Product Description
Reissued 1976 album. One of the songs that he recorded was 'Jungle Rock' a fashionable up-tempo rocker. Released in1958, the single was not a success, but years later it was re-discovered and re-released, reaching No.3 in the UK charts in 1976. An album was also recorded, it features the smash hit with a batch of classic 50s rockabilly tracks.

5 out of 5 stars smooth (but not boring).......2005-05-18

I first heard and purchased this album when it was released and since then have gone through several (vinyl) copies, as I have played it numerous times over the years for myself and friends. What a sonic treat to finally have it beautifully remastered on CD.

The harmonic moods of Neil Larsen's organ combined with Buzz Feiten's guitar create a distinct, haunting, yet bright voice. During that period ('77-'81) Producer Tommy LiPuma was in his prime as a conduit for great talent (Brenda Russell, George Benson, Yellowjackets) and was adept at mining each player's unique talents for their better than best performance.

The tunes here are excellent and inventive. There is a reoccurring 'pop hook' focus to most of these compositions which is typical of the catchy riff syndrome of most '70s and '80s jazz albums that were not in the fusion camp, yet somehow this collection trancends that trend's predictability, mainly due to the vibrant group of musicians who's warm and dynamic interplay will inspire repeated listens.

The follow up LP "High Gear" (released the following year) could be described with an almost identical review, so consider them book end releases, and nab both titles

I would also advise burning back up copies since you'll most likely be playing (and sharing) them for a long time to come.

5 out of 5 stars Non-Duplicated Creativity.......2004-07-06

I love the music of Neil Larsen. I first encountered him on Portland OR FM radio in the late 70s, and have never tired of hearing the tunes form ALL his albums. Many have this incredible latin beat to them . . . I can't help but being energized. Jungle Feaver, Smooth Talk, Through Any Window - they all are the best IMO. I would love to see him perform live. I wish he would put out another record.

Just had to tell all about this artist. The best.

5 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Jazz Album of all Time (10 stars).......2004-02-24

I searched the internet for a long time before I finally found this on C.D. When it came in the mail, I put it on and it sounded amazing. The Analog to Digital transfer was Excellent. Warm and crystal clear just like the album. Neil Larsen is my favorite instrumental writer and this is his best work. Every song is a masterpiece. Most of the songs are played on the Hammond M3 organ and it is so wonderful to here that rare sound. Buzzy Feiten is in top form. Andy Newmark and Willie Weeks play there butts off and Michael Brecker's solo's are some of the best that I've ever heard him do. I had the pleasure of working with Neil on a project once and I was so blown away by his musical gift. I wrote up some basic charts, put them in front of him, pushed the record button and watched and listened as he played through the songs as if he'd been working on them for weeks. Every part was perfect and in it's place. His sensitivity to the music was amazing. I had run out of time when writing the charts and was not able to write out the last song. I apologized to Neil and asked if we could take a break while I wrote out the last song. He asked me for a piece of music notation paper and then asked me to role the tape. In the time that it took for the song to play through one time, He had written a perfect chart for the entire tune. It totally blew me away (I still have that chart somewhere). I so much wish that Neil would put out another recording like this one - Hammond organ, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Sax and his wonderful writing.

5 out of 5 stars buzz please re-acquaint yourself with Neil.......2003-02-15

It's simply the best Jazz fusion ever played. I can't seem to figure out why Buzz has avoided playing with Neil ever since. Perhaps it Buzz's obsession of training guitar tech how to use his tuning "system"....wake up Buzz...it's about the music...call Neil on the phone today and demand to do a project with him and release it on your web site ...so that we can enjoy it...

5 out of 5 stars Jungle Fever - Catch it........2002-09-04

Jungle Fever is an awesome work from Neil. I bought this on vinyl back in my high school days and while at college, went to see Neil perform in Raleigh, NC. while there, I got Neil to autograph the jacket on the vinyl. My storied past aside, it is so refreshing to see this material available on CD. The sound is tight and undoubtedly someof the best jazz fusion you'll ever hear.
There was some other guy at the Neil Laresn show named Jarraeu.

4 out of 5 stars Best kept.......2004-12-10

Lamb is an outstanding trip-hop band. Come on, admit it -- their music is beautiful, polished and textured, and it's a sign of the world's unfairness that people like Celine Dion outsell them. But I digress. "Best of Lamb 1996-2004: Best Kept Secrets" is a surprisingly good look back on the history of... well, one of electronica's best kept secrets.

A lot of "Best Of" albums stagger under the weight of personal preference -- meaning that the fans keep asking "Where is...? What happened to...? How could they not include...?" I didn't feel that way when listening to these sixteen chronological songs. While most Lamb songs are beautiful, these songs do a good job of showing their evolution from rough trip-hop to smooth, almost jazzy electronica.

The self-titled debut was a mix of the epic and rock-y -- "Cotton Wool" and "God Bless" are superb percussion-pop song with some trip-hop edge. "Best of Lamb" starts off dark, but gets... not exactly light, but more upbeat and less sprawling. One exceptional example is "Bonfire," a passionate, sweeping song that perfectly showcases Louise Rhodes' beautiful vocals.

Their style changed even more later on, moving further from their debut and into the realm of purer trip-hop -- less orchestral, less rock-y. "Gabriel" is a pretty song, and "Angelica" a gentle trip-hop-piano melody. They took that sound even further, and it's reflected in the finale of this album -- the trippy "Stronger" and the airy "Wonder."

It's definitely a good place to investigate if you're a Lamb virgin. If you have all four albums, however, it won't yield much that's new to you. But it's also a pleasant capsule look at their evolution as a band -- they started off sprawling and dark, and have (so far) become much jazzier and airier. Some of the song choices are a little obvious -- "Gabriel," for example, which apparently is a hit among romantics.

Lamb will probably never break into the No. 1 slot -- although stranger things have happened -- but their songs remain rich and beautiful, no matter which album you listen to. And as an introduction, either to the band or to albums you don't have, this is a pretty good one.

5 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secrets indeed..........2004-06-19

I listened to Lamb for the first time a long time ago (1998-9), for the first and only time I saw their "B-Side" video on MTV. Back then it was one of the coolest things for me, the video and the song. Unfortunately this type of music isn't very popular in Mexico when groups like Portishead, Massive attack and Tricky are practically unnoticed. Since I'm a big fan of their music, I actually own all of the other CDs, but I couldn't resist on buying this one to get the DVD with their videos... Money well-spent

5 out of 5 stars Best trip hop jazz fuision folk groups around!!.......2004-06-16

I discovered lamb about four years ago, what a suprise a strange fuision of jazz, folk, eletronic and triphop.Great vocals with tons of emotion If you like Billie Holiday, erikha badu, portishead, triky and etc,you will find lamb to be a journey of soul that in it's self is orginal. One of the best groups this decade,Very Under Rated!!!

1 out of 5 stars Save your dough, buy something, anything else..........2004-06-15

This group has been overrated by many, and I've been conned. The only great song is Gabriel and the video Sweet is cute, and the rest ranges from mediocre to hit-the-skip-button. This is after 8 listens trying to like them. Do try Mandalay's Solace instead.

Three years elapsed between the U.K. release of Lamb's highly acclaimed debut and this CD, making fans of their moody trip-hop impatient. Does Fear of Fours deliver? Yes, but like many sophomore efforts, this one can't help but fall short of expectations. There is more of Lamb's full, emotional sound here, but while songs off the debut such as "Gorecki" and "Cottonwool" were beyond epic, most of the tracks on Fear of Fours merely get the job done. Where Louise Rhodes's vocals were near operatic, they are now more spoken wordish. And rather than complementing the lush orchestral instrumentation of partner Andy Barlow, the two more often collide. But there is beauty in chaos and nobody knows that better than Lamb. When Fear of Fours shines, it really shines. Take the drum & bass-influenced beat frenzy on "Ear Parcel" and the uplifting aria, "Fly." These alone are a testament to why so many fell for this Manchester duo in the first place. --Courtney Reimer

2 out of 5 stars Enough With the Voice Processing.......2005-09-27

This had the potential to be a great album. It's spoiled, however, by what I'm certain is the bizarre electronic processing of Rhodes' voice. If you listen on a good stereo, it's obvious that the harmonic envelope of her vocals has been truncated and shifted upwards in the frequency spectrum, leaving her sounding like a petulant chipmunk. Vocal processing can make an average voice sound wonderful, but it's hard to imagine why anyone would want to use it to make a wonderful voice sound terrible--and as their first album demonstrates, Rhodes has a wonderful voice. And it's something that gets worse with repeated listenings rather than better. I'm afraid to buy their last two albums out of fear that I'll have to listen to that ghastly electro-voice again. I listen to this album in spite of the cringe-inducing vocals--there's still some excellent songwriting, arranging and playing on it. But Lamb deserves a big thumbs down for one of the worst production decisions I've ever heard. Best heard on your computer or in your car where it just sounds as if her voice has become somwhat more shrill--the better your audio system, the more it's likely to drive you nuts. And I still can't understand why people call this trip-hop. Drum & Bass plus a white female vocalist does not a trip-hop album make.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2004-04-12

All Lamb's albums are awesome, but this one sums them up best. This was the first time I'd heard Lamb (besides the K&D remix of Trans-Fatty Acid), and it was totally unlike anything else I had experienced. It was so intense and different. Every listen opened up new tracks that I hadn't noticed before, and Fear Of Fours has the most cohesive album structure that I have ever come across. Lamb wakes you up with Soft Mistake and Little Things, takes you on a wild journey with Ear Parcel and Five, and finally says good night with Lullaby, with killer tracks like B-line, All In Your Hands, Softly and Fly thrown in along the way. Fear of Fours is an absolute masterpiece, and is definately the place to start your love affair with Lamb. Happy listening

4 out of 5 stars Great record, probably their best yet.......2004-01-19

Andy Barlow and Louise Rhodes continue exploring interesting soundscapes after their intriguing self-titled debut. While not as risky and adventurous as that album, "Fear of Fours" still brings something new and provides a rich listening experience. In fact, it`s probably the duo`s best record to date, offering a strong and creative mix of trip-hop, drum n`bass, downtempo and electronica. Louise`s voice sounds a little weird at first, but after a couple of songs it doesn`t matter much since these compositions are always absorving and engaging, setting an unique and futuristic mood. There's a lot of good stuff to find here, like the heartfelt-but-not-corny ballad "Softly", the strange and addictive "Fly", the smooth instrumental "Five" or the epic "Bonfire". It expertly mixes light and darkness, the emotional and the mechanical, providing a fresh and original record that deserves more recognition. This gives "pop" a good name.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-10-21

I first heard about this group on a local radio station, the group's name was not mentioned since I was listening to the station's "Extended Trip" show: they play 3 hours of chill-out or Acid Jazz music with no commercials. When I heard the Filla Brazilla mix of Cottonwool, I was hooked from that point (on Lamb and Filla Brazilla) after a week of research led me to the groups name.

I like this CD alot more than their previous one (where Cottonwool comes from). This is a mixed bag of different styled tunes to suit a wide variety of tastes. My favorite is the one that does not feature the lead singer's vocals, the one that starts off slow, featuring the trumpet. One of the greatest tunes ever.

By the way, I like her voice, she could be ALOT worse = Britney (the devil) Spears anyone?

5 out of 5 stars Great Group.......2003-10-07

I recently started hunting down any and all "Trip-Hop" inspired music and I am not quite sure how I came across Lamb, (probably thanks to Amazons suggestions) but I love this album as well as their newest "What Sound". Please if you enjoy smooth vocals and trippy hypnotic tunes then check this out!!!

BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Like another fan said, this music delivers. And, boy, does it deliver. Noise. Lots and lots of angry noise. This recording works.

5 out of 5 stars It could go for more than $25.......1999-02-09

I would pay more than the $25 for this CD if needed. Brilliant Techno/Punk. If you want some stuff just to jump up and down to or scream along with this is the album, check out their other stuff like Burn Berlin Burn too. Alec Empire, the bands frontman has a couple great solo albums too.

5 out of 5 stars devestatingly fast: riot sounds produce riots.......1998-11-12

This is a wonderful mixture of breakbeats, noise, distortion, and aggressive shouting. Not only is the music great but their political message is great and very abrasive. This CD is a vital part of my collection and ranks right up or surpases such great records as "It Takes a Nation of Millions to hold us back" by Public Enemy, "Staight outta Compton" by N.W.A. This music blows groups like "The Prodigy" right out of the water. This is FUTURE MUSIC!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A serious kick in the head for those who need one........1998-09-18

A great album. It's hard and fast. It crunches your brain and spits it out. A blend of so many beats and bass lines that there's something for everyone. Steal this album if you must.

3 out of 5 stars A "What's Chill?" Sampler.......2006-12-30

There are several tricks to making any kind of compilation album, especially when that compilation is intended to center around a particular mood or genre. This double-disc set contains roughly two and a half hours of music, not much of it "chill" per se.

Even given a record set that doesn't hit the theme on the nose, I would score extra points for consistency. Although most of these songs are, in their own right, certainly worth a listen, the overall effect is uneven and miscalculated. It's as if four different people with five different concepts of "cool" worked on gathering these twenty-six songs together.

There are a few songs that, by now, have become classic chill mainstays (Lamb's "Transfatty Acid," Groove Armada's "Inside My Mind," and, of course, "Lebanese Blonde," by Thievery Corporation), and there are a few lesser known standouts (Kinobe's "Skyscraper" and "Blue Room" by The Orb), but there are also more than a few sore thumbs sticking out of this group. "Dusted," the collaborative effort by Leftfield and Roots Manuva is a great trip-hop recording, but it has no place on a "chill" album. Likewise with "Dirge," an electro-dreamy, heavy hitter by Death In Vegas.

Even inconsistency could be forgiven if the songs were arranged in such a way as to SUGGEST consistency, as opposed to highlighting the discrepancies between the tunes. Unfortunately, this set fails on that count as well. It's worth a buy if you're interested in expanding your record collection, since there are quite a few good songs here. But if you do buy this album, instead of listening to the CDs straight through (as one would normally do with "chill-out" records), I'd recommend sampling from the track list to make your own chill mix. You'll probably be much more successful than the creators of these discs.

4 out of 5 stars Dig this vibe.......2001-03-06

I heard this at a friend's dinner party last weekend and was impressed. As a DJ I probably wouldn't buy it, as I already have most of these tracks already, but it's a good buy for those trying to improve their collections of downtempo, trip-hop, and future jazz. Although I don't think it's strictly a "chill out" compilation, with its inclusion of a few heavy, more danceable tracks, most of the material here sets a nice, mellow vibe for just hanging at the crib, enjoying some wine and having a good, laidback time with a few friends.

3 out of 5 stars Jungle Beats.......2001-02-18

Three minute congo drum instrumentals do not put me in a "Blissed Out Mood", but they may for someone else. This is more for a Portishead fan who likes heavy beats and drums over anything else. If you lean toward rap, drum & bass, enjoy Nightmares On Wax's newer sound over the old, and need to relax, check this out. It's a good compillation (not mixed), with artists who I usually like (Alex Gopher, Thievery Corp, Tim Love Lee, Truby Trio, etc.) but it's like taking all my least favorites and making a double CD out of them. At the same time, if you're into melancholy vocals, and African beat meets trip hop, this is the place.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty "Darkness".......2005-01-11

Smooth melodies and sophisticated trip-hop are the mark of Lamb. Their fourth release "Between Darkness and Wonder" is well-named: it's a combination of the melancholy and the pretty, wrapped up in catchy and/or tranquil pop. It's music to get wistful to.

A haunting opener bursts into shimmery "Darkness" and the poppy "Stronger." Then the album takes a different twist, turning down into melodious trip-hop ("Sugar 5," the bouncy "Sun"), and a stretch of soft, sweet music (the instrumental "Angelica," rainy ballad "Till the Clouds Clear," the sweet violin-led "Learn"). After the thumpy, gritty "Open Up," the album closes with the soft, slow, violin-tinged ballad "Hearts and Flowers."

Despite the more upbeat numbers, the tone of "Between Darkness and Wonder" is mellow and pensive. It's also a bit sad, but in an optimistic way. "And I'm beyond recognition/Gone to some small space in silent stillness/Yet something beats anew," Lou Robinson tells us in her sweet, sometimes velvety vocals. With all those songs about rebirth, skies turning from grey to blue and demons (personal demons?), it straddles between being melancholy and joyful.

Despite the electronica/trip-hop nature of Lamb, the edges of "Between Darkness and Wonder" are classical. "Hearts and Flowers" and "Learn" have violins, "Wonder" has rippling harp, and "Angelica" has piano. It gives a more timeless quality to the smooth, panoramic electronic music. Speaking of which: Andy Barlow does a fantastic job molding the beats, blips and sweeps of sound into some of the best trip-hop out there.

"Between Darkness and Wonder" is a beautiful album by a talented band. Deeply atmospheric and melodic, Lamb's newest release could be easily considered one of the best releases of 2004.

4 out of 5 stars My introduction to lamb.......2004-02-24

I'll admit that this is the first lamb album I've listened to. But I truly love it. Lamb very skillfully molds smooth rhythms and melodies into phenomenal songs. Although this album lacks the level of sophistication that most Massive Attack and Portishead albums have, it's a soothing and extremely pleasant journey. If you're into Chill Out music, this is a definite buy.

2 out of 5 stars more cloying sounds from a newly spit-polished Lamb.......2004-01-15

Let's just say that I miss the upright bass and jazzy sounds of the first two albums. Although "Darkness" is less cloying than the almost vomit-inducing (in my opinion) "What Sound," it is only a baby step away...
The first and third tracks caught my ear, but by "Angelica", (which is merely one phrase of a Debussy piano piece set to a beat and repeated over... and over....), my attention was drifting. I have no idea what happened, but this is not the same Lamb that produced one of my favorite songs of all time, the soaring, epic, "Gorecki," but a once-interesting and innovative group pushing for popular, Dido-sized and -shaped success. My advice: bring back the wooden bass, Lamb! I'm begging you! And for all you peops interested in this band, pick up Lamb's first 2 albums. They are guaranteed to please!

4 out of 5 stars too much lamb, not enough wolf.......2003-12-31

Maybe it should be only three stars, not four. Undoubtedly, there are some gorgeous tunes on this album. "Angelica" and "Wonder" are superlative, for instance. However, whether this is progress for the duo, as has been suggested, is a trickier proposition. With their first two albums, conjuring a mood out of a variety of dark types of music, among them drum-and-bass, trip hop, and acid jazz, Lamb created a perfectly original sound: trademark vocals over very sparse core composed primarily of powerful and inventive beats, a prominent upright bass, and strident wind instruments. The band occupied its own musical space. Beginning with "What Sound," they gave up that space and stepped into a far more densely populated arena, where Moby, Everything But the Girl, and so many others compete to lay down ravishing pop hooks imbued with electronic magic. You might call this a process of beautification, which began with "What Sound": Lamb now floats tender melodies over lavish keyboards and acoustic guitars, and, as if to emphasize the rosy atmosphere, throws in some surprisingly optimistic - and trite - lyrics about us all being one and not having to worry about dying, and so forth. Inevitably, there are drawbacks to this new stance: once you abandon a certain harsh musical independence and begin to sound as if you were vying, with a kerjillion others, for a chart hit, you necessarily expose yourself to comparison. About half of this album compares favorably with everyone else in the field, the other half does not. I've always loved Lamb's instrumentals, and "Angelica" is possibly the most memorable tune on the CD. But the loveliness begins to peter out with "Sun" and gradually becomes too bland to register. Some of the last songs on the CD, to folky foursquare rhythm, sound like something you might hear done much better by Beth Orton. I've been listening to "Between Darkness..." repeatedly, with utter enjoyment, but cannot remember most of it. To say that I've not been deeply affected by it, as I was by "Lamb" and "Fear of Fours," would be an understatement. Too much lambness, not enough teeth.

5 out of 5 stars Hammering that nail in: Lamb rise even higher..........2003-12-21

When Massive Attack failed to keep up with their own quality standards (and yes I know that's sometimes hard to define) a point was proven once again: it's incredibly hard after 3 albums to keep fulfillinf the expectations of your own fans especially if you've accustomed them to top-notch stuff.

    Not so for Lamb.
Lamb, prove with "Between Darkness..." that this is a group totally underrated and with potential that goes way beyond our imaginations so far, indeed, Lamb are a group that after 3 brilliant albums make a comeback that not only is a step into a different direction but simoultaneously a step forward.

While the signs were already there for those that were watching (or listening) with their previous (and also stunning) album "What sound", this, their new LP is one that comes through not as an electronica release (even though it is) but as a very organic-sounding one.

It seems that Lamb are able to convey more feeling with each new release as such is here the case. It also seems that their singer seems to be maturing in a spectacular way. Her voice stays with you long after the CD is over and it makes you come back constantly for more.

Some critics said that this close to a "progressive electronica" album but I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean. Perhaps they are trying to point out the absence of pompous deep beats or power basses. If you've heard Lamb's "Scratch bass" in their previous album you probably know what I mean, but, having siad that, i note once again that Lamb attempt here a "different" direction and the result is nothing less than spectacular.

Dark, deeply heartfelt, tremendously atmospheric and more melodic than we've heard them before, "Between Darkness & Wonder" is an album that yes might go unnoticed in the storm of garbage the music industry is raining us with, but for those that will discover it will be another Lamb gem to cherish.
