Three years after the mean-spirited Laughter & Lust proved he'd lost all taste for the pop life, Jackson grows up gracefully by adding lyrics to the wide-screen compositions that have been his strength since a dazzling "After Midnight" turned up on Hal Willner's tribute to Thelonious Monk. Here guest vocalist Taylor Carpenter turns in a strong performance, while "Lullaby" and "The Man Who Wrote Danny Boy" are art songs of invention and beauty. In this context, his four instrumental Nocturnes are breathtaking. Jeff Bateman

Having already come close to beating Graham Parker, Elvis Costello, and Louis Jordan at their own games, Joe Jackson made a play for becoming the Cole Porter of his generation with this 1982 collection. Actually that's a bit of a cheap shot, especially considering what a refreshingly innovative album this was. Jackson truly hit his stride with a memorable set that combines new technology and classic songwriting. From the infectious "Chinatown" to the hits "Stepping Out" and "Breaking Us in Two," the album is a showcase for killer hooks wrapped up in shiny keyboards and Latin-tinged percussion. Small wonder that Jackson waited two decades to attempt a sequel. --Bill Forman

Still One Of Joe Jackson's Best Albums........2006-12-03
1982 was the year that Joe Jackson really stepped into his own. With his album "Night and Day", he moved beyond the New Wave/Punk sound of his earlier work and to quote this album's opening track, "stepped into another world".
"Night and Day" finds Jackson experimenting with Jazz and Latin styles as well as funk and R&B. The album draws from a number of influences such as Duke Ellington and Cole Porter as well as hints of Vince Guaraldi (as heard on "Cancer") and Santana ("Target"). The album can also be loosely labeled as a 'concept album' as one side of the original LP was titled the "Night Side" while the other was called the "Day Side". The tracks on the "Night Side" are the upbeat numbers and are crossfaded to form a continuous whole. Included in this half of the album are the Latin-influenced "Another World" and "Target", the cinematic almost psychedelic "Chinatown", the funky "TV Age" which may sound silly now but actually did speak on what was then the current stage of television. Cable TV was slowly beginning to come into fashion during the time this track pretty much said it all ("there's no need for movies, we've got HBO in the TV age"). The "Night Side" closes with Joe Jackson's biggest and best known hit "Steppin' Out" which is still a classic to this day.
The slower ballad pieces make up the "Day Side" of the album which opens with another classic hit "Breaking Us In Two". This is followed by the aforementioned "Cancer" which features some of Joe's best Jazz-influenced piano work. The album closes with two piano-based ballads, the controversial and misunderstood "Real Men" and the sentimental "Slow Song".
"Night and Day" still ranks among Joe Jackson's greatest work. Every track on this album is a winner and features some great playing, songwriting and arrangements. For many including this reviewer, this was Joe Jackson's peak which still has yet to be topped.
A great classic of the early '80s and just a great album, period.
joe jackson reaches commercial appeal.......2006-09-14
i don't think he liked that fact but its the truth.this was commercially a very sucessful album for him.though it lacks the power LOOK SHARP! and I'M THE MAN it spun 2 big hits STEPPIN OUT
and BREAKING US IN TWO.the album is put together so well and the music is very refreshing .it lacks guitar but the keyboards and the precussion makes up for that and JACKSON's long time bass player GRAHAM MABY is well heard on this one.A SLOW SONG which one of my favorite lyrics is the final track here.great cd
I can't say I never listened to an album where I truly hated all the songs.......2006-09-14
However, there's always a first time, and this is it. I remember on Friday September 17, 1982 was the first time I heard "Stepping Out", and I hated it right then and there. It's extremely melancholy, and I had a bad day at school with the kids laughing at me because I couldn't read the blackboard in music class because I needed new glasses. I was still stewing over that, and then this song came on. To be honest I felt that Joe Jackson was going down hill in the 80's as I enjoyed his first album "Look Sharp" in 79, but in 1980 I heard "Pretty Girls" from the soundtrack of "Times Square", and I sensed that he was going downhill fast. I kind of liked "Breaking Us In Two", but not for long as it reeks of divorce, and leaves the woman cynical, and more proving herself to be manly and tough, and the guy is taken for everything, and left in holey underwear. I found the rest of this to be really horrible as with the first song "Another World" It starts out as a possible dance tune, but falls flat, and then goes downhill from there. I can only say that there was only one other album that could come close to a disaster as this, and that was Frank Zappa's:"Meets The Mothers Of Prevention". Girls and women may like this, and sensitive men, but I feel I can be sensitive, but I thouroughly hate this.
One of the best albums ever recorded.......2006-06-04
This is a fantastic album from start to finish. My favorite song on this album is "Real Men" but the rest of the album is so fantastic you can't believe what your hearing. The other notable songs are breaking us in two, TV age (a really funny song) which is my opinion not part of the song title & the radio hit Steppin out' The hair stands on the back of my neck everytime I hear this album!!!
A Bold New Step For One of Punk's Angry Young Men.......2006-06-03
This 1982 album took one of punk's "angry young men" in a new direction, gave him his biggest hit single, and all without charges of "selling out."
Here Joe Jackson pays tribute to New York City while channeling Cole Porter and the results are marvelous. From the classy pop sheen of "Steppin' Out" (his only top ten single in the US where it reached #6 near the end of 1982, to the pensive heartbreak of "Breaking Us In Two" (which reached #18 in the winter of 1983) to the Latin jazz bop of "Target," to ruminations on changing perceptions on masculinity in the haunting "Real Men" the album showcased sharp, smart song writing, and top notch band, all of which has help up nearly a quarter of a century later. Certainly a change of pace from the new wave/punk spirit of his earlier outings, but "Night and Day" finds Jackson making the transition in spades.

Money grab from Universal.......2005-12-26
I can only reiterate the complaints other reviewers have stated about this reissue. With all the nice repackaging jobs that have been done with classic albums (Sonic Youth's "Goo", ABC's "Lexicon of Love" (UK 2xcd)...), this one definitely falls to the bottom of the barrel. Of course, the album is a classic, as every song on it could be considered a "single" and received (deservedly) radio airplay. So with all the technology available now to improve the sound from the original tapes, you would think they'd do this one right. Wrong. The sound quality is just ok, perhaps an improvement over the original CD, but not an overwhelming improvement as with some other reissues (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, "Dark Side of The Moon"). Part of the problem is that it's just another CD, no 2nd layer of DVD-audio or SACD DSD on this. So no Hybrid disc that would really improve the quality of the audio.
This release also contains no bonus material on the first disc, but puts it all on the 2nd, which for some is good because it retains the original album feel, but for others is a waste of disc space. If there was stellar material to add it wouldn't be much of a problem, but I think that the folks at Universal realized the bonus material didn't quite fit. For the bonus material on the second disc they add the songs from the Mike's Murder soundtrack that had vocals and one side of the live double album that heavily featured songs from "Night & Day". Why not just digitally remaster these & release them as complete albums? Of course, they probably will eventually get around to it & then you'll have to shell out some more $$$ to Universal to get them.
While it's nice to get demo material for this recording, these demo versions have to sound closer to the actual album versions than any demos I've heard. The "demos" are basically the album tracks, but with just piano, Joe's voice & synths/drums, no additional instruments.
To add to all these shortcomings, there actually is material from this period that could have been released on this reissue as bonus material, but wasn't. First, the spanish versions released on the "Real Men" EP & used as b-sides on singles (El Cancer, El Blanco, & Un Otro Mundo). Then there was also the 12" Extended version of TV Age & I think there was another 12" version or perhaps instrumental version of one of the other album songs. None of this studio material was included, not to mention any of the unreleased live material from this time.
The packaging is a double digipack, which won't stand up over time (likely to tear) & is annoying to have to pull out of the sleeve (which has the actual track listing on it) just to open it up & pull out the discs before you can play them. The included booklet has the obligatory new liner notes from someone no one's heard of, and they do include information on musicians for tracks, but there's only 1 picture of one of the original 7"s & no info on the original singles or album's release (pictures, dates & countries released, charting etc.). The liner notes do include the song lyrics though.
So what reason is there to fork over the exorbitant amount they are asking for this "expanded" issue rather than ripping it? None. And the music industry wants to know why CD sales are plummeting. It's not just because of file-sharing. It's because the music industry releases pathetic stuff like this & asks you to fork over a day's wage for it.
extras are great!.......2005-02-03
I have to disagree with some of the other reviews... the second disc of this deluxe edition contains some great stuff which is hard/impossible to find otherwise. First, the remastered original disc sounds fantastic. When you get to the second disc, you find five tracks that JJ fans haven't had access to for years... the five "Mike's Murder" songs (those with vocals). The demos of the N&D sessions are close to the final mixes, but fun to hear. and the live tracks are great (the live disc they're from is hard to find, but fantastic).
Considering Amazon partners are offering this two disc set for the price of one disc, you shouldn't pass this up.
A most frustrating Night.......2005-01-06
"Night And Day" was Joe Jackson's bid for high-brow acceptance after feeling boxed in by the stylistic limitations of New Wave. The liner notes to "Beat Crazy" spoke to an open frustration with rock and roll as an art form, and the "Jumping Jive" ditched any pretense towards rock by serving up a platter of competent big band and swing classics. (Predating the 90's swing revival by better than a decade!)
Those elements, combined with a move from London to New York, inspired Jackson's compositions for his fourth original album. Here, he ditched the red-hot sound of "Look Sharp" for the cool blue of Latin Rhythms and a complete absence of lead guitars. It was as far away from skinny-tie pop as Gershwin was from Ozzy Osbourne. He also decided to conceptualize the album, making side one the "Night Side" and side two the "Day Side."
The more rhythm oriented material appeared on the first half, reflecting Jackson's fascination with the glamour of NYC's nightlife, concluding with his massive hit, "Stepping Out." While songs like "Another World" and the sardonic "TV Age" (a close cousin to "I'm The Man" and "Sunday Papers") made the commentary of Jackson's break from the musical mainstream, the second side was where he proved his mettle as a classic tunesmith. The key ballads, "Breaking Us In Two," "Real Men" and "A Slow Song" hit the bulls-eye in Jackson's aspirations to emulate the great New York songwriters that "Night And Day" so obviously targeted. "Real Men" (eventually covered by Tori Amos) built up to a Phil Spector-worthy climax while questioning gender confusion and homophobia. Along with "It's Different For Girls," it is one of his best ballads, and sums up just how deeply Jackson wanted to pull away from typical pop structures. On "Night And Day," Jackson proved that he was more than just a smart-aleky young rock star.
Unfortunately, the "Deluxe Version" of this album leaves a LOT to be desired. The only song in the demo tracks that is at all revealing is "Breaking Us In Two," played more uptempo and Steely Dan sounding than in its final, more stately form. It is nice to have the "Mike's Murder" vocal tracks in one place, but why include one fourth of an already existing live CD to fill out the disc? It smacks of laziness on Universal's part (and their excuse to take "Joe Jackson Live 1980/86" out of print). There really isn't anything here other than the remastered original album - which sounds absolutely amazing, I must add - to justify the exorbitant price hike.
5 stars for the original album.
3 stars for the unimaginative "bonus" material.
5 stars for album, 2 stars for unimaginative bonus tracks.......2004-05-23
The Deluxe Editions from haven't really impressed me all that much. With the exception of Elton John's SACD hybrid "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", most of them have had bonus tracks that could have been added to a single disc reissue at a better price. "Night and Day" is no exception. One of Joe Jackson's seminal, best and most popular albums, the 24 bit remastere sounds terrific. The liner notes are a marked improvement over many of the others in the same series although it appears that most of the info and interviews were drawn from older material.
The problem I have is the bonus tracks. While I appreciate having the demos for much of "Night and Day", there isn't a huge or marked difference between them and the finished product. Occasionally the songs will be in slightly different time signatures with a quicker pulse but they resemble the final versions very closely. I could see reissuing "Night and Day" with the demos but A&M took the lazy way out there with the rest of the bonus tracks.
The second disc (aside from the demos) consists of the songs from the underrated "Mike's Murder" and an entire side of "Live 1980-86". While I appreciate having the "Mike's Murder" tracks, why not include the entire album (including the instrumental material) and, perhaps, material that didn't make the album that might have been recorded vs. having live tracks from a CD that most Joe Jackson fans already own? If you're going to reissue the album, include live tracks from the same year as "Night and Day" that didn't make the album. The reason this wasn't done is because A&M wanted to take the simple, inexpensive way out. It's a pity as this had so much more potential.
Still, the sound on "Night and Day" itself is terrific. If you want all of "Mike's Murder" it's available on the "Joe Jackson Collection" an import that has most of his hits spread over two discs and "Mike's Murder" on a third bonus disc. All three discs are also remastered in 32 bit which means they sound warmer and with slightly better clarity than this CD.
Jackson's best gets even better!.......2004-02-08
Remastering any classic Joe Jackson disc is a great idea, and even greater when re-released as a 2-CD set with bonus tracks and demos. NIGHT AND DAY:DELUXE EDITION not only celebrates his finest hour, it also includes five superb songs from the long-out-of-print 1983 MIKE'S MURDER soundtrack. In addition, the five best cuts from his vital JOE JACKSON LIVE 1980/86 album close it out, introducing new listeners to a remarkable artist at perhaps the loftiest of his many peaks.
Of all of Jackson's ever-changing forays, NIGHT AND DAY is arguably his masterpiece, lyriclly and musically. "Another World," "Target," and "Cancer" each sizzle with percussion-filled Latin jazz stylings and tough, honest commentaries. "TV Age" is the angry young Joe spewing venom over mankind's obsession with the idiot box, while "Chinatown" brilliantly fuses an Oriental sound with a bossanova rhythm.
The smash hit "Steppin' Out" is still its bounciest number, a sharp contrast to the serene mood captured immediately thereafter. "Breaking Us In Two" and "A Slow Song," with its conclusion building to a grand cimax, are utterly gorgeous ballads. But nothing compares to "Real Men;" raising serious questions about the changing societal perceptions of masculinity and femininity, this could be Jackson's most significant tune. Digital remastering of the original analog tapes give NIGHT AND DAY a new-found potency without diminishing its urbane flair.
Keeping in theme with this masterwork, also included are concert recordings from the subsequent Night and Day tour (present on the 2-disc LIVE 1980/86). We get to experience why a Jackson live performance is nothing short of a revelation, as he fearlessly rearranges his studio versions into fresh, exciting interpretations far different from the originals. From an organ-powered "On Your Radio" to a down-tempoed spin of his reggae-ish "Fools In Love," the realization of his vast scope begins to surface. Jackson's classic "Is She Really Going Out With Him" is spectacularly reinvented as street-corner a cappella, while the set-closing "Look Sharp" is explosive, featuring the exceptional percussion work of Sue Hadjopolous. Her presence throughout this era give these already-vibrant songs their distinct personality.
But the cherry-on-top is the inclusion of the MIKE'S MURDER soundtrack. Impossible to locate for nearly two decades, the tracks clearly are an extension of the original Night and Day sessions. The uptempo "Cosmopolitan" sets the tone, while "1-2-3-Go (This Town's a Fairground)," a hit single if ever there should have been, kicks it into overdrive. "Laundromat Monday" combines reggae with smoky lounge jazz, "Memphis" is a thumping, soulful rocker, and the tender ballad "Moonlight" round out this welcome batch of vignettes.
For me personally, Jackson embodies everything I find most irresistable about music: blunt, intelligent lyrics, expert musicianship, and a carefree willingness to blaze his own trails. Hopefully ths mini-"box-set" can introduce others to the work of an amazingly gifted songwriter/ musician: one who's always been a step or two ahead of the curve, and whose genius becomes more obvious every passing year.

Like a less hefty Meatloaf, Joe Jackson goes the Bat Out of Hell II route with this sequel to his most commercially successful album, 1982's Night and Day. Fans of Jackson's earlier ode to New York City are afforded moments of déjà vu. Pop hooks and programmed Latin rhythms abound, and the signature chords from "Steppin' Out" find their way into "Glamour and Pain" and "Stay." But Jackson has new tricks up his sleeve, including a potent string quartet and character-driven songs with vocals from Marianne Faithfull (on the darkly operatic "Love Got Lost"), Iranian singer Sussan Deyhim (on the no less elegiac "Why"), and transvestite protégée Dale DeVere (on the Pet Shop Boys-like "Glamour and Pain"). Still, it's Jackson who delivers the sucker punch with his bittersweet delivery on "Hell of a Town," "Stranger Than You," and the particularly barbed "Dear Mom." The sequel gimmick may not get Jackson another hit, but it should reintroduce people to an artist whose skills as a songwriter, composer, and performer are as sharp as ever. --Bill Forman

Professional yet emotional.......2006-11-01
I'll just say that if you're remotely familiar with Joe Jackson you should have this album... Disregard the extreme fans who seem to be disappointed; this is a solid pop/rock album that will satisfy the most demanding ears. "Stranger Than You" is a reason enough to listen to this CD.
update on an original classic.......2006-09-14
this cd lacks the commercial sucess of the first NIGHT and DAY album but it is certainly as brilliant.STRANGER THAN YOU is a great song should have been a hit describes NYC perfect.HAPPYLAND
is facinating a little sarcastic even for joe jackson but a good song.good disc.
GREAT ALBUM.......2005-10-03
I'M NOT SURE WHY FOLKS ARE GIVING THIS LESS THAN 4 STARS (1 STAR COMON')! I'VE REALLY ENJOYED LISTENING TO THIS ONE. IT'S NOT HIS BEST BUT I WOULD CERTAINLY RECOMMOND IT PARTICULARLY IF YOU LIKED NIGHT AND DAY. AND YES I ALSO HAVE A BUNCH OF JJ CD'S,THIS WAS MY 9TH AND I HAVE BE BUYING HIS ALBUMS FOR ABOUT 22 YEARS NOW.
FABULOUS!.......2005-09-18
Amazed at some of these reviews here on Amazon. If anyone expects Joe to do the same thing over and over, don't buy this cd! People that expected this release to be "Just like Night and Day" are fools. "Foolish songwriting"? How so? Makes you feel like you're walking right down the streets of New York!
Borderline masterpiece.
Why Joe, why!?.......2005-09-01
Ouch- this album was a big disappointment to me! I'm a huge Joe Jackson fan (I think I have all his studio albums just about), but this one just goes nowhere fast! Pretentious operatic swells, contrived lyrics, instrumentation more at place on a Lite Rock station. It's really a big surprise for me- esp. since his "Live in NY" album he put out earlier that year is absolutely AMAZING! Joe and two other guys on stage, the essence of a live rock/jazz trio, and all the power and brilliance you come to expect from The Man! Oh well----every artist has to go off a navel-gazing tangent some time. Night and Day II was Jackson's turn to do so.

I love this one..........2006-02-15
I've enjoyed Joe Jackson's music for years and have followed along through the myriad of style changes and maturing of his music. It's a shame he gets lumped in with "those new wave guys" when really he bears little resemblance to the groups of the late 70's early 80's who stayed in those niches. I wish this album - along with Heaven & Hell, his diverse song cycle on the seven deadly sins - were linked into his full "pop" catalog instead of in the classical section where, frankly, the music won't find many new ears amongst the wider audience and precious few adventurous ears amongst the classical audience willing to check it out. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen!
Haunting and Lyrical, but not for all tastes.......2000-06-01
Music for the dark night of the soul. The kind of thing that makes you want to call the artist and ask, "My God-- are you all right? " Some of this is beautiful, some of it is darkly touching, and every time I hear the first bars of "Flying" ("the older I get, the more stupid I feel") I can't help but laugh. Mortality, age, hope, creation-- this is a cd for grownups, and for people who don't mind music that is impossible to pigeonhole by genre. It's not something that I listen to often, but I still consider it one of the essentials in my collection.
Different for Joe.......1999-09-12
I like to think of myself as pretty open-minded, and willing to follow Joe most anywhere he would go musically, but I was rather disappointed in this. Emphasis is on his slower, more introspective side. No more snotty tirades--he's growing, OK, but a lot of this music I think is pretty, but not terribly memorable. I like "Ever After" and "Danny Boy"; the rest is very slick stuff with not much substance. The production is very clean to the point of antiseptic, electric keyboards and synthesized strings all about. Background music for sure. I was much more impressed with "Heaven and Hell", his next project, I believe--good ideas, good songs, novel arrangements.
Mesmerizing music for the night.......1999-04-16
Night Music haunts me every time I listen to it. Jackson has crafted a masterpiece that needs to be experienced with the lights out. An elegaic mood is created by his songs. Enjoy!!!!
Nothing Better After Midnight.......1998-09-16
One of the principal reasons I am a Joe Jackson fan is that he seems constantly to recreate himself and to explore new musical vistas, teaching me something along the way about jazz, classical, etc. He does it again on this album, a mood piece if there ever was one: best listened to between midnight and sunrise. The songs are perfectly crafted and rendered and most of them linger in my mind for days.

Joe Jackson's Night Music.......2007-02-02
This is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever found! It seems to have gone unsung, but should be known and acknowledged far and wide. I'm a fan of Joe's work and this is my favorite work from him.
