4 out of 5 stars Good solid performance.......2007-04-11

If you've heard the Derek Trucks Band then you'll want this. It is a good solid performance, maybe not as controlled as the DVD Songlines Live, and a lot looser. This sounds like they're testing out some of the material that ended up on Songlines and it is interesting to see where it is here.

Stop reading the reviews and just buy it - you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Keep track of this young man.......2005-12-17

Derek Trucks is a remarkable, emerging improviser. He, with the support of a solid, capable band, is interpreting songs in a soulful, heart-felt way, delivering music with a distinctive sound and feel.

Watch him play, and you'll see a young man peacefully focused on reaching into the music. He doesn't waste an ounce of energy on posturing, wincing, or going through the choreographed paces too often seen in many of his contemporaries.

Reminiscent of the great East West era Paul Butterfield Band, featuring Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, this group, driven by Truck's passionate guitar, has updated the 60's to full-blown turn of the century fusion.

Get it, but don't get ripped off by people pretending it's a hard to find import. Go to the source - hittinthenote dot com - and pay the players.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-12-06

I Went to this show, and I recorded it with a little hand held tape recorder. Of course, it sounded terrible, but at least I could hear it again. Now I got it on cd, and it sounds great! I've seen Derek Trucks 6 times over the past 10 years, and this is the best I've ever heard them play. This cd is a must have!
Watchout for the import, it only has one disk, and half of the show!
Also if you are having trouble finding it, try the Derek Trucks web site, you can get it there!

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL for fans.......2005-12-05

For fans of Trucks and The Allman Brothers this live recording needs no more recommendation, it is a great show and recording; familiar songs but done with enough variation to keep it interesting.

For the casual listener there is alot to recommend here as well. A killer tight (but loose) band playing their eclectic mix of southern rock-funk-jazz-blues with passion and playful virtuosity. There is no mistaking this band's sound, the funky groove and sinuous slide. This may not be a recording for all moods (Truck's tends to sound like he's working a large power tool when he gets warmed up), but it is great for what it is. (Look online at the Hittinthenote website to order more cheaply and easily)

5 out of 5 stars Why this isn't more available is beyond me..........2005-11-04

This double-set CD is, in a word, fantastic. I am amazed and incredulous that it is only available either as an import or through the occasional vendor for over 25 bucks. This one should be on everyone's holiday want list! If you are familiar with Derek Trucks, this live set extends the jam and expands the fusion. Blistering guitar by young Derek hisself, plus the funk/jazz flute by Hofi Burbridge, new vocals by Mike Mattison, and the groove laid down by Yonrico Scott & Count M'Butu (and Todd Smallie on bass). A bit of Allmans old and new, jammin' like Gov't Mule, and throw some hot jazz in there (at times I heard shades of 70's Herbie Mann...ooo!), plus de funk (kind of a touch of Santana, too). It's just perfect. Not sure if you're in the mood for jazz or funk or blues or rock? No problem! Stick this in your player and get down-- or get up. You can do both, or either. Someone, somehow should make this more accessible and affordable. This ain't no commercial pop-crap; this is quality music. Derek Trucks is a genius. This is my choice for the best of the year. Find it, buy it, have fun, enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Toad on the Road.......2007-02-04

Toad The Wet Sprocket were riding at their peak when this concert took place. "Fear" became their biggest seller and the top forty welcomed "All I Want" and "Walk On The Ocean." This being a homecoming concert, both the band and their Santa Barbara fans were stoked, and the show comes off as a hero's welcome.

The band has always been underrated, and the compositions here (from the first three albums) show a lot of strength. Glen Phillips' gifts as a song-writer have never been truly recognized. While he (and the band, who co-wrote the majority of the material) did cultivate a folkish and, even at a certain level, mellow sound, there is a dark streak to many of their best songs. "One Little Girl" and "Hold Her Down" are unflinching takes on abuse, while "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted" may be the most beautiful song to never hit the top-40. They were also not shy from experimenting, as "Butterflies" shows. (Love the Beatles quote at the end!)

All in all, "Welcome Home: Live" shows Toad The Wet Sprocket in full gale as a band. A band that toughed it out through years on the road and a couple of poorly selling albums to develop the chemistry and the tenacity that they were still there when the lucky break occurred. Along with the "P.S." best of collection, this CD is a terrific representation of the band at their toadiest. Incidentally, Phillip's post-toad solo work is quite good. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars It's live Toad, what else do you need to know?.......2005-12-06

Oh man, what a gem for fans. This live disc from 1992 is nearly flawless. It does only draw from the first three albums, but that's exactly why I love it. It has numerous songs from both their debut and my favorite album "Pale", and roughly half the disc is from "Fear", which is their hit-heavy and most popular album. Plus this is 19 tracks and 74 minutes long. The songs stick to the originals for the most part, but being live gives them a nice fresh sound. Glen speaks at a few points, but keeps to jamming for the most part. I really have no complaints with the tracklist, but in a perfect world this would also include "Covered In Roses" and "High On A Riverbed". Still, it's an excellent live record, and a must for Toad-heads.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Toad album for their long-time fans........2005-04-08

I don't know how else to put it. This album is amazing. It captures Toad at their best, when it comes to live performances. It's a shame these guys didn't get more recognition.. they much more than deserved it.

Anyway, as I said, this is the boys at their best. Everything is spot on. Every song sounds just as good as their studio counterparts, and some are even better. The emotion and musicianship put into each song are unparalleled by almost any of today's top bands.

If you are a bigger fan of Toad's later works (Dulcinea and Coil sessions), you may not enjoy this as much, since this was a performance from 92. Naturally, it encompasses their first 3 albums. You might want give the samples a good listen or 2 before you decide on making this purchase.

But if you are a long time fan, and/or if you enjoy their early albums, you MUST BUY THIS NOW!! It is that good. I bought it about a month ago, and it is has never left my cd changer since...

This is the Toad album I have been waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Great live show from one of rocks's most overlooked bands.......2005-03-31

Finally, a live CD from Toad the Wet Sprocket. It's about time! And it surely doesn't disappoint. This band never got half the credit or recognition they deserved. But this CD is one treat for those of us who were fortunate enough to follow them throughout the years. My only complaint is that "Good Intentions" is not here. But that's all right. The outstanding quality of the album as a whole speaks for itself, and is reason enough to get this. If you're new to Toad the Wet Sprocket, I would recommend getting their studio albums first and then picking up this one. And for the long-time fan, get this NOW. Toad may be no more, but they sure left behind some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Gem-A MUST buy!!!.......2005-01-29

This album offers something for everyone, whether it be the seasoned fan or a newcomer to Toad's music. The versions of All I Want, Fall Down, and I Won't Take These Things for Granted are stellar, and some of the songs, like Know Me, are augmented with some new lyrics and intros. It's a perfect representation of what this band was capable of, and makes me wish they were still together. There are some neat little anecdotes from Glen (Is It for Me?, Brother), and the crowd is supportive, but not overbearing. This has to be one of the finest live recordings I've encountered recently. Even if you just remember Toad the Wet Sprocket from the early 90s, pick up this CD. You won't regret it. I can only hope there will be others.

Their Odessey and Oracle is considered a pop classic, but unfortunately the Zombies had disbanded by the record's 1968 release. Four decades later, eternal versions of that album's "This Will Be Our Year," "A Rose for Emily," "Beechwood Park," "Care of Cell 44," and "Time of the Season" make this 25-song live reunion of founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent worth the effort. Though no other Zombie was aboard for the 2004 project (including underrated guitarist/vocalist Chris White), Argent's burning keyboards, Blunstone's inimitable voice, and skilled backing musicians assure that the entire band receives its due, particularly on the Odessey selections and nuggets from the singles collection, including Argent's "Tell Her No" and "Indication," Blunstone's "Just Out of Reach," and White's "I Love You." The harmonic backing vocals that littered the Zombies catalog are astoundingly intact, with only the occasional ramble into Argent's eponymous post-Zombies band (remember "Hold Your Head Up"?) left to clutter the sequencing. (A 16-song DVD of performances from the Bloomsbury Theatre show is also available, including multiple camera angles, immaculate sound, and four of the CD's five Odessey and Oracle numbers.) --Scott Holter

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Return of the Zombies.......2007-06-28

I have always been a fan of Argent. And to see them live on DVD after all these years, was a rare treat. I've watched the concert DVD a couple of times, yet, I can honestly say the price was worth it just to see Rod Argent play his craft. I'm just a sucker for Hammond B3 players. While the Leslie speakers aren't twirling on the sides, watching Rod play is pure "Pleasure". Colin is singing with passion, the drums and base play to the talent around them, the strings were a nice addition. The bands song selection included all thier major hits, especially God Gave Rock and Roll to You, and Hold Your Head Up.

Thanks for the reuniting of this great group! It's really a trip to be able to finally see one of my early hero's live, since I never had the chance to see Argent live in concert.

By the way, if you really like Rod Argent, look for "Red House". It's quite a departure of his "fury on the organ", more laid back and introspective, yet shows his talent as a composure.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent glimpse of one of the greatest bands of the 60s........2007-06-09

While Colin Blunstone hay have aged, his voice sounds almost as good as it did 40 years ago. Versions of "Care of Cell 44", "Time Of the Season", "Tell Her No" , and an uptempo cover of "What Becomes Of the Brokenhearted" incorporate the breathy vocals of Blunstone with the one of a kind keyboard playing of Rod Argent. This is a must own for true Zombies fans as it provides a very rare live performance from a band that broke up before their huge success with the album "Odessey and Oracle"

3 out of 5 stars Nice to Hear Them Again, but Where Is Chris White?.......2007-05-25

In the broadest sense, I think it's fair to say that the Zombies got a raw deal. They were one of the most talented and intelligent bands during the latter part of the British invasion, and yet they were thrown on the scrap heap of history. Two ridiculously catchy hit singles swept through America during our '64-'65 obsession with the London scene; "Tell Her No" and "She's Not There" combine raw rock and roll with a jazz sensibility that still sounds fresh today. Subsequently, their record company rewarded the band by refusing to issue their brilliant psychedelic album masterpiece entitled "Odessey and Oracle." Thankfully, Al Kooper (of Blood, Sweat & Tears, the Dylan sessions, et. al.) saw the folly of this decision and begged Columbia to right the situation. Eventually, the album saw daylight, but sold poorly, despite the extracted single that became a best seller. "Time of the Season" sounded ahead of its time in 1968, despite the fact that it was recorded nearly two years before its release. Eventually, the band collapsed under the weight of so much indifference, and the most we've heard since then is the occasional project by keyboardist Rod Argent.
"Live at Bloomsbury Theatre" celebrates the reunion of Rod Argent with vocalist Colin Blunstone. Technically, they alone cannot represent a reforming of the Zombies, since songwriter/vocalist Chris White has always been an integral part of the band. His absence is felt, but after so much time, it's nice to hear these tunes, even without White's crucial input. The CD is a generous 2-disk set containing 25 songs, while the DVD pairs the song selection down to a less unwieldy 15 tracks. The editing is a good thing, allowing the video to hold the viewer's interest significantly better than the CD collection. All of the major hits are here, including Argent's best-known solo work, such as "Hold Your Head Up" and "God Gave Rock and Roll to You." The performances are admirably executed, often utilizing a string section to augment that standard rock and roll configuration of the actual band. Argent sounds great and Blunstone is in fine voice throughout. In summation, "Live at the Bloomsbury" is a fine but faulted collection, never quite transcending its aura of nostalgia, while glossing over the absence of Chris White. B Tom Ryan

"Brian is Back!" It's taken decades, but that once sadly ironic press agent's epithet has finally come true. The intervening quarter-century may have devastated Brian Wilson's mind and body, and band and family, but, as this double-disc live recording/love-fest ably demonstrates, his soul and music burn on. Backed flawlessly by a 10-piece band (including L.A. pop revivalists the Wondermints) of fervent loyalists, Wilson and company march joyously through the Beach Boys' hits-laden catalog, from "Surfer Girl" through "Good Vibrations" to the cream of Pet Sounds, a handful of the legend's solo works, and a gratifying surprise or two (including a delicious, inside-out-ironic cover of Barenaked Ladies' laid-back "Brian Wilson" that segues hauntingly into the all-too-autobiographical "'Til I Die"). If cynics have chosen to deride Wilson's mature voice (as steady and expressive as it's been in decades) and general oddness (here revealed for what it often truly is: a playfully off-center sense of humor), they do so at the peril of ignoring his vast contributions and continuing influence--and the spark of undimmed genius that still holds so much promise. Make no mistake, this show was not about nostalgia, but rather a celebration of music whose performances sound completely in the moment. Previously available only as a Wilson Web site exclusive, this expanded edition includes an audio interview with Brian at the piano, as well as two bonus tracks--"Sloop John B" and the rousing encore sing-along "Barbara Ann"--that help further underscore a hopeful notion: Brian is really back. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCEPTIONAL LIVE PERFORMANCE.....................2007-01-23

This cd set rocks, Brian with his Wondermints are exceptional. The Wondermints are a L.a. group of super musicians who have an interest and love for Brian Wilson and The Beach Boy sound. The Wondermints performance shows their love for Brians musical sound. Brians performance is incredible and his voice although older, sounds really nice. Brians head and performance are really into this Roxy show, I believe this due, to the smaller area this concert was performed in, not like a giant stadium or arena, were concert sound seems to get washed out. Listening to this two cd set, I was really surprised how good this concert sounded. The interview with Brian, the last track of cd two, was really nice. All the Pet Sounds instrumentals were performed as close to the Pet Sounds album as the Wondermints could possibly perform. The perfomances of the early Beach Boys music was a treat to listen to. Brian really wanted to relive his lost youth with this concert and of course pay tribute to his deceased brother Carl with the song dedication "Lay Down Burden". All and all this "Live At The Roxy" is a well worth listen, especially the import edition it has four extra songs including Brians interview. BRIAN YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Live Album.......2005-12-02

Even though Brian Wilson's voice has changed a bit since the heydey of the Beach Boys in the sixties, he still delivers some nice versions of the old songs, and has an easy going manner with the audience.
I love the song "Love and Mercy", and I'm glad he included it in this concert!

4 out of 5 stars For any one who loves Beach boys Music.......2005-08-03

This is a great CD, Brian Wilson is at his best! A great concert! The people that back Brian sound as good if not
better then the Beach Boys!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant live set from a living genius........2005-03-16

Much to the surprise of everyone, Brian Wilson began touring in the late '90s, and his shows became everything the Beach Boys were not-- a celebration not of surf and cars and fun in the summer, but of genius, digging below the hits and unearthing many gems. Backed by a supportive and brilliant band, the music on these two CDs, taken from two nights at the Roxy in Los Angeles, is brilliant.

The credit largely goes to Brian's band, the core of which is the L.A. pop band the Wondermints-- a superb group of musicians, and former Beach Boys touring bandmember Jeffrey Foskett, who largely sings Brian's falsettos. Brian's vocal range has contracted a bit over the years, and the vocal arrangements are structured for him to sing all the leads. While his voice is weak and occasionally goes off key or misses notes, its still got enough of that magic to carry itself.

The set is amazing-- from the opener, bizarre 1965 single "The Little Girl I Once Knew", the energy level is high, the performance is filled with obscure gems such "This Whole World", "Kiss Me Baby", "Please Let Me Wonder" and "'Til I Die" (the latter is a powerful and moving rendition), hits ("California Girls", "I Get Around", "God Only Knows", "Good Vibrations"), a couple "Pet Sounds" instrumentals, and a pair of new songs.

Now mind you, Brian's sort of odd mannerisms, accentuated moreso during these early shows, are there, but they're easy enough to ignore, and really, the performance is top notch. This is very highly recommended for any Beach Boys fan.

4 out of 5 stars An introduction to Brian Wilson.......2004-10-22

I am not a traditional Beach Boys fan at all. I won tickets to see Paul Simon in concert. Although I am a Paul Simon fan, my wife and I were surprised when we heard that Brian Wilson was the "back up" band. I thought to myself, we should check the Brian Wilson set out. He should have been the "headliner"...as much as I like Paul Simon, the concert highlight was Brian Wilson and his band. I immediately became a fan and bought this cd release. The cd has a nice mix of songs and the band and Brian Wilson put on a good show. He even makes a little fun of his own personal past "lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did"...

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest men no one knows about.......2007-01-12

When I was little my parents would play this Record, not CD or Tape an actual record and I would laugh by head off. When I saw it was available on CD I didn't hesitate to buy it. Emo's timing and story telling quality truly make him a comdedic genius. Even if you have never heard of him get this album and laugh like crazy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-11-29

This is the single funniest stand up I have ever heard in my life.

I mean, tears were rolling down my face the first time I heard "Downtown Downer's Grove," it's just brilliant.

Its original, unique, super funny and the material hasn't aged a bit. I missed him in his prime (I'm currently 19 and bought this disc about a year ago), but I know he still performs, so hopefully I'll be able to catch him live sometime.

I should also mention that its pretty clean material too, nothing over PG on the whole thing, which is great, as I prefer my comedy clean.

Emo Philip's stuff is golden, its the kind of jokes that are made better by his performance, but would still be laugh out loud hilarious if you were to just read a transcript of his jokes. Being able to pull that off takes talent, way too many comedians rely on outrageous performances to enhance weak material (I'm looking at you, Dane Cook), but not Emo.

I can't understand why this guy isn't more famous, this stuff is classic.

5 out of 5 stars Soiled pants........2006-08-09

I saw Emo at the top of his popularity in the late eighties doing the material on this album. It is probably one of the best routines ever created by man or Emo. The jokes and the goofy nerdy persona were in perfect alignment. If only I had been the type to wet my pants when laughing too hard.

5 out of 5 stars Emo Emo Emo!.......2004-12-18

Even if you haven't heard of Emo Philips, please do yourself and Emo a favor and purchase this album. It contains two amazing performances and some of his greatest material to date. His style of comedy is not dated like some of the "comic greats" such as George Carlin (why he's up there and he isn't is one of nature's great mysteries), nor is it inappropriate or immature. One of the greatest comedy albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Emo is one of the best.......2003-06-21

I saw Emo on TV when I was a teenager - 15 years ago - and I haven't been able to get his bit out of my mind since. Emo is a odd-ball comic with some of the funniest/strangest material you'll ever run into. If your ready for something different, E=Mo2 will satisfy your jonesing for a good-time, laugh-out comic.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Clegg Best of Live.......2006-01-02

Technically, this is the best recording of Johnny Clegg's music that is available. This is a live recording at the Nelson Mandella Theater and is beautifully engineered. In addition, Johnny's voice has taken on a confidently mature sound that is not heard on many of his other recordings.

Johnny Clegg's music is an amazing amalgam of different musical styles combiing Zulu singing, rock, reggae, and jazz. It is shocking that he is so little known in the USA and his music is never played on popular radio. He is an international star as witnessed by the huge crowd at a concert in Paris, which is featured on his Live DVD.

4 out of 5 stars excellent one stop shopping.......2004-09-26

This is the best single collection I've found of the songs spanning Johnny Clegg's long career. It's affordable if bought used (i.e., not at Amazon, sorry guys). For Clegg fanatics, it's worth it to add another version of these songs to your collection - all of them energetic and well-played. For newcomers, it's worth it to get an easy introduction to why you might want to become a fanatic. Having been converted, though, it's worth tracking down the original albums. None of these live versions do any sort of disservice to the original song, but very few are actually better (in my view) - "Dela," for example, loses a good deal of its original subtlety in this live setting, at least. (That said, it settles in beautifully between "Tatazela" and "December African Rain.") Also, the mix between songs is a little abrupt - like the mix tapes you made in college, the applause just cuts off, then starts again.

But buy this album - then buy the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous live CD.......2004-07-11

This CD contains performances and arrangements by the band members who comprise the Johnny Clegg Band that just finished touring in the US in Spring and Summer 2004. With two veterans of the Savuka days (Andy Innes and Mandisa Dlanga) and the new talent Johnny has recruited for this band, the musicianship is superb, the arrangements are new and lively and in a few cases even better than the originals. The liner notes explain that this is a live recording of performances made at the Nelson Theatre in Johannesburg called "A South African Story." Tens (hundreds?) of thousands of South Africans have attended these concerts over the past few years. If you saw the band in the US in Spring or Summer 2004 and want to listen to the sound you heard, this is the CD to buy. If you already know Clegg's music, this is an excellent way to get updated on a master musician's newest phase. Hopefully it will be released domestically and will be a little less expensive, but it is still worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy Live!.......2007-04-29

I enjoyed Vikki's concert in Nagoya,Japan about 30 years ago. It was the very splendid. This CD also offers Charm of superstar Vikki. Anyway, she is GREAT.

5 out of 5 stars VIKKI CARR CONCERT CLASSIC~BRAVO!!! .......2004-09-18

Vikki Carr possesses one of the finest voices in Popular Music history but sadly has not been given her just due by the music industry in her own country. Vikki Carr became the Legendary Superstar that her talent warrants with the release of her superb Spanish albums which are all sung with breathtaking vocal beauty and deeply felt passionate emotion. From the early sixties through the seventies Vikki recorded many classic LP's in English but it was her Spanish albums that gave her the acclaim she richly deserves. "It Must Be Him" was the lone token English mega-hit exception and this soulful live version from the Greek Theatre concert is a winner. Even though radio was not playing Vikki Carr records because she wasn't a singer/songwriter, (that tired 70's formula was a requirement for some goofy reason in this bleak musical era until Disco came along and then music plunged artistly to even deeper depths and we won't even mention the current sad state of the music world!) Vikki Carr concerts continued to be sold-out events that drew numerous standing ovations for her wonderful performing and great singing. This beautifully remastered 2CD set of "Live At The Greek Theatre" is a treasure chest of wonderful performances and it is great to experience this brilliant velvety soulful voice over and over again in a diverse program of great songs sung to absolute perfection! "Love Song" weaves through this gorgeous set of songs about love sung with vocal beauty and deeply passionate emotion that is unsurpassed. A soulfully sung "Spanish Medley" shows this fiery DIVA at her best and the superb "Judy Garland Medley" is brilliant and would make Judy Garland smile down with approval and anyone who appreciates the best in great singers will not want to miss this extraordinary concert! This is the Art Of Singing at its finest and Vikki Carr is still performing in peak form in concert and not to be missed as she is one of the all time greatest...thank you VIKKI CARR!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Live Recording.......2004-07-11

Vikki Carr's interpretation of "With Pen In Hand" is different in every recording. While the one in this album is perfectly nice and sentimental, if you like this song, you should also get the CD titled "It Must Be Him/For Once in My Life" featuring another version of the song she performed live in New York.

5 out of 5 stars I know what it is!.......2004-07-09

The lyric should read "Without any thorns the rose can't be sweet" instead. The song is "The Lesson" first released in 10/1967 on a Liberty single. The 2002 CD release of "It Must Be Him / For Once in My Life" (Collectables) also features this song as a bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Particular Vicki Carr Song.......2004-07-05

I am trying to find a CD by Vicki Carr with a song she does...I don't know the exact title but the main line is "A Rose Can't Be Sweet Without Any Thorns"...it's a beautiful song and I would appreciate any information. Thanks

The complete concert of 41 songs was recorded live in Sanders Theatre at Harvard University and illuminates the skill of a master performer and the dedication of an enduring political activist. 5 out of 5 stars The Best.......1998-09-07

Pete is a gift to us, one that will be certainly lost when he is gone. I got to see Pete and Arlo in concert and it was the best concert I've been to (including rock/pop stuff). This album is consumate Pete because he gets the crowd singing like a choir. There is no finer Seeger album than this. Pete's autographed picture hangs in my office and it is a treasure as is he.
