This is not a review about Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon's hair. However--as any self-respecting fan knows--in country music, after proving you can pluck a guitar and carry a tune, the power of the right hairstyle is not to be underestimated. Johnny Cash, in fact, was famously vain about his locks--perhaps one of the few things he was vain about--and many a guitar store employee can attest to the fact that when the Man in Black came in to buy his special brand of guitar pick, his hair was dyed a jet black more often seen on a boy of 20 than a man of 60. In any case, Phoenix and Witherspoon's performances as Johnny and June Carter Cash succeed more in the style and hair department than in their musicality. Phoenix fares better than his co-star in reinventing the Cash mystique, and his sweet, almost earnest interpretation of "Get Rhythm" is as charming as it is honest. Unfortunately, the powerful song "Ring of Fire" is flat and wholly without the narrative pull it had when Cash sang it. And Witherspoon is simply not up to the warbling task she's faced with in singing as June Carter Cash. (To be fair, it's hard to know who would be, but the estimable Loretta Lynn or Tift Merritt would have had better luck). Carter Cash's honeyed gift with melody, and the largeness of her voice, honed over decades in live performance, is hard to replicate for even a seasoned singer, and predictably, Witherspoon falls short of the mark. It's certainly seductive to imagine that playing a figure as compelling as Johnny or June would allow an actor to channel the soul and some of the talent of the artist, but the closest this record comes is in "Cry, Cry, Cry," where Phoenix's gravelly voice offers the same sustained thrill that made Johnny Cash irresistible--to June and his fans. --Megan Halverson

Not a carbon copy.......2007-07-08
Within the liner notes of the gem of a CD, the director of the movie "Walk the Line" was quoted as saying he wasn't looking for a Johnny Cash impersonator, but for somebody who could make the legend come alive.
I personally really like Joaquin Phoenix' smooth, sexy voice. My favorites are "Get Rhythm" and "Walk the Line."
I strongly reccommend this CD.
Walk the line CD.......2007-06-13
The music was wonderful. I think Reese Witherspoon needs to do more signing. I certainly would buy her CD
walk the line.......2007-06-09
Disappointed with this CD lacked body and character music sounded thin and repetative
Walk the Line.......2007-06-01
A wonderful movie. Joaquin Phoenix was ideal as the young Johnny Cash - 19 to 37 years, The producers said they didn't want an actor and actress to portray John and June precisely and this is what I saw. The singing and guitar playing was right on. Joaquin should have won an Oscar also!
Great.......2007-05-17
I bought the cd for my husband who is a huge fan of the movie. He absolutely loves the cd! He has practically worn it out listening to it.

Customer Reviews:
Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Dokken & Norum rock!.......2006-11-12
Every single song on this CD is excellent....how can you go wrong with Don Dokken's awesome vocals and John Norum's unbelievable guitar playing?! Excellent lyrics to the songs and just all around great music!
Don Dokken-The greatest!.......2006-07-21
This is the best solo effort that I have ever seen. This album reminds me of Dokken through and through, cachy choruses, shreading guitar solos, I mean what more can you ask for. If you remember Dokken in the 80's when they where at their best then you will totally love this album and for under 7.00 bucks what more could you ask for! This is definatly one of my top 5 cd's.
Well..........2006-07-15
I pause because I can't give this an affirmative "five stars" simply because the choruses are not really that accessible. The choruses are quite subdued, leaving a lesser opportunity for the tunes to be radio friendly. Still, the first four tracks are really pretty good from both an instrumental and a lyrical standpoint. The production level is awesome, too, which helps the overall sound a lot. There are no tracks like "Into the Fire" or "Dream Warriors" on here. Those are what we would call radio friendly tunes and it is quite ironic because even though both Don and George had ego clashes, which really was the nemesis of the bands breakup, they were both moving away from really commercial sounding records. Further, both found that success eluded them when on their own. This is a pretty good CD, though.
Another great DOKKEN album.......2006-02-09
Even though this is under the name Don Dokken I consider this a Dokken album. A melodic metal album with great guitar and vocals. Don put togethor a supergroup for this album with members of Europe, Accecpt and Motorhead. I actually consider Billy White better than John Norum! Billy isn't quite as good as Lynch but there are only a few guys in the history of rock music that were/are. Any way the added guitar harmonies are great and the solos are amazing. Don even plays some guitar on this album...something he hadn't done since Breaking The Chains. This is a great album and could have been under the name Dokken.
1.Crash 'N' Burn- 9/10 A great melodic song. The soft intro is great and it leads into an awesome fast melodic rocker. Don's vocals are very strong too. An excellent guitar solo by Billy White too. A great opener
2.1000 Miles Away- 10/10 Another great melodic song. Don Dokken's vocals and lyrics are very strong and the guitar part is excellent. Another great guitar solo too.
3.When Some Nights- 8/10 A good melodic song. The riff is good and Don's vocals are good aswell. A great guitar solo with some excellent harmonies.
4.Forever- 10/10 Another classic song. This sounds like classic Dokken. Don's vocals are great and so is the guitar riff. Another great harmony guitar solo by Billy White and John Norum. This song is also very melodic like the others.
5.Living a Lie- 9/10 A good poppy song. The riff is good and so is the chorus. More strong vocals from Don Dokken too. A great guitar solo too.
6.When Love Finds a Fool- 10/10 A great ballad. The music is beautiful and Don's voice is excellent. The chorus is great and the guitar sound is very good. Billy White's guitar solo is amazing and good enough to be one of Lynch's guitar solos. One of the best power ballads ever!
7.Give It Up- 10/10 Another great melodic song. The riff is great and the drum sound is excellent. Don's vocals are great as always and the chorus is good too. The shredding solo is great and sounds a lot like Lynch! Another classic.
8.Mirror Mirror- 10/10 Another classic! Don's vocals are excellent and the riff is great. The chorus is great too! Don's only "solo" hit and one of the best songs on the album. Great solos by Billy white and John Norum too! This has that classic Dokken sound.
9.Stay- 10/10 A great song that was going to be on the next Dokken album. This was written with Mick brown and the drums are great. The riff is great and Don's vocals are excellent. The chorus is great too. Another great guitar solo by Billy White.
10.Down in Flames- 10/10 A great intro which some excellent harmonies. A huge sound on this song too. Don's voice is excellent as always too. The riff is great too. A great chorus too. This sounds like it could have been on Under Lock And Key. Another great solo too. One of my favorites on the album.
11.The Hunger A great fast paced song with a good riff and excellent vocals. The chorus is excellent too. This sounds like classic Dokken too. The bridge is great and is my favorite part of the song. 2 amazing fast and melodic solos. These are solos that are up to George Lynch's standards!! A classic and my favorite song on the album!
The album is a must have for any dokken fans or melodic metal fans. This is more mellow than the past Dokken albums but still sounds like classic Dokken. Nothing really left to say execpt that this is a masterpeice!
Don Dokken- Lead Vocals, Guitar
Billy White- Lead Guitar
John Norum- Lead Guitar, Vocals
Mickey Dee- Drums, Percussion
Peter Baltes, Bass, Vocals
As good as (and, in some cases, SURPASSES) Dokken.......2005-12-12
I am a longtime Dokken fan, and I was heartbroken when they disbanded in 1988-9 when Don and George just could not work out a reconciliation.
When this was first released, I admit I wondered how Don would do as a solo artist. This is quite a band assembled here - guitarist John Norum from Europe (careful observers will note that John Norum teamed up with Don Dokken again on the Dokken CD LONG WAY HOME), bassist Peter Baltes from Accept, drummer Mikkey Dee (a stint with King Diamond) and a great guitarist named Billy White. LOADS of talent here. This release totally exceeded my expectations - an all-around great release with no "fillers".
This CD kicks off with Crash 'N' Burn - one of my favorite songs of all time. A fast-paced song with a fantastic guitar solo. I'd rate this one a 10 - Don's vocals are great, and Dee / Baltes make for a fine rhythm section.
I love Don's vocals on 1000 Miles Away and When Love Finds a Fool. The latter features a sad-sounding acoutstic intro, and these songs touch upon the familiar Dokken-esque theme of being wronged by the ol' femme-fatale. Almost like "Alone Again" from TOOTH AND NAIL. Don Dokken can sing and croon with the best of rock's vocalists. "Stay" and "Down In Flames" are lyrically similar to the femme-fatale but those songs are more pop-metal than power ballads - cool stuff.
"Give It Up" is a song similar in theme to "Will The Sun Rise" from UNDER LOCK AND KEY. Kind of the same anti-war lyrics in each track. "Mirror Mirror" was a single released from this - that mid-tempo rocker is probably the most commercial friendly song from this recording.
I LOVE Peter Baltes' bass playing on "Forever" and "When Love Finds a Fool". And the song "The Hunger" is just an all-out rocker (as is Crash N Burn) with some great drumming exhibited. I think Ken Mary is actually the drumer for that last track - listen to his work on CD's released by Gregg Guiffria's band HOUSE OF LORDS - that is some excellent skin-bashing too.
This release stands up to probably EVERYTHING Dokken recorded. For only $7, just buy it new. It's got something for everyone and is one of my favorites.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

CRUSHED BY THE CRUSH.......2005-01-26
I heard a raggedy recording of John Hiatt and Ry Cooder doing "The Crush" live on Hiatt's 1983(?) World Tour...and it knocks the socks off the recorded version here...it's a clean shot, no invasive production frills, and on top of accompanying Hiatt on vocals, Ry Cooder plays a smokin' skyrocket slide, like something Earl Hooker might do but blown out LIVE. And it's an extraordinary sound that perfectly complements Hiatt's own riveting swamp gas guitar. WHEN will the record company WISE UP and RELEASE THE TAPES from this tour? Inquiring minds want to know cause...they're DYNAMITE.
You put the crush on me.......2004-09-05
Of the three albums Hiatt recorded for Geffen, this is the least interesting. The main culprit is Nashville producer Norbert Putnam, who used the kind of synth arrangements that carbon dated all the albums in the 80's that used them in an attempt to sound of the day. The highlights remain, as usual, the terrific songwriting. "The Usual" was covered by Bob Dylan, and "When We Ran" by Linda Ronstadt. Two other great compositions are here, the humorous "She Said The Same Things To Me" and the classic "The Crush." The "American Elvis Costello" tag finally comes with a payoff, as EC joins Hiatt on a soulful cover of the Spinners' "Living A Little, Laughing A Little." The overproduction here has often made me long for rerecorded versions of a few of the songs (I'd love to hear the title track or "I Got a Gun" stripped down). But as far as Hiatt albums go, "Warming Up To The Ice Age" is even less characteristic of the artist than the oft-slagged "All Of A Sudden."
Hiatt Rocks Like a Real Man.......2000-05-23
John Hiatt wasn't well-known outside of select music industry circles at the time of this recording (1983?). Although a well-respected writer with at least 3 previous albums to his credit, Hiatt may still have been better known for his stint in Ry Cooder's band (& you've got to be a pretty dang good guitar player to get a paycheck from Ry). This album was probably an attempt by Geffen Records to get John into the mainstream with slick, punchy production emphasizing Hiatt's elastic vocals and considerable guitar skills. But the songs are what grabs you here. "The Usual" is an edgy driving twist off a mellow-down-easy groove. "She Said the Same Things to Me" was destined to be an unknown classic for Johnny Adams. "Living A Little" is a stirring duet with Elvis Costello. "I've Got a Gun" should be an anthem for abused women, but there's a little too much malevolence to vengence to make it to prime time. "Burning Down the Zero House" and "Warming Up to the Ice Age" may sound a little too early 80's for some folks, but Hiatt's passion and playing carry way too much weight to be lost in production values. This is a great, full-out rocking record by a top shelf songwriter who can also sing & play "Like a Real Man".
Sharp as a knife.......1999-06-16
There's a kind of polished metal feel to this one which comes from the playing and production. It's a bit too clean and sharp for me, not at all like Slow Turning for instance. Solid songs, great vocals... but still it just misses the mark and is overshadowed by the great Hiatt albums starting with Riding With the King. A good one to test how loud your hi-fi will go!
Once again: John Hiatt is GOD!!!!.......1998-08-25
My mom, dad, and brother had the pleasure of having dinner with John Hiatt, many years ago. When I was much younger, I went to one of his concerts, and i still remember it clearly. This man is perhaps the only artist that my family will all listen to without bickering over. He has a style all of his own, this album at this price is a steal, so is riding with the king, stolen moments, slow turning, any john hiatt cd that you don't have but find: BUY IT! I urge you to, and believe me, you won't regret it!

As a rule, funny-punk doesn't age very well, but there's something about this Southern California act's self-mocking clowning that's let it stand the test of time. That probably has something to do with their decision to aim for the lowest-common-denominator wherever possible--via songs like "Girls Turn 18 Every Day" and "Pizza Train (She Delivers)." Sure, some younger fans will be scratching their heads as singer David Quackenbush invites them to "Join Us for Pong"--not to mention wondering who the heck special guest Moon Unit Zappa might be--but the gleeful three-chords-and-a-cloud-of-dust approach easily quashes any objections. Perfect for frat parties and beer blasts, providing no sensitive souls are within spitting distance. --David Sprague
Customer Reviews:
The Vandals find their footing.......2005-08-13
This is the album where th line-up stabilized for once and The Vandals headed into the goofy catchy punk they have been known for for the past decade. There are some absolutely great moments on here, notably Pizza Tran, Join Us For Pong, Summer Lovin' and Anti, but you must know there are some absolutely horrible moments on here as well. They were bad then, and they're worse now. I'm talking about "Do The Rog", "Hey Homes" and pretty much the rest of the album. I love the Vandals, but I am simply being completely honest. 50% brilliant, 50% awful.
Also, this is not one of their first albums. They had many others in the 80's with a different lineup. Joe Escalante is the only constant, and even he switched from drums to bass/lawyer.
Great Orange County Punk!.......2004-12-11
Well the Vandals are awesome. There is not a bad song on this cd! The songs are fast and energetic, probably the best Vandals album next to The Quickening. Any punk fan should have this.
Pizza Tran- Good Start. 8/10
The Rodge- Funny lyrics, a dance song. 7/10
Join Us For Pong- Fast, energetic, and hilarious. 10/10
Hey Holmes! Great lyrics, awesome guitar. 10/10
Girls Turn 18- An ok song, probably the worst on the cd. 5/10
Kill My Tenant- Another ok song. 6/10
Summer Lovin`- A cover from Grease, very funny. 9/10
The Day Farrah Fawcett Died- Another funny song, fast! 10/10
Anti- Best on the album! 10/10
Teenage Idol- Another okay song, sort of weird. 6/10
Small Wonder- It grows on you, 4:30 seconds long, fast lyrics8/10
Phone Machine- A great song after Small Wonder! 8/10
Shi'ite Punk- Western style, love it! 10/10
China Town- The lyrics are true, funny song. 9/10
Working For The Man- A hardcore type song. 9/10
Kokomo- A cover, you know how they are. 6/10
HILARIOUS punk CD!.......2002-11-23
This CD is a great punk disc. It's obvious the guys were young when this was written, but I think it's very good for their age/inexperience (with exception of Joe Escalante, who was in the original early '80's group of the same name)
Cool!.......2000-06-13
It is one outstanding CD! I bought it for my sister because she loves grease and the vandals (SUmmer Lovin') I love it! better than Stevo!
Really Cool CD.......2000-06-12
I love Punk Rock and always loved the Vandals, and this totaly rocks the planet buy it.
