4 out of 5 stars Best and Worst of Savoy Brown.......2007-06-17

Okay, so Lion's Share isn't the best Savoy Brown album. But it's damn close and is one of the three least known. (Along with Live at the Record Plant 1975 and Boogie Brothers) It's a very even album with 4 outstanding cuts: rockers; Shot in The Head, Second Try and Wolf's Howling For My Darling and the pain filled Love Me Please.

Jack The Toad suffers from weak singing by Jackie Linton and mediocre songwriting. Buying the 2 together, I believe is the cheapest way to get Lion's Share.

5 out of 5 stars Just Coz' You Got The Blues.......2004-08-28

Well since 1999 this CD was *finally* released much to the happiness of many. If you don't find it on AMAZON.COM, just look around - it's out there. And it's a gem from 1973. This is Kim's most fun album, with so many great tunes... try sitting still to "Ride On Babe". And the cover artwork - wow. Get this, I had an artist redraw it, poster size. It came out so good I took it to a Savoy Brown gig, and had the roadie take it in the back after the show. Kim not only signed it, but had me come back stage to meet the band. Ok, how does it get better than THAT? God Bless Kim Simmonds for all the great music he brings to us Live. And for David (is every guy associated with the band named Dave?) Anstey for all the great album covers. It's the art of the '70's.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-04-14

This is probably the best of my collection of Savoy Brown. By the way selecting only one of all of Savoy Brown is very difficult to say the least because more than half of what they put down on vinyl/CD is outstanding but if I had to pick just one , this would be it. I have a request: I want on CD format (1)Wildfire , (2)Savage Return .Dreams do come true , please re-issue these classics.

4 out of 5 stars Well, I'll Be Blowed!! It's Jack the Toad!!!.......2003-12-03

An epic of the Wild West....a dusty street....two lusty gunfighters fight it out to the finish....and the singer is....British??? That's "Jack the Toad," the title track from the most fun album Savoy Brown ever recorded. Imagine Phil Collins singing the blues, and you've got Jackie Lynton, who is veddy, veddy, veddy British. How British is he? Well, mate, he's just the sort of chap who'd fancy a coupla pints (not "just the one," doncher know!) and a game of darts over a plate of bangers and mash (or fish and chips) down to the local pub. In fact, "Comin' Down Your Way" sounds like it's coming straight from the corner bar, with Paul Raymond's tinkling saloon piano and Lynton's bouncing, goodtime vocals. "Ride on Babe" features a rare (for the time period), early Kim Simmonds vocal, and finds the guitar master blowing a mean harp as well. Well, I'll be blowed!! Other highlights include the tricky wordplay of "Casting My Spell," Kim's fantastic (guitar) soloing on "Just Cos' You Got the Blues Don't Mean You Gotta Sing," and "Some People," and, best of all, Jackie's wonderful vocal melodramatics on the title song, the best Western epic sung by a Brit since "Theme From an Imaginary Western," sung with great feeling by Felix Pappalardi on Mountain's Mountain Climbing LP. Great!! Yes, I know this album is very, very difficult to find (I got my copy from Russia, of all places!), but do search diligently; the pub-rocking, good-time wonders which await are well worth it, or I'll be Blowed!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......1999-05-11

I remember this album, unfortunately my ex-wife got them all. If this was available today I'd buy it again. Just saw Savoy Brown live in a small club, Kim Simmonds still has all his chops! Miss that music.

4 out of 5 stars Comin' Down Your Way to play some Rock & Roll..........2007-01-24

Wow, how do you give this classic album a bad review? Yes, the amazing Dave Walker had just left the band after Lion's Share, and Kim hit the road with yet another line up. But oh my, the classics. With Jack(ie) Lynton leading vocals, Paul Raymond on drums, Dave Bidwell on drums and Andy Pyle holding down the basslines, Savoy turned out a haunting concept album of sorts.
"Coming Down Your Way" starts off the album with a good Jackie Lynton. Kim takes the vocal lead on "Ride On Babe" and you feel like you're on the mechanical horse on the album cover. The next song is the real blues gem, "Hold Your Fire". It's one of my favorite Savoy Brown songs of all time.
Paul Raymond borrowed a mellotron from the Moody Blues. The boys covered "Endless Sleep" from Jody Reynolds and made it their own... Lynton's raspy British vocals were perfect. The second half of the short release (46 minutes) has more laidback blues & smooth vocals from Kim Simmonds, including "Just Cos' You Got the Blues Don't Mean You Gotta Sing", a nearly 6 minute jam worth the price of the album alone.

And of course, there's the title song, "Jack the Toad" that they should have combined with the Red Rider's "Panama Red" (and the Beatle's Rocky Raccoon) and made into a movie. It's as magical as David Anstey's gatefold album cover, which folds down to give a full length cosmic cowboy with futurist guns and a mechanical horse in the background. I had a local artist make me a poster of this, and had Kim sign it after a concert in Colorado Springs. Kim invited me backstage to meet the band, and I have the utmost respect for the guy.

The tour premiered in the US before selling out most of Europe (with ZZ Top and Status Quo along the way). Not long afterwards, Dave Bidwell lost his battle with the bottle, and Kim got bored and disbanded the band. Another era lost. Another one started.

Jack the Toad is an essential piece of the Kim Simmond's catalog. If you're lucky enough to be a fan of his music, go on ebay and find a copy of the original 1973 LP, on London's Parrot label. You'll love it!

1 out of 5 stars Just Cous You Have The Blues.......2006-07-15

The day this album came out my buddies and i ran to a friends house to listen to the new Savoy Brown album.A group of L.A.hippies had control of the stereo listening to Hot Tuna.We explained that this was legendary guitarist Kim Simmons. Then we bumed rushed the stereo and began to listen. The guitar playing is always dynimite but the singer was a pure embarrasment.Kims Ride on Babe was the vocal highpoint. We all were in aggreement to put a new side on after Just cous you have the blues dont mean you have to sing.Stay away, go for the Chris Youlden years.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic CD!!!.......2006-03-24

I have been looking for this CD for years without any success and I was ecstatic when I found it here. The same goes for Lion's Share. I had all of Savoy Brown's collection except these 2 and now I finally have them. I also enjoyed the bonus tracks included on the CD. There are some very good live performances on this CD. I highly recommend this CD to all old school ROCKERS, it is really great!!!

On the sixth annual migration of the Great American H.O.R.D.E., and after what would prove to be the most successful in the tour's history, tour founders Blues Traveler decided to leave their baby stateside and embark instead on a three-week tour of Europe. Blues Traveler decided to pass the torch to one of last year's surprise guests, Neil Young. Despite his firm anti-taping policy at his lone appearance on the 1996 H.O.R.D.E., the veteran of the road softened his stance when approached by the tour organizers and ended up headlining all thirty dates. At the same time that veteran bands were departing the tour, many newer acts were finding themselves exposed to scores and scores of fans. Contents: 1) Neil Young - When Your Lonely Heart Breaks 2) Primus - Shake Hands With Beef 3) Toad the Wet Sprocket - Come Down 4) Beck - JackAss 5) Morphine - I Know You 6) Big Head Todd & the Monsters - Please Don't Tell Her 7) Squirrel Nut Zippers - Got My Own Thing Now 8) Blues Traveler - Carolina Blues 9) Soul Coughing - Soft Serve 10) Kula Shaker - Tatva 11) Be Folds Five - One Angry Dward & 200 Solemn Faces 12) Leftover Salmon - Better 13) Medeski Martin and Wood - Night Marchers 14) Cake Like - Lorraine's Car 15) Eric Schenkman and the Chrysalids - Another Day

1 out of 5 stars Digitally Remastered? From A Cassette Tape Maybe............2004-01-14

This album should have stayed in the vaults, but obviously someone was out to make a buck. First the sound is in mono & way below average even by bootleg standards (fair to good mono soundboard for all you Hotwacks fans out there). Second the vocals of Jackie Lynton (now there's a household name) are turned way up in the mix (several notches above the music) and are almost unlistenable. To say they s#ck would be a compliment. Lastly, there is only one reason to listen to any post-Dave Peverett line-up of Savoy Brown and that's Kim Simmmond's guitar playing.
Unfortunately Simmond's guitar is so low and distant in the mix you need a CSI, FBI or CIA trained audio tech to locate it.
All joking aside, even the most diehard Savoy Brown fan will have a tough time listening to this album from start to finish. And repeated listenings...I have no clue how many masochistic Savoy Brown fans are out there.

3 out of 5 stars Great Music, Poor sound.......2001-05-19

The music on this CD is great, the jamming is there, the energy and fun that Savoy Brown had is evident, and its the only live recording I know of of Hellbound Train. Is it worth having, yes, for dedicated SB fans but the sound quality is sure to dissappoint. The bass is muddied and too out front, the drums just have no snap, and worse of all, Kim Simmons guitar sounds like somebody forgot to turn up his amp. You really have to perk your ears to hear him at all on many cuts. Overall, it sounds like somebody recorded this concert from outside the building on a portable cassette player, in a barrel. I did enjoy a listen to this based on the music and historical content but I just won't be able to repeat this cd to many times because of the sound quality.
