If there is one album that epitomizes Chicago's early rock-jazz synthesis along with their consummate, Top 40 instincts, this is it. Filled with memorable songs, impressive instrumental showcases, and great vocal performances, Chicago II displays the rock & brass ensemble at their early peak. Including classics like "Colour My World" and "25 or 6 to Four," this recording presents sparkling performances from three equally brilliant singers. The voices of Robert Lamm, Peter Cetera, and the late Terry Kath combined with particularly precise horn arrangements and exacting production by James William Guercio make this collection particularly noteworthy. Songs like "Make Me Smile" were swinging musical dramas with infectious singing and bold, melodic hooks. Recorded in 1969, II was musically progressive and exceptionally pop savvy. Led Zeppelin II is an album of Jimmy Page riffs so huge, and John Paul Jones/John Bonham rhythms so deep, that the heavy metal genre this classic helped create has tried for decades to catch up, mostly without success. And no wonder: since II catches the band before they'd headed too far into their ridiculous medieval fancies, this might be as good as Zep would ever be. Regardless, the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love," a Top 5 hit, and "Bring It on Home" are very nearly as fierce and twisted as British white blues would ever get. --David Cantwell

Zep II finds the band still tapping the primordial riff mine that page opened up in their debut. this is still super tight bluesy hard rock focused on sex and relationships, preceding the more eclectic and experiment zep 3 & physical graffiti.

from whole lotta love to bring it on home, there's not a weak song in the group. page's irresistable riffs -- the dna for countless future metal and hard rock bands -- plant's howling wolf cum celtic hippy wail, backed by the rock-solid rhythm section of bonham/jones, makes this one of their best. just when you think they are slipping in the slow start to the album's final track, page, bonham and jones kick in with a thundering sound that reminds you what is great about rock n roll.

5 out of 5 stars As hard-rocking as it gets. Led Zeppelin's best album........2007-05-28

Led Zeppelin's second album is sure to please all music fans of any genre. Led Zeppelin II, released in the same year as the first album in 1969, is as hard-rocking as it gets when it comes to Zeppelin. All nine tracks are Led Zeppelin at their best, whether it's world-renowned blues rock ("Whole Lotta Love"), racing guitar play ("Heartbreaker"), or awesome, creative drum solos ("Moby Dick"). This album is a representative of late-60s rock, and I find it quite similar to Axis Bold As Love, by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The album starts to amaze you with the recognizable blues-rocker "Whole Lotta Love," which has a creative interlude consisting of distorted radio waves; after said song, Zeppelin attempts to cool you down a bit with the bluesy ballad "What is and What Should Never Be," which, like "The Rain Song" from the Houses Of The Holy album, is where you'll find Robert Plant's vocals at their peak. This is followed by "The Lemon Song," which actually sounds like something Jimi Hendrix would play. "Thank You" is also a very nice Led Zeppelin song and is a very easy listen. The album's turning point is at track five, which happens to be the instant rocker "Heartbreaker". It's definately one of the band's greatest songs, and Jimmy Page is at his best in it. The hard-rocking Sabbath-like main riff is a great combination with John Bonham's rapid drumming, and the solo is easily one of the best of all time, as it is not only awesome and awestriking, but it was improvised; that proves Page can ad-lib his way through solos and STILL make it sound good. "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)" is also a very easy listen, and quite catchy at that. "Ramble On," yet another acoustic song, also contains great vocals and guitar playing. "Moby Dick" is probably where drummer John Bonham is putting forth his best effort, as the song starts out with a guitar and drum combination and then drops into a complete drum solo where at first, Bonham plays with his hands, and about two and a half minutes into the song he picks up the sticks and delivers a heavy rain of thunderous drumming. The outro of the song is when Jimmy Page comes in again and finishes it off with John, making the song a very powerful instrumental. The last song, "Bring it on Home," is very convenient for the album, as it first leaves you with a blues impression, but later picks up in a hard rock style, just as Zeppelin would do. Overall, Led Zeppelin's second album is what I think is the crown jewel in their albumography. Whenever you get the chance, buy it--you'll be pleasently surprised.

Led Zeppelin II (1969) Led Zeppelin's second studio album.

Led Zeppelin had already shocked audiences with their controversial cover art and amazing blues-rock earlier in 1969, and later that same year they would churn out another classic album. "Led Zeppelin II" is one of the finer in their catalog, being the epitome of what Jimmy Page does best; sick and sexy blues riff-rock.

The first track is one of their most (in)famous songs, "Whole Lotta Love". A very slow-driving head-banging tune with a riff partly lifted from Willie Dixon. Page and the crew also drop crazy riffs on "Living Loving Maid", "Ramble On", and "Heartbreaker". Plant's vocals soar wildly on "What is and What Should Never Be" and "The Lemon Song" as Bonham blasts his beloved bass drum on each and every cut. What makes this album better than their debut is that it fully developed their sound. "I" had done a fairly good job of that, but "II" cut the pure blues-based pieces and instead gave it a more definitive rock edge.

As on all of the remasters, the sound quality is excellent. "II" is about on par with the original vinyl, and to untrained ears will sound just as good. This is an excellent place to start with Led Zeppelin, if not for the opening track alone. However, I would recommend to start with "Led Zeppelin IV" before coming to this gem. "II" is a cut that every classic/hard/blues/whatever rock fan should own.

I had been hearing Train's rendention of "Ramble On" on the Howard Stern Show, and I loved it. So I decided to get the original version from Led Zeppelin. I'm not disappointed. As fabulous as Train's, but more authentic with Robert Plant singing it. The CD also has great hits like "Whole lotta Love", "What is and what should never Be", & "Living Loving Maid (she's just a woman)". Worth the price.

I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.

Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.

its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.

I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.

Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics

These synthesizer versions of classical songs get really old, really fast. Worse yet, the songs are sometimes not soothing at all, especially the very first song. The song seems to get particularly loud and uptempo, which is precisely what you don't expect in a lullaby. Please listen to the sample of the first song at least before you buy.

This CD worked great to put my daughter to sleep while I rocked her in my arms, and I enjoyed the choices of songs and the arrangements. However, I would have preferred that real instruments were used.

At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short and playing it safe for the trappings of fame, Stewart revisits the font of his latest career revival here. But while 2002's It Had To Be You at least turned on the novelty of hearing raspy Rod the Mod tackle a slate of American pop standards with a boozy, world-weary tone that sometimes reinforced the originals' intent with trans-generational flair, the British rock icon unfortunately reverted to form a year later on this 14-track sequel. Set against the laconic, cocktail-friendly productions of vets Richard Perry and Phil Ramone, Stewart's performances seem strangely detached throughout. Even when offered the chance at some real human interaction on a pair of ill-conceived duets with Cher (who at least attempts to bring some dramatic flair to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered") and Queen Latifah (whose recent turn in Chicago informs the title track), Stewart seems almost blissfully unaware of their presence. These are songs that virtually demand to be acted out, not phoned in. Brilliant vocal performances often reinforce the notion of "the singer, not the song;" here that old adage sounds more like a suggestion of where to place the blame for this album's disappointments. --Jerry McCulley

I finally called Amazon and they refunded my money. Amazon is a stand up company; just don't get envolved with and of there sub companys.

I've since ordered many things from Amazon and usually can't believe how fast they get things to me.

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

It wouldn't be accurate to call this a live album. It's really more like an album that was recorded (mostly) in front of a live audience and HEAVILY edited. It sounds like a live album, though. Basically, Steve Vai has taken seven complete performances and, for each section, phrase, or sometimes even single note of all seventeen songs, chosen the most perfect of the seven. He then pasted all of these most favorable parts together to make one perfect whole. This is especially remarkable considering that Steve had to deal with the different sound ambiences of different venues.

In the liner notes, Steve writes that the two-part piece "Frangelica" has hundreds of edits, while other tracks (he doesn't specify which ones) have very few. It's fascinating reading how he carefully listened to each note of each instrument and replaced any less-desirable notes with notes from other performances or even from other sections of music. In some cases, when no "right notes" (defined by Steve as notes that were played with the correct pitch, phrase, confidence, and attitude) were available, he would try to "re-fabricate" the notes in the studio or take them out altogether. Only perfection is heard on this album!

I know it's an overused word, but Vol. I (entitled "The Aching Hunger") is brilliant! Each track on this disc showcases Steve's exceptional guitar work in completely refreshing ways. The old songs, with the backing of the Holland Metropole Orkest, often seem entirely new. There's a lot of newly composed material on this disc, too... all of it beautiful. The highlight here, in my opinion, is the perfectly arranged "Salamanders in the Sun," originally from the album Flex-Able.

Steve, as a guitarist, gives the impression that he has the ability to translate through his guitar absolutely anything that enters his head. It's always been amazing to hear Steve perform his most complex passages note-for-note, accurately and exactly as intended. With these new versions of the songs, we hear other instruments keep up with him note-for-note, as well. Even knowing that these performances have been highly edited, it's evident that Steve and the orchestra played amazingly tight together!

Personally, Vol. II (entitled "Shadows and Sparks") isn't nearly as accessible for me. It's without Steve's true expressive voice, his guitar, and frankly the compositions here aren't quite as brilliant (they are still very good, though). It's interesting and different and incredibly complex.

In addition to traditional orchestral instruments, there is often more eccentric instrumentation used. Saxophone, Moog synthesizer, electric guitar (not played by Steve), bass guitar, what sounds like at least one drum set, and even a referee-type whistle are commonly heard. This makes the Holland Metropole Orkest able to have a chameleon-like sound. It often resembles a traditional symphony orchestra, but sometimes it sounds more like a marching band or big band or, quite often, a jazz fusion group. Rarely does it sound like any one thing for too long, which keeps it interesting.

A few of the melodies on disc two are familiar ("Shadows and..." contains allusions to "Whispering a Prayer" and an excerpt from "Bangkok," for example) and some of the melodies are subtle and inspired, but some of the melodies don't make sense for me, musically. Some individual sections of compositions seem too different from one another or seem to exist without real purpose or are never really given a chance to develop. Many of the odd time and key signatures are overwhelming. I don't possess the musical understanding that is needed to appreciate exactly what Steve is doing.

Even if there are perhaps some shortcomings, I find disc two to still be a true wonder to listen to. Although it doesn't contain his guitar playing, it still contains Steve's magic. The standout track for me is "Frangelica Pt. II," one of the more accessible tracks on Vol. II.

There is an undeniable attraction to the music on both of these discs that has made me want to listen to them over and over. The title of this review is a phrase Steve used in the liner notes to describe the ability of a composer to "capture, and make real, the audio vision of their mind's eye." There's no doubt that Steve has captured something intangible and made it quite real. It's the ethereal magnetism of his music. Very few artists today are capable of this. It would probably be fair to say that not even all of Steve's releases have it, but Sound Theories most certainly does. It contains music with so many layers, so much depth, and Steve has so much passion for what he plays and creates, that undoubtedly both discs in this set will be spinning in cd players... and spinning heads... for years to come.

Sound Theories Vol 1 & 2", a double-live CD capturing legendary guitarist Steve Vai's electrifying collaboration with the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra. The two-disc set spotlights rare material pulled from five European performances, a studio session and a soundcheck rehearsal recording, all of which took place between mid-2004 and 2005.

"Volume 1" features Steve Vai playing guitar with the Orchestra, which has earned worldwide acclaim.
What he does on CD 1 is take those performances and blends them together so it sounds as though it was all 1 show. Truly amazing.

Together Steve and the Orchestra they bring new life to both
existing and never-before-heard Steve Vai songs.

Highlights on disc 1 are

"For the Love of God", "Liberty", "The Murder", "Attitude Song", "Salamanders in the Sun".

That's not to say the rest aren't as good as those, they are but I feel that these are the songs that are just a bit above the rest and will be the ones you'll remember most.

"Volume 2" features the Orchestra by it self performing songs written and composed by Steve Vai.

Listening to CD 2 it sounds as though he's playing along with the Orchestra, but he's not.

Highlights on CD 2 are
Well CD 2 is the highlight as the whole disc is just that good.

So there you have it.

The question is should you buy it or not.
I say this is an album that Steve Vai fans and rock music fans and even some of you metal heads out there can agree on that is worth buying.

Absolutely amazing! Vai's compositions sound so full and lush with the orchestra. Steve's attention to detail in the audio editing, is a lesson worth aspiring to also. The guitar playing is faultless - as you'd expect from any Vai release.

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.

Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.

Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

Though the lightning crackling across the CD cover suggests a heavy-metal band (or perhaps a cross between the Addams Family and a Black Oak Arkansas reunion), the second release by Cherryholmes on Ricky Skaggs's label establishes the family band as one of the most promising acts in contemporary bluegrass. The star here is Cia Cherryholmes, the banjo-playing daughter who composes most of the album's original material and ranks with Alison Krauss as a vocalist on highlights such as the opening "You Don't Know What Love Is" and the prison-ballad title track. Yet the instrumental interplay and harmonies reflect the sextet's blood ties, while the range of material bridges the traditional and progressive (it's hard to hear Cia's "Don't Give Your Heart to a Knoxville Girl," sung by brother B.J., without thinking of the Louvin Brothers' classic "Knoxville Girl"). --Don McLeese

Cherryholmes first Skaggs Family cd was excellent and it appears the family is starting a tradition. This cd is solid country and bluegrass. The instruments are played with technical skill , feeling, and the arrangements are perfect for each song. The singing is top notch and I much prefer Cia Cherryholmes voice in clarity and range. This CD is a must for every child. It is so important for children to appreciate the great composers. This CD is a wonderful introduction and a fun way for children to learn the facts and names to go along with the tunes. The selection of pieces for this disk are also wonderful. It is nice that the songs are also to where you can listen to them without the lyrics. My children love it and my husband loves to hear just the music (& he is more of a oldies rock n roll & country music man).

We originally received Beethoven's wig from a friend. My two year old and eight year old loved it so much that I had to buy #2 from www.amazon.com and got the third one used on www.ebay.com. Now I have them all on a playlist on my Ipod, and we play them non-stop in the car, and at home. (putting all three on my Ipod makes it more bearable since it is not always the same songs). Too bad www.Itunes.com hasn't caught on yet.

The best part was when my daughter told her Music Camp teacher, " Tchaikovsky is my favorite composer!" I thought she was going to faint.

We play this probably once a day in our home and my kids (one is almost 5, and 2 yr old twins) all enjoy it! Definitely appealing to kids, but also not offensive to the adult ear. I even find myself humming the words when I hear these classical pieces at other times of the day. I recommend for any household with small kids - it introduces classical music in a very fun, upbeat way.

My kids take piano lessons, and I was hoping that listening to classical music would help them enjoy their lessons a bit more, since many of their lesson pieces are variations of classical melodies, and, for whatever reason, they don't naturally enjoy classical music.

I had heard rave reviews about the Classical Kids series of CDs (where a story is set to a composer's music), and, while my children enjoyed them, they didn't really want to hear the stories repeatedly, so the melodies didn't stick.

We got this CD from the library, and the minute they heard the first line of this CD, they were in hysterics. They just LOVED the silly lyrics, and they've listened to the CD repeatedly. They begged me to buy our own copy and to get the 2nd and 3rd CDs in this series. They ask questions about the music and the lyrics, trying to figure out what play on words and reality the creator of the CD was thinking about. They remember the music and who composed it. And they are much more interested in playing the pieces they know on the piano!

So, for our purposes, this CD has been perfect.

And yes, I put my money where my mouth is and purchased all three CDs in this set :) This one is still our favorite.

Because I don't live close to my almost 4 year old grandson, I had this shipped to him. My son (his father) says that he asks to hear this all the time. They have to take it in the car wherever they go and listen. Even though the words are silly, I am pleased to know that as he grows older, he will recognize classical music (of course he may always sing the silly words!).

Brad Paisley's unabashedly back-to-basics 1999 debut, Who Needs Pictures, went platinum. Part II continues in that direction with 13 songs (10 of them cowritten by Paisley) that build on that impressive beginning. While "Two People Fell in Love" and "I Wish You'd Stay" overflow with heart and eloquence, he's witty on "Two Feet of Topsoil," loungy on "You Have That Effect on Me," and loopy with "Come on Over Tonight." He evokes his West Virginia roots with a stark rendition of Darrell Scott's "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive." Buck Owens, George Jones, and Bill Anderson join him on the obligatory vocal event, Anderson's "Too Country." But Paisley's courage goes further. It takes nerve to slap an instrumental ("Munster Rag") on any Nashville-produced album in 2001 and even greater fortitude to close it out with an emotional acoustic performance of "The Old Rugged Cross" recorded live at the Opry. Part II makes one magnificent, resounding point: mainstream Nashville, try as it might, hasn't quite succeeded in confining traditional country to the Hall of Fame --Rich Kienzle

You've already heard hits on the radio like "I'm Gonna Miss Her", "Wrapped Around" and "Two People Fell in Love", but there's more great songs than that. "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is worth the price of the CD all by itself. And you probably won't hear the duet with George Jones, Bill Anderson and Buck Owens, "Too Country", on the the radio. Plus, how else can you truely appreciate the lyrics to "Two Feet of Topsoil" without listening to the song?

This is a misnomer--not all of these duets are all that famous--but it's a fine compilation nonetheless. You'll hear selections from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers (Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc at their most elegant French), Madama Butterfly (Carlo Bergonzi and Renata Scotto--an impassioned pair), Lucia di Lammermoor (a classy Alfredo Kraus and Edita Gruberova), the lovely Lakme duet, The Presentation of the Silver Rose from Der Rosenkavalier (with the earnest Christa Ludwig and the other-worldly Teresa Stich-Randall), and a fine Trovatore "Miserere" (with Leontyne Price and Franco Bonisolli singing up a storm). There are many others, too--a veritable cornucopia of couplings--and a treat for the opera lover. --Robert Levine

The title of this cd is misleading and I found myself wondering whose list did they use. That is not to say that there aren't some real treasures included here. The duet from Lakme is lovely in every way, Mady Mesple in particular, very beautful and very french, and far superior to Sutherlands hooty approach. Scotto and Bergonzi are superb, the Tristan and Isolde of Vickers and Dernesch truly other worldly, and the presentation of the rose duet with the young Ludwig and the astonishing Teresa Stich- Randell had me playing it over and over and I still can't believe it, but the most famous??? This cd is definitly worth buying, and I hated giving it only 3 stars but if you're talking most famous you could fill a couple of cd's with Puccini, not to mention Verdi, Mozart, etc. before Bizet's Les Pecheurs des perles, beautiful as it is, made the most famous list.

This is a marvelous CD, especially the Pearl Fisher's duet with Gedda and Blanc. I would rank that performance second all time, just below the
forever unforgettable Bjoerling/Merrill version. Worth the price just for that selection, and all the rest is top rate as well.
