Pink Martini should be known as the little orchestra that walks a fine line in its music. The Portland, Oregon, outfit is deeply influenced by Latin music, jazz, cabaret, cinema scores, and a smattering of other styles. But rather than simply aping legendary artists in their prime--and fooling only a few dim bulbs in the process--band shakes things up by writing its own material, or at least creating tasteful new arrangements that fit within the band's unique post-lounge framework. The band keeps the playful musical vibe on Hang On Little Tomato, but jettisons what kitsch factor it had, choosing to focus wholly on original material or stuff that isn't recognizable to the average music fan. It's been a seven-year wait for fans since the band's fun debut, Sympathique, and while the blush is now off the rose, the band's creative ambitions and talent are never better displayed than here on their second effort. - Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band and Japanese film noir is the 12-piece Pink Martini.
Part language lesson, part Hollywood musical, the Portland, Oregon-based "little orchestra" was originally created in 1994 by Harvard-graduate Thomas M. Lauderdale to play at political fundraisers for progressive causes such as public broadcasting, clean water, libraries, civil rights and affordable housing. In the years following, Pink Martini has gone on to perform its multilingual repertoire on concert stages, in smoky clubs and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Greece, Turkey, Taiwan, Lebanon and the U.S.
Hang On Little Tomato, Pink Martini's much-anticipated second album, features a collection of original songs written by the band and its extended family as well as a few undiscovered gems reinterpreted in high style. Drawing on themes articulated on Sympathique, Hang On Little Tomato is the result of the group's diverse collaborations and inspirations. From an advertisement for Hunt's Ketchup in a 1964 issue of Life magazine to a dance sequence in the 1950 Italian film Anna, Hang On Little Tomato includes songs in French, Italian, Japanese, Croatian, Spanish and English. "Una Notte a Napoli," for example, was written with Alba Clemente - an Italian stage and television star in the 1970s - and DJ Johnny Dynell of the legendary New York-based nightclub Jackie 60. In a reworking of the Japanese song "Kikuchiyo To Mohshimasu," Pink Martini collaborated with Hiroshi Wada, the slide guitarist whose group originally recorded and released the song in 40 years ago.
Originally released in 1997, Sympathique met with rave reviews worldwide, finding a place within the hearts of many and selling well over a half million copies. Building its legacy through unstoppable word of mouth, select high profile symphony dates, prominent placement in film and television and fashionable private appearances, Pink Martini has returned with their highly-anticipated follow up. Hang On Little Tomato is every bit the new album Pink Martini fans have been longing for. Lush string arrangements, soaring vocals and cosmopolitan rhythms unfurl from the brilliant international hemisphere that is Pink Martini.
Customer Reviews:
Hang on Little Tomato.......2007-07-02
I love this group and this CD does not disappoint. A unique mix of selections enhanced, as always, by the outstanding musical talent of the group.
Quirky but Nice.......2007-06-27
So...I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Hang on Little Tomato, as I had heard an excerpt from another album on Public Radio, the one where China sings Que Sera with carnival music in the background. That piqued my interest. I did listen to the samples before I ordered it, but couldn't really tell much. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I am a classical music fan and have spent many years singing choral music in a number of languages so the songs sung in French and Italian to a Latin rhythm were intriguing. I also liked their "big band" styling. There was only one song on the album that I didn't like, and considering that they wrote most of the music, that's a pretty significant average for me.
The World is Flat... and Pink.......2007-04-29
Seamlessly crossing genres and generations and geographies, Pink Martini's second album is stellar, erudite, and delightful. It is perhaps a wee bit less dazzling than their first (Sympathique), but far above and beyond most of today's music. I've waited a few years to write my review on this one, but since the third album is being released in May 2007, I thought I'd better get moving.
Pink Martini is a group of 15 musicians, occasionally augmented by additional strings. There is one musician from the first album missing: Pepe Raphael, who was a vocalist as well as songwriter. His departure may explain why "Hang On Little Tomato" is a bit less "edgy" than the first album. (You can hear Pepe on the album "Latenight Betty" by Pepe and the Bottle Blondes, which is quite good but at times a bit too camp/kitschy.)
Every song on "Hang On Little Tomato" is a work of art. In the opening of the first cut, a sea of strings sweeps you into a Cuban nightclub, and China Forbes, Pink Martini's leading lady, draws you in with her sultry vocal delivery. She caresses the lyrics "I know a falling star can't fall forever, but let's never stop falling in love." As the song builds, each talented musician in the group adds to the charm; the keyboard, the trumpets, the percussion: perfection. In addition to providing luscious vocals, China Forbes shares songwriting credit for this along with Thomas M. Lauderdale, the group's pianist.
The second cut, "Anna (el negro zumbon)," continues the Latin flavor, featuring a duet with China and Timothy Nishimo (the group's replacement for Pepe, I suppose, as Timothy was not on the first album). This is one of those songs that forces you to move to the beat; quite fun. Superb percussion, including Heinz the barking dog!
The title cut, "Hang On Little Tomato," features a marvelously mellow clarinet prelude, and a boop-boop-be-doop vocal by China Forbes. Sheer delight. Next comes "The Gardens of Sampson and Beasley," another original work that uses strings and harp to mold a mellow charm, and features a bit of "My Darling Clementine" woven in. The garden referenced is Bella Madrona in Sherwood, Oregon, owned by Jim Sampson and Geoff Beasley.
Continuing the mellow mood, Pink Martini next returns to film noir land, offering a sparse, nostalgic "Veronique," with chilling vocals and trumpet performed by Robert Taylor. French is next, with "Dansez-Vous." I originally thought this was the weakest cut on the album, but after seeing them perform this number live, I have a different opinion. In concert, an extended version of this song is a showcase for the multitude of musical talent that resides in the people of Pink Martini.
With "Lilly," the Latin groove returns, and two trumpets dance with staccato piano and piquant percussion. We quickly jump back to French, with a spare, haunting, wistful, "Autrefois." I love this song! It starts out with a funky drumbeat, which quickly is joined by nostalgic piano chords and a soul-searing violin. What a delightful juxtaposition--the modern percussion and the classic violin, piano, and mandolin. And the longing lyrics tell a tale of fond memories "a good long time ago." The soul capture continues on the next cut, U Plavu Zoru. Patsy Chang's opening cello is unbelievable (see this number in concert for a true soul-shaking experience!). The lyrics of this original song are in Croatian. Why? Why not? Music is the communication form that still delights even if one can't understand the words. "U Plavu Zoru" highlights the outstanding musicianship of each individual member, and the talent of the team, as they take us on a symphonic, operatic journey featuring strings, brass, keyboard, and China's gorgeous voice.
The next cut, "Clementine," brings back memories of the sixties. This song channels Burt Bacharach, or perhaps Herb Alpert, and trombone aficionados will be very pleased. The mid-twentieth century tribute continues with "Una Notte a Napoli." This song could have been used instead of "Tu Vuo' Fa L'Americano" in that Italian nightclub scene in "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
In a very Pink Martini move, the next song jumps to Japan, and a Japanese pop song from the sixties. For its cover of this song, Pink Martini enlisted Hiroshi Wada to recreate his slide guitar from the original. This music embodies all the mystery and distinction of Japanese culture, and through simplicity creates great beauty. To continue the "beauty through simplicity" theme, the next number, "Aspettami (Wait for Me)," features only the voice of China Forbes and the guitar of Dan Faehnle, blending to create soothing charm.
And finally, a bit of bit of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos: Song of the Black Swan. This lush instrumental track carries us, blissfully, to the conclusion of Pink Martini's magical musical world tour. I wish politicians could bring harmony across cultures as well as these musicians.
All but three of the album cuts were written by members of the group, which is the inverse of the case on their first album. I believe you will enjoy and never tire of this CD. If you have the chance to see Pink Martini in concert, run, don't walk. I'll see them again in two months. And remember the new one arriving in May 2007!
Now here's a reason to watch PBS.......2007-04-26
This CD is glorious! Listening to it almost makes PBS worth watching. LOL! I love that this CD is multi-lingual and jazzy. This is one of my favorite CDs.
Better than ever.......2007-03-28
Phenomenal! Love the varying languages. Love the vocals. The songs keep running through my head long after I listen. I hope it's not so long before the next album!

For many listeners, Little Voice will be their first exposure to this soulful singer/songwriter, but it's actually Sara Bareilles' second record. Her first, the self-released Careful Confessions, led to a deal with Epic. Since then, Bareilles has opened for Marc Broussard and Maroon 5. She's also become a bonafide soundtrack queen with tracks featured in female-centric films Girl Play, Loving Annabelle, and Monster-in-Law. As with her out-of-print debut, the UCLA grad wrote every song on her first major label recording (Little Voice features re-worked versions of several demo numbers). Like the portrait on the back of the CD--Bareilles in strappy black dress and lace-free high-tops--the piano-playing chanteuse combines the sweet with the scruffy. While her jazzy pop melodies are radio-ready, her relationship-oriented lyrics can be unexpectedly salty ("Bottle Up" and "Come Round Soon" wouldn't pass FCC muster). A little profanity here and there, however, doesn't indicate tough-girl attitude--Amy Winehouse can rest easy--so much as a desire to express herself freely. As Bareilles explains in "Love Song," "I'm trying to let you hear me as I am." (Not surprisingly, her degree is in communications.) Fans of Sarah McLachlan and Alicia Keyes will find much to like here. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Long time coming,,,.......2007-07-13
Sara has had the talent for many years to create someting like this, and the recording lables are behind the times as far as signing Sara is concerned. Someone as creative and talented as Sara should have had an album out 5 years ago. Never mind the delay in release, this album is the jackpot in up coming artists. The voice, the lyrics, the rhythm and the feeling all mesh into twelve tracks called "Little Voice". This album is a must have for those of you who like jazz piano, strong powerful female voices, and music you can listen to over and over without it ever getting old.
Addicting New Voice!.......2007-07-10
Sara Bareilles has put together a wonderful CD. Thanks to the iTunes song of the week, I heard "Love Song," and the rest was history. I immediately pre-ordered the CD and it was worth the wait. I'm in love with just about every song on the CD. (There is an extended version of "Love Song" on the CD. I imagine, iTunes put out the radio edit.)
Sara has a wonderful singing voice and the lyrics are intelligent and catchy. Sara has immense musical talent and I can't wait to hear what she puts out next!
Jennifer
Great album, but see her live.......2007-07-10
Sara Bareilles is the real deal - she sings like a dream, rocks the piano, and breaks out the catchy hooks like nobody's business. Her major-label debut blends the funky, soulful edge of Aretha Franklin with Natasha Bedingfield's pop sensibility, but there's no question Sara is a unique artist in her own right. If you're looking for smart, jazzy piano-pop that's easy on the ears but a step above in lyrics, pick up this album as the perfect feel-good summer soundtrack.
Lyrically and musically, the track list is solid, spanning ballads, kiss-offs to lousy ex-boyfriends and record executives, and the dreams and troubles of making it on your own. The production, while crystal clear, has its ups and downs. Most of the time Sara's vocal and the many instruments work well together, especially the drums propelling the ridiculously catchy "Morningside", a standout track that has taken over my CD player. Other highlights are the percussion on the bluesy "Many the Miles", and the gentle strings stirring in a great new version of "Gravity". But I'm not feeling the production on two of my old favorites, "Fairytale" and "Come Round Soon", which sound cluttered and overdone. Sara is the kind of artist who can carry a song on the power of her voice alone, and it's disappointing for longtime fans to hear it needlessly compressed. At the same time, take this as simply a recommendation to see her in concert. Sara's raw talent is obvious even underneath the bells and whistles, and this album still works as a strong introduction to a five-star singer. Get ready to wear out your copy.
Not just a great CD, but an awesome Album........2007-07-08
Every song on this album is great. Each one could build a career, each one could be a single. They span a myriad of emotions and moods, but all run rife with the amazingly amazing vocal prowess of a girl whose voice is anything but little. 'Between the Lines' affects me as the saddest, most beautifully bittersweet pleasure for my ears. And songs I thought of as already complete from her independent release "Careful Confessions" (find it if you can and buy it at any price!) have matured considerably, and leave your ears tingling between every track.
She is as smart as she is funny as she is beautiful as she is rapturous in song. All that comes through in this little bitty jewel case.
Enjoy.
Absolutely Awesome.......2007-07-07
I first heard Sara in concert in a small venue in Seattle with my husband. Both my husband and I absolutely love her music. She is absolutely the best... a true singer/songwriter with talent that runs deep and her music moves and entertains you.

Album Description
It's the harmonies that draw you in. The big, lush, gorgeous harmonies. You're hooked and it's then that you realize that it's not just the harmonies. Everything about Little Big Town is unique to the country music world. Comprised of Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet, Little Big Town's configuration of two men and two women is unique. Also unique is that there is no single lead vocalist all four take on lead vocal responsibilities. Little Big Town's voices blend so effortlessly one would think they'd been singing together since childhood. While that isn't quite true, their backgrounds are strikingly similar. All four band members began singing in church and with their families and Phillip even performed in a family band. Each then blossomed in their craft during college, a career as a professional musician the clear path for each. Equity. 2005.
Customer Reviews:
Great Musicianship and Awesome Vocals!!!!.......2007-06-19
This album is a real gem! I first was exposed to this group through watching them do "Good As Gone" on Nashville Star last season. Prior reviews which criticize their similarity to Fleetwood Mac are really unfair to both LBT and Fleetwood Mac. Yes, they were definitely influenced by Fleetwood Mac, but they are extremely talented in their own right! The vocal talent and musicianship is first rate!
My one criticism (which is minor) involves a certain similarity of the first three songs on the album. In other words, there is a very similar vibe in a number of songs such as Good As Gone, Boondocks, and Bones...(Tryin' to Find A Reason - also similar vibe - is later in the album song order).
There is some great guitar work which includes some very impressive Dobro work from Jerry Douglas. This album is definitely worth getting!
Hillbilly Gold.......2007-05-21
Like Ray Charles used to say, "Country music artist tell great stories." I'm slowly becoming more of a contemporary country fan. And I stress; contemporary. The first time I heard 'Bring it on Home, I thought, "I kind of like that song." A good friend let me listen to the CD and I was hooked. 'The Road to Here,' is a fun piece of work; welcome to the family!
It's all good visiting Little Big Town.......2007-05-15
Okay, so I'm totally re-writing & re-submitting my rating of this album. I went to a "Little Big Town" Concert and was blown away. They were incredible and I own them a huge apology for only giving them three stars the first time around. The harmonies were amazing...so, I've gone back and listened to the album & deemed myself delerious in relation to my first review. The four singers are perfectly balanced and the songs are fun. No wonder they won big Country Music Awards for this album. So, ignore my first rating and buy the album.
love it.......2007-05-14
Great CD! And they are just as good live in concert! I recommend it. Balance between slow songs and upbeat songs.
Great music for a non-country fan!.......2007-05-09
I purchased this CD because I heard some of their songs on TV while browsing through channels. Although considered a country group, their music has a Fleetwood Mac sound to it. I never thought I'd purchase a country CD, but Little Big Town has changed my mind about the genre. Great harmony and great musicians!

Elizabeth Mitchell is to children's music what a band like True Love is to indie rock: an insider's darling. Which can only mean one thing: any day now, she's going to blow up huge. You Are My Little Bird, Mitchell's third kids' CD and her first on the well-respected Smithsonian Folkways label, hews closely to the folkie-but-never-hokey sensibility she laid out so beautifully on the first two records. Here are 17 short, soft, sweet, homespun-sounding songs, some of them easily recognizable ("Peace Like a River," "Three Little Birds," "Down in the Valley"), some of them inexplicably obscure (Neil Young's "Little Wing," Gillian Welch and David Rawling's "Winter's Come and Gone," Francois Hardy's magical "If You Listen"). Throughout, even on tracks where her young daughter joins in, Mitchell's warm whisper of a voice compels a close listen, not just because the production is so spare you can practically feel her breath on your cheek but because there's something in her phrasing that suggests an old, wise soul. Miraculously, the bird concept never gets clunky; two exotic foreign-language songs--one Korean and one Japanese--help, but the real credit belongs to this all-around superb disc's sole stab at the subversive: Mitchell's stamp on "What Goes On," the Velvet Underground favorite, practically sails off the disc with its sunniness. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Perfect for kids/adults alike..........2007-07-08
We love this album! It has a fabulous folk sound and I enjoy it as well as the kids as the tunes are not condescending to children. The album consists of a variety of classics including a few from other cultures. Mitchell's voice is lovely and unpretentious. A perfect album to any children's collection.
Another great choice for kids and adults!.......2007-06-24
This is another great album by Elizabeth Mitchell. We have several of her CD's now and they are filled with songs that your kids will enjoy and so will you. Mitchell's voice has such a nice quality to it and your kids will want to sing along to this collection. If you're looking for something different that won't make you feel like you want to stick a screwdriver in your ear (like some of the music geared toward the preschool set), then this is a great choice.
Hasn't left our CD changer since we got it.......2007-06-05
My 3-year-old and I first found Elizabeth Mitchell when I bought her fantastic CD with Lisa Loeb, "Catch the Moon," so I was excited to hear she had a new release. My daughter loves it so much, this CD hasn't left the changer in my car since I got it last year. And best of all, Mommy likes to listen to it, too.
I adore this CD .......2007-05-19
This is our third Elizabeth Mitchell CD, and I cannot get enough of it. All of her songs are so melodic and soothing. I appreciate the history of the music as well. Ms. Mitchell tells why she chose the songs she did on the insert included with the CD. She points to the great singers and songwriters of our past and helps us see how the music then is still relevant and enjoyable today. I highly recommend all of her CDs, you will not be disappointed.
Very sweet album.......2007-05-09
We helped the Easter Bunny buy this for our daughter. She's 7, and our middle one, so new kids' music is a must every now and again. This is a lovely album.

Kids songs.......2007-07-03
I gave this cd to my grand daughter, because she loves music. Knew very little about it until I received sincere thanks from my daughter and son inlaw for a great CD
2 year old's favorite.......2007-06-13
I feel sorry for the child's mother who won't listen to this CD because she doesn't like it.
I took the vow of motherhood before getting pregnant....I will watch Oobie & enjoy it....I will play in mud puddles & enjoy it....you get the idea
Is this CD a replacement for my adult music? Ugh, no.
Does my 2 yr old son say "school bus song!!" excitedly every time we head for the car? Yes.....
My kids LOVE this CD. They relate to the silly, (& as complained about) sometimes off key singing. They also love the true toddler voices that are mushy sounding just like their own newly developing vocabulary.
My son listens so intently that he could recite all the songs in the first week. Adorable.
Has all the good songs.......2007-05-30
If you're looking for a best of toddler faves, this is the best I can find. Even though the singing leaves a lot to be desired (sounds like an old granny singing the lyrics, albeit a vibrant one). Most of time, true to the original compositions and some well-known rhymes included. We are pleased.
Lovely songs.......2007-05-22
My grandchildren love these songs and I can't help but sing along. They are great for long road trips.
Wonderful product.......2007-05-20
My baby loves this music CD. It was very nicely made and produced.

Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines, but the bravest departure here is the way Morissette's unique vocals stand naked in the mix--a technique that drives home the painful honesty of tracks like "Right Through You," "Forgiven," and "All I Really Want." Sheryl Crow or an earthier Tori Amos are fair analogies, but Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make listeners care, think, and question. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully poetic album that harnesses a spiritual energy .......2007-07-08
Alanis doesn't hold anything back with this immaculate emotional outpouring. As her engaging voice pulls you in, you almost get the feeling you're rummaging through her personal diary. She exposes herself with such a sense of raw vulnerability and unbridled emotion. Her insightful lyrics really show an enormous amount of character. Alanis is a beautiful person inside and out.
Okay, I've established my infatuation with this rock goddess, now back to her CD. It opens up with the catchy All I Really Want. As the rhythmic guitar and drums guide each verse, she asks questions and expresses herself with some random statements that all seem to come together.
Track two was her first release, You Oughtta Know. This is a powerful song in which the listener can vividly feel the anguish in her words. The lyrics are laced with not only pain, but also rage, sarcasm, and jealousy. It makes you wonder how far she went for revenge, the stupid ex-boyfriend undoubtedly was looking behind his back for months afterward.
Then there is a mellow tune called Perfect. She sings about some parents that have unreasonable expectations for their child.
A somber, bluesy sound comes next in Hand in my Pocket. Miss Morissette skillfully adds to this melodic piece with her harmonica. With her words she expresses a very humble, down-to-earth persona that I really admire.
Then comes a great song about female empowerment called Right Through You. She boldly states that she sees through the games and won't be disrespected.
The remainder of Jagged Little Pill is all super, with the songs Head Over Feet and Ironic highlighting this second half.
Overall, this is a landmark album that features basic and inseperable elements of love and pain, fear and strength, and truth and happiness. It's worth owning if you're a fan of music, poetry, or even the power of the human spirit.
A Complete Effort From Start to Finish.......2007-06-30
When i first heard Alanis Morissette, it was in 1995 when "You Oughta Know" played on the radio. My first reaction to Morissette and "You Oughta Know" was not positive - it was "what is this, why is this woman so angry, and what is this chip on her shoulder?" Most of the "bubble gum" and synth-pop of the 1980s was beginning to fade, yet Morissette's anger just seemed too raw for me to absorb at the time. However as the subsequent singles ("Ironic", "Head Over Feet", "Hand in my Pocket") from Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" album were released, I soon began to see more than an angry young woman. This got me curious enough - especially when the Grammy for Album of the Year was awarded to Morissette for "Jagged Little Pill". Once I acquired this album, I was blown away. There was so much more to this album than just an angry woman. After listening to the album many times, I even came around to discovering an appreciation to "You Oughta Know". No doubt that this album backed up a lot of the praise and sales that it racked up.
Many may be turned off by Morissette's raspy and screeching voice. However, Morissette demonstrates she has great vocal range - especially on "Jagged Little Pill". Barry Gibb built his falsetto into his own personal trademark and an integral part of his vocals. In a way, Morissette has established a trademark with her raspy and screechy voice. But as you listen to the voice, it is folded into her music at the appropriate times - making it very effective. Morissette's contributions focus around vocals, but she also contributes some harmonica.
A lot of credit for this album should go to Morissette's producer and collaborator, Glen Ballard. Ballard, does a great job at co-writing the music for the songs - providing a good mix of electric and acoustic guitars (which Ballard plays along with keyboards on several tracks). It is also clear that Ballard does a very effective job as a producer and gets the most out of Morissette on each of these tracks.
It is best looking at this track by track.
"All I Really Want": This song gives us an introduction to Morissette, the trademark screeching, her terrific vocal ranges, and some terrific electric guitar. We hear the anger in the lyrics - "I like to reel it in and then spit it out; I'm frustrated by your apathy", yet the lyrics "And all I really want is some patience; A way to calm the angry voice" indicate Morissette may want to calm it down a bit.
"You Oughta Know": Now I look at this song with sheer genius. The song deals with Morissette's angry reaction of being jilted by her lover. While the song starts with Morissette taking the high road, it launches into a scathing attack on her former lover. Terrific guitar and bass work by Dave Navarro and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers respectively really add to the effect, but ultimately it will be Morissette's outstanding vocal range that will bring this song to life.
"Perfect": This is another song where Morissette's vocal range really helps bring the song to life. The acoustic guitar start translated into the harder electric guitar is brilliant. Morissette plays the role of a strong mother putting pressure on her child for perfection.
"Hand in My Pocket": Morissette doesn't demonstrate the anger that is seen on the previous tracks. We hear some of her harmonica on a song in which Morissette confesses some of the hypocrisies that are going on in here life. (i.e. "I feel drunk but I'm sober")
"Right Through You": Great track and hear is where Morissette's trademark raspy voice comes along at the right times on the song. There is also some terrific electric guitar on this song that deals with a woman "seeing right through" a man.
"Forgiven": This may be the one controversial track on the album as we hear Alanis questioning her Catholic upbringing on this song. More outstanding trademark vocals by Morissette.
"You Learn": This is the most pop-friendly track as it deals with learning painful lessons in life.
"Head Over Feet": This is probably the "softest" track on the collection. It deals with being smitten in love - a nice contrast to a lot of the anger Morissette shows on the other tracks.
"Mary Jane": This is a narrative that Morissette tells about someone called "Mary Jane". Morissette's vocal range might be the strongest on this track. This proves Morissette's voice doesn't need to be raspy or screeching to work.
"Ironic": Also a pop-friendly song. Morissette sings about the ironies in life. Here we hear Morissette's trademark voice can work in the pop setting.
"Not the Doctor": Might be the strongest track on the collection. The song deals with Alanis' frustrations at being the strong woman in a relationship and not wanting her man to depend on her. Again more trademark vocals and the right mix of acoustic and electric guitars.
"Wake Up": This is probably the second strongest track on the collection. The song has the best overall instrumentation on the album. It is the perfect "wrap up" to the collection as it as "finale"-like qualities. Same message as on most of the other tracks - terrific trademark Morissette vocals.
There is also an alternate version of "You Oughta Know" that has a heavier bass influence, but still sounds very similar to the original. About a minute following that track is a terrific a cappella by Morissette called "Your House". Morissette does very well carrying out an a cappella.
The liner notes include all of the lyrics (except for the bonus "Your House"). This album truly has cemented its place in music history and has probably put Morissette on the road to the Hall of Fame. There is not one weak track on this collection. This is one outstanding musical work - very highly recommended.

I did not have any problems with my order. It was delivered within reasonable time and in excellent condition! This has always been my favorite album. Thanks!
One of my best loved albums ever.......2007-02-23
i bought this cd when i was still in highschool. listened to it religously. learned all the words to every single song on the entire album and all that.
but really for a girl growing up, she was inspiring and i love her true to heart lyrics.
its not pop like the spice girls who were also out around that time.
a decade later i find myself listening to it again with all of the same feelings and love for her music and for specifically this album and the way its brilliantly put together.
A Timeless Journey of the Soul.......2006-12-31
Ten years ago, as 1996 was coming to a close, Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill had become the best-selling album of the year, spending 10 of the 12 months of 1996 in Billboard's Top 5 with 10 weeks spent at #1(not to mention first going to #1 in October of 1995 as the album started it's massive selling streak in July of that year)and having created what became the quintessential soundtrack to life. I think the primary reason Jagged Little Pill drew such a large appeal was because every human emotion was explored on the album. Sure, Morissette shows her anger in the now-classic anthem, "You Oughta Know," in which she belts a penetrating attack on the man who dumped her for another woman. But the album's second single, "Hand in my Pocket," showed a softer Alanis in tune with a cosmic vibe as she sang, "What it all comes down to my friends, is that everything is just fine, fine, fine." Morissette's openness to be herself became us ten and eleven years ago, and still applies even to this day. Listeners understood both the fears and inspirations and the need to seek peace and comfort in the opening track, "All I Really Want," the acceptance of difficulties in life from "You Learn," the bitterness in "Right Through You," the questioning of religion in "Forgiven," the strive to be impressive in "Perfect," the bliss of falling in love with "Head Over Feet," the logic of consequential outcomes in "Ironic," the freedom from not being the enabler in "Not the Doctor," and so on and so forth. Morissette and producer Glen Ballard gave the world a timeless gem as they made music history. Looking ahead to five years from now, and then ten, fifteen, twenty, Jagged Little Pill will always make first timers feel cathartic again, while inspiring new generations to rebel as they wallow in self-analysis.

Elizabeth Mitchell is a smidge less locked into the no-frills folkie formula on You Are My Sunshine than on her debut, You Are My Flower. In fact, if you subtract the A-list collaborators (and, OK, the dulcimers, mandolins, and human beat boxes), Mitchell starts to look a lot like the female Dan Zanes. The same rootsy sensibility rules both artists' recordings, as does a reverence for tried-and-true folk tunes ("Good Night Irene," "Skip to My Lou") and clean production. More significantly, slivers of Zane-like adventurousness shine through here: "Alphabet Dub" set the ABCs to a reggae beat; "Hey Bo Diddley" tips its hat to the rock & roll pioneer; and the kids are called in to spice up "Crawdad." Counting kids' artists who are genuinely cool still requires fewer than 10 fingers, but with Flower and Sunshine, Mitchell proves she's among the elite. --Tammy La Gorce

Charming, Catchy, Timeless Tunes you WANT to have in your head all day!.......2007-07-13
I love this album, and her other two also. I listen to her music in the car sometimes when I don't even have a child around! Elizabeth Mitchell's voice is amazing. The guitar music accompaniment is great. There are multiple songs on her discs that have become a permanent part of our bedtime song ritual. My son especially loves "Ladybug Picnic", and I like her version of "3 is the Magic Number". For all parents annoyed by obnoxious kids music, this album is a wonderful oasis.
lovely listening.......2007-04-13
I bought this when I was looking for something that my 2.5 year-old daughter and I could both enjoy. It's been a big hit for our daily commute.
happy, gentle music.......2007-01-10
I find Elizabeth Mitchell's voice very soothing and pretty, and my kids like it too. Great for car rides.
Love it!.......2006-12-31
I started singing You Are My Sunshine to my son when he was born(07-29-06) so I thought I should get a cd with the song on it and this version is the best. I keep it in the car mainly and when he starts getting a little fussy I pop in the cd song number 9 and he quiets right down and falls asleep. Its a godsend.
You Are My Sunshine.......2006-12-22
I heard this song on the series finale of Queer As Folk and I thought it was fantastic. On the cd I purchased this version is unnumbered and the last track. Elizabeth is a fantastic folk artist and as President and CEO for the reactivated Cashbox Magazine I am looking for her to move forward in her career.

UGH! I can't stand it!!.......2007-05-17
I was looking for a cd of children's songs to play for my son. He likes to sing along to familiar favorites. This one is so annoying, I put it in the garage sale pile right away. The voices are irritating, the music is irritating, and it is mixed so kid's can't sing along if they are familiar with the original versions.
I was just looking for a plain, cd with the original classic versions of the children's songs--no "cutesy" mixes or "updates". It is proving hard to find.
My toddler loves it!.......2007-05-05
This 4-disc set contains tons of wonderful sing-a-long favorites that entertain my 2-year old. I even loaned it to her daycare class to enjoy, and all the other kids loved it too. These are all great versions and not bad for mommy to listen to either. What a value to get 101 songs for such a low price.
Just awful.......2007-04-28
I did not in my wildest imagination expect anything like this. The songs are performed by 3 or 4 year olds with poor diction and pronunciation who do not appear to even pretend to like what they are singing. I listened to several songs at random trying to figure out what on earth they are saying. To no avail. It is impossible to sing along. Songs performed by adults are not any better. I don't know where the recording studio found these people but they do not seem to be professional performers. The music is somewhat unorthodox in terms of being revamped or remixed to what came out to be a totally boring arrangement with no rhyme or beat to it.
This was a complete waste of money. Those who rate this product as good or excellent may not have heard anything better in their lifetimes. How sad.
good songs.......2007-04-16
i bought this CD for my son. Some of songs are sung at his preschool.
He sings them listening to this CD.
Not upbeat or child-like enough.......2007-03-31
Songs do not emit a jump up and go response from my children. The arrangements are really boring.

Amazon.com essential recording
Before Broadway was Disneyfied and Times Square became a mall, the best Broadway musicals were being written for Disney animated features by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman. Their songs for The Little Mermaid created the mold from which their even more popular work (Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin) would be cast. Almost every tune in Mermaid has its (slightly inferior) counterpart in Beauty, for example. But there's no topping the Oscar-winning calypso show-stopper, "Under the Sea"--in which a Caribbean crab convinces you that "Darlin' it's better/Down where it's wetter." Other songs, just as delightful, are even more impressive in the context of the movie. The rapturous "Kiss the Girl" accompanies a scene in which, despite the whispered urgings of creatures all around, the romantic hero does not act on the title's advice! That's the kind of abstract dramatic (OK, comedic) conceit you'd expect from Harold Pinter rather than Disney. And the gruesomely hilarious "Les Poissons" gives us a fisheye view of a kitchen where the seafood chef is a sort of French Ed Gein--a sadistic murderer who brutally tortures and chops up his victims, then eats them! Who says Disney never did black comedy? "...I stuff you with bread/It won't hurt, 'cause you're dead/And you're certainly lucky you are...." Lyricist Ashman may not have been Cole Porter, but he was the next best thing. --Jim Emerson

Loved it then. Loved it now........2007-04-10
Little Mermaid was the first video I ever owned myself. Loved it from the first day I saw it. I don't hold the same view as I did as a child but it's still a wonderful story. And the music is just plain fun. The best part of this special edition is Ashley Tisdale's rendition of Kiss The Girl. Let me start by saying I have issues about Disney's need to turn every actor into a singer and every singer into an actor and the promote them to the ends of the earth. And it's not so much Ashley Tisdale - though she's very talented - that makes me love this version of the song. Whoever revised the arrangement is who I'd like to really thank. I love every thing about how this version was put together. Upbeat. Fun. Totally "sqeeable". But then I'm a hopeless romantic.
Under da Sea.......2007-03-05
We actually own the CD that was originally released when the movie was first released. It is one of our favorites. I'm not sure what several others are talking about when they say this one has the origninal score. The CD's have the same exact music, with the exception of the 2nd CD. As for the songs on the 2nd CD, we have heard several on Radio Disney. They are okay once you get passed the whole remake issue. I actually enjoy the Jonas Brothers version of Poor Unfortunate Souls.

by 1989, disney animation was pretty much dead, the department itself was pretty close to getting axed. basically all hopes were riding on the little mermaid. cinematically it is of course a gem and it managed to bring about the renowned disney rennisaince that lasted untill around the mid to late 1990's. musically, this soundtrack jumpstarted the dead musical genre as well. alan menken and howard ashman teamed up for the first time on a disney picture wiht amazing results.
alan menken's first of four academy award winning scores is a musical gem. the intense flourishes on the main titles and in the happy ending finale are truly beautiful but the fun lighter tone that the majority of the score takes on is great to hear. the score really lightens up the piece and gives it an airiness (ironically enough) and allows the whole piece to really take on a fun fresh sound that is crucial for the film to work
SCORE 5 out of 5
as far as the songs go, this may just be the most consistanly good soundtrack all the songs are fun and fresh but advance the story well. no other album really contains as many sure fire hits as this one. menken and ashman made great songs here that utilize the necessary carribean influences that are truly wonderful.
FATHOMS BELOW - this is a fun opener that provides a great sense of nautical mythology and fun. it sets the film up well for the following songs that are obveously meant to juxtapose it. originally, the song was longer, but jeffery katzanberg required that ashman shorten the lyrics, the original extended version can be found on the special edition 2006 dvd.

DAUGHTERS OF TRITON - this short little snipet introduces all of ariel's sisters. its pretty bland and dry and thankfully its quick. if it were longer it would definately bring the entire soundtrack down, but luckilly its short and over with quickly

PART OF YOUR WORLD - this is ariel's only real song and it is truly beautiful. her song of longing is emotional and jodi benson's vocals take to a whole other level. many have covered this song, but none have topped benson's heartfealt version that combines longing and real sorrow. A+
5 out of 5
PART OF YOUR WORLD (REPRISE) - here is that trademark mermaid-on-rock scene from the movie and the fact that benson gets to belt out the ending bars makes this a real treat even though its so short, but this definately ranks right up there with the full version, and possibly tops it.

UNDER THE SEA - this fun song was the oscar winner for best original song and it combines great carribean rhythms and sounds wiht fun fresh and witty lyrics to epitomize the fun and freshness that the little mermaid brought to the screen. the infecteous song is one that jsut stays in your head and wont leave too, but its all ok since this is such a great song.
5 out of 5
POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS - this is ursula's big number and pat caroll is amazing at it. this song is wickidly entertaining and great. the darkly comic tone and cabaret feel make this a great vilian song and a great song in general. the incredable rollar coaster of intensities make this an impressive number that never loses the audience's interest impressively enough.
5 out of 5
LES POISSONS - this song has gotten a lot of credit for its comedic strengths, but really this is the weakest song on the whole soundtrack. it's just too comical and goes too far over the top. it fits well in the film, but feels mildly disjointed on the soundtrack itself.
4 out of 5
KISS THE GIRL - this is the second oscar nominated song and it is possibly the best of all. the combination of soft vocals provided by samuel e wright and the great soft tropical rhythms make this song an unexpected winner. on paper, these combinations are strange for a defining love song, but it all comes together with great ease.

SONGS OVERALL 5 out of 5
this entire piece brings an impressive combination of airiness and emotion to make a musical soundtrack that is truly spectacular. menken and ashman showed for the first time their true greatness when working together. this piece isn't their greatest, but it was a great starting point that revitilized what a movie musical and disney film could truly be. this timeless classic is a wonder to hear and never gets old or tired.
JUST like the movie!.......2006-10-25
Listening to this in it's entirety is almost as great as watching the movie. My daughter gets happy when she hears the first couple of notes and runs to the TV thinking the movie is on. I was really planning on buying the original CD that was released in 1988 because there were not many reviews for this new release but I'm so glad I changed my mind. This CD sounds great and is truely a score of the movie. Every song is there. If you end up not liking the second CD, doesn't matter because the 1st cd is worth your money already, I didn't mind the 2nd cd but that's not why I purchased the set anyway. made no difference to me, we just keep the first one on repeat and love every minute of it.
