3 out of 5 stars A (re)mixed bag with some awesome highlights.......2003-03-26

Followers of regular Numan output will appreciate some of the tracks here. Folks completely new to Numan's genius should look elsewhere (try Pure, Exile or Sacrifice). This album is not so much remixes, but rather re-workings of some classic and more recent Numan songs. For the most part Numan has re-recorded the vocal track and let a few 'names' from the music biz re-work/re-arrange the song. Some tracks work (Dominion Day, Rip) and others' don't (Me! I Disconnect From You, Cars). The real tease in potentially buying this CD are the 3 new tracks. Hybrid is actually a mashing together of different parts of the song Pure, so really doesn't qualify as a new song. However, Crazier and Ancients are new and are so worth the cover price alone. If it means anything, I've been a Numan fan since '79 and I think Ancients is one of the best songs Numan's ever done. It's electronics meets (restrained) industrial meets a 36 piece orchestra (honestly!). A ballad with a menacing edge! Crazier will be released as a single in the UK in May '03, so that should indicate it's commercial and wider audience appeal. It's a great track too.

1 out of 5 stars Forget that album!.......2003-03-18

The worst album the master of new wave have ever made!
If you like noisy remixes of longtime know tracks from a - nevertheless - great musician, buy it!
If you like GOOD music buy Numan's other stuff, but not that!
Sorry, Gary, you've done many albums better than this!

4 out of 5 stars Great re-mixes.......2003-02-21

The remixes, with only two exceptions, are great. I have been a fan of Gary Numan since 1980 and have a large collection of CD's, tapes and albums. This CD is definitely worth adding to a Gary Numan music collection. The rework of Pure and Dominion Day are awesome. The new song Crazier is good but Ancients is better. Hope this helps.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Without doubt a classic.......2006-10-09

Hybrid, perhaps the finest breakbeat production team around, were supposed to smash into the U.S. market with their first album WIDE ANGLE in 2000. Sadly due to distribution problems the album was delayed in the US and so much well-placed advertising went to waste. Happily, Hybrid succeeded in releasing the album, renaming it WIDER ANGLE because of the inclusion of a second disc chronicling the Hybrid live experience. If this album appeals to you, the two-disc set is very recommended.

Sometimes a reviewer has no choice but to repeat blurbs. On the slipcase Ed Potton of The Times/Metro calls WIDE ANGLE "one of the most moving pieces of electronic music ever." He's totally right. Hybrid began by using traditional breakbeat production but transformed it into something totally original and novel by bringing in strings, here provided by the Russian Federal Orchestra conducted by Sacha Pullman. The vibrant sonorities of something rarely hear in breakbeat add colour and cinematic grandeur to the album that brings it to greater heights than any electronica album I had heard before.

WIDE ANGLE from a production viewpoint is wonderfully consistent and not a single track fails to entertain. The high points of the album, however, are pure emotion. "If I Survive" is sweeping with its breaks and perfectly placed strings. "Theme from Wide Angle" is a non-stop electronic parade. Perhaps the most spiritual experience on WIDE ANGLE is "Finished Symphony." It will sound familiar to those who had heard Hybrid's "Symphony" on the East Coast disc of Sasha and John Digweed's NORTHERN EXPOSURE II mix, but this version is performed with a real orchestra and has combined the best of live recording and studio editing.

WIDE ANGLE is such an original and polished release that I would recommend it to any fan of electronic music. It's been over five years now since I encountered this album, and in the time since I've lost interest in most electronic music I was once passionate about, but WIDE ANGLE continues to impress me as much as it ever did.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2005-07-17

I remember buying this CD a year or more ago. Wow. In my opinion, the orchestration and the way it is incorporated into Hybrid's music to this day still stands out as beautifully as it did the first time I listened through it. Not only is every song fresh and filled with energy, but gorgeous and intelligent all at the same time. The only way I can describe this album is that it gives off almost a silky, futuristic vibe. Often times fast electronic music (in any sub-genre) feels stupid, and is only fit for clubs, if even that. But this music rises far above that and still manages to sound brilliant. To add to how wonderful this CD is, the bonus disk is not just a "Bonus disk"-- it is basically a standalone album itself, being 74 minutes long. The first 6 tracks are all live, and all great. Thankfully the crowd does not interfere with the sound or feel of the performance, I rather like to think that it adds to it. I love this CD.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "If I survive, I'll tell on you.".......2005-05-05

If you only hear one trance album in your life make it Hybrid's Wider Angle. Wider Angle takes most of the songs off of the general release Wide Angle and throws it into the blender. This orchestrated trance album is simply brilliant. Most songs are instrumental, and the ones that are not are all sung perfectly by Julee Cruise, simply her best work. They brought that great voice to life and then some. Let me tell you my five favorites off of this great record. 1)If I Survive: At just under 9 minutes, this song rocks. With its wicked beats and its pissed off singing by Julee Cruise, get ready to be blown away. 2)Beachcoma: This instrumental is the kind of music I believe the great classical composers would have made had they had synthesizers in their day. It starts slowly then builds to the most orgasmic music ever made, alot like symphonies. 3)High Life: Another song brilliantly sung by Julee. Play this one loud.4)Sinenquanon: Like the song title, there is no way to describe this song, except to hear it. It has a male voice overdubbing a killer beat, and he doesn't make a damn bit of sense, but who cares, blast it and surrender. 5) Kill City: This is a perfect soundtrack cut. It is dying to made into a video game or the latest graphic novel come to life. Awesome.
Buy this record, and you will understand the power of Hybrid.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2003-03-05

My first exposure to Hybrid was their stirring "Finished Symphony" in the video game "SSX Tricky". I then knew that I had to get more. Everything I've listened to by them I've loved. One of my favorite new artists.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely top class.......2002-10-25

Three tracks on these CDs hit a real soft spot for me, being blindingly emotional, technically fantastic, extremely intelligent and absolutely inspiring. They are If I Survive, Finished Symphony and Kid 2000 are all tracks of the highest of music calibre, the rest are simply fantastic too.

If you like any form of emotional electronic music, and you haven't bought this album, you are missing out. Words cannot describe how great this album is - if you're reluctant about liking 'electronic' music, give this a chance, it'll blow your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Listen to Shirley from New York's review!.......2003-03-03

Hybrid is amazing. Shirley from New York said that the album stinks but come on! How can a group stink when they infuse classical, jazz and hip-hop with electronic music? Give me a break!

I promise to anyone that buys this album...you'll absoultely fall in love with it.

Hybrid is the best band in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Wide Angle, motion picture in music.......2001-01-11

Hybrid's Wide Angle sounds like images reflected in dark wet plate glass. Heavy, swirling with mood, pulsing with chrome breakbeats and coursing with violet and blue keyboard tones, shining brass guitar strings curl like bright shavings in the deep space of bass. The more you turn it up the better it gets, pouring out, wrapping you in velvet sound. The work as a whole is a sountrack, complete with beginning and end titles, check it out -- this is the kind of music that conjures images and emotion.

1 out of 5 stars This album stinks!!!!!!!!!.......2000-12-21

Nothing new, nothing different. Reviews of this band say how great they are- don't belive the hype! If you want to listen to a band who knows how to make amazing electronic music try: Orbital. 0 out of 5 stars. F-

      5 out of 5 stars unbound.......2000-07-08

Being a decks drums groove boxes racks synth samplers midi techno junkie, I'd have to say that this disk is one of the most technically and aurally impressive purchases i've ever made! US West Coast Breakbeat can't even hold a candle to this trancy, melodic, energetic, and unique blend of sounds and rhythyms. From this day on, I'm shelving my SP808 and picking up a bunch of string session players.

      5 out of 5 stars Hybrid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-05-24

Hybrid does it again, this time with a live orchestra overlaying there normal bada$$ beats and basslines, with slight over tones of trance. Hybrid by far is the most innnovative band around these days, only them can develop there own genre. If your sick of the same bull$hit dance tunes and want to hear some music thats cutting edge and breaking barriers then this cd is a must get, but if you want the same damn boring sounds that you hear in a club all the time, then go elsewhere, this cd is for the masses who want to experience something new and completely different, absolutely the best cd of the year.
