Zmrzlina means "ice cream" in Czech. But, if it is ice cream you want, you may be hard-pressed to find it on this CD. However, the music of Zmrzlina is really what describes them. Putting their image in words is a totally diverse concept that is eager to come out. Katastrophe, Vol. 3 is the band's 3rd edition of assorted goodies that only the weird and dangerously smart would be able to comprehend. The first track, "Supermarket Radio," starts off with making you feel as if you entered into the Twilight Zone of midnight discount grocery shopping and then turns into a disco nightmare filled with effects that seem to be a derivative from a 1950s Sci-Fi B-movie. "Schoolgirls" is a catchy tune that suggests the true innocence of Zmrzlina sound, yet at the same time the band clearly turns the child-like, sounding song into a chaotic adventure. Overall, this band can be compared to bands like Pink Floyd (during the "Obscured By Small Clouds" era), The Velvet Underground, Hallowed Ground-era Violent Femmes, or The Fall. At any rate, I enjoyed this CD and I'm sure that whoever wants to listen to something different (for a change), they should definitely give this band a try. And yes, if it seems as though I am biased, it is not because my brother is in this band.
