Product Description
Special edition of 2005 album with deluxe book. BRMC are Peter Hayes, Robert Turner and Nick Jago. For a while there, drummer Nick Jago's future in the band was in jeopardy, but now everyone has made up and have joined forces to make a triumphant return with a new single, album and UK dates. This, their third album, is the first album for the Echo Label following their departure from Virgin Records. BRMC's hellish past two years have been well documented. Their label pulled support for the band's sophomore album. Fingers were pointed, ties with management were severed, legal wrangling ensued. BRMC subsequently found itself without a record label and sat on the sidelines while other members of the class of 2000 like the Strokes and White Stripes plowed full steam ahead. Those who expect a scabrous indictment of the music industry will no doubt be surprised by the rather subdued direction of the band's new material. Rather than rev up the guitars and stoke the flames, the band has instead cut a mostly acoustic album, one that skirts their muscular update of shoegaze in favor of warm, primitive blues. Howl also happens to be the first album that overtly ties the band to their hometown of San Francisco--as the Allen Ginsberg-influenced title suggests. Turner has said that Howl is intended as a tribute to the city's Beat generation. Echo. 2005.

A very subjective review as I have been a fan since Bohinta released their first issue of the "Sessions" album in about 1995, however comparing with an extensive cd collection including artists such as Van Morrison, Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, John Martyn and others, I would put this solo debut on the same level as Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left". Jazzy feels remeniscent of John Martyn's "Inside Out" (which won the Montreaux Jazz Festival gold record award) compliment irish traditional instruments to make an album which, although goes for almost an hour, leaves me wanting more (which is unusual as I usually find albums drag on a bit when they get past about the 40 minute mark). Check out Bohinta's work too, a much under-appreciated group, but for me this album is the pick of the lot.
