Do Bother At All.......2006-02-08
Koufax is a great band, and to get a free downloaded song of this caliber is a steal. It is much more upbeat then what I have heard of them in earlier albums, but it is a great song. Give it a listen.
Brilliant.......2006-01-16
As of yet I have only heard "Why bother at all" and my initial reaction was "wow, I didn't expect that." It's a very driven and passionate song. The use of the piano is a bonus (there are some bands that use piano or keyboards, but rarely utilize them in a "good" way, one band that is an exception to this is "the Arcade Fire" which if you like the "Why bother at all" track, then you'll appreciate The Arcade Fire.
Anyhow, if the track I've listened to is a testament to the rest of an album, I suggest you snap this jem up soon.
Good album by a great band.......2006-01-05
To the reviewer Kevin Hess:
First of all, the Strokes' lead singer is Julian Casablancas, and Rob Suchan doesn't really sound like him. Suchan is more of an emotive, bombastic singer, while Casablancas is a more monotone, deadpan singer. They're both male and both musicians, but that's where the similarities end. Plus, the Strokes aren't exactly known for their piano work.
I also don't think they should be compared to a band like Keane. While Keane has been together slightly longer, Koufax has put out about four times as many full-length albums as Keane. While I don't particularly like their latest release as much as their previous albums, Koufax comes out swinging on every album -- on every track for that matter. They're experimental, innovative and retro without being a rip-off. While their New Wave influences are obvious and credited, they're doing really original stuff, (unlike bands like the Killers and the like, who are cashing in on writing formulaic singles that sound like music that ended up Depeche Mode's cutting room floor -- not that you compared them to the Killers; I'm just sayin's all ...) while retaining their trademark style. Furthermore, Koufax's lyrics are smart and engaging, involving social commentary and witty plays on words -- not just crappy drivel about failed relationships.
Finally, it's slightly silly to compare a world-renown baseball player to a slighty obscure indie rock band. That's a little beyond apples and oranges -- sorta like comparing Spaghetti-Os and Oreos (though both of those kinda suck).
Anyway, regardless of whether you like Koufax (but if you don't you're a moron), they work their asses off and and they're rockin' the block for a good cause: music that doesn't suck.
How is this their debut?!?.......2005-09-07
Sooooo, the original reviewer is quite uninformed on this fine band. They have several previous releases, to include the brilliant "Social Life." While this new album doesn't hold up to that standard, it's still a very solid release.
While Koufax is driven by keyboards and a stellar rhythm section, don't confuse them with the watered-down New Order mimicry that is currently crowding the airwaves. These guys sound nothing like the Killers, or the Bravery, or any of those other hacks. They bring more rock than cheesy synth-pop.
The two dings against this album are quite simple:
1. It's no "Social Life"
2. The lyrics could have used a couple (okay, a handful) of rewrites
Average customer rating:
- Koufax's most accessible and best album - band/genre fans will probably like it a lot - 4.5 stars

Album Description
Social Life, the quartet's second full-length for Vargrant/Heroes & Villains, is characteristic Koufax, infectious as the clap, free of pretense and pomposity and exuding wit and wisdom well beyond their twenty-something years. Digipak. TVT Records. 2002.

Koufax's most accessible and best album - band/genre fans will probably like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-08
Koufax's previous albums weren't really that good, so it's good that "Social Life" fared a lot better. What's great about this album is that they finally create some genuinely fun and catchy tunes which aren't really cheesy or guilty pleasures. They STRAY on those two lines, but they somehow manage to stay in most-genre-fans-will-like-this territory. The singer is pretty good, but he's not great - most people will like him. Another good thing here is that every song is good-if-not great pop rock (with a little more "pop" than rock). The lyrics are sometimes interesting, but they're mostly there to help make the songs catchier. Musically the album is relatively unique, though it's mostly just indie pop rock with a piano every now and then. It's very well done and clean, however. All in all I think that fans of the band and genre will like this CD a lot. Recommended if you can get it for cheaper than the $22.00 it costs here.

the entire album!
Koufax Rocks!.......2004-02-03
If you like Phantom Planet or the Get Up Kids or even Rooney, definitely check out Koufax. I also agree with the other reveiwer - they have an awesome stage presence and great live show.
Get a "Social Life"!!!.......2004-02-03
Koufax is incredible! They have that catchy, 80's punk/ keyboard, dance style akin to Hot Hot Heat or The Faint you can't get out of your head. I saw these guys live a couple months ago and they kicked so much ass on stage. Their sound reminded me of The Anniversary, but with the lyrics of Elvis Costello. It was incredible! I highly recommend Koufax and go see them live!!!!
an alright effort but still wanting.......2003-10-05
I'd never heard of Koufax and I (impulsively) bought this CD based solely on hearing the 30-sec samples of the first two tracks. The album sounded good at first, but after about the 4rd or 5th track I found myself bored already. The vocals have a tendency to be monotonous and predictable, the quasi-jazzy moments seem out of place, and lead singer Suchan is always trying to cram too many words in one line and not enough in others. The intros to some songs could get a bit cheesy and I'm still trying to figure out why the electric piano at times sounded like a cheap Casio. I can't say I hate the album, though I can't say I love it either. It's not a CD you can listen to all the way through in one sitting because it can get tedious, but it does have some very good songs that when heard singly stand on their own merits (Let Us Know and Social Life especially).
Confident young popsters.......2002-11-15
This was an impulse buy--I had never heard Koufax's music before, but I was pleasantly surprised--Social Life is a solid set of guitar/bass/keyboard pop songs that I guess could only be labeled as "alternative" today simply because this kind of pop music doesn't get played on the radio (hmm--maybe if their record company didn't promote them as being as "infectious as the clap"--just kidding!). I have noticed reviews of their other CDs seem to imply that Koufax's previous releases are a little more "emo" than their current one. I don't know about that, but the general mood I get from this disc is happy and optimistic, even when the topics are adultery or breaking off a relationship--the bounce, the jaunty keyboards and the chiming guitars are always in place. A few tunes drive a little harder--the title tune, "Break It Off," and "So Put On" (my favorite on the disc--love that intro)--but nothing too heavy--I'm thinking a less cynical and smart-assed Ben Folds, or of the lift I get from the Canadian band Sloan. Good company. The production is pretty much turn on the mikes and let 'em play; if you let these guys get a little creative in the studio, or have them under an inventive producer (for instance, if you're going to have such a long fade with repetition in the final track, why not spice it up a bit?), you could really secure a classic from these guys in the future. Until then, this is quite enjoyable.

Cue Sesame Street and the A-Team theme..........2002-03-21
The cover says so much; the two guitars dwarved by the glut of synths and sound machines, the black outfits and turtlenecks. It's like this: Koufax, with their synth- and piano-pop, recreate an early 80's feel without harming terribly any memories. The songs are great ("Move Out, Move On" and "Going to Happen" stand out), kind of like a Billy Joel thing, but definitely without the guilt. There's a lot of fun multi-tracking and whirring and spinning going on in the background that only adds to the fun. It's like finding some time-trapped 1983 radio station while on a road trip. You're sure you should be embarrased, but you can't change the the tuner for smiling. Recommended.
catchy 80s sound---love the synths.......2001-08-25
After hearing "Going to Happen" on the vagrant comp another year on the streets, i was intrigued and sought out this album. Not a disappointment at all! Every track is great...personal favorites being the title track and move out, move on. Fans of more mainstream Vagrant bands may be disillusioned, but this is perfect for those who like the anniversary and reggie and the full effect. i hope to hear more from these guys.
Make room, Ben Folds and Joe Jackson..........2000-09-13
These kids are off to a great start, with solid vocals and catchy, synth-driven tunes that won't let you sit still. This album would deserve 5 stars had it managed to capture the energy that "Koufax" brings to the stage. Check out "Move Out, Move On" There need to be more songs like this on the radio.

ok, heres the deal with koufax. theyre a great band but you need a broad music appreciation to enjoy the record. they are like the 80's newwave, meets 70's billy joel, meets the new synth sound of the post punk world. if you can appreciate slow rockin songs then go for it. rocjk and roll is here to stay.

koufax vs reggie vs get up kids.......2000-06-23
The thing about this cd is that it comes on strong but by the end it tends to drag. It sounds like a good band that got bored too fast. As with a lot of the Doghouse bands it sounds like they found out they were good and rushed into the studio. It can be pulled off when it's an album but for an EP that's not so cool. I will keep my ears open for future releases, however.
