Amazon.com essential recording
Ray Charles is the Genius of Soul, but he's always had a bit of country boy in him, too. Between playing hillbilly piano when he was a kid and landing several duets on the country charts in the '80s, Charles released this 1962 classic, taking 12 country standards and proving that great songs can remain great, no matter what the setting. Behind blaring brass and thrilling strings, Brother Ray transforms "Hey, Good Lookin'" and "Bye Bye Love" into big-band swing; "You Win Again" into the Nashville Sound; and "I Love You So Much It Hurts" into the most elegant of pop. "I Can't Stop Loving You" was the big hit, but everything else here is just as timeless and beautiful. --David Cantwell
Amazon.com
Ray broke barriers. In the '50s he invented soul by mixing the sacred and profane of black music: R & B and gospel. In 1962 he went completely crazy, interpreting classic country. It was one of his finest moments. From the start the record is an oddity. A big band pumps, female background singers rip through a chorus of "Bye Bye Love," and Ray brings high energy to the Everly Bros. teeny-bop lyrics. Some songs suffer from syrupy choir and string arrangements, but Ray is always there to set things straight. He gives country some funk, and erases, for a day, all questions of black and white. --Steve Tignor

Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music.......2007-03-16
Can anyone say anything negative about Ray Charles? Not me either. A fine recording.
Ray's C&W.......2007-01-10
This is one of Ray's best. He brings his special brand of jazz, r&b to country-western. If you like Ray Charles, or Country-Western music, you should own this CD.
RAY COULD DO IT "ALL".......2007-01-10
I mean ALL!! He did Country & Western just as good - or should I say better - than the Country/Western Singers!! The "High Priest" (as he was known in the 60's)...no matter what he sang....He did it BETTER than the REST!! Sad to lose him - May He Rest In Peace!! I can hear him now... in Heaven's Choir!!
Don't be turned away by the title.......2006-06-16
One of my favorite albums (and all-time favorite album titles). Enjoyable even if you are not a fan of country and western music. Ray Charles performs these songs with his own unique style and sound (IMHO - most, if not all, of Ray's performances are superior to the originals).
Broke the Rules and Reinvented Them.......2006-04-24
When Ray Charles moved from Atlantic to ABC, the label expected to get a big selling R&B artist with enough appeal to cross over to pop audiences. Ray at first complied to this narrow view of him and his talents. He started at ABC with big R&B hits as Unchain my Heart. He felt he owed it to the label to give them what they expected. They had just given him an unprecedented contract in which he would keep the rights over his masters and gave him complete artistic freedom. Ray knew his time would come. Soon he made his wish known he wanted to record a record with Country tunes. This idea was met with great apprehension. This doubt in the concept was not without grounds. The R&B world and the country world were at the time still very separate entities. Black artist playing white music was not done in the record industry. Ray went ahead and broke the rules, succeeding marvelously, just as he did when he mixed R&B and Gospel a few years prior.
Yet the record itself is not strictly a crossing between R&B and Country. Ray chose the Big Band approach to the songs. His take of Country was more the classic American Songbook view. Ray was not new to Jazz, having recorded in the medium before. Back at Atlantic he worked with parts of the Basie Orchestra and Quincy Jones on Jazz Standards. So he felt quite at ease here. He wasn't new to Country either. He'd grown up with the Grand Ole Opry shows on the radio and allegedly worked as a piano played in Hill Billy bands down south. His comfort with both styles shines through on this record. Here Charles reworks Hank Williams and Don Gibson classics as You Win Again and I Can't Stop Loving You and creates new rules in the process.
A couple years down the line the mixture of Black and White music would become very common. Record labels as Stax and Hi Records in Memphis build there house styles around in it. Fame studios would excel in it. When Ray dropped this gem on the market it hit like a bomb. Modern Sounds became one of his biggest selling records ever and artistically one of his most compelling.

Album Description
In the Blondie tradition, The Sounds are fronted by a standout blonde. They have a penchant for swelling dramatic choruses with dancey 80s drums & candy coated riffs. This is an enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks & multimedia computer files. Enhancements include two previously unreleased tracks, a dance remix of 'Rock 'n Roll,' three European videos, photos, & weblinks. New Line. 2003.

Good, but pick up their sophomore album first.......2007-06-27
I would say this album was fantastic if they hadn't blown it away with their second album. The Sounds are going nowhere but up!
One Catchy CD!.......2007-04-23
You'll be tapping toes or fingers to this. I bought "Dying to Say This To You" and couldn't stop playing it, so decided I wanted more of the Sounds and I picked up "Living in America" a week after. It's got a lighter pop sound and catchier, faster beats to it as opposed to "Dying to Say This To You", hence I absolutely love it.
I agree the Sounds will one way or another (no pun intended) remind you of Blondie. I also agree with most of the other reviewers that Maja's voice is something of an aquired taste. She reminds me of Debbie Harry, but she reminds me of a less melodious Harry-- such as the rougher parts of "One Way or Another" or the rapping part of "Rapture". I can see how not everyone is apt to warm up to her enough to want a whole CD of her singing, but she has a unique sound and I enjoy it. Perhaps it would be best to listen to the samples on the Amazon page or on the Sounds' MySpace page before making any purchasing decisions. Here's a quick breakdown of the songs:
Tracks 1-3, "Seven Days A Week", "Dance With Me", and "Living in America" start the album off just right. "Dance With Me" may make you to actually dance to it.
Track 4, "Hit Me!", is my least favorite track and probably showcases the negatives of Maja's voice more than any other track. I think it could've done with some better lyrics. You'd think a song with an exclaimation point in the title would be a little more powerful, but this is not the case. It builds up nicely though and, like every song on the disc, has a great beat.
Everything from track 5 to 8 ("Mine For Life", "Rock 'N Roll", "Like A Lady", "Reggie") is gold to me.
With track 9, "Fire", I like it a little less than the preceding tracks but it's still a good song. This one and track 10, "Hope You're Happy Now", sort of lose me at the refrains. I think like "Hit Me!" they could have benefited with some lyrical adjustments but they are solid enough that I can't bring myself knock an entire star off of this CD just because these two and "Hit Me!" don't quite make my Favorites list.
Track 11, "Riot" is awesome and the untitled final track, "S.O.U.N.D.S", is a neat way to end the disc off.
Great stuff.......2007-03-25
Simply splendid new-wave influenced pop-rock. Very very derivative of course but really good nonetheless.
If you listened to Dying to Say This to You - try this one out!.......2007-01-19
I love this band and I'm just now getting into their older album. It's great! See this band live - will not dissapoint!
But it's nobody's business what I do or please.......2006-08-12
I just found out about The Sounds a little over a month ago. Ended up buying Dying To Say This To You purely on a hunch, hoping it be worth a quarter of what I paid (a mere 10 dollars I might add). To say I was in dire need of some good music was an understatement. I enjoyed Dying... endlessly and figured "why not get Living In America, it's only 8 bucks". Turns out that, too, was a great choice because I enjoy this CD just as much as I do Dying...
About this whole debate as to whether Maja is a competent vocalist or not. My opinion is that yes, she's got a good voice with some interesting lyrics. Sure there are much more talented singers out there but I couldn't imagine this band being fronted by a more charismatic person. Maja really does beg your attention, good or bad.
So the CD starts off on the highest of notes with Seven Days A Week which really feels like a rock song from years past. This song is where you'll decide very quickly if you like Maja or not. The title track, Living In America, is quite possibly the best song featured. With driving guitars (well, driving in The Sounds' case), a memorable chorus, and some nice electronic sounds, if you're looking to get into The Sounds, just listen to this track. Rock'n Roll is a nice slower track where Maja kind of puts her voice on display, a good song to listen to if you're looking to mellow out. Reggie has that 'familiar' feel to it thanks to the chorus, a great track nonetheless. Riot is another terrific song. It's an in-your-face type track with some pretty good lyrics and a great beat.
All in all The Sounds have become one of my favorite bands thanks to they're different-ness. Listen to the radio for a day. I am willing to bet that you won't hear anything like them, but of course I haven't listened to the radio in close to a year, so then again, maybe there is. But nevertheless, The Sounds are nothing short of a great band and I hope they'll be around for a long time to come.
My favorite songs are Seven Days A Week, Living In America, Hit Me!, Rock'n Roll, and Riot. If you're skeptical about this CD, or the band, after reading all the reviews, just listen for yourself. I love The Sounds, but that's not to say that you will. Preferences my friend, preferences.

Album Description
While other genre labels like Narada and Windham Hill diversified from their new age roots, Real Music has been consistent over the years in providing nothing but the best music for relaxation, meditation and spiritual enhancement. Their most notable recordings come from an Eastern Buddhist mindset, with multi-instrumentalist Karunesh leading the pack on the strength of previous discs Zen Breakfast and Nirvana Café. His basic approach to contemplative music involves a blend of exotic textures (bells, chimes, Tibetan bowls, sitar and Chinese instruments) with easy grooves and rich walls of ambience. The new collection's trance inducing instrumentation and sensuous rhythms begins with a few minutes of pure ambience and sitar, before slowly introducing a gentle percussive line ("For the Joy of It All"); Avinash's graceful Indian violin carries a mournful beauty that is also part of the similarly hypnotic, easy grooving "Monsoon's Dance." Bikram's Bansuri flute floats through beautifully in key locations, such as the introduction of "Mount Kailash." While the uninitiated might feel that there's a certain repetitive nature to the tracks (which usually begin with sparse instrumentation before the electricity is turned on), the intention is more to invoke a sense of inner peace than to be truly innovative. The title of the richly textured "Zensual" sums up the mystical intent of the thought provoking exercise.

The pleasure in the feeling of non-existence.......2006-05-28
I heard the song "Monsoon Dance" on sky.fm. I previewed other songs and then bought almost all songs. Others are fine too, just listened once.
It's been 4 days since I bought them. I am not listening to any other song than Monsoon Dance for almost 4 days, day and night.. I am usually obsessed with these kind of mystic songs, listening to one song at a time for days a stretch, even when I sleep.
Thats the effect of the song Monsoon Dance. Truly, the mystic feeling of non-existence is an amazing pleasure. I feel one with the entire universe when I listen to this song.
I wonder what the composer might have gone through to come up with such an amazing piece of music. The Indian violin's effect is rather deep.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.......2006-03-10
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I have every heard. I bring it everywhere when I need to relax. The sound of the instruments from India are just breathtaking.
This is great!.......2006-01-12
....if you like really strange, annoying German people who try to go "native." This is nothing but commodified exoticism; music for spiritual enhancement my arse....
Masterful & mystical "new age music" from KARUNESH .......2005-09-23
I discovered the music of this German-born composer/multi-instrumentalist by accident. I was browsing in the new age music section at a certain mega-bookstore, looking for the latest CD from Kitaro (one of my favorite artists.) Well, I didn't find the Kitaro disc that day, but another CD soon caught my eye, one by an artist I'd never heard of - "Call of the Mystic" by Karunesh. Curious about the cover-art and song titles, I put the CD on the store's headphone listening station. I was soon immersed in the music, and intrigued by its exotic sounds. Of course, these were only brief sound clips from the album, so as each snatch of music soon cut off, I was left wanting to hear more. I then came home, found the CD on Amazon, and ordered it (sorry to the bookstore, but your prices were just too high! : ) Anyway, to make a long story short, in the several months since then, I have become a major fan of Karunesh (pronounced "Care-un-ish", which is, I learned, also the sanscrit word for "compassion".) I have now also collected several titles from his extensive back catalog, and while all of his albums have their own strengths, I believe that "Call of the Mystic" still rates as one of his finest overall releases. With it's mystical/mysterious feel, warm synth textures, and heavy use of exotic instruments, this CD literally makes me feel better when I listen to it. I know that the term "healing music" is probably overused in this genre, but in this case the term really fits. It's one of those rare albums that somehow pulls the listener into its World, and transports them to a better state-of-mind for it's duration. (Kitaro is perhaps the only other new age artist who's work has this effect on me.) Like most of Karunesh's works, this album is fully instrumental (So those of you who do not like vocals/lyrics with your new age music will be particularly pleased!), with all of the tracks running in the 5 to 7 minute range (a good length for this type of music.) Now, as people usually like points of comparsion for reviews such as this, I would say that Karunesh falls into the same general "new age/instrumental/electronic" genre as Kitaro, Vangelis, or Patrick O'Hearn (although his music's rarely as gloomy as O'Hearn's can be.) However, comparisons can tend to be a tad misleading, and at the end of the day Karunesh is a unique artist who's music has a personality of its own...Here is a quick rundown of all the tracks: the album opens with "The Joy of It All", an Eastern-flavored track which benefits from a hypnotic percussion groove and the sitar work of special guest Govi (a respected new age artist in his own right.) "Hearing You Now" features piano/flute lines that rotate back and forth, and an ear-catching mix of both electronic & acoustic drumming. "Monsoon's Dance" gives us one of Karunesh's most memorable melodies, played with a gorgeous blend of piano, Indian violin, and synth/percussion backing. "Mount Kailash" has a deeply-spiritual feel, and is highlighted by another guest spot from Govi (this time playing what sounds like an acoustic guitar run through a digital delay effect...quite a beguiling sound, actually!) "Sunrise at the Ganges" is basically a sitar/flute duet set over a backdrop of synth chords and Indian-style drumming. "Zensual" takes on a darker, electronic tone, with some mysterious "reed"-like synth soloing, layers of keyboard ambience, and a sensual rhythmic groove. "And the Grass Grows by Itself" adds some contrast to the pevious track, based mainly around acoustic sounds and a fun, hopeful melody. This track also features the hum of a Tibetan singing bowl (an unusal sound that I have come to like.) Lastly, "Ancient Voices", the only track with no noticable percussion line, is made up almost entirely of sitar and woodwind sounds, and serves to end the album on a peaceful, contemplative note. All in all, this is an album (and artist) that should not be missed if you are a fan of new age music. I will have to agree with what another reviewer said about Amazon's soundclips, though. The brief clips here are all of the opening moments of these songs, before the main themes really kick in - so the CD really does need to be heard in its full context to be truly appreciated. Also, speaking of other reviews, I think it is quite remarkable that of the six customer reviews that have been posted of this CD thus far, EVERY single one has given it a perfect 5 stars!...Amen!
Call of the Mystic~Karunesh.......2005-07-10
Even though this is my first experience with Karunesh, this album was exactly what I expected,...and I enjoyed the different selection of instruments used to evoke a light, whimsical, and meditative feeling of calm. Recommended for light meditation, yoga practice, or massage therapy.

Awesome...Rain In Stereo.......2007-06-28
I work 3rd shift, and I have trouble sleeping during the day. A friend of mine suggested this cd, and I'm glad I took her advice. While waiting on my cd to arrive, I found a bargain rain cd at a retail store. While I enjoyed that one too, Rain in Country is far superior to it. I have a 5.1 surround sound system, and this cd is so much clearer than the retail one. The clarity is amazing, and so real. Its like you are sitting on your front porch with your Grandfather as the rain pours down. Remember those days? I think there is some faint thunder, but I'm not really sure. I believe this to purely sounds of rain, with no music or birds or duck sounds. Another thing is how the rain sometimes is softer and sometimes harder; just like a real rain shower. I put it on repeat several minutes before bed around 8am in the morning, and then I start to read my Vince Flynn or Ronald Reagan Diaries. It is so soothing, and I quickly fall to sleep. Even during the day when I'm off, I find this so relaxing. My wife loves it too. I don't claim to know if this is the best or not, but compared to the other cd it is. The sound is so clear and life like in my stereo, I'm curious how they made it. This isn't a thunderstorm cd, but purely 63 minutes of rain. I may buy thunderstorm cd, but I won't buy another rain one. I am very very happy with this purchase & you will be too!
wonderful rain sounds.......2007-04-07
This CD has the pleasant sounds of rain falling outside your window. There are no sounds of frogs croaking or birds chirping, etc., which I find unpleasant, as they keep me awake. I put this CD on repeat and it plays throughout the night. I REALLY like this soothing sound of rain that is on this CD. It is the best "rain CD" that I've found. I have given away a couple of other "rain CDs" because they had "thunder sounds" & "frogs/birds/etc.sounds" BUT this CD is just "wonderful rain sounds"!
soothing relaxation.......2007-04-02
I live in the city and use environmental CDs to generate "white noise" and cover up street noises. I set my CD player on repeat and play the disk all night long. This disk has proven quite useful for this purpose
Rain .......2007-03-15
I really like to hear rain on my rooftop. This is a really good Cd. It sounds like real rain. I enjoy listening to it at night. It is relaxing.
Relaxing background sounds.......2007-03-14
I wanted just the sound of the rain in the country and this delivered. A few sounds of birds, nothing distracting, and no music, just the sounds of rain. A good value.

Music is great, as is the playing. However, the last song is not Magnetic Rag but rather the same version of Maple Leaf Rag heard earlier on the album.
What is with that?
More Than Excellent.......2006-08-16
I had previously purchased a Scott Joplin CD and was disappointed by the dull quality and dispirited playing by the artist. This CD more than makes up for it. The music was beautifully performed and the recording was very clear. Every piece was perfect!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Album Description
"Ki ho'a lu," or slack Key guitar, refers to the altered tunings of the acoustic guitar that are unique to the musical heritage of Hawaii. The beautiful slack Key sound is synonomous with the majic of the Hawaiian Islands. This collection of solo performances features 7 well known slack key guitarists.

Brings back visit to Hawaii.......2005-12-10
I had no idea what Slack Key Guitar was until finally took the wrapper off this CD and played it. Love this CD. Very relaxing. Great backgound music-can let it play all day. Brings back the memories of our visit to Hawaii.
I judge all my other slack key cds against this one..........2000-06-02
Bought it on May 17. Ended up buying 11 (and counting) other slack key music cds. But still my favorite overall. I can't sing, but do want to learn to play slack key, so this instrumental cd of solo (no other instrument) slack key inspires me. You will not go wrong buying this one!
The mellow performances match my personality, and bring to mind images of balmy breezes and swaying trees.
I've been looking for another instrumental cd of solo slack key performances, but have yet to find one that matches this one...except maybe Ozzie Kotani's, and Ledward Kaapana's live CD.
If you are wanting to play slack key, listen to this one and hear what can be achieved, without being distracted by other instruments.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

best in show 2006.......2007-01-05
Okay, not even sure that it came out in 2006. However, that is when I first heard it, so that is what counts. I really hope they put out another album - even if it is only half as good as this one, it will be better than 95% of what I get to hear.
Buy it, burn it, steal it, whatever you have to do it is worth it.
Great Covers! And Great Originals Too!!.......2006-03-01
This band has a sweet tone mixed with a folk and blues style. They hit the grove on every track! Buckets of Rain is a great song and they pay quite a tribute to it with their eclectic style!
The Fun Is Contagious.......2005-07-14
Redbird's debut recording is a very sweet collaboration between Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst & Peter Mulvey. While none of these artists is a household name, each has established an individual solo career and come together here with a blending of sound. Their collaborative work together is exquisite. While each is represented by at least one track that they penned, the emphasis is on the music. Part of the charm of the set is the diversity and range of songwriters whose material they perform. This was apparently recorded in Mark Olson's living room in Fort Atkinson WI & has an informal feel.
R.E.M.'s "You Are the Everything" is a bright acoustic flower, "I'm very scared for this world, I'm very scared for me, Eviscerate your memory." "Lighthouse Light" by Ry Cavanaugh is a dreamy folk melody with Kris' lovely alto, "There is light in the distance, It's coming in from the west, There is light in the distance, Thinking of the one that I love best." One of my favorite tracks is the gorgeous "Patience" written by Mark Sandman who was the lead singer for the band Morphine. Kris' delivery is stunning as she calls to allow for time to heal. "Moonglow" is a standard that Benny Goodman recorded in the 1930s and has been covered by jazz artists like Duke Ellington & Count Basie as well as female vocalists like Billie Holiday & Joni James with a new version on Carly Simon's soon-to-be-released "Moonlight Serenade" CD. Redbird's acoustic version has a jazz flavor but is recast as an intimate folk gem with all three voices blending, "I started praying, 'Dear Lord please let this last.'" Mitch Jayne was a member of the Dillards who recorded his song "The Whole World Round." Redbird's version has a bluegrass flavor and polishes his lovely melody. "Buckets of Rain" is a classic Dylan song with one of his best melodies and great lyrics that Redbird nail in this catchy quiet version. The set concludes with a version of a song Tom Waits penned & first recorded on his "Mule Variations" CD. This is an excellent acoustic folk set from a group that obviously is having a blast playing together. The fun is contagious. Enjoy!
