First there was Cesaria Evora, Then Lura, and now, the Portuguese/Cape Verdean singer/composer/guitarist Sara Tavares. She's more about adapting her homeland's musical conceptions to include Angolan sembe Afrobeats on "Poka Terra," with rapper Melo D, reggae, and Cape Verdean coladeira rhythms on "Planeta Sukri," co-starring vocalist Boy Ge Mendes. Fadista Ana Moura helps Tavares tell her soulful story on "De Nua." Cape Verde gives us a great gift in Sara Tavares! I saw a video without sound on an airplane for Balance - I was trying to guess the tempo or the style of music, but I got caught up in watching the dancers. Then I listened to a sample online, and was sold! After I bought this album, I listened to it 7 times in a row that first day. It is lush and varied and her voice is delicate and strong. The complex rhythms and instrumentations, the gorgeous Portugese language, and the general buoyancy of this record are addictive. I listen to it at least once a day and I have had now for about a month. Support this artist and buy her work, don't download!

What a find !.......2007-02-12

......I first heard Sara T on a local Public TV program, and of course she played Balance' ! I just fell in love with it, and went to listen to her at our "World Music Festival" in Chicago last October.....again I was blown away ! I finally got hold of the CD as a Christmas present ...and immediatly bought another copy for a friend of mine who lives in Wuhan, China...unfortunately, the Chinese censors allowed the CD "wrapper" to go through, but removed the CD itself. :-( ......I really like every track on this one !

Great Album.......2007-02-09

I have followed Sara Tavares from the beginning of her career and I must say that her music is getting better with time. I recently saw her in a concert in Boston, MA and was moved to tears. Her voice is absolutly beautiful and you feel the love that she has for her country in the songs that she sings. This is an album that you will never be tired of listening to. I promise!!!

There's hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of guitar, bass, and drums. A trio of relentless rockers--"My Party," "Camaro," and the sarcastic "Charmer"--are sure to pacify those familiar with the Kings' blueprint, yet there is ripening in the band's approach heard, in several of the record's 13 songs. Do not hesitate to buy if you were disappointed with ASH.......2007-07-11

I thought Youth and Young Manhood was excellent, thought Aha Shake Heartbreak wasn't that good and therefore wasn't gonna pick up Because of the Times. But my husband had read good reviews and purchased it. Wow! What a coup/comeback for the Followill boys! I think this is their best so far; a very strong disc. I don't think there is a dud song on the whole album. I almost blew out the speakers in my car cranking up Black Thumbnail and My Party over and over and over. Moody, diverse, rockin' - love it! Buy it, you will not be sorry you did.

Disappointing comeback.......2007-07-07

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't been able to get into this. I loved their first album, thought their second one was okay, but this one may be worse than the last one. I can't really give too thorough of a review since I didn't get past the fourth song on the first listen, and haven't listened to it since, even seriously considered trading it in.

I got this CD after reading a stellar review by Q Magazine appauding it. Needless to say, I was disappointed.

Best Alternative/Indie/Rock Album This Year.......2007-07-05

If you're reading this review, you probably know to some extent who the Kings of Leon are - a relatively young indie-rock band out of Tennessee whose appeal is said to come from equal parts youthful energy and wisdom-beyond-their-years.

Their debut was a southern-fried scramble of distorted guitars and yelping vocals that seemed to delight in its own unholiness. On Because of the Times, the guitars are still distorted, the singer's still yelping and the themes aren't necessarily wholesome - see 'Knocked Up', in which singer Caleb belts "She don't care what her mama says, no she's gonna have my baby" - but at times there's a beauty to the arrangements that's almost divine.

That's not to suggest that the band has forgotten to rock, though, because they haven't; in fact, at this point in their career the band has the musicianship to back up their ambition, and the result is some of the most fulfilling rock you can hear on the indie scene today.

If you like either of KoL's previous two albums, you'll love this one. If you're looking for an introduction to the Kings of Leon's work, this is as good a starting point as any.

Absolutely gorgeous, top-notch.......2007-07-01

It's been a while I am aware of KoL. I saw them opening The Strokes and found them interesting. Their first singles were intriguing. But with this album they have reached a summit of musical expression. Sure their sound is certainly more polished, more produced than before, sometimes dangerously sounding U2ish but this CD is simply a beauty of universal soul music. The singer has such an extraordinary soulful voice and melodies and orchestration are captivating. Easily one of the best CDs of 2007 and already lining up for best of 2000s!

Wow- New Music that actually lives up to its reputation?.......2007-06-30

This is a really good CD. I was surprised b/c I have heard them described as the Skynrd Strokes. I am not really a big fan of the Strokes and living in Ohio, you hear Skynrd everytime you turn the radio on. But, this album is unique and doesn't seem packaged. This album has a lot of soul. Buy it, learn the lyrics and sing as loud as you can while in the shower.

At a time when the majority of those his age are drifting into retirement, 65-year-old Bob Dylan has put the capper on a three-record run that ranks with the best in his storied, 44-album career. Like Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft before it, Modern Times is a rootsy, blues-soaked pool of the purest form of Americana--skipping the progressive bells or whistles for an understated backing by his touring band. Dylan's voice, which cracks, rasps and moans from the pop singer's pulpit, hasn't been this rich and emotive since 1976's Desire. And while his lyrics prolong his steadfast allusions to a higher power and his own immortality, they are not without the Dylan mirth, as when he sings of tracking pop queen Alicia Keys from Hell's Kitchen to Tennessee in "Thunder on the Mountain," the album's opener, which teams with "Someday Baby" and "Rollin' and Tumblin'" (for which Dylan misguidedly claims writing credit) as the record's most fiery numbers. Modern Times is a modern classic.......2007-07-14

Don't worry: no matter what the title may imply, Modern Times is not Dylan attempting to update his music to fit current trends. He has yet to do that. Instead, Modern Times is for the most part a bluesy album: he even rewrites a few blues classics ("Rollin' and Tumblin" becomes, well... "Rollin' and Tumblin'"; "Someday Baby" is a slightly different "Trouble No More" with the "Hip Shake"/"La Grange" riff, and "Levee's Gonna Break" is little more than a rewrite of "When the Levee Breaks"). "Rollin'" is energetic, but it's also probably the weakest moment on a generally strong record - original blues songs like the wrenching "Workingman's Blues #2" and hard-rockin' "Thunder on the Mountain" (love the guitar solo!) are the two indisputable highlights, and they're perfectly contrasted by jazzy country-blueses such as "Spirit on the Water", "Beyond the Horizon" and "When the Deal Goes Down". The country songs here are all among the greatest Dylan ever did in the genre, though to be fair none of them are "Lay, Lady, Lay" - "Horizon" is a bit too long, but only by about a minute or so. And while Dylan's melodies are normally nothing worth getting excited about, I love the melody (and the lyrics, and everything else) found on "Nettie Moore". In fact, I think "Nettie Moore" is my favorite song on this album - it hasn't gotten the hype of songs like "Thunder on the Water", "Workingman's Blues #2" or "Spirit on the Water", but it's a fabulous folk song and I will definitely stick up for it. Give it ten years; this'll be one of Dylan's classic songs. You see if it isn't. Oh yeah, and "Ain't Talkin'" has the best lyrics found on this album. And I really like the song's dark, doomy atmosphere too, with the violins and such. Plenty of albums by awful artists came out in 2006, and it's nice to hear Dylan (who's twice the age of most members of My Chemical Romance - third behind the Eagles and Green Day as the band I unnecessarily insult the most in my reviews, by the way) showing them all up. This is his best in a very long time.

As good as Dylan gets.......2007-07-12

Its a shame that so many folks become closed minded to new music at a certain age. This is as good as anything Dylan has ever done, but because of the above it won't be remembered as well.

Still the greatest of all time.......2007-07-10

At 23 years old I am not your typical Bobhead, I own all 30+ Dylan albums including bootlegs. I have been to several Dylan concerts over the last few years. Dylan has come out with 3 studio albums the last 10 years all critical successes. With Modern Times Dylan was the oldest artist to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Out of the three this is my least favorite. I loved Love and Theft and liked Time Out of Mind. Love & Theft was loud, funny and all around great. Time Out of Mind was a little depressing but had amazing lyrics. Modern Times is a mix between the two albums. To be completely honest I only liked three songs on this album: Thunder on the Mountain, Spirit on the Water and Workingman Blues #2. Someday Baby gets better with every listen so maybe I will put that one on there too. But who cares? It's Dylan....get the cd already.

Is It Rolling Bob? You Bet It Is!.......2007-07-02

For 40+ years, Bob Dylan has spilled my heart, stripped bare my soul and rattled my complacent mind. Modern Times reassures and re-inspires. Aging we may be but still relevant: older, wiser, gentler, more tolerant and deeply clarified about the daily human commonalities that join us all. Just when fans think they have a handle on Bob Dylan, he shifts gears and opens his reach in a new direction letting us know that the rest of us can do the same. No other artist steps as unfailingly in rhythm with my generation as Bobby D. He knows where we are, who we are, and I hope, in the still of the night, I'll be with you, Bob, When the Deal Goes Down. Like Highway 61 Revisited and Blood on the Tracks, Modern Times calls us to A New Morning.

I heard the deafening noise........2007-06-26

This is Bob Dylan's 32nd studio album. Most of the songs are adaptations of older songs (mostly blues songs) with new lyrics by Dylan. The music has a rather "rootsy" feel to it, while still sounding modern. I won't get into a song by song analysis, because many more knowledgeable people than me have already done that. I'll just call it a damn good album of Dylan singing the blues and leave it at that.

Depending on who's counting, there are anywhere from 100 to n-frigging-thousand subgenres of rock music a band can slide into for easy categorization. And depending on where you drop the laser on Fair to Midland's debut album, Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True, at least half of those subgenres are being reinvented at once. But to call this Dallas quintet merely eclectic is to sell them way short. No, Fair to Midland are masters of fusing those subgenres into something that's cohesive, intensely focused, and in a bold new category all its own.

Recorded with art-rock super-producer David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, Peter Gabriel), Fables From a Mayfly finds Fair to Midland stretching out even further into the aggression and atmospherics at their core while taking their inherent gift for melody to new levels. Tracks such as "Kyla Cries Cologne," "April Fools and Eggmen," and the gripping first single, "Dance of the Manatee", showcase Fair to Midland's flair for combining progged-out virtuosity with lead-heavy riffs, dynamic tidal waves, and frontman Darroh Sudderth's operatic vocals. Even when the volume lets up--as in the softer, spacier folds of "The Wife, The Kids, and the White Picket Fence" and "Say When"--Fair to Midland create sonic tidal waves big enough to level arenas.

With Fables From a Mayfly, Fair to Midland have truly delivered, capturing the kinetic energy of their live show while harnessing the array of influences that make them impossible to pigeonhole. "For the most part, our musical tastes are completely different," says Sudderth, who rounds out the band with guitarist Cliff Campbell, drummer Brett Stowers, bassist Jon Dicken, and keyboardist/electronics manipulator Matt Langley. "We've just gotten better at listening to each other over the years. All of our songs are just us trying to find a happy medium between what everyone in the band listens to--and I think that actually being able to do that is what makes us so different from a lot of other `rock' bands today."

Fair to Midland Proves they are the Best Up-and-coming Band this Year.......2007-07-06

Here's the quickie: Fair to Midland's "Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True" is a wonderful display of eclectic songs styles, haunting vocals and clever lyrics. You'll find it has a hard time leaving your CD player.

Now for the more in depth review. This release is the band's first major label debut. What does that mean for the sound? Well, you won't need to guess, when you can compare, since six of the tracks are re-released from their previous independent "Inter.Funda.Stifle." With a bigger budget, the band comes across as more polished and definitive.

They handle the heavy tracks like "Dance of the Manatee" with a practiced flurry, and lead us into slower-paced yet just as hauntingly powerful tunes, like "Say When", with an ease that is due in no small way to the vocalist, Darroh Sudderth, who shows with every syllable sung just how amazing of a range he has. The song that showcases his voice like no other would be "The Wolf Descends upon the Spanish Sahara," with his melodic wail sounding the best that it ever has.

Finally, too, is there a member of the band whose duties are labeled as "keys", and who is actually one the most integral parts of the band itself! Matt Langley's skilled sounds help give this band what so many others are missing. Cliff Cambell's guitar is nice and varied, and balanced well with Jon Dicken's bass lines that never get boring. Brett Stower's definitely shows off what drums can do for the music, as heard in "Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes." Also, the band has done well to add little bits of extra layers in between the songs that makes multiple play-throughs interesting!

The improved quality and the updated songs show us not only how far Fair to Midland has come, but their potential for future growth. The new songs on this album are as good as any they've done thus far. One would be hard pressed to find a definitive genre for this band; finally, an upcoming band with a sound all its own. "Fable's From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True" is the best album of the year so far, and well worth the purchase.

Goes beyond categorization.......2007-07-05

This incredible band has created an instant classic with this beautiful album. These guys are masters of jumping genres yet at the same time cannot be filed into any one specific genre. All I can say is that this is my favorite purchase this year and I could not be more pleased.

Fair to Midland is one of those bands that makes you do a double take. I have yet to come up with anything to compare them to that is really accurate. Fables From A Mayfly has a very unique sound, and to me is a
nice break from the well defined genres that everything else falls into.

The vocals were the first thing that caught my attention. As a long time fan, and someone active on forums and whatnot, I've had people ask me if FTM has multiple singers, or if any of the voices are synthesized. The answer to both questions is no. Darroh has one of the most amazing and versatile voices that I've ever heard. To see him in concert is something you'll never forget. For me, the voice caught my attention, and then the passion and the amazingly humble and friendly person behind the voice kept it.

I can't even pretend to know much about instruments, but I do know that FTM has a way of combining a bass, a guitar, some drums, and a keyboard in incredibly intriguing ways. The complete combination of all 4 instruments plus Darroh's voice just seems to fit, but each individual piece is also unique and interesting in itself.

Fables From A Mayfly comes from 5 unique people, all with different tastes and styles, coming together to create mature album. Having followed this band for so long, I'll admit I could be a bit biased. I don't think I'm completely nuts though, since all of my roommates, having been exposed to FTM every time they rode in my car (which is often), have become huge fans.

Fair To Midland- The next big thing.......2007-07-01

I Recently purchased this CD and i would have to say that Fair To Midland has one of the most unique and distinctive sounds. The CD is loaded with "single" quality hits like "Dance of the Manatee","Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes","Kyla Cries Cologne" and my absolute favorite is "vice/versa." Besides the fact that the band sounds awesome they would have to be a great band due to the fact Serj Tankian from System of a Down signed them to his record label.

Musical Prodigies.......2007-06-30

As soon as I got an e-mail from Serj Tankian last fall saying that he had a new band for System of a Down fans to check out, I immediately checked out the link, not knowing what to expect. Low and behold, I listened to Kyla Cries Cologne for the first time and immediately fell in love with the music this group produces. Being a learning piano player, but knowing much about what sounds good and what harmonizes well, Matt Langley has got to be one of the best piano players I've heard in a while. You don't get many bands that have piano in their songs anymore, but this band somehow fits the drums, guitars, keys, and chilling vocals altogether to create the perfect synergy of sound.

I, myself, am a very harsh critic of music, but with all honesty, I have to say that Fair to Midland can't be compared to any other band. Their sound is amazingly unique and they bring back a tone of pirates meets the renassaince meets fair/circus life...you have to hear the album in full to understand what I'm talking about. All the songs are amazing, but "A Wolf Descends on a Spanish Sahara" is probably my favorite at the moment. Like I've read in the forums, any band that can use the lyrics 'It smells like disaster' and make it sound good, HAS to be amazing. Listen all the way through the album for secret little interludes which are fun and exciting to listen to. GREAT CD, Purchase it now!

I am so glad I bought this CD with JAMIROQUAI's best hits (and plus some "extra" bonus songs are included).

If you like the sound of a sort of combo "jazz-rock" Cd then this is the one for you. JAMIROQUAI is a great band. It`s hard to truly define their sound, but whatever it is ,... it's GREAT!

As I said before, this band is a combo jazz-rock with a bit of alternative thrown in. The lead singer is AMAZING! The other band players are absolutely amazing too.

If you get this Cd, you wont be able to stop your feet from twitching to their beat. FUN!!!!!!

PS: if you have seen NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE then you will recognize track # 11!!---LOVE IT, and so will you!

One Of The Best Compilations.......2007-06-09

Jay K is a musical genius, and, this compilation cd proves it. My nineteen year old borrowed this cd, to put on his Ipod. That made me feel so cool.

Two new GREAT songs!.......2007-04-22

This review is written for the fans. You have all of the other songs on this album, but why buy the CD? The two new songs are AWESOME! I am especially a fan of "Radio" - it is the sexist tour de force about a threesome ever made. Granted, I am NOT into threesomes, but there is something about Jay singing, "Three's not a crowd, I'm a man, I'm a man". This song totally turns me on. Get yourself into the mindset before listening to it. Then, "Runaway" is just a great song, nothing hidden, no secret messages - just a great song. I can't wait for what they (or just Jay) comes up with next. Yes, you can download the songs "elsewhere", but give Jay and the band the benefit of the doubt and fork out the bucks for this album - it's a winner - and while you're at it, get the video DVD too, it rocks and has some videos that are hard to find. ENJOY!

Amazing Band.......2007-03-12

I first noticed Jamiroquai when MTV was playing the Virtual Instanity video from Traveling Without Moving. I was first blown away by the video itself because I am not the type of person who can watch a video repeatedly unless it is extremely unique. I was secondly surprised because a lot of white singers don't sing like that in America. Jay Kay has one of the most unique and soulful vocals I have ever heard. I was finally blown away by the band itself. After doing some research, I purchased Traveling Without Moving and every album before it. I also purchased every future album. It was interesting listening to how they changed over the years. I still don't understand why America has not embraced this band on a larger scale. This band has given me another outlet of music to listen to outside of Rap, R&B, and Neo-soul. Thank you for a breath of fresh air.

I know you already have all of their songs. . .just buy this anyway........2007-03-10

With the exception of the people who bought "Traveling Without Moving" when "Virtual Insanity" became a mainstream hit, there are very few, "Middle-of-the-road" Jamiroquoi fans. This means that if you're like myself, you probably already own all of their albums. Ergo, you probably already have many or all of the songs on this album. Let me say this however, having all the hits all in one place, on one disc, and even further, remixed is in of itself the reason to buy this album. They also included (I think) three new or previously unreleased tracks. The crappy thing about some 'Greatest Hits' collections is that groups ususally include songs that "they felt" should have been greatest hits, even though they weren't. This album shins that approach. Rather, Jay Kay (lead) demonstrates his connection to his audience by choosing the RIGHT songs for this collection. It rocks.

What's also crazy is that I really can't believe that I've been listening to Jamiroquai for 14 years. Have I gotten that old?

5 Star rating = I promise you will enjoy this product. No regrets.

Sometimes simple is better, a powerful album.......2007-04-07

I must admit that I'm one of those people that just didn't get Dylan. I liked many of his songs but actually prefered the cover versions to the originals and being more into the music rather than the lyrics, really didn't see what the fuss was about. Well I've gone back and revisited Bob and now I get it, both his folk flavored material and his band oriented works.

On The Times They Are A-Changeing Dylan manages with just acoustic guitar, occasional harmonica and Bob's ragged voice, to make one of his most powerfully emotional albums. Perhaps the darkest of his career, certainly the starkest and it's just beautiful. Beautiful in it's simplicity and beautiful in the directness of the oftimes sad and timeless stories he tells.This is Dylan's most overt protest album, quietly yet powerfully raging against social injustice. Now while I very much like Dylan's band oriented material such as Highway 61 Revisited or Desire or Blonde On Blonde this album, Dylan's third, is a distilled essence of pure Dylan. There arn't any frills or fat, no drums or overdubs. It's just Bob and has become my favorite album by him.

With God on our side.......2007-04-05

This album was originally released in 1964 and the messages are as true today as they were then. The third title in this album, "With God on our side", was never included on any of the Greatest Hits releases, and its only other release was in a 1995 live album. It is sad to note that the civil rights activism and anti war passions of the 60's do not exist today. Everyone needs to listen to this song especially the political leaders of the world. The last verse of the song is the most memorable:

"So now as I'm Leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war"

A darker side of Bob Dylan.......2007-01-11

Dylan's third album finds him writing songs with a heavily political bent, taking ideas from newspapers and setting them to old and new folk melodies. Though it lacks some of "Freewheeling"s light-hearted moments, "Times" comes across as more mature, often more emotionally moving, and darker. The title track became a Dylan anthem and concert staple. "Ballad Of Hollis Brown" is one of my personal favorites--the folk guitar and brooding story are perfect, with a clever ending. "One Too Many Mornings" is a bit darker on this disc than on "Nashville Skyline," but is also folkier. "Boots Of Spanish Leather" is an excellent and touching love song. "Hattie Carrol" is one of Dylan's most famous newspaper songs, and stirs feelings of racism and the fallibility of the justice system. The closer is somber and characteristic of the whole album, but I like the whole thing. Dylan's voice is good (better than on "Another Side of Bob Dylan") and the songs fit well together in the album's scheme. This is Dylan's last protest album, and sees Dylan at the top of his protest period. Recommended if you like acoustic folk, and suggested that you take a few listens to let it really sink in!

Classic Dylan and one of the best albums from the 1960s.......2007-01-07

This is one of the great albums from Dylan's first decade. The title tune should be in any Hall of Fame for American music of the last half of the 20th century.

"The Time They Are A-Changin'" is a song that speaks to the crosscutting debates of the 1960s. It provides voice for one perspective. But so, too, do other of the songs on this CD. "Ballad of Hollis Brown" and "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" can still bring anger, produce a sense of unfairness. "With God on Our Side" is a powerful statement regarding the manner in which religion can make some people feel superior to others, with whatever relevant God is on their side. "Only a Pawn in Their Game" suggests the reality of an elite manipulating the mass of people; whether or not one agree with the theme, the argument is well portrayed. So, too, "North Country Blues" has a statement to make.

There are, in addition, softer tunes, such as "One Too Many Mornings" and "Boots of Spanish Leather."

All in all, a must buy for those wanting to understand the full body of Bob Dylan's work. Perhaps the best of his pre-electric corpus.

Mandatory listening for all Americans........2007-01-06

A perfect album that was written way before my time, but still is absolutely relevant in every way today. Politics, Race, War, Employment, Depression, every topic is hear and clear.

It begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, when it was released, some of the music in oh-so-'80s synths sounds a bit dated. Yet this two-CD set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. even with the recognition he has received, prince is one of the underacknowledged geniuses of rock 'n roll. as prolific as dylan or neil young, prince seemingly shifts genres and styles effortlessly, always creating interesting music, almost without peer in the current pop music scene. from sly stone to little richard to p-funk to joni mitchell, prince has assimilated and made his own a ridiculous range of styles and sounds.
this album is my favorite. it spans everything from gorgeous ballads [adore, slow love] to topical commentary [title track] to all-out funk [housequake] to pure pop [starfish and coffee]. prince is a brilliant vocalist and performer as well, ripping out santana-like solos and easily adopting a variety of vocal styles.

There are a lot of reviews out there that raise this album to almost unapproachable levels. Bottom line: this is a solid - one of the most solid - offerings from Prince. Lot's of pop, rock, and funk songs.

I still say 1999 and Purple Rain stand out as the best of Prince but Sign 'O' the Times should still be in your collection.

One huge negative has to be mentioned!!! This cd needs to be remastered. The sound is awful. I finally burned it into ITunes and changed the equalizer settings to get a half way decent sound but remastering would be a great idea.

Absolutely Essential Listening.......2007-01-15

People forget that Prince is, first-and-foremost, a great "Pop" composer. The range delivered on this album from "Play in the Sunshine" to "Starfish and Coffee" (the Man in his Beatle phase of songwriting) is astounding, and probably very difficult to perform. Prince makes it look, or sound, simple-as-pie. This was one of the early indications that Pop Music had a true Genius in its midst.

In fact, I'd say the five "essential" albums any new fan of the Artist MUST listen to would be 1999, PURPLE RAIN, AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY, PARADE, and SIGN '0' THE TIMES--period. ((Of course, to understand Origin, you'd have to go back to DIRTY MIND and CONTROVERSY, both very impressive records, trust me!))

Quite an impact, and certainly no small feat, considering Prince composed/produced/played ALL instruments excluding the live cuts. What a great listening experience! A fine time, a fine time...

good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

Even if you're not well-versed in Portuguese fado music, it's easy to be swayed by its rich, mournful sense of emotion. Mariza, one of the genre's premiere contemporary vocalists, see fado as an international language. The cd of the concert was excellent, but the dvd documents and illuminates the history of the beautiful fado music of Portugal in such a meaningful way. Truly a masterpiece.

Lovely Portuguese fados - nice CD + DVD set.......2007-04-07

The concert CD is lovely, with Mariza soaring over a band led by Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum (known for his recent live work with Caetano Veloso...) They work through a variety of fado styles, from the weepiest love songs to giddy folk dances, each style performed with good humor and power.

The added bonus documentary film DVD is a real treat, not only for the glimpses of Mariza and other contemporary fado stars, but for its look back at the roots of the genre and its meaning to Portuguese society. Particularly interesting is its examination of fado's political and social significance -- originally the fado was type of left-wing protest song, but it was subverted in the 1930s by the dictatorship that ruled Portugal until the mid-1970s. The junta made fado music into a propaganda tool, emphasizing romantic love and family values, to the exclusion of older themes about hard work and hard times. After the dictatorship toppled, fado fell into disrepute, but regained popularity in the 1980s and '90s when a new generation cast about for a way to guard Portuguese culture from the encroachments of globalized (American) popular entertainment. A fascinating story, laced with many soulful performances.

Excellent value for money.......2007-04-03

This is an excellent package...this is Mariza at her best..her vocals are emotional and captivating, and the bonus DVD documentary about the Story of Fado is so very informative and entertaining at the same time, including not only live footage of Mariza and her contemporaries, but also rare live footage of the doyenne of the genre, Amalia Rodrigues. That said, I am particularly peeved by the comments of your reviewer, D.Parr "dtakoma" who says that the CD could not be downloaded on his MP3 player and calls it a "crime". Mr. Parr, I just downloaded my CD onto my "IPod" with no trouble at all. Perhaps your player is faulty, or you may have an import copy from Europe or a "bootleg"? The true "crime" is in misleading people!!!

With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.

I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.

I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!

Superb concert.......2005-08-02

I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.

Too Studied.......2005-06-22

Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)

Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.
