eight selections from her 1986 film "Home of the Brave" which i'm trying to get a copy of to no avail. laurie is at her most dynamic, kinetic, rhythmic, and colorful here. Highlights for me include Smoke Rings, White Lily, Language is a Virus, and most of all her live film rendition of Sharkey's Night which is much more cutting vibrant and altogether beautiful. :) you definitely want to pick this one up soon.

The Sheryl Crow song that opens this soundtrack, "Try Not to Remember," sets the tone: slow, moody. The CD follows it up with two Middle Eastern-themed tracks ("The Battle Ends" and "Opening Iraq"), which establish the movie's departure point—the Iraq war. But Home of the Brave isn't so much about war as it is about what happens when soldiers return home, and so the overall musical feeling is more thoughtfully somber (think low-key clarinets, muted horns, delicately picked acoustic guitars) than action-packed brash--even "The Chase" is a lot more subdued that tracks with that title tend to be. It all gets a little samey after a while, and so the best moments are those when composer Stephen Endelman inserts Middle Eastern touches--as in "The Kitchen," "What We're Thankful For" or "All Hell Broke Loose"--to signify the shadow that looms over the movie. Middle Eastern chanting spookily comes back bookend the album on "Return to Iraq." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Album Description

Martha Redbone's debut album "Home Of The Brave" is a stunning collection of songs that heralds the arrival of a true heavyweight singer/songwriter in the fashion of a Stevie Wonder or a young Prince. Weaving tales of love lost and found ("Say You Love Me", "Someday We'll Be Friends" ,"Liar") with reflections on life's struggles ("Vineyard", "Underdog", "Perfect Life") and how we cope in the modern world ("Free", "Sarsaparilla") Martha Redbone finds ways to make us laugh and cry, think and sigh. Her uniquely flexible voice, reminiscent of soul legends Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan one minute and song stylists like Sly Stone or Annie Lennox the next is truly captivating and is perfectly balanced by the warm and human production, that relies as much on great musicianship as it does beats and bleeps, giving this album a highly original sound - both retro cool and ultra modern all at the same time.

The depth of intelligence and humanity displayed by Martha is only matched by her wit and energy. This is an album you will listen to time and time again always finding new ideas…… and better dance moves! A wondrous achievement.

    5 out of 5 stars A great album!.......2007-05-16

Martha Redbone is a breath of fresh air! Every song a gem! Martha can be soulful or sophisticated. The arrangements are inovative and fresh, in fact the whole album has an air of creativity, each song having it's own particular theme and pace. Full credit to the musicians and the producer, who did the songs, and Martha's wonderful voice, justice!

    5 out of 5 stars DON'T STOP THE MUSIC.......2004-01-12

MARTHA REDBONE'S debut CD HOME OF THE BRAVE is a must add to your music collection. She's a songwriter, producer, and songtress. This woman is multi-talented and after listening to the CD, you'll understand why. She has a very soulful voice. It's hard to categorize her into one genre, so I'll say she's a neo-soul, pop, R & B singer,

SAY YOU LOVE ME, BOYFRIEND and UNDERDOG are my favorite cuts on the CD.
Don't let a good thing past you by, get HOME OF THE BRAVE and relax after a long week.

5 out of 5 stars Betcha By Golly WOW.......2003-10-11

This album blows my mind, it's on constant loop on my walkman. It's everything I want. Miss Redbone you are a true inspiration. Your voice is like honey. And the songs! Ohmigod! You're speaking to my life. I love, love , love this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!.......2002-03-16

`Home of the Brave', Martha Redbone's debut album is a hit. She has a unique soulful voice and the beats are catchy. I found myself replaying the songs in my head for days. Even with its upbeat tempo, Martha's lyrics are deep and full of meaning. She sings about love, heartbreak, being the `underdog', and life in general. She shows her funky and fun side with the song `Boyfriend'. `Boyfriend' is a humorous song about falling in love with a gay man. It is definitely a song worth listening to. The anthem song, `Underdog' fills your heart with the will to go on, it allows you to let past failure roll off your shoulder. `Liar', my personal favorite, portrays the sting of heartbreak and loneliness. This is definitely one of those CDs that you play all the way through; it has a very sweet flow. I haven't found a song on the album that I would choose to skip over. Her voice is sweet candy to the ear. You will not be able to stop yourself from bopping to the beat. She knocks the socks off Macy Gray. I recommend this album to everyone with a taste for good music. Martha Redbone will be a household name, mark my words.

    5 out of 5 stars Birth of a Superstar.......2002-03-01

Martha Redbone's debut is very simply the best album I've bought in years. Reminiscent of some of the classic albums of all time like "Songs In The Key Of Life" and "Purple Rain" this artist has it all. Her voice ranges from a sexy whisper to a cathartic roar, a jazzy inflection to a soaring high note, she will surely be ranked alongside Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and Mary J as one of the great soul singers,.But unlike most young singers she writes great songs. Instantly memorable, beautifully constructed songs that touch on every area of life, from the anthemic "Underdog" an exorcism of life's struggles to the witty riposte to a rich man of "Vineyard" (classic line "So what I'm poor and fertile"!) to a gorgeous and intelligent approach to dying in "Heaven" this girl writes. Love songs from a unique angle, subtle poiltics and at times truly funny stories..this is not your dad's RnB or your current factory product this is the future. The music is deep and textured displaying the influence of everything that's come before it be that 70's soul, Nirvana, hiphop, the Beatles, Miles Davis (check out the hidden bonus track!) and moulding it into a new form, beyond neo-soul, beyond pop (in the great sense of the word) and into a head knodding, butt shaking, brain tweaking musical landscape populated by musicians and even some machines, the perfect blend of old and new!
Martha Redbone will undoubtedly become a household name, I'd get in there early.

5 out of 5 stars One Listen and You'll Know They Rock.......2004-07-25

I bought this cd about a month ago, and am now totally satisfied. I actually bought it at the Family Store, and listened to it once. After like 3 weeks, i went back to listen to it and realized what i was missing. It did take another listen to realize it was totally awesome. I listened to it like a week straight in my car. It is a lot different compared to Five Iron Frenzy. Five Iron Frenzy is Ska/ rock. Brave Saint Saturn is pure rock, with some effects. It was the best $3 i spent.

5 out of 5 stars Canadian Bagpipes American Brass.......2003-11-11

I recently ordered and have just received the above mentioned album.
    THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.

    3 out of 5 stars Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07

This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.

    4 out of 5 stars Track Recommendation.......2000-11-07

Oops. No review of my own is complete without track recommendation. My first pick from the album is Over You Over Me Survivor-styled uptempo pop rock. Among Jim Peterik collaborated tracks Just One Touch, reminding me of early Survivor ballads impressed me most.

Ride Of Your Life is outstanding uptempo rocker reminding me a bit of Can't Give It Up of Too Hot Sleep with some 38 Special vibe to it. Outlaw sounds like the combination of Starship and Survivor. Helpless is a bit heavy track reminding me of early Foreigner.

3 out of 5 stars Heir To Survivor.......2000-11-04

I am a big fan of Survivor and searched the whole world for Survivor like band. While there are lots of bands who claim to be Journey heir(such as Two Fires, Hugo and Departure I already reviewed), no bands so far convinced me as Survivor vain.

Four-man Chicago band Captive Heart is definitely heir to the Survivor style, emulating deftly the keyboard style, catchy arrangement and chorus work which is the trademark of Survivor sound.

While I like their sound instatnly I gave them three stars because they still leave a lot to be desired. If they are still around, I hope they listen to Norway, Hugo and Departure I raved in my reviews and they will see what I mean.

Jim Peterik co-wrote three tracks Just One Touch, Heartache, and Ride Of Your Life. Recommended for Journey, Survivor, Hugo, Departure, Norway and Two Fires fans.
