3 out of 5 stars Quite good, but..........2000-08-18

The music is great and the setting is intimate, but Bobby Short's delivery ocassionally annoys me. He has a tendency to break into an abrupt piercing warble and his phrasing seems choppy to me. It's not enough to ruin the album, but it can be distracting.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Short at His Best.......2000-01-14

Owning nearly all of Bobby Short's albums, this is the one I play the most. I love his style! He recorded at an actual preformance which added more intimacy to the of the album.

5 out of 5 stars Agree!.......1998-10-07

There cannot be a better night of classic American music than a Bobby Short gig at the Carlyle.

5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME!.......1998-08-24

This is Short at his best. There's no brass section to drown out his voice or his piano, and you can hear the audience at the Cafe Carlyle react to his performance. Short's interpretation, along with Beverly Peer's and Robert Scott's, never gets stale. You can listen to this CD a hundred times and hear new aspects each time.

5 out of 5 stars The Spaces You Forgot to Listen In.......2005-03-29

If you were dreaming and driving at night with someone you love, this album is what you would hear on the wind.

We've got access finally to a lot of independent, new music. This is a time to explore and if you're up for it, anything by Lanterna (Henry Frayne is the key individual) is worth the time and the money. Highways is the latest incarnation of this talented musician's sonic mind. I listen to Highways in the early morning and sometimes driving by myself at night. This is definitely music to listen to by yourself. It is music for the soul--jangly guitar, acoustic rhythms, textured drums, poetic vibrations, and ambient sounds...even an intentional few minutes of silence in there on the title track for those of us who pay attention--and a payoff afterwards...kind of an untitled new composition.

Word is that Lanterna's coming out with a new album sometime in the summer so pay attention. Highways is a great jumping point for the uninitiated though. Elm Street is still my favorite, but I'm really looking forward to the next edition. Stay tuned.

4 out of 5 stars Henry Frayne gives us more luminescent guitarscapes.......2004-03-02

An hour with Henry Frayne, creator of music under the band name Lanterna, is a little like an hour of exploring the ocean depths or the vast reaches of space. He creates sonic pictures of the mind with his lingering, layered electric guitar chords and atmospheric melodies. The leadoff track, "Clear Blue," is just the latest fine example of Mr. Frayne's instrumental art. It shimmers with a kind of subliminal beauty, made by echoing sustained guitar tones that could be described as "ambient," but are best appreciated without concern for category. The CD is called Highways, and listening to its nine tracks is indeed something like a journey along the back roads, sometimes in contemplation and sometimes in sheer enjoyment. On this fourth Lanterna disc, the trend continues (begun on the Sands CD) of mixing in more of a rock feeling with some of the songs. This time it's on the Metheny-esque "Brooklyn" and especially on "Brightness," which features some David Gilmour-like choppy electric guitar chords.

As much of a huge Lanterna fan as I am, I'm a little sad to hear some signs of stagnation on Highways. A song such as "Canyons," a gentle acoustic-electric number that never really goes anywhere, makes me wonder if Henry has taken this particular "instrumental themes" thing about as far as it'll go. I hope not, because I'm still prepared to travel along with him for awhile longer.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

2 out of 5 stars 1981 Release in Living MONO!!!.......2006-01-14

I was instantly disappointed when I put this CD on and listened to the wonderful world of Carole Sager in MONO. I was suspicious right off because the sound was pinched and compressed, so I put on my 100 dollar headphones to discover the CD was transfered to disc in Mono! It is a crime because nobody still recorded music in mono during the early '80s!!! Also the packaging was pretty low-budget, considering the price that was slapped on this disc. Another change from the 1981 LP was how the songs blended into one another. There were some nice segues between tracks on the original Record and the sound production was decent for that time period. My disc faded some songs early and there wasn't the nice segues anymore. Now I see some people are asking 30 bucks for this piece of junk. It could have been a real beauty but Boardwalk really messed up! Let's hope that the Japanese import that is coming soon will be done correctly, and allow this beautiful cd to be heard the way it should be heard again! Yes, in true STEREO!

    5 out of 5 stars outstanding!.......2005-07-24

i really wish carole would produce another album of songs. she's so gifted at expressing the human condition. her songs are well-crafted, interesting, and moving. i really miss her!

5 out of 5 stars Okay..She wouldn't Make it on "American Idol" but..........2005-07-13

People debate all the time if someone can "SING"...Well..I think it is safe to say NOT to many would jump to defend Carole when someone says SHE CAN NOT. However....being one of the 70's best song writer and having enough musical freinds turned out THREE of my all time Lps. I loved this music in 1981 and I still enjoy it just as much. However...as I began with Carole's vocal abilty not being super....but that doesn't stop this from being a really enjoyable Cd.

    1 out of 5 stars Big miss.......2005-02-27

I am a fan of this typ of music, and a fan of carole as a writer, but I must say that I was not impressed at all by her vocals on this album. She was very stiff and very weak sounding. Plus, the overall production of the songs was lacking something as well. Kind of sloppily pasted together. My advice... stick to writing, and not to singing!!

3 out of 5 stars Not Essential Listening.......2003-10-11

I remember being captivated by this album when it was released in 1981. Burt and Carole created the ultimate in sophisticated adult pop music with this grand song-cycle on the meditations of love found, lost, and reexamined. Yet upon hearing this album over 20 years later, it doesn't hold the same appeal. Save for the heartbreaking "You and Me," and the devastatingly honest "Somebody's Been Lyin'" many of songs, although luxuriously produced and arranged, seem fleeting and kind of half baked. I would compare this album to cotton candy: its oh so sweet, but you can get sick of it real quick. I would no longer classify this album as essential listening,

Despite being a clear attempt to cash in on the retro lounge craze of the late 1990s, this charming, seductive 15-song compilation paints a perfect portrait of Dean Martin's soft and tender side. The mood is quiet and dreamy as Martin woos us with the kind of full-throated whisper that was his calling card. Although the accompaniment ranges from small jazz combo to large orchestra with strings, the settings are tasteful and understated throughout, even on the lesser-known toned-down version of "Everybody Loves Somebody." The focus is on Martin's hypnotic voice all the way, and the result is a particularly rewarding collection that includes both Capitol and subsequent Reprise recordings. --Marc Greilsamer

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2006-11-04

Is there a voice that can be compared with Dino's? Not in my book. This selection is soft and seductive - a perfect compilation of songs for late night listening. It's a great addition to the collections of Dean Martin fans or a welcome treat added to a non-Martin CD library.

5 out of 5 stars Too Marvelous For Words!.......2004-06-17

The title says it all. Very romantic and very nice compilation with very beautiful arrangements. If you want the gitl to fall in love with you, make a nice dinner and Dean Martin will do the rest. "Everybody Loves Somebody" has different arrangement than the one that is known.

2 out of 5 stars old shut eyes.......2003-08-30

The lithe and suave club-hopping Italiano who made them swoon with his loose and boozy croon is a distant memory on this expansive collection of late night lullabies. As evidenced in the kitsch cartoon cover and sleepy song selection, the emphasis is on snooze (Dream, I'll Buy That Dream, All I Do Is Dream Of You, Dream A Little Dream Of Me)not booze, bright lights or broads. Unfortunately, Martin's laconic quavering isn't suited to a relentless pillow soft procession of beddy-bye drowsers so gooey and tame they rarely flutter above a deep sigh. Without even a slight variation in tempo, these 15 honeyed orchestrals with Mr. Moonlight only serve to illuminate the failing of his easy vocal style, unless of course you're an insomniac.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, easy perfection.......2003-07-08

This CD was the perfect addition to my ever growing Dean Martin collection. The track selection perfectly sets a warm romantic mood but can also create a lazy sleepy feel as i have found out myself. I have put this CD in many times late at night and fallen alseep listening to the nearly tangible smoothness of Dino's voice.
The only down point to the CD is that "Mean To Me"(a perfect musical score but a little cutesy), "Imagination" (also cutesy) and "I Wish You Love" (which has beat uncharacteristic to the rest of the album), although soft and romantic, seem slightly out of place. "You Belong To Me" or "My Heart Reminds Me" would be more befitting the mood the other songs create.
The other songs, however, are wonderful, each perfectly complimenting the one before it. The first track, "Everybody Loves Somebody" starts it off with the smooth, easy (almost lazy)style that is so distictive of Dino. "Baby, Won't You Please Come Home" (which has a soft bluesy tone) and Let me love you tonight were tailor made for Dino's warm baritone voice.
Start you collection with this cd or add it to you collection either way you will NOT be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Dean Martin at his best!.......2002-11-18

Here is Dean before he became a parody of himself and stopped caring. Dean Martin was essentially a crooner and his voice works best when he is lazily singing through a song in his perfectly relaxed baritone. This is a voice that sounds like a beloved uncle who just began to sing after dinner and a few drinks to his wife in a small italian restaurant. Yes, it sounds that unplanned and unpolished but perfectly charming. A great cd for a romantic evening or just relaxing.

Sometimes Late at Night by Carole Bayer Sager is a very important compact disc.

Don't let this one slip through your fingers.

The Writing, Recording, and Performance rank really high as one of the greatest CD's of all time.

It is a rewarding linear piece filled with great longing.

        5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-03-14

I'm always searching for more virtuosic music to listen to, especially where it involves guitar and conspicuous passion. This has become my favorite guitar CD to listen to (by far), and I suspect will be for a very long time, because no one is putting it together like this. As a bonus, I love great drummers and this record has maniacal drumming by, John Macaluso like you almost never hear. Some of the music is refective and meditatively abstract and surreal as well, yet still manages to expose intense fires which I always love to find.
