Product Description
"Slack Key West" is a collection of unique and relaxing ki ho 'alu or "slack key" guitar instrumentals, almost all originals ,which is unusual for this style as most artists rely on existing reptoire. Gentle ryhthms and exotic new tunings make Kimo's music very special. And it's a virtual tour of some of Hawaii's most beautiful places without the expense of an airline ticket!
Customer Reviews:
Heavenly!.......2007-05-14
This cd is a real treasure. I have played it for my friends, my mother and even my teenagers and they all love it. "My Hawaiian Heart" may well be the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
Terrific album!.......2007-05-13
I first became aware of Jim Kimo West from his work as guitarist for "Weird Al" Yankovic. I bought this album back in December, and it was very good. I didn't really have much interest in Hawaiian-style music beforehand, but I enjoyed this album very much. Terrific album.
A Masterpiece.......2007-05-13
This is Jim's best work so far!
I love this CD. His music is so peaceful and relaxing. It's great for working on homework, or unwinding after a long day.
My favorite song on this CD is the second one, "Popoki Lolo". The composition is amazing- it really portrays the cat he met, and what their interaction was like.
Da real kine stuff!.......2007-01-11
Very easy listening...the authentic Hawaiian slack-key style fused with Kimo's modern virtuosity on the fretboard takes the listener to the beach with the gentle breezes and crashing waves in the background.
One of the best slack key players on the planet!.......2006-05-30
I live in Hawaii, play slack key guitar myself and am very familiar with the music of all the well known players in the islands. I had the good fortune of meeting Kimo West in person during a photo shoot on Kauai and he sent me a copy of "Slack Key West".
From the first track and with every single track on the cd - I was blown away with delight and surprise - Kimo West is one of the best of the best and deserves to be widely known and recognized in the world of slack key guitar. His guitar playing has fluidity, style, humor and tenderness that is uniquely his own. Each piece on this album (many of them are original compositions) is a gem. Buy this album - spread the word - this player is the real deal.

Album Description
"Coconut Hat", by Jim West, is a collection of new, original "slack-key" guitar instrumentals, that takes the listener on a musical voyage to Maui's Hana Coast, a part of Hawaii that is rich in cultural heritage and seemingly endless physical beauty. It is a must-have for any guitar music afficionado and especially for fans of slack-key guitar.
In Hawaiian, this music would be described as "nahenahe", meaning sweet and relaxing in sound or character. "Coconut Hat" is unusual in the fact that its appeal is not limited to an island audience only, as is much of this genre's offerings. This music will speak to any listener, with the same gentle voice.
"Slack-key" guitar is a traditional Hawaiian style of guitar fingerpicking in which the player "slacks" or loosens the strings to form different, and often personal, tunings. These tunings allow the player to carry melodies on the upper strings while keeping a steady bass pattern on the lower strings.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely, soothing music.......2007-05-14
This cd has quickly become one of my favorites. Without fail, everyone who hears it (or Slack Key West) in my car asks where they can pick up a copy. Jim's music will touch your soul.
Beautiful and Relaxing.......2007-05-13
I absolutely love this CD. Actually, I love all of Jim's CDs.
His music takes you right to the beaches of Hawaii. I listen to this CD after a rough day, or while I'm doing homework for college.
beautiful.......2005-09-22
I came by this music by accident when working late one night, I bought it simply because the name appealed to me. I played the cd whilst working on some new designs and found it to be very beautiful and thought provoking. Absolutely wonderful..I've played it many many times since, I shall be looking out for any more albums by Jim West.
Outstanding music for tranquil relaxation.......2003-09-20
I have been fan of Al and the band since the beginning in the early 80s, and have known for many years that the band was extremely talented. I am sorry it took me several years to stumble upon Jim West's amazing collection of Hawaiian acoustic guitar instrumentals. This CD instantly transports the listener to a tropical island paradise, with barely a hint of hula girls or tourist stuff. I already knew that Jim could make a guitar sound like any musical group or genre, but this is something else again. Just heavenly. I think the music could inspire some Hawaiian travel on my part -- if the islands are as serene as Jim's music, I need to go there soon. Even if Weird Al is not your cup of tea, don't miss this treat!
Mesmerizing.......2002-04-12
I use Celtic and other types of folk music for meditation and also when I am walking a labyrinth. This is one of my very favorite CD for that use. I find it very mesmerizing. It is one of the most played cds in my collection of over 160. I and it very relaxing and never tire of listening to it.
I am anxiously waiting for Jim to release at new cd. I vacation in Hawaii every and plan to go to Maui this year and I will make an attempt to locate him. I hope he performs in the Hana area.

Simon Rattle leads the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic beyond their popular South American Getaway project with this trip north of the border, where they mine the sounds of American jazz, popular song, spirituals, and film themes. The results are varied, and the tracks that work best may surprise you. Chick Corea's "Spain" begins as a moving lament, but unfolds to become sweeping, grand, and celebratory. The Pink Panther theme is a lightweight but fun romp through the familiar tune (the cellists even do a little whistling while they work). Meanwhile, the oddest cut has to be Sergio Cardenas's "The Flower Is a Key (A Rap for Mozart)," on which Sir Simon Rattle himself performs both spoken word and conducting duties (he's far better at conducting). All in all, this is a pleasant, relaxing album of timeless pop favorites. --Jason Verlinde

Bill Jabanoski/THE KEY WEST PARTY CD/Running Time: 73:05 minutes.
Customer Reviews:
WARNING! THIS CD IS HABIT FORMING!.......2007-02-04
After you've listened to all the fun tunes on this CD and laughed so much that you think you're going to pass out when you're listening to "Man Who Got Thrown Out Of The Green Parrot" "Lobsters From Outer Space Took My Beer Away" and "I Wanna Get Drunk, I Wanna ...etc" over and over again, you'll probably be like me and out buying Jabanoski's other Key West CDs like the wonderful Key West live concert "Beach Bum Bootleg" and "Conch Dreams" and the best of them all "Key West, Florida. Island Of Dreams." This is "party music" at its best and this CD is just a great sampler of how good Jabanoski is at it.
I think the very few people who've written bad reviews of this CD here are just sour grapes or just expect Jabanoski to be a Jimmy B. clone and are disappointed because he isn't. This is Key West fun music at its best, but unlike other people, Jabanoski doesn't try to copy Jimmy but has a uniquely wonderful side of his own.
WOW!!!.......2007-01-30
I've never herd of Bill Jabanoski and now I know why. He may be a great guy and a true key-west local, but he is not a singer. This cd is by far the worst I've ever purchased. There is some guy talking about something (not really sure what) and every now and then he strums a gituar. No beat, no melody, no nothing. There are a few songs he attempts to sing on but he sounds like a constapated sam kennison sitting on the "throne". Any one giving this 5 stars must be doing so out of sarcasim, (or they are related to him.)
I like Jimmy Buffet songs and was looking for something along those lines only differant. I purchased this and Brent Burns (Tropical Nuts) at the same time. Thank goodness for Brent Burns, its a good cd and worth the money, this is is not.
A Great Trip To Key West For Only $13.99.......2006-12-15
So much has been written about this CD due to its huge commercial success, but I just wanted to add my own voice to all the million plus out there who bought it and love it. Jabanoski is simply a genius, whether he's writing about the horrors of war in "A Special Place In Hell. Four Years Under The Bootheal Of George W. Bush" or warning us against war and the political motivations of the Bush White House the way he did in 2002 on "Florence Martus," or just having a wild Key West drunken spree like this CD is. Whichever. If you listen to all of his music you'll realize that, as impossible as it seems, he's both the Bob Dyland and Jimmy Buffett of his generation.
Totally Fun Album.......2006-12-15
If you want some holiday season laughs while you're putting up with your relatives, get this Cd. Unbelievably funny and fun Key West Party music. Too many great songs to pick out one or two to talk about but I agree with everyone else that 'Man Who Got Thrown Out of the Green Parrot' and 'Lobsters from Outer Space' are probably the funniest songs ever recorded. They'll actually leave you bent over and rolling on the floor. As a Parrothead I also got to thank whoever posted the 'customer image' picture of Jimmy and Roadkill Bill on stage together. Sorry I can't help you out. I don't know what 'Tiki Bar Tour' show it was taken at either. But its still a great shot. [...]
Not even worth listening to.......2006-12-09
This is one of the worse recordings I have ever heard. To even think of comparing this CD to JB is ridiculous.

Album Description
Billy' Mitchell's songs are inspired by the whimsy of Jimmy Buffett, the wit of Shel Silverstein, the eccentricity of John Prine with a dash of Spike Jones thrown in for good measure. "Billy's music is like a trip to Key West via "The Twilight Zone"; great fun, full of musical surprises." says Ed Dillon, former touring member of The Clancy Brothers (Irish Folk legends).
The songs were written during a stay on the Gulf of Mexico's Florida coast and not only captured the carefree spirit of the region, but reflect Billy's "the glass is half-full" philosophy. The 12 song ebut CD of original songs spans genres from Beach tunes, to Bluegrass, to Folk, R & B and Country. The songs are classic lyric based, story songs written from an angst-free, post adolescent point of view. Not to be taken seriously, the CD is full of serious fun. "What's so Bad About Feelin' Good?" was produced at Ark Studios in Fairhaven, MA and features 14 guest musicians.

Album Description
With a repertoire of jazz and blues instrumentals and Hawaiian hulas, Sam Ku was one of the early masters of the acoustic steel guitar. He is placed by Bob Brozman among the elite of National Tricone players and was remembered by Tau Moe as one of the two best players of the 1920s (Sol Hoopii being the other).
Customer Reviews:
I hope Grass Skirt Records follows with something just as good........2006-07-26
Grass Skirt Records' inaugural cd is a rousing success! Collecting all but one of Sam's sides that I know of (the other is on Hawaiian Steel Guitar Classics on the Arhoolie label), this disc is a dream come true for fans of acoustic Hawaiian steel guitar from the 1920s and '30s. Aside from the several tracks that have shown up on previous compilation cds, I'd never heard any of this stuff.
This disc has hardly left my player since I received it a week-and-a-half ago. I've heard it 2 times per day, minimum, since it arrived. Sam's reputation (for youngins of my generation) as one of the best National Tricone players is cemented with the release of this disc. Sweet Georgia Brown is one of those tracks that make people think guys like Sam or Bob Brozman must use some sort of pick-ups/effects, given the sounds they coax out of these great instruments, and the way they seem to be able to control the speed at which slow rolls of sound leave the guitar. Nope, no pick-ups folks, just magic fingers.
I guess, like me before I owned this, you may be wondering how does Sam compare/contrast to the Sol Hoopii Volumes 1 and 2 you own. So far I must say I think Sol was the better of the 2 overall. I think Sol had a more dynamic sense of touch. The way he entered, shaped and exited notes seems without peer. Someday Sweetheart here shows that. Also I think you'll notice Sam has the occasional moment of rhythmic clunkiness, particularly on the lowest notes/phrases he'd play, as on part of Memphis Blues. Sol didn't seem to ever have that, at least not on cd-released sides I've heard. To jump cds, you really should hear my favorite version of Memphis Blues. It's by the Mobile Strugglers on the great Violin, Sing the Blues For me disc.
What I think Sam may have had over Sol is his ability to make the National seem to be a magical box of beautiful sounds. Sam can certainly make this instrument sing and shimmer! He's capable of great, slow, meditative beauty. I give this four stars only because I gave Sol Hoopii Volume 1 five stars, and I still think most anyone would consider Sol to be the all-around better guitarist.
Then again, if you're in the mood for less (as in zero) kitsch than you'll get on Sol Hoopii Volume 2, or from King Bennie Nawahi, Sam right here is your man. Lots of beautiful stuff here. If you prefer Kalama's Quartet's regal quality over Sol Hoopii volume 2, King Bennie or the Cheapsuit Serenaders, this Sam Ku West disc is the one for you.
A sizeable chunk of liner-notes which certainly told me more than I ever knew of Sam's life, as well as some fine pictures and a discography that only omits some repeated issues, makes this a 5-star, class-act tribute to a great musician. Thank You to the collectors and Grass Skirt for making this fantastic collection possible!
Classic Hawaiian steel guitar from the 1920s.......2006-05-08
An awesome collection of rare recordings from Hawaiian steel guitarist Sam Ku West, with informative liner notes and great sound quality on the digital transfers. If you enjoy Sol Hoopii, Tau Moe, Gabby Pahinui and other wizards of the style, then this disc is for you... Get it while you can!

Customer Reviews:
Down To The Keys.......2001-01-31
This latest release by journeyman troubadour Rick Steffen is not a concert CD. This is the type of album that takes you back to Key West, sitting under the fans at Sloppy Joe's on a warm afternoon, sipping a cold one while the guy onstage plys his trade.
Steffen shows his versatility throughout "Another Island," by including Soca, Ska, Pop, Reggae, Calypso, Jazz & even a Ballad on this effort. With a strong adaptive voice, he moves effortlessly from one genre to another without a glitch in sight.
Rick Steffen sings about the things we love: Key West, the Caribbean, palm trees, coconuts and even hurricanes.....and he does it very well with solid vocals and tight backup.
Though the album is solid from top to bottom, my particular favorites are: "Sloppy Joe's," "Out On The Ocean," "Palm Tree On De Island" and the melodic ballad, "Hurricane."
As Rick says, "I plan to continue my work here making visitors and locals forget about their corporate or private quests and, with my songs, promote the pursuit of happiness and a more casual lifestyle - after all life is too short for anything else."
Steffen's philosophy, espoused above, is why this CD has earned a spot in my CD carousel and I'll bet it deserves a spot in yours. Check it out today.....
It'll take ya back to the Keys!!!
Steffen's Best Ever.......2000-11-29
I am a long time fan of Rick's. He just keeps getting better. This has got to be the best album he has ever done. As usual his mellow style is just the thing to unwind by.
Take a trip to the island anytime you want ( or need ) it !.......2000-10-20
Rick Steffen is the kind of singer/songwriter that could be considered a perfect "tropical" musician - his songs are all straight from his southern heart and all carry his unique way of looking at the highs and lows of life here in the tropics...
While people will always compare Rick to Jimmy Buffett, I think the comparison can only be made to the early days of Buffett - way back when Jimmy actually lived some of the adventures and tropical lifestyle he made so many of us yearn for in the old days.
Rick Steffen spends far more time "down island" these days than Buffett, and the magic of that special island really shines through in all the songs Rick sings on this latest album that will have you toe tappin' and singing along with a great big grin as you listen again and again !
Rick looks at life through tropical eyes and his songwriting is clever, witty, and emotional with outstanding lyrics that range from deep observations to fun and carefree island tunes.
His talents as a musician shine as he performs a wide range of musical styles including folk, calypso, reggae, jazz, soca, ska, and pop. It all works together to make a wonderful album that is sure to be enjoyed by lovers of the tropics - even if they are stuck in the "great white north" during a deep freeze.
If you can't afford the actual trip south, Rick Steffen provides a great escape with this most enjoyable CD that will have your feet in the sand within moments of putting it in your CD player, even if only in your mind...
Rick Steffen does the islands of Florida.......2000-10-20
It could be any number of other islands, but the first cut, "Sloppy Joes", puts us right at the heart of Key West. The obvious reference to Jimmy Buffet cannot be denied; Rick picks up this island's flavor where Jimmy left off. A nice blend of pop, calypso, reggae, ska and soca, "Another Island" offers a fresh taste of what it's like to be south of the USA mainland. The CD is made complete with the inclusion of marimba and steel drums to compliment Rick's velvety smooth and relaxing voice. If it's not a hit, it should be!!!

I believe Rick has captured the sounds of the Islands and life's wonders. I am happy to be able to add this to my music collection and look forward to sharing it with others. Keep up the good work Rick!
