Customer Reviews:
Little more than half-hour, layered, prog meets post-punk .......2005-09-10
Stuck in an L.A. traffic jam, I heard this three times in a row today, so I know it by now! I was down to my last CD, and luckily this did not wear out its welcome. The band has gained comparisons to more psychedelic acts, but I hear more a cross of the minimalist drone of Rhys Chatham's NYC chamber art-rock with a hardcore metal instrumental assault like Isis. The lack of vocals heightens this album's visceral punch. Track 4 pummels with a great riff, and then backs off, like a boxer, feinting and skipping for the other half of this (too-)short disc. Track 7, the other strongest song, packs and stacks the sound layers higher and higher. These songs, in fact, would have been listenable at not half but twice the length, a compliment that few albums can earn on my shelf. The remaining songs are all brief, and I only wish they too had been drawn out a bit more.
This would appeal to fans of neo-prog, metal, post-punk, and drone styles. Also, since it's on the Siltbreeze label, which lately seems to have trouble keeping many of its records in print or in stock, it'd be best to grab this sooner than later. An East Coast band that knows well its rock history, but sounds like no copy of one particular predecessor--increasingly rare in these later stages of the rock narcotic's high, decades on.
one of the best records of the year.......2003-11-19
Pummeling instrumental rock. Even if you're not usually into hesh stuff, this will still appeal to you. Well maybe not but check it out anyway. What else are you going to spend your money on, an ugly pair of pants that will be out of style in 3 months? 1929, despite the name, is timeless. Your pants are not.
