It is said that this is their worst album. I disagree..........it is one of their best! Excellent harmonies and early on "unplugged sound". Truly a classic album!

5 out of 5 stars 1 of 2 under-rated CD's by the Bee Gees.......2005-12-28

While The Bee Gees were enjoying the success of their biggest selling albums like "Main Course" and "Spirit's Having Flown". There was 2 albums that were very under-rated because neither produced any hits. One of them titled "Mr. Natural" released in 1974 and this diamond in the ruff "Life In A Tin Can" released in 1973. I guess you could call these years for the Bee gees as the transition years from soft rock to the disco era. While Mr. Natural brought us closer to the upcoming new sound. Life In A Tin Can gave us the scenic route through the country (music) side of the Brothers Gibbs. All the selections on this CD are easy listening and relaxing tunes. I think that "Come Home Johnny Bridie" and "While I Play" had the potential of being top 40 country hits for the trio. And while I'm not a fan of remakes as I mention in my other reviews. I think "South Dakota Morning" would be perfect for country music's greatest Mr. Alan Jackson.

5 out of 5 stars Pop the Tab on the Can, This Album Has Plenty of Life!!!.......2004-06-07

In the long list of forgotten, overlooked, disgarded albums is this album from 1973. It seems that around this time in the Early
70's every older artist or group was in a period of transition, but this really wasn't the case at all, the bottom line is that record companies didn't promote the albums or people themselves
temporarily forgot about this artists or group and went in other
area's of music. Other artists such as Elvis, Orbison, Every Brothers, Beach Boys, just to name a few were at a all time low
in record sales, in all these cases the music was good as always, but lack of record label promotion and lack of interest from the record buying public at this time, the records were commercial flops. As far as this album is concerned, the title track "Saw a Brand New Morning" seems to be full of life and a Ideal lead off track for the album, but the ballads follow. One of the finer ballads on the album is "Living in Chicago" This album contains only 8 songs, but they are good and just important as any in the Bee Gee catalogue. Many people consider this the weakest album by the Bee Gees, in terms of hit singles, none, and in sales, I suppose it is, but NOT in terms of QUALITY, It ranks with their BEST!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Ironic That It's Called "Life In A Tin Can"!.......2004-02-07

This album is perhaps their weakest because it seems like it has no direction! One source called this album "songs filled with sensitive ballads". "I Saw A New Morning" is in the box set which will save most people from buying this album. Like "Tralfagar", I won't say "Don't buy this album" because you may like it. However, they had better albums than this!

4 out of 5 stars Short, but ok.......2004-01-27

Other than "While I Play", most of the songs on this album are aight. The hit song "Saw A New Morning" is without a topic and too plain. The other extremely minor "I Don't Wanna Be The One" is fun to hear. "My Life Has Been A Song" is the only other good song on this cd. Barry's parts are great and the words in the song are very different than their usual routined words. "Come Home Johnnie Bridie" is weird, but somewhat catchy. Especially that chorus. "Living In Chicago" is way too long for no reason, just like the earlier Odessa. "Method To My Madness" sounds like a throw-in. They really didn't spend time on that song for sure. "South Dakota Morning" is boring. No melodies, no good voices, and boring words. But overall, not a horrible cd and put it together its a pretty good cd. Not a must have though.

Note: This is a re-issue until Rhino Records releases the Remastered Expanded version.

Even though this CD barely garnered a hit, "Saw A New Morning" and was poorly received by the public, the concerts were still going strong during this period (1973). Hedging more towards country, The Bee Gees crafted some fine acoustic work here with, "South Dakota Morning, "Living In Chicago" and the upbeat rocker, "Come Home Johnny Bride". "I Don't Wanna Be The One" and "My Life Has Been A Song" are a tad bit of the old cornball ballads. However, "While I Play" is a Barry Gibb standout cut. Recorded with such celebrated studio musicians as, Jim Keltner on drums, pianist Jane Getz, 'Sneaky Pete' on steel guitar and the Bee Gees own, Alan Kendall, this album is first rate. It is a shame it only clocks in at less than 33 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Marvelous!.......2001-05-21

One of the best CDs I've bought in years! Granted, I'm a bit Lerner-biased having played Col. Pickering in My Fair Lady before...and I just love his stuff anyways -- but nonetheless this CD is a GREAT buy! I found it in a store somewhere about 2-3 months ago, and I don't think it's left my CD player since. Domingo's occasional appearances add SUCH classy humor that I just roll over laughing everytime he sings! Granted, one must be at least fairly familiar with the story and flow of My Fair Lady to get all the jokes, but even without that, it's still a series of stellar performances. Buy this CD!

For hardcore fans of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, the double-CD The Ultimate Showboat will be a ride down memory lane you won't soon forget. Musical reissues rarely get a comprehensive treatment like this collection taken from rare cast recordings, revivals, radio productions, and pop-vocal records (all dating between 1928 and 1947). Obviously, the sound quality on many of the earlier recordings isn't the best, but where else can we hear legendary vocalists such as Paul Robeson, Allan Jones, and Bing Crosby all singing timeless tunes from one of America's great musicals? Rarities abound: the soft voice of Helen Morgan is captured in a rare radio transcription from 1938 singing "Bill," "Show Boat: Scenario" is a composition commissioned from Kern by Artur Roszinksi for the Cleveland Orchestra, and numerous tracks from the 1946 Broadway revival are included. Probably not the first Show Boat you should pick up, but it's a must-have for completists. --Jason Verlinde

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jolson is the king of Ol' Man River.......2005-08-19

This collection includes various renditions of "Ol' Man River" (Spencer, Crosby, Roberson) with Kenneth Spencer displaying the deepest bass, but, as usual, the smooth singing Al Jolson reigns supreme on his version. Another fabulous track is Colette Lyons singing "Life Upon the Wicked Stage". Lyons chills me with her rolling tongue.
