BBC Radio One host Andy Kershaw was so enthralled by the gripping music of Ted Hawkins that he detoured from a Nashville trip to find Hawkins in Los Angeles. In fact, Kershaw recorded the first two cuts here in 1986 in Hawkins's Inglewood home and the next four were taped at LA's Sunset Marquis hotel two months later. The remainder of these 19 songs are culled from three Kershaw radio shows dating from October 1986 to August 1989. These are all solo-acoustic numbers, and this setting is the best way to appreciate Hawkins's matchless blend of soul, folk, country, and blues. On the whole, this doesn't quite match the intensity of the 1994 recordings collected on The Final Tour, but it offers a few of its own unique charms. Hawkins brings to life the cheatin' song "Daytime Friends," a 1977 No. 1 country hit for Kenny Rogers and revisits Doris Troy's 1963 soul classic "Just One Look." In addition, the final five songs are lesser-known Hawkins originals, including the childlike "Dollar Tree" and a couple of simple but passionately delivered love songs. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars A unique voice.......2002-04-23

This album is amazing; simply Ted Hawkins with his very rudimentary solo quitar accompaniment. I gather most cuts were recorded at a residence or in radio studios. Nonetheless, the sound quauty is good and the performances come across as heartfelt and "authentic." This music cannot be easily categorized... blues, pop, soul... who cares. The feeling is there. The enunciation of the lyrics is another real strength. Every word comes through and many will break your heart. I do not know which songs Hawkins wrote. Many of them are familiar to me, but even if they are you feel you've heard them for them first time. I bought some other Ted Hawkins albums, some with musician backup and studio recording, but this one comes closest to what is unique about this performer. A cross between Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Sam Cooke, a capella, if you can imagine that.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful & Stunning.......2002-03-05

Where do I begin with the praise for this amazing singer? Should i tell you that it brings tears to my eyes? That I get choked up at the sheer beauty, soulfulness, and unparallelled musicality of Ted Hawkins?

If you love soulful singers, you need this album in your life. The comparisons with Sam Cooke are no b.s. Ted Hawkins was touched by God. There are only a small handful of singers in this category. Some of them: Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Nina Simone, Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline.

I wish to God I had seen this man sing in person.....he will heal your soul with the honey balm of his voice.

4 out of 5 stars A must for fans.......2002-05-29

The bottom line: If you enjoy Robyn Hitchcock, you're going to want this CD. You should buy it; you will not regret it. The material here, with two exceptions, is not new--it's reinterpreted. These sessions are sparser, leaner, even less polished. It works. Most of these versions are just different enough to be compelling. ("52 Stations" is a good example.) The new tunes are "Open the Door, Homer," a cover of a Bob Dylan song (very good), and "Banana Boat Song," ("Dayo"), which is just silly. The sound quality and production are good. My only complaint is the song selection. It's a shame Robyn chose to cover the mediocre "Lady Waters and the Hooded One" instead of, say, "Strawberry Mind." In fact, it seems to me that "Fegmania!" is slighted in this collection, which is unfortunate.

If you're curious about Robyn Hitchcock, skip this and pick up "Greatest Hits" (a bit of a misnomer as there are no hits on it!) If you are already a fan, especially a hard-core fan, don't hesitate. Order this today. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for fans, okay for beginners.......2001-12-14

Not a place to start, but fans will want the acoustic band versions, which comprises a little less than half the album. Some of the others sound very much like the album versions. The 2 "new" songs are fun but nothing to die for.

4 out of 5 stars Re-recordings with a reason for being.......2000-06-07

If you already know Hitchcock's work, you may be looking over _The Kershaw Sessions_ track listing and asking yourself whether to buy an album to get two new songs. Be reassured - the songs may be familiar, but the performances won't be.

Many fans felt that Hitchcock's recordings for A&M records were overproduced, so when he promised that _Respect_ would be the band playing around the kitchen table, hopes were high. Alas! _Respect_ was the worst of the lot, buried in studio glop.

_The Kershaw Sessions_ is closer to _Respect_'s intent. About half the songs here are from Hitchcock's A&M period, and nearly every one is an improvement on the official release. Except for the bookend tracks (inexplicably borrowed from Hitchcock's live _Gotta Let This Hen Out!_) the songs are fresh and clear, spontaneous without being sloppy - even "Superman" has all its tricky rhythms in place. It's especially satisfying to hear "Madonna of the Wasps" with the hypnotic intro restored.

Most imports are for completists only, but _The Kershaw Sessions_ still sounds good years after it came out.
