4 out of 5 stars Do that dance!.......2002-09-27

From New Orleans, comes this cool cutter funk disc. This septet never made any super hits like Superfreak or Boogie Wonderland but they created alot of heat between the years of 1974 and 1985.
Produced by funk doctor Alan Toussaint (he produced many of the Meter's first albums), you won't be able to stand still. The drums are hard and the horns and the vocals are too sweet, especially on Actions Speak Louder Than Words and Take It Off.Let the good times roll.

4 out of 5 stars Louder Than Words!!.......2001-08-23

This is a great CD for the real Funk and Soul music lovers!! "Action Speaks Louder Than Words", "Groove City", "Girl Callin", and "Say Won't Cha" are definitely solid jams on here. Eventhough their music was not as popular as other Funk, R&B and Soul groups, their cuts are just as, and in some cases, better, than the more popular radio funk hits!! You can actually feel these songs. They are not watered down nor commercially dry.

4 out of 5 stars a good funk band.......2000-02-06

i really dig Groovy city and especially Girl callin.this band was funky.i remember the first time i heard girl callin i was like who is that? that guitar hook was smooth.

4 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL.......1999-10-05

This is a very good old school group! I would like to see if anymore of their music is available on cd! I especially love the songs "Groove City, and How About Love! I really had a hard time finding any music for this group!

This son of the legendary Mississippi blues giant doesn't have his father's aura of brooding mystery, raw baritone voice, or choogling guitar style, yet he is an original nevertheless. On the follow-up to his 2004 Grammy-nominated Blues with a Vengeance, the laconic singer and lyricist mixes straight-up Chicago blues and smooth Southern soul with flourishes of funk and contemporary R&B. He's not an outright modernist; the traditional rhythms and horn charts see to that. Nonetheless, in the medley "Four Hours Straight/Blues Man" and "Got to Be Me," Hooker's nearly rapping. And references to text messaging and the couplet "her sexual modus operandi was that of a freak / it was so addictive it would make you tweak" could work for OutKast. Of course, there are nods to his father, like the touching reminiscence "Do Daddy (Requiem for John Lee Hooker)" and a lackluster reading of his "In the Mood." But the junior Hooker seems determined to make a name for himself, rather than merely capitalize on Dad's. --Ted Drozdowski

4 out of 5 stars The unique can't be rated after a quick listen.......2006-09-12

This is the second time a John Lee Hooker Jr. CD has me hooked - but it took a few listens. This ain't his father's blues, and deliberately so. John Lee Jr.'s lyric take, his mix of blues, jazz, Motown and R&B are no less than brilliant to me. It honestly took a dozen listens to grasp it all. That alone is worth the buy. Thinking man's music - for the masses. Yes, brilliant!

2 out of 5 stars "Jr." - Maybe, "John Lee Hooker" - NOT!.......2006-06-28

Amazon uses the word "lackluster" to describe one song on this on this CD, but it can be used to describe the entire CD. While Jr can sing, he sounds bored while singing these songs... somewhat like Tone Loc, heavily sedated, doing a bad John Lee Hooker impersonation. To his credit, Jr did try to make the genre his own, and not just be a young version of dad.

However please keep in mind that, as a HUGE fan of John Lee Hooker, I may have just been expecting too much out of Jr.

4 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL ICE - T.......2004-06-10

Old Old School Ice!, January 11, 2004
Reviewer: Scotty from United Kingdom
I bought this CD originally for 2 trax.Tibetan Jam and Reckless.
These were missing from my Ice T collection and were apparrently electro classics, a scene I remember from my teenage years.
The other trax on the disc were welcome bonuses.Killers is an early example of message rap in a similar vein to Grandmaster Flash and of course the classic 6 'N The Mornin',perhaps the original gangsta rap tune, is here in its original form.
The only weak link in the collection is the mix at the end which is why I rated 4 stars.
All in all a good collection of early to mid-eighties Ice T.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone slept on this man.......2005-08-07

This album is a weapon. I'm sure if he would've had the right buzz, alot of these rappers would've been in trouble. I'd bet any amount of money that this Canadian artist can take the majority of todays hottest NY rappers to the hole in a freestyle battle. Its a shame how this man got no buzz over here in the east. This album will be considered a classic to me.

4 out of 5 stars Great Canadian Artist!.......2004-08-21

Choclair has got some hot tracks on here such as "Lets Ride" "Rubbin" "Jambone". The beats are off the hook and you can just pop it in and let it play till the end (with the exception of skipping the skits and a couple tracks). His style is one of a kind, if I was to compare it to other artists I would say Nas but less lyrical genius.

INTRO - Didnt really need an intro, "ICE COLD" would have been a great 1st track to the album.

        ROLLIN - 4 of 5

        YOUNG GUNZ - 3 1/2 of 5 (I didnt like memphis bleek's verse)

        RUNNIN WID US - 4 1/2 of 5

        FLAGRANT - 3 1/2 of 5

I recommend this album to anyone who loves Hip Hop, a decent album to complement your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Choclair- Ice Cold.......2003-06-20

Choclair's (Kareem Blake) "Ice Cold" is a decent album from one of Canada's well known rappers. Albums lead single is "Let's Ride" a track where Choclair comes out strong to a sick beat. This is a good upbeat party track. "Rubbin" feat. Saukrates is a track about the ladies, and getting laid. Gangstarr's well known Guru drops in for "Bare Witness" and Solitair drops in for "Fresh", both are decent collab tracks. "Rollin" Feat. Jully Black is a nice track, where Choclair talks to his haters, and shows love to his people, really like Jully Blacks vocals on this one. Rocafella's Memphis Bleek drops in on "Young Gunz" a track with a funkfied beat, which has both MCs coming out well. "Running' Wid Us" feat. Kardinal Offishal is a hardcore track, where Choc and Kardinal rep TO nicely. Not every track is banging on this album, and at times I found myself a bit frustrated with it, in that it doesnt delve very deep, and Choclairs flow and lyrics become monotonous at times. Guest appearances thankfully strengthen the album up a bit more. It was good to see a Canadian MC get signed to a major american label (Virgin) at the same time though I think "Ice Cold" could of been a more solid release, and Choclair could have come out more original and dropped an album to remember.

5 out of 5 stars Chiznock comes through with his solo debut!.......2003-02-14

"Wow!" sums it up nicely. With an instant hit 'let's ride', choclair follows with a solid continuation on his album. Canadian hip hop fans listen up. Choclair has one of the most original styles in hip hop today, with a truly hip hop sound and production. With guest appearences by Guru, Saukrates, Solitaire, Rascalz, Kardinal and Memphis Bleek to assist in making a dent in Canadian hip hop history. Note worthy tracks are 'lets ride', 'rubbin', 'jambone', 'bare witness', 'young gunz' and 'da chiznock'.. yet all tracks are sick! trust me, you will not get sick of this cd. if you like gangstarr, rascalz or kurupt, you'll love choclair and ice cold. A well deserved 5 Star performance by Chocleezy.

1 out of 5 stars Too Iced Out For His Own Good.......2001-10-30

Although patriotic Canadians are inclined to promote the lyrical stylings of Choclair, "Ice Cold" is dead-on-arrival. Supposedly once Canada's most promising MC, Choclair has regressed into a world where money, women, and cars are the order of the day - "Let's Ride" is a prime example of this mentality. Choclair's misogynistic words have done nothing to endear him to feminists such as urban scribe Liz Mendez Berry. After striking out with both this album and Kardinal Offishall's "Firestarter...", it's seemingly up to Saukrates to see whether or not the acclaim heaped upon their collective (The Circle) is well-deserved or self-promotion. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
